- Guitarist Yvette Young (Covet) employs her double-hand guitar tapping to construct intricate melodies and progressions, and today she dropped by the Reverb studio to share some tips on how to write math rock and instrumental music with this two-handed fretboard technique. And it all begins with open tunings.

I don't know whether to be inspired or kick my guitar into a fireplace. Damn.
A really loud bonfire that would be
At least you know you'll finally nail that long slow burning solo.
And She also play piano and violin
Of course she's asian .
lol
yvette is such an inspiring and talented musician. truly a musical genius. she is a breath of fresh air compared to most modern music. cant wait to see more
WOW!
So beautiful!
Glad to hear about another open tuning that I'm going to have to try out.
I'm a huge fan of Open C, which John Butler uses in OCEAN....
CGCGCE capoed at the 4th fret.
Open D is also very fun.
The problem is mostly just trying to keep all these mappings of the fretboard in my head and not just let my fingers go where they are used to.
This instrument is so infinitely complex and entertaining.
I wonder if there is even such a thing as true mastery with guitar.
Endless things to learn.
Yvette is a true inspiration and has gained a new listener!
Will definitely look for her band to come to town now!
thank you for existing.
Covet is playing at my city's youth music place and I'm upsetti bc the show was postponed due to corona
Oi Oi Oi wHat city?
I had concert tickets to go see them with my dad for my birthday, but we got too sick to go🤧
Wow. She’s brilliantly musical
Lol, I have the opposite "issue", I always try to translate the piano theory to guitar, and its weird lmao
An amazing talent!
Wow the seafoam green jag in the background
You play beautiful!
god i look up to her
Nice sounds.playing the piano on guitar. Reminds me of Stanley Jordan.
Phenomenal musician. So glad she's getting some exposure!
Ok calm down
for real. She's highly underrated.
William Bodie nah bich she deserves all the attention
@@skypekai how do you know he isn't calm? And, why does it matter?
HER SONGS SEEMS LIKE SHE IS NOODLING WITHOUT USING A PICK, IMHO, TOO MANY NOTES
She talks about music as if it is mostly visual. So interesting
because what she said about the canvas not being white?
Mathias Justesen , and I thought she talked about colors, too
She also paints all of her album artwork and hand-paints some of her guitars.
@@user-el5mh3pc5i oh shit that's so cool!!!
She could have synesthesia. I know I do, and it really opens up avenues creatively a lot of people can't access.
Not only is Yvette a great guitarist and songwriter but the drummer and bassist in Covet are just as good and they all have a cohesive sound that feeds off one another. She aint just a great guitar player shes a great musician and Covet isn't just a look at me shred over backing track type of band. Every note is a piece of the music.
Thank you. Yvette's work is definitely something but her solo music doesn't hold a candle to Covet and there's a reason for that. That rhythm section is fucking killer.
Yesss amazing band, that bassist had got Heart, dude such an inspiring band. Nice to find beautiful stuff when you’re old
Saam Her solo music is leagues better than Covet.
Check out galneryus. Much better brand. Their lives sound so much better then their studio version.

You think Yvette kicks butt on guitar? You should hear her play the piano.
And then everyone should she her paint.
and fard
Then play voilin
Her songs are amazing on both instruments.
@@rbnh9827 I've never felt so talentless, not that I had any talents to begin with lol
She incorporated bunch of piano techniques and made them work for Guitar in a very unique and creative way. Combine that with open tunings and you get this! Simply amazing!!!
@NiceGuyGamer Open tunings are just tunings that make a chord. Drop D is a good way to start, because that's also about tuning for certain intervals. With Drop D, you're tuning your E to D, making the string below (the A) go from the fourth to the fifth interval. Then you can play the root and the fifth (a power chord) by just fretting across both strings. Open tunings are just like that concept but applied across the whole guitar. For example, Open D is D A D F# A D, F# being the major third of D. All your strings are now tuned to the notes of a D major triad. You can strum across your guitar without fretting and get a nice sounding simple chord (as opposed to the big jazz chord standard tuning does when you do the same thing). By making all the intervals of a chord really close together, you can play tapping stuff pretty easily by jumping much shorter distances between notes.
I'm very similar to her. Started on piano and began translating things to guitar. Not in the same way she has, but in a very melodic and dynamic way.
@@kevinbrinkley374 oh
Yvette is one of the best and most creative guitarists I've ever heard in my life, she's soooo underrated. And the fact that she's a multidisciplinary artist who plays other instruments and is super good at drawing/painting and was able to create her own fictional universe i just- wow. Got me wondering if she's even human. A real gem. On top of that she seems like a sweet person. I wish her and her band would come to France but it never happens with that kind of bands😔
Lol France, the irony.
Jon Gomm, Tommy Emmanuel, Ted Greene, Lenny Breau, Andy McGee, Don Ross... - I wish this girl was something new, creative and exciting, but it just isn't true with respect to the exceptional things that are, and have been around for years and years.
@Virgil Grin tl:dr
or you're just thirsty and haven't heard the hundreds of bands that sounds exactly like this because they tap and pluck on the fret board with both hands.
@skankhunt42 Il me semble qu'elle a joué en France il y a pas longtemps, dans le Sud il me semble avec Covet peut-être je suis pas sûr

@John Smitty because it's all about weird time signatures/phrasing, intervals, and weird tunings.
@John Smitty what do weird time signatures, intervals, and tunings have in common.
@John Smitty it's not, since rock has never been about weird time signatures, if you actually googled it you'd find the answer but it boils down to the points I was making

@@moderntreasure1828 now you know! Lol
Okay, now I want a sparkly pink Talman
Fuck, I know right?
Yvette does these custom guitars herself and once upon a time she did commissions but with covet having a touring schedule now I don't know if she does anymore.
Talman is a secret weapon , and the only reason it's still being produced is there is a select group of fans.Odd, out of date design that proves it's value once you start playing.Seeing them still around always makes me smile.
Is Yvette Young’s talman modified or anything special going on with it?
I just want a talman. 😭
Yvette rules. Not my cup of tea stylistically, but she still rules.
I appreciate this comment. It's so nice to see somebody that shares the sentiment that style does not equal how good you are!
I appreciate her playing immensely but find her melodic sense utterly uninteresting.
It's not my thing, but I can sure appreciate her approach and talent.
Just sounds like random tapping.
This style is on trend apparently
It's called math rock, Reverb.
Just +ed some clarification in the description to bridge the ÷ and address the √ of any confusion. It was easy as π.
@@Reverb that was superb reverb yt mod much respect.
@prolet kult thats not what its about
@prolet kult Open your mind, grasshopper...
It would be great for the genre to get some exposure through videos like this, but, she's not JUST a math rock guitarist.
What I really like about her playing is that she produces a lot of "sus 9" which I like doing when playing the piano or the guitar (in standard tuning).
Very interesting and pleasant to hear.
Her use of extended harmony imbues her music with an emotional core which is highly lacking in a lot of technical guitar music. While Yngwie Malmsteen and John Petrucci want to overwhelm their listeners with awe at their unparalleled musicianship, better guitarists (like Yvette or the guys from Animals as Leaders) just want to make their audience feel things. So much extended harmony in math rock/prog metal these days gives me an intense feeling of nostalgia. I guess rockers have finally learned from jazz: broader intervals = more vibrant colors. Great time to be a music listener!
Pretty much whenever you're just a bit bored of playing maj min and 5 the next best chords are the sus ones
hate to be "that guy," but it's not a sus chord unless the 2 or 4 is replacing the third. You're thinking of Add 9 chords :)
@@Not_what_it_used_to_be came here to be the pedant, thanks for doing it for me
Later Activity lol! I was going to mention that as well. So, there's a bunch of us kinda being dicks 🤣🤣
Yvette is one of those people that's so good and so painfully humble you kind of want to shake them and make them say "I am good".
@Z Sleazoid be positive!
@Z. EO Speedwagon jesus bro you need a hug? butt fr tho, its all just practice and hardwork. none of these famous guitarists were just amazing as soon as they grab and instrument, itt takes a long time and hardwork and passion to get to this and you CAN do it too, just have fun with it and dont compare yourself
@Dahlia Speedwagon 💀
For all the beginners who are watching this and wondering why they can't play like this:
she's mostly playing in non-standard open tunings (like Dadd9 open). Also, don't forget about the capo.
I don't know why but modern guitarists don't really use capos anymore (on electric guitars).
If you're a beginner you should practice your rudiments. Technique-wise the most challenging aspect here is the fingerpicking so practice that first.
@mellowdrips Changing the tuning without touching the pegs or busting a string
@mellowdrips Well, it is often easier to tap the note correctly when they are tighten up by a capo. ^_^
if you're a beginner you should play the guitar normally not try to reinvent the wheel like this girl is doing.
@thedog556 who the fuck plays goo goo dolls?
Thank you
Covet's been getting a lot of exposure lately. Power to them
I think she could be one of the most important guitar players of this generation next to Tosin Abasi. Their minds are seriously incredible
The two of them in a room with their guitars and a camera
Absolutley mind bending stuff...great musician, such an intelligent women I'd love to meet her haha
Tosin has lost me over the years. Yvette explained it well: a lot of guitarists shove as many notes as possible into a song - Tosin does that. There's a reason why Animals as Leaders isn't the only band Matt Garstka is in. Sure, some songs like Brain Dance and Nephele have space and time to breathe, but most of their stuff has gotten too busy. Just a puke of notes.
@@hanburgundy4317 i dont think that's true. a lot of the songs on a joy of motion have quite a lot of room in them. para mexer and nephele off the top of my head for example. another year too. kascade is probably the only "busy" track i can think of from that album.
@@TheMonk111 I mentioned Nephele, but that song is more of Javier than Tosin. Subtlety is an artform and Tosin doesn't have much.

This is great, if sometimes a bit busy for my tastes. Always cool to see some extended technique/tapping in a non-shred context. Tal Farlow would be proud.
It's quite bittersweet watching her play the instrument. On one hand it's a very unique and brilliant approach to playing guitar. I've never seen someone use tapping in that manor before. It's quite inspiring to see how see creates and plays. But on the other hand I watch her play and then I ponder what the hell have I done with my life up until this point.
I love Yvette! She is everything that I wanna be... Super talented, funny, has her own style in terms of her fashion, is extremely beautiful and unique! She is such an inspiration to me ❣️
Never clicked a Reverb video so fast.

"It's bland" says the dad rockers who've listened to the same 4 chord vamps for the last 3 decades. Doesn't pickup on the sweet chromatic mediant and the mode mixture at the end because neither of those terms mean anything when you're just "I V vi IV"-ing your life away.
Have played guitar for 37 years, still can't bend on pitch or play distorded guitar with a decent vibrato. Also they don't know what scale degrees are because theory is bad for your creativity y'know
@@grandmaitredesmarionnettes1038 so I'm told
Well we always say that to understand music you have to know the rules(theory) behind it.. but to create one means to break those rules..
@@minimoogle3335 that's bullshit. There's nothing in music that's unquantifiable. That "breaking the rules" nonsense is something people with partial knowledge say to make themselves feel more justified in their ignorance; Dunning-Krueger incarnate. If you're working in 12tet, everything you can do has been done and has been defined. They're not rules, they're tools, and to think you can fix everything in the world with a hammer is either ignorance or ego.

I love the way she breaks down how she writes. It's so interesting and I fresh. Also, I've noticed how she explains complex things so simply, as opposed to others who try to complicate their processes.
Not to NOT talk about her talent. But her humility is awesome. I love when true talent does not brag, show off or sitting on a high horse. THAT is inspiring to me. That you can be great, and at the same time NOT be an ass about. May she/her band get great succes and may they be happy through their expand of life on this earth. Stay awesome out there. Peace and love!
Found YY's channel/band last summer & subbed immediately. Great attitude + approach to music, as a soloist, this instrument.

Robotic Meme I heard that too
i love warmth of her personality. She also has a great fashion sense. Those pants rock.
Not my style of music at all, but totally incredible player and really cool/refreshing way to approaching guitar..
When she said that she fingerpicks on that spot on the neck, I felt like damn thats cool because im the one whos playing almost EXACTLY like her and i found her on youtube like 2 days ago. Its almost scary how she plays the technics i thought i figured out by myself. The most "omfg-part" was when I realised that she ALSO sees the music more visually. Shes great
This is technically quite impressive, but better than that, it's damn pretty (if I may use that word) music. I listen to Covet quite a bit, they can rock out, too.
I wish I could try more open tunings but I've a floating trem, grrrr. Gotta get a tele or something
Definitely get a tele
Actually, that Talman is the perfect guitar for that style...it chimes...Explosions in the Sky used to use 90s Talmans...
But Teles are great...
I decked my strat trem for that
definitely convert it to a hardtail, pop the back plate open and add 2 more springs to your tremolo block and screw the claw all the way to the deck
What's wrong with a floating reverb unit?
I'm so glad I got to see Covet and Polyphia in Austin! It was worth standing out in a little bit of rain ^^
Thanks for the feature, Reverb.
Great skill and musical awareness, really like the guitar too. Ibanez TM1702, but a custom sparkle, the regular ones look too dull.
Not only is Yvette amazing at all of her chosen instruments, it's really amazing to watch musicians who are just as excited talking about playing they are actually playing. It's one of my favourite things to see.
really digging female figures with beyond awesome skills taking the spotlight in music! more, please!
Why does it matter if they are female?
Michael floyd exactly
@ because it is uncommon to see females with this level of skill getting the spotlight, not as many as male guitarrists. have you not payed attention to the music scene?
kiles7 I think some of us are more interested in just the art. If there’s anyone holding people back, it’s the music industry and not the fans. Having grown up around a huge number of friends in bands, I can tell you, in the past, it hasn’t been a meritocracy at all. Thanks to music making technology and the internet, we can get exposed to more artists. If you want to celebrate female artists, fine. Some of us just see an artist.
@@yoyartube Bitch, stfu. Im not on the SJW side. Im not highlighting the fact that she got the spotlight by being female. Can you not read correctly? I highlighted the fact that she has beyond awesome guitar skills and that being a female is nice since the majority of the attention in the music scene is dominated mostly by dudes. Fuck off with your shit just trying to come here and pick shit to argue.
Yvette's combination of mastery, enthusiasm, confidence, and humility is so refreshing ^_^ ✨
I can definitely hear Toe in her playing and it is my favorite sound so... I just became a fan
toe? 🦶
toe is so based
She’s inspiring me to step out of my comfort zone as far physical technique goes. I have a bad habit of anchoring my right hand while finger picking /tapping. Even though it’s easier for me to do while anchoring, I’ve noticed that I produce much more clarity and intention behind my playing when I don’t anchor. Great interview!
is this Noodle from Gorillaz?
Really interesting playing technique! Sounds awesome. My sausage hands could never play like that
Fantastic. If anyone ever decides to give her a Chapman Stick, all bets are off.
Exactly my thoughts when she was talking about picking higher up the fretboard!
Indeed indeed
She is so wonderful! I could watch her talk all night long.
3:58 ok I can play that
Moments later: or maybe its time to break my guitar
Man, couldn't have said the part about letting music breathe better myself. I think it's so important to have meaningful quietness (that isn't boring) to help you appreciate the other parts. Polyphia does this really well. I love Yvette's music and style. But I have to say that I like her youtube playthroughs of covet songs better than the full pieces. With all the working pieces it does sound too busy. The other musicians need to take the spotlight in an impactful way while yvette takes a step back. All this being said I am a huge fan and very inspired by her.
Yeah, busy music, but not for me.
She reminds me of Dylan from tiny moving parts. Both guitar playing and personality!
Like that humble and yet talented ,attitude. All the best to you and the band
I want her and Tosin Abasi to have a baby and create a 4th dimensional guitarist.
You should research Hawaiian slack key guitar which could be found throughout Hawai’i in the late 1800 to early 1900, but it was considered a Secret only shared amongst family members. Not until the late 60’s early 70’s during what was call “ The Hawaiian Renaissance era” boomed

It's so awesome to see a really smart musician in this genre. The way she talks about music is clearly heavily influenced by her classical training. She really pays attention to things that most guitarists barely know exist, like dynamics, silence, space and gesture. I think I have a new favourite guitarist :)
Im inspired after seeing Yvette on Andertons with the Captain. I've been playing 40 years and thought I had seen it all but along comes Yvette with her own unique style!. Just shows we can never master the guitar there is always something new to learn!. Would go and see Yvette if she ever came to Australia!.
