Hey Rhett! What an honor. This is so incredibly sweet and informative. My friend from Caroline Guitar directed me to this video and I’m so grateful! Thank you so much for the kind and comprehensive analysis- so grateful and happy to be a part of peoples’ open tuning discovery/journey 🖤… and thanks for sharing and amplifying how guitar music can be so emotive and healing! You rule 🙌🏻
Rhett, thank you so much for introducing me to Yvette and Covet. I’ve been binging their stuff since pretty much the hour this video went up, and have found their sound hugely inspiring. Yvette, thanks for sharing your music with us all! You made a point in one interview I watched about how the “shred” culture around guitar is technically impressive, but not as rewarding musically without dynamics. I had to show that clip to my partner, who’s been listening to me say that for years, like “see, she gets it!” I’ll do my best to get to Covet’s next show in central Florida to support you guys, and I’m already saving up for my own slime green telman. Such a cool guitar.
Merci beaucoup Yvette. You have an amazing sound and I wish you all the best. BTW I have seen a piano player who picked up the guitar and amazed and amazing band. Dweezil Zappa had on Rachel Flowers to play keyboard (her instrument of choice) on Inca Roads and then do a guitar solo on Montana. It would by great if you could collaborate.
Never Meant by American Football was the song that taught me this tuning. the way Yvette uses it makes it sounds completely different from the typical midwest emo players and i’ve always found that really impressive. it’s so easy to sound “samey” in open tunings
@@brandonxpagano they are interesting, I prefer FACGCe over them myself. But to be fair Yvette does have multiple songs in FACGCe as well as the other two tweaked tunings
Yvette is the full package, great musicianship, sense of melody, composition and technical prowess. Glad to see her getting more recognition, she and Covet most definitely deserve it
The genuine nature of your sentiment towards "another golden age of guitar players" is felt. These are some truly inspiring people in the world of guitar.
btw .... one of the "original masters" of alternate tunings was Joni Mitchell. She blew everybody's mind back in the day (my day) with dozens of alt tunings. There was this film clip from a movie where a bunch of people were at Mama Cass's house in Laurel Canyon .... David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Jackson Brown .... Clapton was there too, visiting. He was watching Joni play some stuff, and his jaw literally was in his lap. It was hilarious.
I had an opportunity to see her play last week. It was amazing! She’s so talented and original. I had a chance to chat with her after the show for a bit and she is such a humble and radiant individual. I was just thinking about her playing right before I found this video. Thanks as always for the great content man!
You nailed it with the modern young players and their approach. My 12 year-old son started a couple of years ago getting into Hendrix and all of the classic "guitar gods." Now he is learning this tuning and is a huge Yvette and Tim Henson fan. He and his generation have now nearly a hundred years of style to draw from and it's awesome to see how approaches have changed + the great music being made by artists like Yvette pushing the medium forward.
Nice to see the love for Yvette. I can understand getting lost for an hour watching her play. She is just really fun to watch, playing her songs, but especially watching her create music.
I’ve been following Yvette the past 3-4 years now. She is really creative in so many ways. Piano, violin, guitar, and she’s a fantastic artist too! And she’s the best at using effects to truly add to the music, not just layer something on top for the sake of it. I can’t wait to see what she does 5-10 years from now.
Man, really dig your shining a light on other amazing players you’ve found out about and sharing with us! Just really appreciate your whole positive vibe too. Keep going, man!
@@iceman5117 they didn’t break up! The drummer and bassist just wanted to explore different creative avenues. Different people stepped in to help with this new era of the band.
And Rhett steps into the Midwest emo vibe.... I'd be curious to hear you and Rick Beato do a deep dive on this genre together. She is an absolute standout talent shedding light on a 25 year old genre that's finally surfacing.
Yvette is great. She got me back into guitar and now I have a record of her Technicolor album and can fully play and sing Blossom which is one of her acoustic songs in a similar tuning. Learned so much just drilling that.
Alternate tunings is one of the greatest things about guitar. Opens up entirely new worlds. Using a capo on standard tuning alone does that. I wish I had a better grasp of the fretboard, especially with single strings tuned differently. like EADGAE or EADGBD but even that is hard cause you always have to keep that one string in mind that is detuned. it's a journey, i guess... but i do envy people who have nailed alternate tunings on guitar and just play most amazing things. from folk to prog and everything inbetween
Thanks for featuring Yvettes playing. Shes truly original. Got to see her w Covet and spent the whole time with my jaw on the floor. And just watching your facial expressions as you watch her play says it all. Its like watching a magician up close. You can watch every bit and still not know how shes doing what she does.
I came up with a tuning a few years back which is F A C E G B (or every second key on a piano starting on F). Each group of three consecutive strings are alternating major and minor chords, F major, A minor, C major, E minor, plus they can be played four strings at a time, five strings at a time, or all 6 strings, and you get a number of extended chords, all just by barring. All six make like a Fmaj7/9/11 or something like that.
Rhett! Thanks for sharing this man. Her playing (this tuning) opens up doors on the instrument and it’s invaluable. She’s an amazing artist and player! :)
This is pretty cool, even though I've never really been a fan of this style of guitar. I've seen dozens of people play in this kind of style over the last decade or more, and i always want to like it, but it never quite jives with me. Its like you said, its piano like. Im not into that when it comes to guitar. She's obviously amazing at what she does dont get me wrong though. It's just never been my cup of tea. However, i will say, the most IMPORTANT piece of information in this video IS the 'alternate tunings'. Honestly, if it weren't for those, i might have given up on guitar the last couple years, even though ive been playing for over 20 years now. Playing in standard/drop D & C tunings just got so old to me. Felt like i couldn't create anything that sounded fresh or original anymore. Everything sounded done before, or re-hashed. As soon as i started messing around with weird alternate tunings, my life changed, and my guitar playing actually became better and way more interesting, I'll never look back. I haven't played in stand tuning now in over year. I've played now in over 20+, maybe even 30, different tunings, and I can't get enough of it. So that's the biggest takeaway of this video imo. Its actually even sorta hard for me now to listen to other people on YT play in standard tuning lol. Btw, just wanted to say its always awesome when you and JHS collaborate. Keep up the good work
Great vid and breakdown of Yvette's playing. She's really taking it to the next level. Your Tidal-caster(?) sounds great, too! Beautiful instrument. Chris and Matt do great work.

Hey Rhett! Glad you caught up with Yvette and her band Covet! She’s from The SanFrancisco Bay Area (which is were I live) and I’ve been following her for several years! I just happened upon her on Instagram and have been hooked ever since! Lucky for me I was able to catch a few of her local shows before she became super popular. I’m extremely happy for her recent success as she truly deserves it! She’s the real deal an amazing artist in many mediums her guitar playing is singularly exquisite and original! She started out as a child as a classically trained pianist and found the guitar later. But my oh my what she’s done with it since!!! Being a modest player of the instrument myself, she has been a real revelation and a tasty treat to my ears and mind! Thanks for showing one of my favorites some love and respect! I do like this genre of music. Yvette plays so effortlessly. Fun to watch and hear. Thanks for explaining her style. You sound pretty good like that too.

I had a friend in high school that was a drummer his entire life (left handed mind you) picked up a guitar in his senior year of HS (right handed) and just started playing math rock like a pro! He can't play an open chord or like a Beatles tune but he can play and transpose this stuff like he has been playing it his entire life.
Learned piano from a young age, and have always struggled with how to approach guitar, what she said has me excited to try again and see if thinking about it like that will help
This is a style I have heard a few newer bands like Chon, Plini, and Intervals experimenting with that I find amazing and extremely satisfying to listen to. It is so advanced, and so melodic, and musical. I had not heard of Yvette Young before now and look forward to hearing more of her playing. This final comment you made about a new age in guitar. I totally agree. I feel so conventional now with all that I've been doing throughout the years, but it's nice to be inspired to reach further.
I got to see Covet with Hail The Sun and Polyphia back in 2018, such a great show. I had never heard of them at the time and Yvette's guitar playing absolutely blew my mind
Subscriberino. I love these videos you’ve been doing where you kinda just gush over a really great guitar player and try to bring some of their mojo to viewers attention to listen to or internalize. It’s inspiring, and it’s exactly the kind of content that makes me want to pick up my instrument more than pretentious gear talk or preachy theory diatribes. Always solid work Rhett!
I've had the pleasure of talking to Yvette online. She is not only an amazing player, but a wonderfully genuine person, completely humble and interested in everything and anyone around her. A delightful woman.
She’s awesome and definitely at the top of this style. This type of playing is a whole scene though, many have mentioned American Football as a big influence. Make sure to check out Tiny Moving Parts as well.
Wow! this young lady is a refreshing change of pace or, more accurately, sound. Digging the guitar Rhett, love the mashup of the P-90 in the neck and the Tele pick-up in the bridge.
Great review and breakdown, Rhett, and thanks for the introduction to this artiste. Btw, your friend Rick Beato is a strong proponent of writing with both the melody and bass line in mind.
This is a fantastic tuning indeed - played with it two minutes in and founds bach's cello suite 1 prelude straight away - bonkers! Open f 6th, open c on 4th, open a 2nd, open f 3rd, open a on second obviously not in g min but hey it's deep like cello ... bingo the rest follows easily
Yvette is amazing and such a delight to have in the scene. i had her yy10 for a long while (had to sell because bills ) and it was so much fun to play around on facge is for sure a strange tuning to jump onto the first time. but once you play around on it its so much fun!
Hey Rhett, very nice video! I’m sure I speak for many who really dig your instrumentals as well. I have purchased several of your courses and have really enjoyed the learning. Definitely worth the price. My knowledge of the fretboard has grown as well as my playing! Thank you Sir!
Rhett, the look on your face reminds me so much of when I first started watching guitar players on UA-cam. The shaking your head in disbelief, absolutely engrossed in what you're seeing. Just when you think you've seen it all, someone like Yvette comes along and breaks new ground and does something totally unique.
It's cool to see you swept away by a style. I never quite got anyone to join me on my hype train when I discovered Yvette a few years back, so it's also just nice to feel vindicated in my excitement lol
The Rain Song was my first song I ever learned with a different tuning it was pretty cool learning new chord structures..( maybe not structure but how guitar is played all together) Music can really blow your mind at some of the things that's been done.
Last Night we went with my wife to Julian Lage's concert here in Atlanta, Was a beautiful experience, and thank you Rhett and your video about Julian, thank you so much, My best Cristian Troncoso. Atlanta GA. ( thank you for sharing )
Simply.... WOW.... Thank you Rhett for showing me something I might ( and most likely would have) never seen or realized. I Thank You Yvette for your creativity & ingenuity, and the new ideas you've kindled.
I'm going to have to try this tuning on my coodercaster style tele. I can think back to growing up in the 90's, hearing a revolutionary player, and then scrambling to find any possible recording of any quality. I remember doing this when I "discovered" Michael Hedges, Stanley Jordan, etc etc. Now we have the benefit of HD videos and analysis of technique, we are spoiled with how accessible all of this is.
I saw them play this past weekend. Even live the soundscaping, writing, and playing are incredible and emotional p.s. - I believe she was using an AC30 on stage
Yvette is the real deal. She is incredible, but her playing live is something even bigger. So glad you are talking about her and the whole idea of this tuning. Lots of the music I listen to has this tuning and I think it's something that everyone should give a try. Cheers.
Zounds like Jimmie spheriss z"dragon is dancing" late 70's debut album ..I saw him n Phoenix with the moody blues...a 4 hour show...I worked at grand canyon and had access to peyote...it really was a trip I won't ever forget.that day there was a 100 year sandstorm and the whole city was surreal ,,even without the peyote.needless to say the concert was stellar.
Glad to see you talking about Yvette, she's my favorite player to emerge within the last few years. I even had the chance to meet her last summer at Andy McKee's Musicarium.
The classical piano influence shows on the way she incorporates Arpeggios in most of her playing! I think Yngwie Malmsteen pioneered that approach to guitar back in the 80's although in a very different style! Cool!

This is such fantastic playing. Now a huge fan of Yvette after seeing this vid. Just tried it out the FACGAE tuning too and wow! just wow!
Recent subscriber here. Your appreciation for Yvette and Madison Cunningham sealed the deal. Two of my favorite modern musicians. Great content!
Nice video, she opened up my mind to a new way of playing. She's incredible. Thx
I agree that we are in a golden age of guitar, but mostly melody. I can't tell you how many emotion stirring modern songs stay in my head all day.
This video has mad inspirational vibes, is this what all his stuff is like!
Gonna have to stay tuned!
Excellent video Rhett!
Great video and I love her playing! So poetic!!
Yvette is an absolute treasure! Incredible artist and musician!
Now we have the benefit of HD videos and analysis of technique, we are spoiled with how accessible all of this is.
very beautiful playing.
I saw them play this past weekend. Even live the soundscaping, writing, and playing are incredible and emotional
p.s. - I believe she was using an AC30 on stage
Floored !! Man, Thanks for sharing this and your insights... now also a Huge Fan!!! :)
Thanks for staying on the "cutting edge" of guitar. Your articulation and teaching sensibility makes the viewing experience lively and educational. 👍👍
This is epic ….Hands down one of the best Rhett Shull videos ….ever. Loved this …..this tuning config is amazing
Glad to see you talking about Yvette, she's my favorite player to emerge within the last few years. I even had the chance to meet her last summer at Andy McKee's Musicarium.
Where ya been brother :0) Yvette is awesome! Caught one of her videos a year or so ago and was absolutely floored. Super talented!
The classical piano influence shows on the way she incorporates Arpeggios in most of her playing! I think Yngwie Malmsteen pioneered that approach to guitar back in the 80's although in a very different style! Cool!
