Basically Zippos are becoming more international which means more profits for zippo but also makes them susceptible to economic wars. But they can also set another factory like what they did with Canada at some point.
True however they’ll never open one in China , if they did China would quit buying them , they want American made lighters so there’s pros and cons , I personally want America to use zippo again , like they use to but the anti smoking laws passed in Congress are doing two things at once killing tobacco here yet making them rich over seas as well , it irritates me to an extent they do this at the federal level
The "Factory" in Canada was never a real factory not one Zippo was made from Canada, all they did was bottom stamp plain and designed Zippos (from the US) with "Niagara Falls, Ontario" and pack and shipped the Zippos from Canada The "factory" in Canada was a Tax Dodge for Zippo from 1949 to 2002
Valid concerns, but: 1. setting up a new factory doesn't solve a demand-side issue, 2. Chinese people like Zippos *specifically* because they're American, and will pay a lot to get an authentic one, and 3. the more sanctions, economic warfare, or bans are slapped onto a particular item in China, the cooler it is to be seen with that thing. Zippo's only problem with domestic consumers is that they've become makers of pocket-sized Harley Davidsons, lol.

If you think about it using Zippo lighters instead of Bics is probably better for the environment because your not constantly throwing out cheap plastic lighters
The biggest wtf moment I have with Zippo is them using the same hinge on Standart and Armor cased lighters. I mean..why is it so hard to make the stronger hinge for the Armor Zippo? :D
That's right. I'm a musician and Japan and China have just about bought up all the vintage USA made guitars and then they jacked the prices up sky high. People that don't even smoke use lighters. Who wants to breathe sulfur from matches.. Valuable necessity.
A little insight on the American market, i'm an 18 year old and majority of people over the age of 15 have smoked weed. I own lots of zippos, but I don't know anyone else who does. Teens/young adults almost never smoke cigs (Everyone vapes instead), but lot's smoke weed. They all use bics or those clipper lighters. I've let my friends use my zippo, they think it looks cool, but they genuinely have trouble using it because they aren't used to the lighter staying lit if you don't close the lid. Additionally, normal Zippos cannot be used with pipes or other marijuana utensils, you need a pipe zippo. I have a pipe zippo, I find it easier to use than a bic on pipes and bongs, but my friends hate it, they burn themselves on it because they have trouble closing it with one hand. I feel like they'd get the hang of it though if they bought one themselves. I feel like Zippo should maybe try pushing the pipe lighters a bit more, since most younger people smoke a lot more weed compared to tobacco. Or maybe they should try improving their butane inserts, and start selling Zippos that come standard with them. Zippos are also pretty expensive for a lighter, most young adults are gonna get a $1 lighter over a $25 lighter. Also I feel like lots of people in my age group aren't willing to maintain these lighters, you need to refill Zippos and replace the flints often as well, hense why I think they should start pushing Zippos that come with the butane inserts as they don't need much maintenance.

Thank you for your insights. I found them very helpful, but counter-intuitive (in a positive way that makes me think). Comrade T MAN, what ShadowDotNet is saying means that demand for Zippos should be DECREASING, which means that the prices should be decreasing. Do you have any insights as to why prices are increasing? Thanks.
Zippo (ZMC) has been targeting sales overseas for the past 30 years. As for China I know that Zippo has "workers" in China not in factories but smaller engineering and design outlets and Zippo has been shipping thousands of (plain) lighters of every different finish you can think of to Japan just for the Japanese Market. Most of those "plain" Zippos then get sent from Japan to China and have the designs or engravings put on them and sent back to Japan for sale. Why ? because the Chinese can do these designs cheaper and have the skills to do this. Interesting Video Thank you
That’s the thing stop selling to an adversary of the United States , is it really doing any harm to the us ? No , but they could get screwed if they decide “ zippo is a capitalist product of evil “ buy good old Winnie the Pooh who’s in charge over there .
"They" (which would be the state legislature) raised the smoking age to 21 in an effort to try, or at least pretend to try, to keep kids and young adults from smoking, as smoking is legitimately a health issue (no judgement). I guarantee you, Philip Morris did not lobby for this law to "be able to send more product overseas." Philip Morris's interests overseas are not remotely bound by how much product is sold here, and as a business, would want to maximize product in every region it can. Further, shipping is a cost to a business, not a profit center. Making a product more expensive to cover shipping does not positively impact a business. Philip Morris lobbied for the law as a stay to prevent further, tougher anti-smoking legislation; it was a puff piece they supported to create an image of responsibility, specifically aimed at reducing further legislative action that would regulate them further. As for why Zippos are getting more expensive? Same reason lots of collectibles are: watches, LEGOs, Zippos, and old video games are all getting more expensive because Millennials are getting older, have more money, and want to collect cool stuff as a distraction from the craziness of the post covid world. A $20 Zippo is a cheap novelty to an American, but to a Chinese person it's a luxury item that costs nearly a full day's pay for an office worker in Beijing. It's a status symbol. They're cool and edgy in a way that Chinese people just can't get enough of, on top of being a flex to pull out. Even the *communist party representative* at my office had one. Blaming the popularity overseas for their declining market share in America doesn't make much sense, though. Don't blame foreigners for loving a country's product more than its own people do. As for trade wars and sanctions don't even worry. These guys will literally take out a bank loan to fly over to Japan or Korea on cheap flights, then load up suitcases for resale in China.
6:07 True. The production tolerances were smaller back then. An easy to see difference is the way inserts are made today vs. back then: The ones, even in the early 1990s, were soldered. Look at the area around the striking wheel towards the base of it. Today, Zippo uses epoxy. Yeah, it's a minor difference. But to us, the collectors, users, they matter.
