  • The Montgomery Memorial, honoring John J. Montgomery, who took flight two decades before the Wright Brothers, is a little known monument in the southern part of San Diego, CA, only a few miles from the border. In this video we take a quick visit to the monument and look at the history behind it. It truly is a unique memorial that can be seen for miles around.
This memorial was dedicated on May 21, 1950 at the location of Montgomery's first flight in August 1883. When Montgomery made that flight he became the first person in the Western Hemisphere to make a controlled flight in a heavier than air machine.
The Memorial, sometimes known as the Silver Wing due to its most prominent feature, is located on Coronado Ave, about a mile east from Interstate 5.

Just a quick correction. I accidentally said "international airport" when referring to Montgomery Field. I don't believe it would quite qualify as an international airport, though the Casa Machado Mexican restaurant there is great.

I appreciate this. John J. Montgomery was a first cousin of my mom's great-grandmother. I enjoy the history and will check this monument out the next time I am in San Diego.

He deserves much more attention. I’m a local. I would be amazed if any students at Montgomery High would even know who He is

I used to live in Clairemont and planes from Montgomery Field would fly over my house all day. I never knew who Montgomery was. But thanks to you, San Diego Steve, I now know! ❤

I would guess that they went with that wing to just get attention of those who drive by, I know it worked with me. My first wife had a grandmother who lived down near Montgomery High and I often drove by on that highway (at least, it was back then) down below. Thanks for filling in what it was all about as--being a local--I never felt the need to go up the hill to see what it was about...much like relatives who lived near Meteor Crater in Winslow, AZ, but had never been to it. Again, thanks, Steve, appreciate your efforts.

Great job with this video. I live in Seattle now but grew up and attended MOH. This made me homesick.

Yeah, it is really nice. Quite a few people were in their cars eating lunch and enjoying the view when we went.

I went to Montgomery HS across the street from the park (class of 1980). I know my sister likes to walk around that park a lot. It's a nice walking park.

A very interesting piece of history. Thank you. 🙂 I'm hopeful that things have at least started to come back to normal for people being able to get out and enjoy the sights and company of others.

I have passed by that park many times and wondered why there was a large wing on the hill. We always just called it Wing Park. I'll have to check it out next time I drive by I'll get out and walk around.

Really cool. I had no idea that was there and I spend time in the South Bay area in my teens. Also, a minor correction that Lindbergh Field is the International Airport. Montgomery field is a general aviation Airport, but still, hw has an airport named after him.

Yes, I didn't realize I said it till after I posted it. I put a comment up correcting myself. Thanks for the comment!

Could your mention of San Diego Airport be confused by Mongomery Field, in Kreany Mesa?
San Diego Airport has always been Lindbergh Field.

So it was controlled glider flight, not controlled heavier-than-air powered flight.

Nice!! I live close to this park!! I have a little video on my page I filmed on my drone of the wing. I used to run at this park all the time and even my gym is right down the road !

I’m guessing others have mentioned this; MYF or Montgomery Field is a municipal, general aviation field. The International Airport here in San Diego is Lindbergh Field.

I’m sorry, but the 1st person to fly a glider successfully was George Cayley in 1853.

Are there any photos of his glider? I'm skeptical, but willing to be convinced by good evidence.

If you Google "John J Montgomery Glider" some pictures show up. There is a replica of it at the San Diego Air & Space Museum too.

@@SidetrackAdventures I found some pictures of a few of his planes. Most looked iffy, but one appeared to be on track, and may have flown pretty well.
My real point with asking was that the video should have included those pictures.
