As someone who owns an acoustic bass, it’s honestly so hard to get a good slap sound. This is honestly one of the most impressive things you done
Amplification is all the difference
Facts. It is quite tough.
Sounds like you need to have your action adjusted
@@Muckwickett Might be. Very much a beginner wrt playing bass, so any advice is welcome
Sounds to me as if we are hearing the piezoelectric pickups in this bass and that makes a huge difference in the "slappabillity" of an acoustic
I would buy a whole album of this, it has so many emotions in it. It's exciting, it's interesting, it's relaxing. Definitely vibing with this.
If you like emotional instrumentals i'd love to recommend an album, it's possible you've already seen it but if you haven't you gotta check out Masayoshi Takanaka [The Rainbow Goblins]. An absolutely breathtaking album
@@tjgrinnell7786 TY for the recommendation, very nice and chill

Most Bass Players: "Acoustic basses never sound good."
Charles: "Hold my beer."
His playing is great, but acoustic basses still don't sound good. Except for the stand up variety of course
hold my bass
@@Dwightpower88 Id get one and put piccolo strings on it, that sounds pretty cool
i like the sound of them but they don’t serve the purpose as a bass very well
I'd say Acoustic bass players and Charles are in two different languages
I've played acoustic bass before and this is awesome. To get that sound from that type of bass... impressive
There's so much editing .....it absolutely dies not sound like this..lol
@@BastardBradi sense jealousy from this comment LMAO
@bynosaurus4024 ....why not one camera angle through the whole song then? If you believe this isn't very heavily edited then you delusional.
or maybe he’s a really incredible bassist with multiple cameras
he does that in most of his vids anyway
INSANE skills dude, I'm so happy you share this will the world. It always makes my day!
I saw it in the morning, Great way to start the day
This guy really knows his shit
I can tell from this video that I need new strings on my acoustic!
me too and I am not a musician or even a big music fan any more... Charles is just *_that talented_*
That was both a cool composition and an impossibly good performance. I've never heard and acoustic bass songs so perfect. Dude, you must have drilled that for weeks. Well done!
It's Charles, he drilled it for hours max I wager :) respectfully intended
hans zimmer - time is used a good amount in this. he should have given credit for the original composer.
@@minusthemouses that is a grave accusation
@@minusthemouses well, it's a pretty straight forward chord progression... sheesh...
@@eivind105 its house of the rising sun but with a bridge
Jumping between the 'lead' part and the 'accompaniment' was insane, well done.
Beautiful
While your technical skill is astounding, I appreciate that what you play is actually musical and accessible to non-bass players like me. There are lots of technically outstanding bass players whose music sounds sterile and unrelatable.
Yes!
there's a lot of technically outstanding bass players whose music is extremely melodic and creative as well but for some reason people like you always have to be negative and diminish fantastic music.

Killer!!! Always felt the acoustic bass guitar was an under-appreciated instrument. One of the few times I've heard it used to its full capabilities! New challenge though... can you play a slap solo on UPRIGHT bass? ;)
That sounds like a great challenge!
Yes do it
Please do it!
Look up the live performance of Stanley Jordan's "Return Expedition."
It makes sense that acoustic (not upright) bass never gained popularity. The point of bass is that you feel it. Acoustic bass (from what i guess) isn't as good as the other two simply project sound better, and most roles whihc could be filled by acoustic bass are just done better by electric, again because you can really feel the bass.
This by far the best I've EVER heard an acoustic bass sound.
And bravo on even getting a excellent slap on an acoustic, cause I know myself that getting a decent slaping sound on a acoustic bass is never easy.✌️
The thing is... Charles always has amazing melodies. Not only does he have the speed and endurance to play crazy fast, accurately and utilizing every instrument to its full potential. Every original song he records is somewhat a masterpiece when it comes to melody and rhythm. I'm amazed every time👍
So much hard work must have gone into your playing. Hours and hours of practice. I'm a guitarist and it is very much a treat to watch you play. Thank you!
The slow parts really remind me of one of the main themes in Inception. Bass sounds great
Yeah, I thought it was Time from Hans Zimmer.
It’s the same chord structure, so that makes a lot of sense. I was definitely like, “That’s Time by Hans Zimmer!” One of my favorite pieces in film.
I thought it reminded me of watermelon sugar LOL
Reminded me of Spanish Sahara by Foals.
I thought it was a cover of that
What a joy it is to see the performance of an artist at the top of his game.
I've been a guitar player for 20 years, but I picked up bass because of you man.
Your playing and creativity are unreal
this guy can play BAR-CORDS ON BASS 😮
So one thing I love about this channel: titles always grab your attention and bring you in but it's never click bait. He never fails to disappoint. Amazing talent love listening to your music don't stop making it
Brilliant and fantastic man! Acoustics can definitely be a challenge, and your ability to play with ease is simply impressive!
Thanks! Yeah the tapping is probably the hardest, the sustain isn't quite as good as on electrics
@@CharlesBerthoud For sure. The way and tone you make it have given the limitations is outstanding! Cheers for such a challenging yet rewarding play!
Call off the search and send the other contestents on their way. This is the single best bass sound I've ever heard! I am in love and could listen to that fat, percussive, acoustic jam all day! Thank you, Charles. 👏💯🤙
I love how Charles never runs out of conversation with his Bass nice job!!
Jesus Christ died for your ssiinnss
Thats me 95% of time. I love what the acoustic brings that nothing else seems to. Especially pluged in! Enjoy your playing brother! Keep it coming.
I LOVE the "drumming" on the body of the bass
Adds that little extra groove
On top of the playing which is already something I can only dream of someday doing!
Good work as always Charles!
It's layered
This may be my favorite song of yours and I love a lot of them. You're really amazing, it's really hard to not just want to pick up an instrument and make music when seeing you play. I know I'll never do what you do, but damn you make me wanna try. How cool of a power is that?
Seriously! Legitimately makes me hunger to pick up my bass and just play. Very inspiring!
Telling yourself you can't is only a door to never being able to if you think an instrument would be cool to know them learn it
Finalluly decided to get a guitar cause of musicians like him
Charles, YOU could even get a good tapping or slap tone out of a brick. This is amazing.
Name your band "The BrickTones"
You are welcome.
🤣🤣
Oh, this is so sweet.
When doing your magic on electric basses, I often think the pieces gets too stuffed, somehow. Too much sound being jampacked into the chords if that makes sense. Especially with the speedy pieces it gets cluttered in my listening experience. On the acoustic bass the notes come out crisp and clear even during the speedy bits, really does your talent justice I think.
I think Charles can make every instruments sound awesome, that's how talented he is🔥
As someone who has criticized you as a showboater in the past (while mindful of your undeniably prodigious talent), this is by far my favorite thing you’ve put out in a long time. Economic playing, nothing unnecessary, just pure feel. Love this. 👏
You've definitely earned the nickname "the pro". You play every style amazingly.
"Verified" pro!
He is way more than a pro
@@noamtsvi that comes from where he first got known, being hired as a Fiverr "PRO" by Davie. It's a reference to his origin of his YT blowup
Charles never ceases to amaze. Also I love the composition on this one.
This man’s skill threshold is boundless. Jeez. 🙌👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥
He’s the beet bassist I’ve seen
Emoji much?
I've got tens of your videos in my recommendations, watched all of them. Every time impressed beyond the moon. Those fingers are gold. The sense of situation is the icing and the humour on top. You are the only bass player in the world who can actually discuss in bass with people beyond the instrumental realm.
Love the way you tease out some incredibly satisfying sounds here; thank you Charles!
Just WOW. I'm constantly amazed. Even the rythem track you backed this with is pleasing. I really think you're an amazing musician
Sounds amazing. All of these experiments lead to such unique sounds that need to be used and popularized by awesome musicians like you!
yo funny seeing you here love your content
Look what 1977 music inspired you to do.
You really captured the vibe of this theme tune.
Love the way you put your own expression into it too not copying note for note.
A1 man. A1.
So smooth! A nice shift from the more metallic/agressive sound of the previous solos. Charles is indeed the king of ghost notes and they sound awesome here. Moreover, it's funny to see a les paul acoustic bass with a Fender JB/PB headstock, lol
You're an exceptional artist. That's why it sounds so awesome. What a pleasure to listen to the rhythm and the melody as well.
This is absolutely insane. Gets me into that bass zone where your just feeling it. Please give us tabs for this, that would be insanely great I want to share this feeling with people :)
That is some absolutely amazing playing. I can barely believe my ears and he makes it look so effortless. So beautiful!!
Hans Zimmer ‘time’ Charles version and it works absolutely stunning
My thoughts exactly!
thank you. i knew i recognized that opening. I was thinking trance song, and possibly a remix
Slapception.
There's no way you can listen to this without feeling the groove and bobbing your head. 10 outta 10 my friend!
That was SICK my friend. Always looking forward to the next Berthoud riff
I could sit back and bob my head all day to this on repeat, amazing 👏
I've never heard an acoustic bass sounds so beautiful!!
Brilliant skill set. Your talent level is phenomenal.
Respect 🙌
One of the best ones you've made tbh, insanely impressive
Bro, one of my favorite things about your videos, is that the title always seems like it would be click bait, but it's not. You always deliver my man
You're not just blowing chops... you're playing music!!! 👊🏿🔥🔥
The funky parts of the licks had me very interested. Great stuff, young man. You deserve every one of those 1.1 million subscribers.
Always an absolute pleasure seeing someone master their given passion. Thank you for sharing! 🙏👍🖖✌️
Glad to watch it again after few months: It still amazing!
I really love your acoustic bass playing!
If you have time, please do more of these ;)
I've never seen anyone fret a stringed instrument so cleanly as this. Always a joy to watch and to listen to!
Would be so great to see a live performance if you're ever playing in the North of England!
Nice choice for an acoustic bass Charles. As an owner of a Fender Kingman myself, I think it’s one of the best and semi-affordable acoustic basses on the market. Also great playing as usual lol.
Baita som!!! Show!
Esse baixo. Também é uma manteiga hem!!
Muito bom!!
Stumbled into your vids & channel by accident, so glad I did... you are off the charts dude, wish I was half as good as you. Keep the vids coming you've gained a subscriber
Hey Charles, I've been watching your content since the first Fivr thing, and I love what you are doing. One question I have: Is what we're hearing a merge of multiple takes, or is it the take from that exact video?
It looks like this is the take from the video. I watched at 50% and it's too accurate to be a playback. It *_might_* be a patch up of multiple takes ('though I don't think so), but what we hear is what we see. There's a "drum loop" from the first few bars going on, probably from a loop pedal - which makes the performance even more amazing, if possible.
It's actually all deepfaked. The real guy playing the bass is actually a cat running up and down an old piano keyboard.
@@mastertantoo there's a cat playing "Chopsticks"... WITH CHOPSTICKS
@@setaside2 🤣😂 trained by a meowsic tutor?
1:32 and those few bars Just , well , I just wasnt expecting.... , out of all this Bass vid and its entirety of brilliance . All level 5000
I now need an acoustic bass
It is not just that you are a technical superhero but you are also a musically gifted composer.
The perfect example of how to make amazing music with just one instrument and less than 2 minutes in lenght
I learned how to play a decade ago listening to chilli peppers, rage, victor wooten, jaco, marcus, stanley clarke but out of all the bassists out there. You are by far more encouraging and inspirational in my opinion which makes you my all time favorite. Thanks for making stuff like this. I think I'm going to finally play my acoustic bass that has been sitting in the closet for much too long.
Slap ACOUSTIC bass sounds EVEN FUNKIER only when *YOU* play it! Honestly, I've had an ovation-style acoustic for almost 30 years that will never sound like this (given, it IS fretless). I think you could make a cigar-box bass sound awesome! (uh-oh...I see a slap cigar-box bass video coming soon!)
Any instrument can sound amazing in the right hands👌👌 beautiful, as usual .
“Nice guitar”
we're so lucky to hear you play charles! i'm amazed...
You sound great!
I remember going through a phase in music where I wanted all bass licks I designed to be tracked on an acoustic bass. Didn't matter the genre either there is something special about the character of sound you get. Distorted, clean whatever that natural boom and clack is like salt in the music food.
I'm most impressed by the hammer ons. How the hell did you get them to make a sound on an acoustic bass?
One thing noticeable on all his videos is how lightning fast he plays. Just astounding. So cool. 😎
Great job 👍🤘
Omg this groovy I can listen to this all day.👏👏👏👏
Bajoloche players be like
You’ve just won something💯⬆️✅
I've played bass for probably close to the last 20 years and I never could get slap down until I got an acoustic/electric Dean 4 string. Loved the way it sounds ever since
I’m so curious, did you loop the “drum” part in real time? Is there always a loop pedal beneath the camera we don’t see?
the way the was simultaneously ASMR and some REEEEEEAL funk absolutely made my day
the slowdown in the middle is just 😩😙🤌
Excellent!
To me electric bass always seems to have this slightly cotton-y “hearing it through a wall” kind of sound, but this sounded crisp and clean.
Пересматриваю все Ваши видео. Лучшего басс гитариста чем Вы не существует. Удачи Вам в жизни и на Вашем поприще!
Outstanding as usual... Wait, what, usual? There's nothing usual, ordinary here. Simply extraordinary
It's awesome to see you do this. I've been slapping acoustic basses since the 90's, when people were surprised to see and hear it done. Kudos to you for doing it well.
It just makes good musicianship sound even better! Great playing, great sound!
Virtuosic music doesn’t usually move me the way your music does. Rare combination of extreme technical talent, groove, and feel.
Dude! You're a legend. No where near as good as you, but I have an acoustic bass and it's def. fun to slap! Thank you for sharing this beautiful solo with us.
I love the keyboard in the chorus it makes me feel that they should have the keyboard line in the chorus be louder.
OMG! You just keep outdoing yourself!
Such a sweet jam.
The intro is just the inception theme! I love this!
Just awesome as always Charles! Thanks for sharing!
This might be my favorite arrangement you’ve ever put together
Dayum bro, those PLPTPTPTPT really gets me groovin.
I am convinced Charles is just beatboxing throughout these videos
Incredible stuff man
mad talent, don't stop, wow
There’s acoustic bass, then there’s Charles. Amazing. Again.
It just gets better and better every video.
Aweseome Charles! Truth be told, your particular tapping/slapping technique is spot on for the tone & dynamics of acoustic basses, lovely stuff indeed
Full of energy and trust... bravo
I'm not normally a fan of piezo pickups, but that snappy kind of sound really works for this style.
This style deserves an album of its own. That tone is wicked, good sir. Funky finger style with some groove.
you are an amazing bass player ... so soothing funky groove
Damn. The speed with which you went from the percussion part to that melody, just a blur. This sounds amazing.
The best bass player on UA-cam!!Job well done
That was wicked, mate - you're such a great player. 👏😁👍
just add a vocoder/autotuned-vocal/hook and a sick techno beat...that's another win for Daft Punk! (seriously love it dude!)
