I think this might be one of the most enjoyable videos you’ve made in months
Glad you enjoyed it! Also, ouch!
Also, that 2D graphical representation of old (and newer ones) builder games, that isometric perspective and sprite work is just so visually pleasing :)
Much truthiness
Curious of your thoughts on the Populous series - specifically Populous: The Beginning. Another god game with an emphasis on city building.
I haven't played it since its demo phase :)) I do have it on GOG so I'll get to it eventually.
Didn't expect you to put Frostpunk as "high" in your ranking. I legit know 2 people besides of us who played it!
well depending on how many gaming people you know, those extra 2 people might be a larger proportion than you'd initially consider. Also, seeing as how nowadays citybuilders are very much a niche genre, you can't expect a lot of mainstream normie gamers to be exposed to them to begin with.
Well, here is suggestion for you, game called 'spellcaster university', it is not necessary a city builder in a classical sense, maybe more managerial style, but has heavy elements taken from city builders. It would probably be at the end of iceberg, though, not sure many people heard of it.
I'll look it up, thanks for the suggestion! I do tend to stream new city builders and RPGs, so if you're interested in newer stuff as well then keep an eye for my streams ;)
@@StefaNonsense I do indeed peek here and there at the streams :)
Hey. Stefan. Psst.
You like knights and merchants?
Do you want it without combat?
Just a big city aquarium of villagers doing their adorably animated jobs?
You want Townsmen.
Yes, it's a port/mobile title, but I'm telling you, as somebody who spent childhood on K&M: it's exactly what you want.
Hey Fox, I actually don't ;) ua-cam.com/video/UG26rMFcRis/v-deo.html
I even commented on that video. XD
I'm sorry, it's been three years. But you know what? I still love that game. Still have it on my phone. Even two phones later.
Hey, I'm not stopping you from enjoying it :) A big part of the appeal of Knights and Merchants is in its visual style and the super detailed sprite-work and animations.
I don't know how it was elsewhere, but here it got localized, so it was one of the few games I got to enjoy in my native language. And the voice acting was spot on.
Knights and Merchants?
Banished really frustrated me because the AI was too dumb and would go out of their way to get themselves killed in a game where keeping them alive is already pretty difficult.
I know exactly what you're talking about. The subsequent Banished-inspired games improved on that, thankfully :)
Ooooh this comment here. Not to mention that it really does nothing to teach anything. Banished pissed me off so bad, and I like finicky stuff like TTDD or OpenTTD
No idea how u do it! I can barely find time to write some text 😅
Keep up the great videos!
I lead a less complicated life, for certain ;)
Oh man, u mention Settlers 3 but not Settlers 4 which better in all aspects and has a more active community?
Also, why no mention of the classic of its era, the Simcity 3000? im pretty sure people have played this game more than most of the aforementioned games.
Anyway, it was a solid breakdown of some of the most known city builders! Good job.
There's a fair bit of subjectivity involved with any sort of list like this. Personally, I almost never see Settlers 4 mentioned when the series is discussed, usually Settlers 2 is the one that comes up most commonly as hardcore nostalgia-filled and Settlers 3 as the introduction to the series and strategy/citybuilding games for many. As for the Simcity series, I start the list with 2000, which again, is the title that comes up most, at least during my three decades of gaming activity and interaction with various retro-focused communities. But like I said, there's subjectivity to be had since I can't have possibly played everything that ever was, just a fair bit of them :) Thanks for watching and I hope you found out about some titles you didn't know about :)
Great video 👍 Did you like Pharaoh: a New Era?
Glad you enjoyed it! I haven't gotten around to trying Pharaoh: A New Era yet.
How can the first SimCity be missing from this video?
Also, I didn't play Tropico but I played Tropico 4 quite a bit and it's really more of a city builder than a political simulation. It's still there but not as important as you say it is for the first one.
Another game I played a long time ago and quite enjoyed, and it should be at the bottom of the iceberg, is : Moonbase.
First, thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it. Now onto your question.
Short answer: subjectivity.
Longer answer: All such lists - and also reviews and analyses - are inherently subjective, to a larger or smaller degree. I could not have played everything that was ever released in the genre and at the end of the day, the finished result tends to slant towards direct experience and personal preference, in such matters.
