Tom was influenced by Bob Dylan and The Beatles. He also got to play with Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison an Jeff Lynne of ELO in the group The Traveling Wilburys. Tom was a great story teller with his songs and it shows in his videos. Saw him in concert in 2002 and it was the best concert i have been to since 1976.
I love Tom Petty. So sad that he left us so soon. This is a great song. Yuppies were “young urban professionals”, often associated with corporate greed. Thanks Harri and Debbie 🌺✌️
Thanks for the pick Debbie, and the reaction Harri! I have always loved Tom Petty and this song is a favorite of mine. How can you beat that opening line? I miss him something bad. And speaking of the fun video and the brother-in-law, one of my brother's best friend's mother's actually bought him that blow up doll for Christmas one year. He too was challenged getting lucky.
Great song! Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were formed in 1976 & had a lot of great hits such as "American Girl", "Refugee", "The Waiting", "Learning To Fly", "Don't Do Me Like That", "Change Of Heart", "I Need To Know" etc. In 1989 Petty went solo & had quite a few hits such as "I Won't Back Down", "Runnin' Down A Dream", "Free Fallin'", "A Face In The Crowd" etc. He was also part of the supergroup "Travelling Willburys" in 1988.
Beatles are definitely an influence on Petty. Byrds, Dylan, and others. Jeff Lynn produced this. I think I hear him on the backing vocals (maybe). But the Beatles are definitely an inspiration for him - he said of his band ELO that he wanted to make records that took off from where the Beatles left off after Magical Mystery Tour.
Not much too say about TP & his brilliance, but was a surprise when MTV put him in the Music Video HOF!!!🙏🙏🙏 YOU watch his vids??? And you go ....Yeah!!!!👍🤘🙏🙏🙏
Hilarious song with great music. My favorite line is "now he's got nothin, head in the oven". In case anyone doesn't know, people used to attempt suicide by putting their head in a gas oven and turning on the gas without lighting it. A very tangential reference, but really funny in an absurd sense.
Love and miss Tom Petty ❤ he is one of a kind, love his voice and style. Also so cool and chill ❤
Tom Petty is one of the best.
I was lucky enough to see him live. Damn they were good! Tom Petty, the soundtrack to our lives !! RIP
Damn this song is terrific. Over 30 years later and I still can't help but smile when I hear it.

Songwriter(s) Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne....Producer(s) Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Mike Campbell 1990...
Tom Petty gets overlooked when people talk about great songwriters. I started thinking about his best song and I keep changing my mind

Debbie - I thoroughly enjoyed your submission from Tom Petty's songbook. Bravo to both you and Harri.
I subscribed to you because you seem to notice things that I might have missed! So thanks. I love Tom.
Tom Petty is the coolest guy to ever enter a room.
Always liked this song and the entire album
I'm pretty sure the term Yuppie was coined in America in the 80s, and made it's way to England

At the end, it be sounded like the song “wasn’t born to follow”.
I love Tom Petty, another talent gone too soon.
Yuppie refers to young urban professional. Nobody liked yuppies in the 80's.
When I was a kid I wanted to be a yuppy when I grew up.
Now that I'm nearly 50 I'm glad never became one.
That's former SNL cast member Charles Rocket. He famously used the F word on live TV, and was later fired from the show.
