I can't believe the Switch doesn't have better versions of streetpass and miiverse, it's crazy how they just stripped away all personality from the system compared to 3ds and WiiU.
@@lukebrady65 As a 3DS and a Wii U owner of my own. I know an absolute fact that not everything was beautiful and pretty when he was still around. Blaming his death won't make a difference
@M64bros What i mean by Satoru Iwata is the joyful playfulness he brought to everything. All the personality on their systems was heavily influenced by Satoru Iwata. Just look at the Wii U interface. When you boot up the Wii U you're presented with hundreds of different Miis playing different messages from around the world. From the awesome Miiverse and the amazing social aspect. Even how well the Nintendo eShop interface was presented on that system. From the awesome music that plays in the background and if you have the volume up on the GamePad they both come together to play one harmony. Organising your games in proper folders. Remember how much more personal Nintendo Directs used to be ? I'll never forget 2014 Reggie vs Iwata. In contrast, the switch is completely void of any personality. it's completely bland with only two black or white themes. No music, no StreetPass, no Miiverse, no 3DS themes, no nothing. The e-shop is an absolute joke. What a laggy and unorganized mess. The Joy-Cons are cheap and nasty. Joy-Con drift! Never discounting games and being completely anti consumer ( remember Nintendo Selects ? ) Charging a yearly subscription to access their older content when the Nintendo Wii U had the Virtual Console where you could purchase older games at very reasonable prices. Nintendo has become corporate. They have become a profit driven first company. They are forgetting all the magical things that make them Nintendo. Nintendo's current president just doesn't get it.
@@lukebrady65 Yeah, all that stuff really doesn't nostalgia blind me pal. There were also DMCA takedowns when him and Reggie were still around as well so don't just pretend everything was beautiful and pretty back then. Also the real reason why they are porting the Wii U games to the switch is so that way a bunch of new gen fans can try them out because back then they weren't able to get a Wii U. Truthfully, It's the DMCA legal team in Japan that's making those decisions since Japan has strict copyright rules, not just for Nintendo but for other companies as well. Nintendo still cares about his legacy. Back then. They were a bunch of people weaponizing his death and blaming his death. But thankfully after the Mario movie credit scene and some smart Nintendo fans telling those types of people to knock it off, it seems that thankfully the weaponizing Iwata's death seemed to thankfully die down. I still play on my 3DS and my Wii U still to this day but you still cannot deny the fact that not everything was beautiful and pretty during that era.
@M64bros You're clearly not following the conversation. The point I'm making is the reason all of these things were so awesome is because of Satoru Iwata influence making sure these things were implemented on their systems and their current president Shuntaro Furukawa not given a crap about any of these things. Who said Nintendo doesn't care about Satoru Iwata legacy ?
The 3DS/Wii U Era felt like a huge party. Everybody was welcomed and almost every major release was anticipated and celebrated. Nintendo's ads with Reggie and Iwata were super creative. The directs, the unbelievable hype behind Smash 4, the 3D Debut of mainline Pokemon. It all just felt like this grand new venture into something special. I'm glad Nintendo's doing better than before financially, but hopefully a future console generation can live up to that big party feeling.
As a 3DS and Wii U owner of my own, that era did have some good memories but not everything was beautiful and pretty during that era. I'm not nostalgia blind
@M64bros As someone who got a wiiu late and thought it was trash till i bought it. It felt alive and comfy, where is the switch is isolated and bland. No ui/menu music, simple boring ui, next to no social features, oh and eshop no longer has user reviews yay. Also now we pay for online, but most games dont offer any online play and alot that do have shit netcode.
@@pink-_-621 Sure, it had good memories but you cannot deny the fact it has massive flaws, the year of Luigi cost them $457 million, the Wii U had horrible marketing, terrible advertisements, cringy commercials, Not everyone was able to get one, We lost Iwata during that era, Star Fox zero, Metro prime federation Force, animal crossing amiibo festival, games locked that require you to use amiibo, Mario tennis ultra smash and so much mnore. Sure the switch had it's flaws but it didn't have any behind the scenes problems like the Wii U and 3DS era, Also nowadays the Wii U is kind of a pointless console to purchase along with the 3DS, nowadays the switch is doing a lot better. There are classic games out there that you can play with or without the switch online membership and Nintendo has improved their classic games ever since, Metroid Prime remastered, pikmin 1 and 2, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, links awakening and miitopia. The reason why I love the Wii U ports better is because it can give new gen players a chance to play those games because not everyone was able to get a Wii U during that era.
@@pink-_-621 Okay I was a little bit too hard in the beginning and I still enjoy both my Wii U and my 3DS. So sorry about what I said from earlier. I still play on all three switch 3DS and Wii U
The 3DS/Wii U Nintendo era just felt more welcoming. When you set up your Wii U, it just felt like you were being welcomed into a new world of gaming. When setting up the switch, it feels as basic as setting up your brand new Xbox series x.
A combination of factors made the wii u/3ds era more special to me: 1-The first HD debuts of nintendo IPs, and their first portable games with 128 bit quality graphics. 2- The systems launched in the middle of the reboot era, with familiar faces like kid icarus, pikmin, luigi' mansion and starfox returning, aside from all the stuff they were bringing back from their classic era 3-It was the first era where social media played a huge roll. The nintendo directs and rise of nintendo fan youtubers created a feeling of community that helped make each major release an event!
"and their first portable games with 128 bit quality graphics." In 640x200. And what is "128 bit quality graphics?" LOL! A shame you didn't mention the 3D. I could have agreed with that.
In my case social media instead of creating a feeling of community with other Nintendo fans basically dissolved it: I used to be active in various forums, befriend the regulars and sometimes form friendships which in some cases are still lasting but when social media took forums place during the 3DS/WiiU era I really struggled to do that and this almost drove me away from gaming. Lately I decided to step back from almost all online gaming communities and make gaming friends in person at conventions and tournaments even if this means traveling since I live in a little town with a very weak gaming scene.
I miss old Nintendo. They used to take risks and make original stuff and be fun. Nowadays it just doesn’t feel the same. Nintendo doesn’t do that anymore. Things like Mario sports games went from one of the best to bad on switch. Wii U is a great console and I think it would have done well if Nintendo did better marketing wise. But I think the best part of this era is the fact that Nintendo actually cared about fans back then
Yes I agree that getting a switch and the Wii U ports are better then getting a Wii U it’s self but personally the Wii U is a better option. But they didn’t give a discount for the ports which is ridiculous. Plus if you want to get a Wii U get one. It’s a better time to get it now
And plus they actually cared about fans during that era. Even though most of them were with the Wii and 3Ds while barely anyone had a Wii U sadly. Club Nintendo was really good but now we have My Nintendo
@@IAm-zo1bo I think otherwise. Have you not seen how Nintendo was back then? They gave great offers, they’ve listened to fans a lot more, even though the Wii U was there second worst failure they still released games for those who had it. They were way more open too. Nintendo nowadays has a paywall to play online with a bad online service. They’ve cancelled events too. Nintendo actually cared back then. Now they feel like it’s for the money. Don’t tell me they didn’t care just because they failed back then.
@@WailingGecko2 Their Nintendo Creators Program, closure of fan games and how they didn't want people to play Melee at EVO, all before the Switch era, says otherwise
I remember when the Wii U and 3DS were big and even around the end of the Wii, the games were full of charm and I find myself going back to those consoles much more for playing with my family. We still play nintendo land, we still play Mario party 10, we still play game and wario, but we almost never play switch together.
@Miror B GOD We definetly do, though my parents still much prefer the wii. The switch is set up in the basement and the wii is in the family room with the big TV
2017 to early 2018 was good but since then it's just been lackluster ports or decent to bad games 3ds had like 5 different Mario franchises running at the same time. and it was more fun than the switch when it comes to design and capabilities with the microphone, camera, and stuff like those mii mini games and themes. switch doesn't really come with fun things like the 3ds di
Totally agree. I still collect stuff for my 3ds over the switch (crazy how expensive it has gotten after Nintendo dropped support). I never thought I would say it but the 3ds has turned into my favorite handheld of all time due to its creative functions, games, and virtual console. Before that the gameboy family was my favorite, DMG-GBA (SP-not so much). RIP Iwata
@@nerdbit84 N3DS family was and still is my all-time favorite line of Nintendo handhelds, even before the Switch released. The entire line, as well as the Wii U were the main reasons why I was a huge Nintendo fan, back then. Notice how I use past tense, though. I don't hate the Switch, but I hate the company that made it.
I was in a call with a friend last night and we were doing a comparison on commercials and just ads in general for Nintendo and we saw how much more personality the Wii U/3DS era was compared to the Switch. We saw commercials for the Switch and most of them were about some happy family playing on their Switch consoles, then we see the ones for the Wii U and while it still had those kind of commercials, there was also that Super Mario 3D World ad where the guys playing had their house turning into the game itself.
I will say the Wii U had some cringe ads for the console itself but damn I definitely miss that era of commercials where Nintendo animated stuff over live action. The only equivalent I can think of is that one Odyssey ad where Mario is dancing with real life people but its pretty much just animating a scene from the game so its not as unique or memorable or quirky as the stuff like those Mario Kart ads where real people were racing eachother, or the 3DS announcement trailer with Reggie getting chased. Tbh Nintendo were doing ads kinda like this back in the GameCube days too (even earlier in a couple of examples), but yeah I definitely miss this old style of ad, all the new ones are a shot of a guy in a chill house looking at his tv out of shot then showing the game on the tb
Agreed 100%. I'd rather have a separate home console and portable console that do their functions at 100% rather than a 2-in-1 that only does 50% on each function. They can both have the same games, but I want a Nintendo console that is a beast at home, and I want another DS-style console that can run games at the level of the Switch. That's my personal opinion, though.
I agree. Back in the WiiU and 3DS and early Switch era the made detailed and working Games. They allowed exploration in their games and didn't fix every cool glitch the community found, the second they found it. They even had free working online. They worked with the blue ocean strategy and tried to do things that other companies didn't (in a positive way) Today there are games like Pokemon Legend Arceus. The have cheap ports like the Booster Course Pass. The patch like every glitch that makes their games fun, the second it is found. In games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe exploration is just forbidden. Lakitu picks up the second you are just one pixel of the track. The online service is paid and doesn't even work that well. They are just doing the same as things other gaming companies now like paid subscriptions and micro transactions. They are just a shadow of what they were before, which is just sad.
The switch in my opinion feels like it was rushed a put together because the failure of the Wii U ,also I’m surprised that you didn’t talk about the pricing of switch games and the downgrade of club Nintendo to My Nintendo.Good video I’m subbing
Thanks for subbing. Pricing slipped my mind, and I only remembered about it after uploading. Otherwise I would have included it because it's a massive issue. What gets me most about it is their small scale games that used to be handheld games are now fully priced. And yeah My Nintendo is a really good point, should have included it in the community aspect.
Jayden C Club Nintendo you could get Wii U / 3ds games ,cool items ,exclusive games , gig saw puzzles with My Nintendo you only get posters and wallpapers
@@Jdudec367 it was like a prize shop for Nintendo. You could buy games, merchandise etc. for my Nintendo all you can get is a poster which made this a Huge downgrade for club Nintendo
17:26 The Wii U Gamepad is, well, bigger and less portable, but man, it's so much more comfortable to hold than the Switch with attached joycons in my opinion. The Gamepad's buttons being a little larger and further away from each other also makes my hands happier. And in both clicking the buttons and the design of the joy cons, Switch really looks and feels cheaper. The D-Pad on the Gamepad feels great, whereas the one on the Switch Pro Controller feels very bad.
As a 3DS and a Wii U owner of my own, I know an absolute fact that not everything was beautiful and pretty back in the day and it's the truth and surprisingly the switch era has gotten way better
One thing I miss about the Nintendo 3DS/Wii U era is how relaxed the community used to be. Now you have so many morons defending EVERYTHING they do. I can't help but wonder if they're the reason why Switch Sports exists.
Yeah I completely agree. The fanbase has become so toxic recently, I really miss the more niche chill community 5+ years ago. It's probably due to a combination of the pandemic and a massive influx of children being introduced to the switch lol
@@WumbleWasp The marketing really changed nintendo. The marketing on the wii u was crap, causing people to hate it. The switch brought everyone back and now people can't help but defend it.
The switch is overall pretty disappointing nowadays. The glory days of the switch were 2017. The switch has no personality, lackluster games, and is underpowered. I don’t understand why people say the Wii U had no games when half the first party games on switch are Wii U ports. They’ve gotten lazy since the switch has sold so well. With the Wii U they were forced to make good games since nobody was buying it. I always thought the switch was lacking but this video really solidified it in me. The switch sucks tbh.
I agree with you on so many points, especially when you talk about the human aspect of the company under Iwata. I have fond memories of the Wii U days and of the games I still play on that console. Thank you also for pointing out the D-pad and, more in general, the drop in build quality.
This video was fascinating! I never noticed just how slow the Switch's output has been... or how surprisingly fast the Wii U's was in comparison. All hail the Wii U! :P
you just summed up why the switch sucks and said you still think the switch is good. just tell us how you really feel! anyway your opinion is a huge W in my opinion and great job making it!
I agree %100 about what you said in the video. The WiiU/3DS era felt fun and exciting. The systems and games had personality. I miss the menu music and Miiverse.
The Switch feels so lifeless for lack of a better term. I recently bought another Wii U as my old one had finally bit the dust and I gotta say, the Wii U is such a great console. Look - the Switch being completely portable is nice. To have a console be portable while also having great graphics and decent battery life is impressive. But I love the character that the Wii U has. I love the whole aesthetic. Besides, the Switch is so thin, and that's not a very good thing to me. I'd like to say I have small hands, but it gets so uncomfortable to hold a Switch for half the time I could hold a Gamepad for. Also, where are Switch themes Nintendo?
The Switch feels so lacking in character compared to 3DS and Wii U. I miss when you’d turn the console on and a crowd would rush towards the screen, seeing all the drawings from Miiverse, and the fact the menu a had music still. Switch is just a stale grey or white background with nothing except some clicking sounds. Also folders being stuck in the library tab only compared to just being in the menu like both the previously mentioned systems.
As a 3DS and a Wii U owner of my own I highly disagree with you, Even though the switch doesn't have any themes or personality, it's still a good console. But I know for an absolute fact that not everything was beautiful and pretty during the 3ds and the Wii U era. I'm saying this as a 3DS and a Wii U owner of my own and I'm not nostalgia blind
The thing that annoys me the most in this generation are the fans. During the Wii U and 3ds era, there was this sense of community, every new release and reveal, was like we won the lottery. With the Switch, the fandom goes to entitled kids to crazy twiiter mob, comparing Nintendo to EA. But the thing that pisses me off the most is the constant begging for ports. I'm all in for remakes and remasters, i'm glad Sunshine and Galaxy got a HD treatment and i can't wait for Skyward Sword. But the fans has such double standard with them, Skyward Sword HD getting backlash because of price clearly is because is Skyward Sword! Any other Zelda game would be embraced for being 60 dollars. But SS haven't got a remaster yet, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess got their own, am i the only one that thinks is stupid to complain about a first time remaster but begging for a port of a remaster? Charging full price on a remaster is too much, but putting Twilight Princess in the fourth console in a roll is totally fine? I'm not defending SSHD being 60 dollars, but the game is only getting this much backlash because is a Zelda game that a lot of people didn''t liked because of motion controls. People crying about not having any work put on it, are the same complains made towards TPHD until release. Every remaster and remake on the Wii U and 3DS were full price and nobody complained. Every Wii U port were full price, having new stuff or not, nobody complained. Prior Nintendo consoles had backwards compatibility and nobody cared, but Switch not having every game ever released is an offense to humanity? And were to even begin with how toxic and disgustting the Smash community has became. I think the Switch is a damn fine console but the fact the fans keeping begging for Wii U ports, makes the Switch library be filled with ports instead of original games. I'm all in to bring old games back but there's no need to port everything, if you miss it the first time, the second time, it's on you... I don't agree with you about 2020 at all. I prefer getting almost no games that are playable and fun, rather than a broken mess like Cyberpunk. Clearly the pandemic hit not only Nintendo but everybody, it's june and almost nothing big got released in any plataform.
I definitely agree this. I'd say the community is a lot more toxic just because it's a lot larger. The pandemic probably doesn't help either. The whole port thing is a huge pet peeve of mine too. I understand why people want ports on Switch, but I also have to question why it's always such a huge deal. I mean, if people really want to play these games, they can. They already exist (even if you have to pirate it). I swear people treat ports as if they are brand new games. Somehow Zelda's 35th annivesary is awful because we're not getting half assed $60 ports of already existing remasters of 15-20 year old games. But a brand new remaster (while being overpriced I'll admit) is a problem? I never remember people getting this angry about WW/TPHD. Wii U ports are apparently fine being $60, but Metroid Dread isn't?? I hate the double standards, not that I'm defending the prices. The 2020 was more of a rebuttal point. I'm totally fine with getting less games, but there was no transparency from Nintendo last year. We knew nothing they were working on in 2019/early 2020 and the last direct we had for about 1.5 years announced pretty much nothing. It was hard to care for Nintendo in comparison to Sony/Microsoft imo
I have to disagree, what bugs me most about the switch area is the lack of people who feel like their entitled to quality games, people seem to act like Nintendo is some small studio that’s allowed to charge $60 for cheap games, Nintendo is legitimately as bad as EA at this point, the only difference being game quality, they’re just as greedy and unethical as EA, people need to wisen up and realize they’re being ripped off when they get shoved 2 Pokémon games in their face that are worse than the last 2 for %30 more each +dlc, breath of the wild 2 isn’t gonna make up for their hate of their fan base or how mediocre new horizons or odyssey are, until people stop mindlessly buying almost every game they release they’re gonna keep being this way. In summary: feeling you are entitled to games being good at the price point nintendo asks is not a bad thing, start being more critical or Nintendo is only gonna get worse.
I mean just saying. People are getting mad because Nintendo never has a sale on games. Especially when this is just a port. It should be cheaper because it’s not a new one, but instead a port. And we aren’t entitled, we have opinions. Nintendo with Mario 3D super stars basically said “If you cant buy it now, you cant buy it later” they shouldn’t have a limited time game. For anything that’s limited time. It’s should be clothing or food. Not games. Especially when everyone wanted these games. When realistically when those games were released, all combined I could find them cheaper. So if anything you are entitled.
My gut tells me that the pandemic didn't have much to do with the buggy mess Cyberpunk 2077 turned out to be, also, no, Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD released on the Wii U at $39.99 which is $20.00 less than a full price 8th gen game which costs $59.99. Edit: Scratch that last point, my memory was failing me.
@@WumbleWasp It's becoming increasingly difficult for people to get a hold of older games and their remasters, ports, etc. and not everyone wants to resort to piracy or emulation if they don't have to, wouldn't you rather get to buy Ocarina of Time on the Switch eShop for $5 to $10 instead of emulating it on your PC, I definitely would, it also helps that the Switch can easily run these 5th, 6th, and 7th gen games at higher frame rates, higher resolutions, and faster loading times as well as the fact that the games that were once only playable at hope (unless they're emulated) become playable on the go as well which is a huge plus. Also, I'm not saying that ports are better than new games, but I do think that ports are the only way to play older games in long running series for people like me who haven't had a new Nintendo console in almost 2 decades and don't have a way to play these older games besides emulation, and not everyone can run Wii emulators either. Although ports are a good solution, they can't compare to the sheer quantity of the Virtual Consoles, if Nintendo brought those back then it'd instantly solve most of this issue, you might not get to own a cartridge with Twilight Princess HD but you could just download it for $25 off the Virtual Console.
The Wii U was backwards compatible with Wii and wii discs. Meaning you can still use Wii stuff. And on my 3ds I can use the ds library. And on Wii I can use GameCube discs and I can use GameCube controllers to. The switch doesn’t have that and uses cartridges that are small and get lost. I thought discs were more powerfull. But features don’t exist and I don’t like the switch
I completely agree with this opinion and that’s coming from somebody who started the love of video games on an Atari 2600, so I’ve played multiple generations of consoles. I’ll take my 3ds with me on a trip over the switch any day in 2022. RIP Iwata, miss that guy
I love the wii u more than the switch, it doesnt matter about power or moderness, the wii u was the last nintendo console that had so much personality and love put into it, even if it failed. Im sorry but without Iwata, Nintendo has become a hollow and depressing shell of its former self
This video perfectly encapsulates my feelings between the 3DS/Wii U and Switch Era. Something extra to say about those old directs, they had many employees in the skits and interviews and such, which must have been nice.
Great video man. My main issue with this era is that Nintendo has just become more scummy and lazy with several things. Granted, they have done their fair share of crappy decisions in the Wii U/3DS era and even before that. However this just feels like a whole new level now, honestly at EA levels in some cases. Limited releases, piss poor paid online, full priced ports, lack of game preservation, the switch's boring and uncharismatic look, faulty hardware, and denial of real issues (e.g. Joycon Drift). I really don't dislike the switch as we've had some great games, especially in 2017. However it just has so many flaws caused mainly by Nintendo's ego and mindset that they can just get away with anything now as it's selling like hotcakes. I have some hope that they'll pick up the pace at some point as they have some exciting titles in the pipeline even if development of Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 do look somewhat worrying. Although it'll take more than just original games to fix their ways. You addressed your points well and made some good comparisons. Earned yourself a sub.
I love my switch, but I agree with a lot of what you said! Specifically how soulless it feels. I wasn’t able to get a 3DS back when I was in high school but EVERYONE had one, the music and the charm it gave off just made me want one so I could just put some headphones in and browse the store! and same with the “Wii U” I definitely prefer my switch but damn man, the Wii U had all these nice little features to browse and the charm as well. I really enjoyed your video! Great stuff.
The Wii U didn’t sold well due to poor marketing and people not being curious enough to try the Gamepad but it was much better than the Switch for a lot of reasons. As stated in this video, there were more original first party titles on the Wii U than on the Switch because the majority of the interesting Switch games that released were ports of Wii U games. Also, for the few games that actually were original, a good chunk of them were disappointing or bad. For example, Kirby Star Allies is a way too easy, unfinished and short game with little to no content. Pokémon Sword and Shield are reskinned 3DS games that manages to be worse than those. 1-2-Switch is literally the worst tech demo I have ever played which is a shame because Wii Sports and Nintendo Land were great games. The Wii U’s superiority over the Switch doesn’t stop there either, it was a bigger gap in terms of graphics quality with the HD for the first time on a Nintendo Console, the controller was much more comfortable to use than the Switch’s one, the Gamepad didn’t had drift, the Wii U had Miiverse as a social media, the Wii U had Netflix, Crunchyroll, UA-cam and an internet browser, it had virtual console and contrarily to the Switch to Wii U gimmick had potential to offer new gameplay experiences. If we factor the 3DS into this then the Switch is even more of a joke.
PlayStation is pretty much in a similar situation Back during the ps3 era, especially 2010, we had pretty unique games, but as time went on with the ps4's later lifespan and the ps5, it feels like the only games available are rpg's
I mean, yeah definitely. I feel like Nintendo's improved since this video, but Playstation has been in much worse state, they're a husk of their former selves. They release like 1 worthwhile game a year now. I wouldn't even call them RPGs though, at best, games with RPG mechanics or light RPGs.
The Switch doubling as both a home console and a handheld is both genius from a consumer perspective, but is likewise its fatal flaw. Nintendo is a game company first and foremost, so historically, their roof has been propped up by two pillars: console and handheld. Ever since the Game Boy and N64, these two pillars have had a trademark synergy that made Nintendo unique, both in the variety of games they delivered and their release schedule. I don't want to get too into it here, because there's too many figures to acknowledge, but by putting all of their eggs in one basket, Nintendo has gotten a bigger payoff at the expense of losing identity, something that with each iteration has only been improving, to where the DS and Wii families feel like two sides to the same coin, both as essential as the other. Their brand new releases, while usually excellent and of a high quality, tend to teeter between taking advantage of the Switch's hardware, or stepping back and feeling like a glorified 3DS or Wii game, making the first-party lineup feel like it has less identity compared to its predecessors.
@@joshualaw5972 you can still hunt one down on ebay. Apart from mario odyssey and botw when i had the switch, i still played my wiiu more. Even now, i still will play n64 games like ocarina of time, wave race, etc. I still have galaxy one and two which for me are still better than odyssey. Finally have gba games, other wii games (metroid prime trilogy) snes games etc. It really was nintendos best console. Buy one quick before nintendo shut down the online service one day
People have been asking for themes and music in the e-shop. Have you used either one of those? I think it would bring the Switch to its knees. I’ve never seen a video game OS be so sluggish in my life.
I can agree due to the backwards compatibility with the virtual console titles on both the Wii U and 3DS. Nintendo seemed to care more about game preservation during this time which was amazing. With the switch, they only have a handful of older titles you can play, but you can't buy them individually like with the Wii U, they made it subscription based - which is a horrible move. I love my switch, but the lack of virtual console titles is lame imo
I think I mostly agree with this video. But there is one line that basically explained the whole video, “For Wii U owners these don’t offer much anything” considering there are basically no original Wii U owners, I think Nintendo is making a calculated decision. Considering the amazing titles that came out for Wii U, they just want people to experience these games for the first time.
If that's about ports, I do agree. Their pricing is questionable though. I think that problem is an umbrella across a lot of their games though, not just rereleases, but I will admit that things have improved since this video came out.
Play your Wii U and 3ds! Hi all! If you love the Wii U and 3ds please PLAY them daily or at least weekly because your play data is still given to Nintendo. We all were and are a part of something special. Thank you all! You rock! ^^
Returning to this video after Nintendo just killed there older systems makes this video so much sadder to me. The Nintendo switch is just terrible. I can’t even beat around the bush. The hardware hasn’t been improved at all, aka joycon drift, not to mention everything else I’ve heard about it. The charm of the systems is gone and now the switch feels like an Xbox. Like when you open a 3ds or Wii U you get absorbed into the environment. Maybe you will even mess around with the 3ds sound or face raiders. On the Wii U you might even go chat in miiverse. The Wii U and 3ds felt more like Nintendo. The charming robot in Internet settings and the pikmin moving your data. The eshop on the switch is terrible. It lags to hell, looks like absolute S*it, and has no music. The shop on switch is the last place you wanna be. The games on switch are also 60 dollars and rarely ever drop in price. Not to mention having to pay for online now and the death of virtual console. And let’s not even talk about the 30 fps curse…I love Kirby and the forgotten land but seeing the choppy enemies from faraway is so bad…some games just look worse on switch… not to mention Nintendo started using the finish it later approach which has ruined several games. Not to mention Pokémon has entered a dark age…we have barely gotten anything besides sequels…we haven’t even gotten a new ip which is understandable but the Wii U introduced splatoon which was a huge hit and Nintendo didn’t even try here. Overall the Nintendo switch barely feels like a Nintendo console and some of the charm they used to have is gone. It makes me sad seeing them so anti consumer nowadays…Nintendo has become a husk of what they once were.
I actually remember when I got my first 3ds, it felt like a door to a new world opened in front of me. I’ve had many great memories with it and don’t get me wrong, when the switch came out, I was super excited for it but my excitement lasted until 2018, then it just flew away . Years later, in 2024, I have more fun playing old Nintendo games rather than newer games. My favourite franchise Pokémon, was murdered in my opinion, it was great tillgen 7, I remember each trailer of new Pokémon games, felt like a privilege, but Pokemon on the switch, didn’t give the same excitement
Honestly, a year into the switch, I got tired of the hybrid feature, the handheld/console modes, I wish they would've just stuck with the gamepad because of all the possibilities with it.
Great video, WumbleWasp! I think your points are quite solid ones as to why the Wii U and 3DS together arguably have more original titles than the Switch. I am one of those Nintendo fans who is really hungry for some actual new games, with original and innovative ideas. I am especially waiting for Mario Kart 9, for at least seven years at this point! But I like some of Nintendo's other franchises as well, such as Yoshi, Pokémon and Castlevania (the latter of which is not really a holy Nintendo-made series, but you get the point).
Not to mention that theres so many Wii U ports on the Switch, its their only excuse for being lazy, but yet with many ports on the 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo were still making more 1st party titles, even 2016 had more 1st party games than 2020. You'd expect the Switch to be the ultimate Nintendo console since they're giving their full focus on the Switch, but no, they prove to be lazier than they were with the 3DS and Wii U.
13:57 I feel like the lack of features is a result of Nintendo saving some money and effort or they thought (but they were wrong) that the failure of the Wii U was caused by those features. Like, maybe Nintendo thought part of the reason of its failure was that people didn't like these features anymore or something. Not that I agree. Yes, some things can come over a little "childish" I guess, but meh, it is the kind of stuff that makes it all more personal and charming to me and many others, and it's what used to make Nintendo unique.
@@iLoveBread260 I'll personally stick to emulating their new stuff and use their older consoles and pc for my main gaming experiences thanks! Nintendo doesn't care about their customers and I don't care about them :)
I’ve always seen it this way: the switch was launched at a point where the mainstream had seem to given up no Nintendo, the Wii U went so unnoticed that people still thought the Wii was their last console, meanwhile Nintendo did pour heart into the games and apps like you mentioned, bankruptcy was even in the talks and out of nowhere they release a versatile trendy console, but Nintendo used it as a financial recovery more than a love project and it show, the switch is what the Wii U needed to be marketing wise but with cheap corners cut, still very fun to play but lacking soul in its menus and lack of retro library, I feel like the switch was an extension of their plans with the Wii U and hopefully the next console will be an actual triumphant return for us gamers with a higher quality product and Nintendo actually caring again since they bounced back financially (which is their priority)
I loved this video the wii u was my favourite console as I got to play all my wii games and loads of new wii u games!!! I miss the days when wii u was new and exciting, thanks for making this great video
I completely agree. The Wii U Era just had so much character to it. The switch UI sucks, and the eshop sucks, lack of virtual console, etc. I’m hoping the next console will rectify some issues. I really think a lot of us took the Wii U era for granted. The console itself wasn’t the best but it was still fun. The Switch started off great but slowly it’s becoming more outdated.
Lack of 3rd party support is why I only buy every other Nintendo console and I try to get something that is backwards compatible. Looking forward to getting the Switch 2.0 and backlogging all the original Switch games.
Another point to support your argument is amiibo support. Before 2017, amiibo support was more varied, whether they give you cosmetics or extra item, or even using them as an AI player or game piece for Mario Party.
I agree with you 100% except for implying that Animal Crossing got an insubstansial sequel. Love or hate it that game was a huge overhaul to town customisation and the overall direction/objectives as a result. It isnt perfect but its one of the few things I think is truly unique for the Switch atm and could make it “worthwhile” (as a bullet point). Still I agree and I also feel the Wii U/Switch took a lot more risks. I think the Switch is really boring despite a strong start, and Nintendo haven’t done many huge positive shakeups this gen. They had some misses last gen, but it was exciting and fresh overall, and they had a lot more output. Even when you look at them taking the risk of something like a Metroid Prime sequel or Dread or something… is there something as unexpected and risky as Kid Icarus Uprising, or have you seen surprising new changes like Sakurai trying to change and cater to competitive. Last gen also had the rise of indies which is more of a timing thing but still it falls within that era. The only super risky games I can think are PLA which was a gem in the rough gen and NH which every AC fan has their own take on and BoTW but it hardly counts because its really a Wii U era game that got delayed super hard, and yes I’m saying Odyssey was a very safe game too, and the BoTW sequel looks VERY safe. I also want to say with their non-“premier” titles they seem to have much less care in them for the most part not only with the stupid update model but like none of them live up to Tropical Freeze or feel really inspired or ambitious and the 3DS and Wii U just had more high quality first-party titles overall imo. There are still good ones like Dread and stuff but a lot just fell to the wayside, and you no longer get random fun things like Pushmo/Pullblox, Dillon, etc. out of Ninty. On top of all this the addition of paid online which sucks and Nintendo’s netcode (or Wi-Fi chip or WHATEVER) STILL sucks after two gens. I’m probably out on all consoles next gen, I had overwhelmingly switched to PC anyway but if they keep playing it this safe with the software that will solidify it. Really boring library, lack of cool events, and the era overall has little personality and mostly feels like they’re just presenting sterile nostalgic pieces of their past. I know it’s good for them as a company after what a mess the Wii U was but as a consumer it turns me right off. Man, I loved the Wii U and especially the 3DS to the point I went to pre-release demos for the console, I kept up with every little thing in excitement, I liked the community more and the events like directs SLAPPED, and the Switch just has NO magic to it.
As much as I like the Switch, it is simply not as portable as the 3DS/PSP/Vita. I usually just play the switch on the couch at home. I miss the pocket sized handhelds.
@@quangamershyguyyz7166 Pretty much isn't enough though. I'm not walking around with a Switch light in my pocket. It should have been the size of the original 3DS. I can only dream.
The only Trick and Tool that Nintendo did to make the Switch appear better than the 3DS and WiiU: SMART AND CUNNING MARKETING STRATEGIES. Plain and Simple.
Switch era is lazy IMHO. There are many missing features on the Switch compared to the previous consoles. Even after these years, no increase in performance; but we got an OLED screen, which the PSVita had a decade before. Not trying to hate on the Switch, I have both Switch and Switch Lite, but it doesn't give me that same special feeling as my WiiU/3DS or even my Wii/DS.
The joy cons are terrible, the thumb caps come off way too easily, my kids switches dont even have them on anymore because they keep falling off. A Nintendo console that can't stand up to the usage of kids is a problem.
The Mario era of the switch has been bad. Nintendo has been acting dumb when it comes to developing Mario games. The whole switch era. We should have gotten a Mario Kart 9 instead of 8 Deluxe, an actual new NSMB game instead of U deluxe, instead of a port of 3D World, Bowser's Fury could have been it's own entire game all together. It could have been called Super Mario 3D Island. Lakelap Cat already has a Island themed aesthetic so it would fit. And then we should have gotten an Odyssey 2. Also Super Mario Party should have been called Mario Party 11. A lot of the Mario games on switch were rushed. Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf Superrush, and even Super Mario Party were all unfinished when they came out. Mario 3D All stars doesn't have Mario Galaxy 2. We're getting a Mario Kart 8 booster pass, but we should have gotten it a lot sooner. They even gave 3D All stars, and Mario 35 a limited release date. They killed off those Mario games for no reason.
Yeah I agree. It's weird tbh. All the spin off games are crap besides Mario Party Superstars (which is just a remake anyway lmao). And there's not that many games otherwise. No RPGS (not counting kingdom battle because it's ubi). No Mario Kart. No 2D games, and a minimum of 5+ years between 3D games which is unprecedented for the series. Mario fans had it a lot better with the 3DS + Wii U imo.
@@guyfierimtwi Exactly! It's why so many people bash the Wii U because no one actually owned it to experience it first hand. I'm glad we're on the same page here.
@@WumbleWasp Well, the marketing can be attributed to that because the way they ended being a "kiddie" console trargeted toward casuals. People didn't want nintendo targeting the causal crowd and that's why so many more people bought the switch. As for Wii U ports, unless they have sufficent new content, should be $40.
Awesome video bro just watching today! Recently been following the Wii U to the point where I actually SOLD my Switch OLED in order to buy a Wii U in 2023! It was the only console I never owned. Same with my recently acquired New 2DS XL, 3DS and 3DS XL. Basically in my opinion they do way more than the Switch currently does aka themes to name a few. More importantly I smile more as a 42 year old man playing these older consoles than the next gen stuff and that's pretty sad to admit. My Nintendo Wii U Deluxe Black Edition plus Pro Controller and Cable with the 9 best games collection cost in total £191.39 all in for EVERYTHING!!! Sooooooooo cheap!! BARGAIN!! Only LEGIT console i've never owned before!!! Nintendo Wii U Deluxe Black Edition RRP when first released JUST for the console was £278.06!!! 😱😳 Even setting the Wii U up was more exciting than the Switch or any other Nintendo console and certainly my Series X and PS5!! The Wii U slating which CLEARLY turned out to be UTTER NONSENSE in my opinion having now got one myself. It's like the Rocky movies and more so an example of the current world problem of "The Matrix" as Andrew Tate would say and we are all TOLD WHAT TO LIKE AND NOT LIKE and also WHAT WE SHOULD FOLLOW just like sheep. I love a great underdog story. The Wii U is EXACTLY THAT! Go figure everyone 😱🤷🏻♂️Get one for YOURSELF and use YOUR OWN freedom of thoughts on it👍🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wii vs. Switch Wii has better controllers than the Switch. Wii has music for its different channels, the Switch has no music at all. Wii (and WiiU, and 3DS) had free online, and even the Switch at one point, but now, the Switch doesn’t. Wii has 3 languages to choose from per unit, the Switch has more per unit. Wii has more innovation than Switch, turning the Wii into an iconic console. (Where do you think my profile picture came from?) Wii (and WiiU, and 3DS, apparently) had more retro games in its online shop than the Switch currently does (as of March 29, 2022). Wii has slightly worse graphics (and resolution) than the Switch, which is understandable. (It isn’t saying much, since great-looking Wii games exist) Is the Wii a better console, or is it the Switch that’s the better console?
I still would prefer if the brought back the DS and then had a seperate console like the wii U. Because tbh nothing will ever replace the feel of playing Pokémon on the DS. And the use of something that’s exclusively a home console Nintendo could focus of making it a more PlayStation or Xbox tear console
I agree. Been gaming on Nintendo since the early 1980's. Wasn't interest in the Wii. Wanted to get the Wii U but never got round to it. Finally got a Wii U recently, and it is everything I knew it was. Having a blast. I like the system, gamepad and console, and the tech it had. I like the design of the console and gamepad too. Although, they should of used harder plastic, as it scratches too easily. The Switch was/is a downgrade in my eyes. I would love a Wii U updated with current tech and updated motionplus controller etc, oh no, I'm dreaming at the moment. Nintendo will not do that of course, the Switch is so much cheaper to manufacture. I wouldn't be surprised if the profit per unit ratio of the Switch is double than that of the Wii U. Bring back the pre-Switch Nintendo please!
On top of Iwata and Regi being major personalities to watch, I think Wii U's lack of 3rd party support forced nintendo to make their own games real good
I still haven't got a switch. Maybe one day, but most the good games are from the Wii U, which I already have. And there's a bunch of 3DS games I still haven't beat. Even the Switch exclusives I would want aren't too different from what's already available. Another Smash Bros, another Animal Crossing, more Pokemon...
@@quangamershyguyyz7166 the switch experiences lags in its ui and eshop. It feels cheaper then me. But I guess the Wii U still has problems. I just feel that the switch was rushed out the door
I own the switch now and it’s no way near as enjoyable as my Wii U and 3ds. I still play the Wii U and 3ds yes! And they feel like Nintendo consoles. It’s the charm and personality for me
This list is pretty old now, but I disagree with the reasoning that wii u ports shouldn't be counted as your argument is basically 'with the merge between handheld and home teams they should have more capacity to work on original items'. But with the switch they had to go to an entirely new cpu architecture and moved from AMD/ATI to Nvidia graphics library. That means substancial effort needed to be made in tooling and engine work. Porting something over is almost like starting completely from scratch. Its worth noting that the wii u architecture is not that different from the wii and gamecube's built on the same IMB power pc structure. Like you get easy backwards compatibilty from ps4 to ps5 and xbone to series. But the 360 and ps3 era is also a significant challenge due to cpu architecture changes. Another argument is its totally worth Nintendos time to rerelease wii u games, since the target audience grows from 13 mil to 120+ mil people
Right. So what you're saying is that instead of making brand new games, Nintendo's opted into using the a comparable amount of resources and effort into porting older games. Which is somehow a good thing?
@@WumbleWasp Oh I actually thought you would find that interesting rather than addressing it in that tone. Yes 100% its a good thing. Speaking as a Developer myself. They have workable solutions that they can replicate, on a totally new hardware architecture. If they had to work entirely from scratch the engine and tooling work would take much much longer, would be much more buggy and we'd get even less games overall. Secondly you have 10 times the audience on switch vs wii u, so the vast majority of the people will experience the difinitive edition of the game, on the go even if they want to.
@@CeasiusC not to come off as dismissive but I don't see how this has anything to do with my video. It's not that I'm against ports, it's just that why should I/other Wii U owners care? I already played these games when they came out.
@@WumbleWasp And I think that's fair, it might feel a bit dissapointing if you've been a wii u owner for a long time. I bought my brothers' before the eshop closes and I love it. Don't get me wrong, I think the numbers in your video was very interesting, but I would have loved to see how much it would differ if you included the ports as well. All I'm saying is Nintendo's choices are sometimes baffling, but from a technical challenge of what they had to do this generation it makes sense that they brought out so many ports. Even though that means some of their customers are left a bit bored. I'd love to discuss this more cause it's genuinely a great interest of mine, just don't want to bore you to tears. If I may make a recommendation, another Aussie made a great video. Check out Green Ham Gaming's 'how powerful is the Wii U' or something in that line. Edit: and to answer your question directly, what does this have to do with your video. You had an open ended question as to why didn't we see similar amount of original releases when the dev teams were combined? The answer is obv technical challenges, which made ports a good idea in almost every sense, but it's also more work than porting something over to the same architecture.

@@tom-r3zYeah, but he's completely wrong. And the 140 million Switch owner agree with me.
I can't believe the Switch doesn't have better versions of streetpass and miiverse, it's crazy how they just stripped away all personality from the system compared to 3ds and WiiU.
That's because of Satoru Iwata. He was the heart and soul of Nintendo. Without him Nintendo is not the same unfortunately 😔

Switch still has a solid lineup but I agree both the 3DS and Wii U are better on almost every level.
A combination of factors made the wii u/3ds era more special to me:
1-The first HD debuts of nintendo IPs, and their first portable games with 128 bit quality graphics.
2- The systems launched in the middle of the reboot era, with familiar faces like kid icarus, pikmin, luigi' mansion and starfox returning, aside from all the stuff they were bringing back from their classic era
3-It was the first era where social media played a huge roll. The nintendo directs and rise of nintendo fan youtubers created a feeling of community that helped make each major release an event!
"and their first portable games with 128 bit quality graphics."
In 640x200.

They worked with the blue ocean strategy and tried to do things that other companies didn't (in a positive way)
Today there are games like Pokemon Legend Arceus.

Switch Sports could’ve been better, had it not been for the fanbase.

Strongly disagree with all of this. The Switch is way better than the Wii U.
@@raskolnikov6443 as a Wii U owner of my own I agree with you, The switch Lord's better than the Wii U.
I'm not nostalgia blind unlike those people
I agree with you on so many points, especially when you talk about the human aspect of the company under Iwata.
Id rather take my 3ds around with me anyway. More portable i actually love the 3D. Not a gimmick to me
The Switch feels so lacking in character compared to 3DS and Wii U.
I like both eras but life gets harder every year.
I like Wii U/3ds more tho

This video perfectly encapsulates my feelings between the 3DS/Wii U and Switch Era.
Something extra to say about those old directs, they had many employees in the skits and interviews and such, which must have been nice.
I know! That's the charm of Nintendo magic.
Fans towards The wii u: Oh look at that kiddie thing, ha ha.
Fans towards the switch: Nintendo is awesome.
This video: 100% flip
The 3DS/WiiU era was the type of era that makes you feel like a child again, while the switch doesn’t feel as welcoming like it was in 2017 :/
I love my switch, but I agree with a lot of what you said!
If we factor the 3DS into this then the Switch is even more of a joke.
good video man i also felt like nintendo feels a bit like it's slowly losing what made it great
Wii U and 3DS were like brothers, they worked together
PlayStation is pretty much in a similar situation
Back during the ps3 era, especially 2010, we had pretty unique games, but as time went on with the ps4's later lifespan and the ps5, it feels like the only games available are rpg's
This is an absolutely great video! You showed a lot of facts and numbers, had good edits and spoke well. Super underrated.
The Wii U/3DS era will always be my favourite years as a Nintendo fan.

Many people hated the gimmick.

The wii u was underrated ash. In MY opinión Wii u>Switch
Now we have 2023 and nothing changed, the output of Nintendo is ABYSMAL!
2024
Personally I think if you mod your wii u and 3ds its definitrly worthwhile especially because of how much easier they are to mod over the switch
Way better off getting a steam deck over a switch
The 3ds and wii u had way more character, with the miiverse and actual theming
I would much rather straight up purchase virtual console titles over paying a subscription.
Don't give up on Nintendo this early, they still have the Switch 2 up their sleeves
@@iLoveBread260 I'll personally stick to emulating their new stuff and use their older consoles and pc for my main gaming experiences thanks! Nintendo doesn't care about their customers and I don't care about them :)
I like both the switch and 3Ds/Wii U area
Same here, I'm basically all three
I’ve always seen it this way: the switch was launched at a point where the mainstream had seem to given up no Nintendo, the Wii U went so unnoticed that people still thought the Wii was their last console, meanwhile Nintendo did pour heart into the games and apps like you mentioned, bankruptcy was even in the talks and out of nowhere they release a versatile trendy console, but Nintendo used it as a financial recovery more than a love project and it show, the switch is what the Wii U needed to be marketing wise but with cheap corners cut, still very fun to play but lacking soul in its menus and lack of retro library, I feel like the switch was an extension of their plans with the Wii U and hopefully the next console will be an actual triumphant return for us gamers with a higher quality product and Nintendo actually caring again since they bounced back financially (which is their priority)
I loved this video the wii u was my favourite console as I got to play all my wii games and loads of new wii u games!!! I miss the days when wii u was new and exciting, thanks for making this great video
I still have a 3ds and still get games for it just because I like it more. And this is coming from a guy who also owns a Nintendo switch.
Why can Nintendo get back like the Wii/Wii U DS/3DS
I think the wiiu and 3ds era is mainly better because of the happy vibe and nostalgia for a good handful of gen z people

The switch era is not lazy at all
@@maplemiles3381 no it totally is
Nintendo should port Splatoon 3 / 2 to Wii U.
Yeah, I feel like the Wii U and DS era had a lot more charm and more fun
I am 100% with ya on this dude
@@WumbleWasp Yep definitely.
@@WumbleWasp Because only 1/10 of switch onwers actually bought a wii u.
Even setting the Wii U up was more exciting than the Switch or any other Nintendo console and certainly my Series X and PS5!!
Go figure everyone 😱🤷🏻♂️Get one for YOURSELF and use YOUR OWN freedom of thoughts on it👍🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wii vs. Switch
Wii has better controllers than the Switch.
(Where do you think my profile picture came from?)
Wii (and WiiU, and 3DS, apparently) had more retro games in its online shop than the Switch currently does (as of March 29, 2022).
Wii has slightly worse graphics (and resolution) than the Switch, which is understandable. (It isn’t saying much, since great-looking Wii games exist)
Is the Wii a better console, or is it the Switch that’s the better console?
Thank you for making this
I still would prefer if the brought back the DS and then had a seperate console like the wii U. Because tbh nothing will ever replace the feel of playing Pokémon on the DS. And the use of something that’s exclusively a home console Nintendo could focus of making it a more PlayStation or Xbox tear console
This is why I stopped after Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon on the 3DS
I thought I was the only one who feel this way about Nintendo!
Nintendo will never stop selling the Switch, it’s just that good of a system.
@@quangamershyguyyz7166 I hope they soon stop the crappy Switch era.
On top of Iwata and Regi being major personalities to watch, I think Wii U's lack of 3rd party support forced nintendo to make their own games real good
It would be impossible for me to agree more
Average Switch fan VS. Average Wii U enjoyer
@Pau Molina G. fr. It’s a new generation of mind numbing tablet kids
Buy the switch and the wiiu ports ypu won't regret it
@@maplemiles3381 nah
@@maplemiles3381 Agreed
@@maplemiles3381 Wii U ports are trash!
I honestly miss the Wii and 3ds era however, I love my switch
glad Im not the only one that agrees, honestly the switch feels a lot more soulless and flawed than the wii u
the switch expereinced problems from the beginning and still does more often then it should. while the wii u gamepad and stuff works fine still :D
People keep saying the WIi U was a prototype of the switch and the switch is the finished version of the Wii U. But I think it’s the other eat around
@@b8conbear330 The Wii U feels a lot more flawed and works much less than the Switch to me.
@@quangamershyguyyz7166 the switch experiences lags in its ui and eshop. It feels cheaper then me. But I guess the Wii U still has problems. I just feel that the switch was rushed out the door
The switch was rushed because Nintendo needed money. When they are get their old power they will make better product as Switch sales multiplies
Switch doesn't have good games anymore. If you look at a top 10 best games for each year the list basically stays the same.
Metroid dread
You keep believing that.
@@quangamershyguyyz7166you keep believing the switch is good buddy 😁👍
I wouldn’t say it no longer has good games and the top 10 best switch game list stays the same each year we check it. Let’s not be so negative.
I miss street pass, and Pokemon games not having paid DLC.
I own the switch now and it’s no way near as enjoyable as my Wii U and 3ds. I still play the Wii U and 3ds yes! And they feel like Nintendo consoles. It’s the charm and personality for me
You nailed it brutha. Many reasons why I haven't pulled the trigger on buying the switch. My friends/ family are still tearing it up on my wii u.
Buy a switch
@@maplemiles3381 buy a wii u
Weirdly enough, I agree with you on the overall take, but disagree with most of your arguments
