Cdr. Niblack was a moderately prominent officer of the US Navy of the day. Very influential in the development of signaling and of the tactical doctrine of the Navy. Its interesting to hear of him being involved in a minor way in Italian guns.
Just a slight correction Othais: the raised panel with the Sultan's Tughra has the Hijri (Islamic Calendar) year 1314 under it, not the serial number. Because it's a lunar calendar, 1314 works out to either 1896 or 1897 in the Gregorian Calendar (1314 started in June of 1896 and ended in June of 1897). A small note on Eastern Arabic Numerals: Despite the arabic script being read right to left, numbers are always read left to right. So the date on the side is written ۱۳۱٤ which corresponds one to one with 1314 rather than 4131.
The only times I ever suffered during a Primer was in cases where I put one of these on podcast-style when going to sleep and then the shooting segment started before I was actually asleep. The Squib episodes were pure gold in that respect.
I remember reading one of Elmer Keiths Books, cant remember which one, anyway, he talked about an old mountain man who lived in the Montana mountains back in the early 1900s. Elmer said the old mountain man had one firearm, a C96 Broom-handle Mauser, he killed everything from jack rabbits to Grizz. Elmer said he would crawl with 50 yds and take head shots. He said an ugly firearm, but extremely accurate. Elmer said he didnt condone this, and would have chosen a winchester 94 as an alternative.
I always took the top assembly off first; then took the action out and then disassembled the bolt, making it easy to reassemble the bolt and then put the action on to the bottom of the bolt.
Wow, the manual-of-arms of loading/safing/drawing the C96 as a handgun is way more terrifying than I ever realized. And that takedown... Gosh those slab-sides are gorgeous though.
I'm not a leave a comment type but today I just want to say thank you. I'm fortunate to have owned some of the firearms you've examined and 100% I've learned more from you than even owning the same firearms. You and May have educated, illuminated and gave some truths about the WW 1 era that always interests me in old weapon thinking and technology. Considering the small and close range nature of torpedo boats of this era: I think a stocked C96 would be a great choice! It’s a great amount of compact firepower where that type of thing might be needed
I have to say, from the modern owner sort of perspective, I personally prefer the milled sides to the slabs. If you've already got that much complicated shaping going on, might as well go all the way.
Well, even in its early days, the Primer shows were more informative than 95 % of all the other stuff. There was a reason Ian at Forgotten Weapons sent me to you. And oh boy, how much have the show improved since this early days. Thank you for that. And finally the gun that Ohtais never heard of gets its own episode. Don`t spoil me too much.
I can imagine this system being pretty unforgiving in dirty conditions. The internal magazine would be a PIA as well. Those issues aside, it seems like a fantastic pistol for the era. A slightly modernized C96 repro would be an awesome range toy. Something with modern magazines and a modernized stock design. About *C&Rsenal* : This show has been fantastic from the very beginning. Of course it has improved in every aspect as time has passed and everybody has gained more experience. One thing of particular note, Bruno's animations have risen to stellar quality. You can really see how much he has learned through experience. The Mauser modeled for this video is excellent.
The animations are a very valuable addition to the show. It does make it mich easier for people without technical background to understand the mechanics - esp. as they are (or seem to be) so much more complicated than later locking mechanisms.

Thank you for this video. I have watched most of your videos, but this one struck a personal note with me. Back in 1980 when I was working at Lever Arms in Vancouver Canada, an 1899 Navy Commercial (no navy markings) showed up. I had to come to work every day and stare at this mint condition, matching numbered gun with a beautiful holster. I could barely afford it and I really wanted it. The problem was that the bore was completely ruined by shooting corrosive ammo. There was virtually no rifling left in that dark black hole. No amount of polishing could fix the barrel. Relining was an option, but it would have ruined the value as a collectors piece. I did not buy it and 30 years later I did buy a pre-WWI commercial 'transitional' C96 with a mint bore and nice stock which they can throw in my grave with me. I still miss the slab sided 1899 though. There was something unique about it. Can you imagine shooting corrosive ammo near salt water and what the effect would have been on barrels? I have owned Mauser both Rifles and Pistols that were commercially proofed that must have been made from left over military contract pieces as they follow the contract pattern but do not have the country banner or the military acceptance markings. I don't think Mauser ever wasted anything, especially in the early days.

Since this was for naval use, they probably never meant to carry it loaded in the holster at all. It's not like warships of that era could close to boarding range in five seconds, they almost certainly kept them empty in the holster and only loaded with a stripper clip on command when expecting to use them.

Possible. Also I suspect that rather than angrily telling them to stop developing it on company time, Paul Mauser only changed how much time was allocated to the pistol development vs. maybe more immediate projects.

Never once suffered through any video :-) As for c96.. I have love them since I was a kid, and when I turned 16 my dad as a birthday gift had a armscollector friend show up and I got to shoot the 96, and several other old firearms.. And to his shock, made me love the 96 more :-D. But.. I forgot my dads rule, "you shoot it, you clean it".. Not that enjoyable. Heck, I had cleaned Lugers, mp40s( my dads army issued weapon)mg3s etc, but thats when I learned how complicated weapons used to be.

When you were working the spring out, I couldn't stop thinking that maybe you needed to use the Guinea Pig rub method to help.

As for c96.. I have love them since I was a kid, and when I turned 16 my dad as a birthday gift had a armscollector friend show up and I got to shoot the 96, and several other old firearms.. And to his shock, made me love the 96 more :-D. But.. I forgot my dads rule, "you shoot it, you clean it".. Not that enjoyable.
Heck, I had cleaned Lugers, mp40s( my dads army issued weapon)mg3s etc, but thats when I learned how complicated weapons used to be.
