My dad gave me a little piece of advice when I was young that sounded something like this. He told me that whenever you start a new job you're in a situation where you don't even know what you don't know. He told me to keep my mouth shut and to pay attention to everything. I should also periodically ask my supervisor what he felt I needed to work on. He said if I did that long enough I would move into the category of people that at least know what they don't know. He said I should be happy to be in that category because then I could confidently research and learn the things that I knew were important and relevant to my job performance. After watching this video I cannot be happier to have had my father in my life for 17 years. Sure he passed away when I was still a boy but he at least taught me how to be a man before he died. Love you dad, it's 2019 I'm 39 years old, and I still miss you every single day.
I don't know exactly why this sprang to mind, but in the middle of the Blue's Stanley Cup season they went with a rookie goaltender named Jordan Binnington. In an interview he said something like, "My plan is to keep my mouth shut and learn." He didn't strut around like a "know it all" prick. He ended up being phenomenal and cool as a cucumber.
Northern Lights I’ve come across several people who have taken one single college intro course, and they walk around like they know everything in that subject.
On a similar note, I find the most annoying people to be those that make fun of another person for not knowing something. They think that it's a person's own fault for not knowing something, when in fact a lot of the time it's impossible to learn something that you haven't even heard of. What you don't know can't hurt you, and can't be entered into Google because - again - you don't know it.
What is worse ,is that they don't want to know that they don't know . ..Actively choosing blissful ignorance 🤷♂️. . They will also accuse you as being a know it all . .I used to get upset by all of this
I don't want to know the truth! I'm happy thinking "my way!" This is my mother's logic and apparently many people in the US. Is ignorance really bliss?!
No. If that were true, no one would continue to learn anything for more than 3 weeks. There would be no experts. Experts might not be omniscients, but they will always know a crapload more than anyone else, why do you think they bothered to study a field for 5, 10, 20, 40 years, their whole life? They are smart people, if they thought it is not worth doing it, they would not have learned anything. Yours is an absurd conclusion. It sounds clever, but it's not solid logic. Say, when you eat a lot, do feel hungrier? Or when you get more money, do you feel poorer? Personally, the more I learn something, the more I feel that I know MORE, not less. It will never be 'all', but so what. I don't confuse 'a lot' with 'all'. A lot is a lot, The video is more about stupid people who DON'T know, and go 'I get it'. Not the ones who DO know.

Unfortunately, I know a lot of people who are mind boggling "confident". They NEVER admit to their mistakes, no accountability, and always play the "I'm always right" attitude. Being around them is like being around grown up children.
that's odd. i don't have that experience at all. i'm guessing you don't work in a professional environment. most of the folks where I work are afraid to say someone that's wrong and be known as giving bad information or data. that's a sure way to kill your rep. if you're not 100% sure say you'll look into it or give qualifiers to answers like "I believe," or give an outright confident rating to information, and agree to get back to the person. have your boss or colleagues in on the decision and work through things together. why would you ever fake confidence or information which might damage reputation? (i get that the effect says the incompetent doesn't even realize they are incompetent) maybe for a one-time sale, maybe. overall this effect is meaningless because the incompetents usually don't graduate with 4 year degrees in competitive fields or find themselves in professional jobs. they're weeded out and serve in non-professional jobs, struggling. the main benefit of this observation is for teaching and instruction skills. but I could be wrong on that, maybe it has more practical purposes -- self-reflection?

My dad gave me a little piece of advice when I was young that sounded something like this. He told me that whenever you start a new job you're in a situation where you don't even know what you don't know.
He told me to keep my mouth shut and to pay attention to everything. I should also periodically ask my supervisor what he felt I needed to work on. He said if I did that long enough I would move into the category of people that at least know what they don't know.
He said I should be happy to be in that category because then I could confidently research and learn the things that I knew were important and relevant to my job performance.

Say, when you eat a lot, do feel hungrier? Or when you get more money, do you feel poorer? Personally, the more I learn something, the more I feel that I know MORE, not less. When you know nothing, you have two choices: Work hard to learn or go into politics.
When you know nothing, you are at peace.
Or the media
My version: Those who can, do. Those who can't do either teach or criticise. Those who can't do, teach, or criticise become politicians.
...or join a church.
Third and more common choice: become a prolific contributor on Twitter
Does being informed about the dunning-kruger effect influence how people rate themselves at tasks? Like if you did a test of dunning-kruger reminded people vs a control group would they more accurately estimate their abilities?
@Francis Jeremiah That last line is a helpful observation. Would you know of any psychological analysis/measurement that does look at stupidity. Plus, I will be looking online. Thank you.
This scenario called Hawthrone Effect. And there are high chance that the result will different if the participants know they are part of dunning kruger experiment, but I'm not sure what kind of effects will occurs.

"Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance." - Confucius.
I like this one. It reminds me of a video i saw and the director Orson Welles's comment. "Ignorance. Sheer ignorance there's no confidence to equal it. It's only when you know something about a profession you're careful or timid. I thought you could do anything with a camera that the eye could do, or that the imagination could do." I heard it from "The biggest problem with Modern Films" @9:39 I will forever love this comment. This could be more targeted in a creative or passionate standpoint. learning from what you desire not dwelling in it. You have to believe 100% in your ability when challenged by a task. Same here. The more I learn the more I realize how much there is to know and even a lifetime of studying and learning will achieve, at best, a drop of understanding in the comparable oceans of the entirety of what there is to know. And then there are things that are, by their nature, impossible to be comprehended by humans. They are unknowable.
Saying, "I don't know", doesn't mean that you are stupid.
So true...how many times have I given instructions to someone shaking their head in acknowledgment only to receive the end result wrong because they are afraid to say "I don't understand"...
This is it, people always gotta know shit and chime in, but half the time they say the dumbest shit you ever heard with a straight face
Exactly, it shows self awareness, insight and the ability to recognise your own lack of knowledge. It's an ability that not enough people possess.

Daniel Juncos Too bad the singers fatally slurred the lyrics. I've always heard, "What a fool believes, he sees, the wise man has the power to wish it away...." as in, smarter people recognize their own biases and don't blindly trust the evidence of their senses.

The more you know, the more you realise there is a lot you don't know
Exactly. That's probably the basic idea of the dunning kruger effect. You realize this everywhere even in basic stuff. For example I usually think a subject is easy when I'm behind and leave it at last minute to catch up sometimes in college. When I start studying I then know I should've started catching up earlier :/ I still tend to do it for some reason

one of my lecturers constantly told me for 2 years that I was going to Fail the entire 2 year course... turns out she was secretly giving my coursework to one of her "favourites" and then acting like I hadn't handed in any coursework.. when I confronted her about it after finding out she denied it and tried getting me kicked out of the course... so I handed in really bad work for the rest of the course and then she told me that she "lost" all of my coursework during the last 2 weeks of college... luckily I was prepared for this and actually did really amazing work in secret and handed that in to our amazing 2nd lecturer who had it as evidence that I had been doing my work so that he could back me up if anything became of it... I spent the last 2 weeks making sure it was extra exceptional work.. that could only achieve the highest marks... I had the highest marks out of everybody on the course... I only found out at the time that she had been giving my coursework to somebody else because my GF at the time was asked to assist with organising everybody's coursework into Folders with labelled sections to mark the areas of the course.. because even though we were supposed to do it ourselves many people hadn't... anyway I decided to help my GF at the time tidy it all up.. and she spotted my work that she had seen me do at times in other peoples folders... so yeah.. my lecturer was corrupt and she cried to me asking me why the people on the course hated her and I told her straight it's because she keeps having favourites and neglecting everybody else... I told her straight up...

True. That's why it is a great step to move from "unconsciously incompetent" to "consciously incompetent". Only then can learning start. The main job of a teacher in my opinion is to show students how much they need to know, and then help them obtain that knowledge.
