Yeah, really aggressive track that was the first to not feature on an album. In fact, probably their only one. Definitely a different tone to their previous stuff, and not particularly like the upcoming 'Black and White ' album either.
5 Minutes" is a 1978 single by the band The Stranglers. The song is sung by bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel. It gives an account of a rape that occurred at a shared flat in London he lived in during 1977. The lyrics, which are sung both in English and French, convey Burnell's frustrations over finding the five men who committed the attack.
Thank you so much for playing . what in my opinion is one of the greatest punk records ever recorded, I know theres always been the argument they were never a punk band, and of course they are far more than that label, but when this first came out, it was like it was almost out of control the sheer aggression in JJ s voice , with the layering of sound, its such a great song, and of course the keyboards by Dave give it so much depth,
I heard JJ being interviewed by Jonnie Walker a few months ago and he said the song was more about wanting to speak to the perpetrators and hearing what they had to say than it was about vengeance. The milk had already been spilt - nothing could put it back in the bottle. Whilst it was a personal tragedy for all involved, what a tremendous piece of music emerged in the aftermath. One of the true all-time greats.
Classic early Stranglers, though it becomes quite disturbing when you look into what it's about. But I think thats why it works so well, the sheer venom with which JJ sings is incredible, definitely one straight out of his soul.
Ive always loved this song, as always excellent musical ability and it has an extraordinary air of tension, rage and yet, as you rightly pointed out, realisation that violance is not the answer, many thanks for your reaction
I can remember walking into the Barrowland when they used this as their intro and the place erupted into mayhem!. My God what a show,,,,,,,,,,,,they don't make 'em like this no more!.
Magic ferocious song - when the snare is hit and the whole band comes in it just sounds huge (loud)...fantastic production. True story as well. Break in- rape - JJ's friend.
While you're on the stranglers rabbit hole its worth checking out ' toiler on the sea' from the black and white album or Genetix from the raven album both superb tracks and burnels bass playing on genetix is a joy to behold 😁👍
Great band,......my introduction to them was when I won a ticket to see them in a small pub in Dalston, East London back in 1977!!!! I was just 16 then and had never been to Dalston!!!!! It wasn't a pretty town!!!,and the journey home late at night was.....er.....entertaining 😮.....but the band was amazing,I was hooked and been a fan ever since. I was grounded when my Dad found out where I'd been.......weren't allowed in pubs until we were 18........lol I was a rebel then😅
This song is about a girl/woman that JJ Burnel shared a flat with. One night when he was gigging, she was beaten and raped by three low life thugs. He blamed himself for not being home, which is why he sounds beyond angry, and threatens that he will find those guys and get his retribution.
i was there at the beginning Carlisle in 1977 , seen them well over 120 times , they were punk with a capitol P, JJ is one of the kings of Punk never compromised , even at 70 he has that menace , that very few have
And just too add one from outside the norm...killing joke are a band to explore 😁 the death and resurrection show is a tribal ,industrial festival of noise gem that'll have you putting on animal skins and dancing round a fire or at least nodding your heads in a good way 😁👍
Yeah they should have made it a five minute song, at least for an album cut. But 5 minutes long, back then, would have problems getting played on the radio. I can only think of two exceptions to that rule. Bohemian Rhapsody and Hey Jude.
5 minutes, along with Strange Little Girl, Who Wants The World, Were not taken from any of they're official studio albums ! Yes a 5 min version would have been better .
Faster tempo than I remember, if they slowed it down a bit it wouldn't lose anything, in fact I think a slower tempo would be more powerful, but it would become 5 minutes long.
What lyrics. "They came on a Saturday night. The killed the cat and they raped his wife. In their eyes there was fear and hate. And when they spoke, they spoke with knives".
I'll be honest, I've never much liked any of their songs with JJ Burnel on lead vocals instead of Hugh Cornwell - except for 'Go Buddy Go'! 😀 Even my teenage Son had been obsessed with that song for a while, about a year ago, recording numerous own 8-bit versions, too! 😄
One of the stranglers best lyrics are abit near the knuckle but never afraid to offend as it was punk .JJ Burnell on vocals and abit of French at end ad he is half French
This was a stand-alone single. The B-side, Rok It To The Moon, is also excellent.
Ta, I thought so.
Yeah, really aggressive track that was the first to not feature on an album. In fact, probably their only one. Definitely a different tone to their previous stuff, and not particularly like the upcoming 'Black and White ' album either.
This was a double A side
My introduction to the Stranglers back in '78 (?) . Incendiary song with a menacing video to match,...brilliant!
Incendiary...a very appropriate adjective.

This is the Stranglers at their best , tye early records were fantastic 👍

Great posting
When they first came out they were as much a punk band as anyone else. As far as most of their fans even today they are still a punk band

Yeah I hear you thought methinks the "conversation" may have helped resolve the milk issue! Actions have consequences...

A lot of their stuff was quite dark.
I always presumed it was based on the home invasion in A Clockwork Orange.
@@FFM0594 That's a thought.

The best version of this is live Xcerts
great song.. just fantastic... as mean and bruising as they come ... thanks.
Thank you for doing this, I always appreciate when you do a suggestion of mine, sorry that I missed it when you did it.
Great band 'The Stranglers'.
Thanks for this- waaaayyy back this was my intro to this band.
Saw the Stranglers way back in 79 / Manchester, and they opened their set with this. Great concert.

Absolute banger. If you like The Stranglers, you have excellent taste.
The song is about a rape that happened at flat JJ was living in.
And that Ant Man shirt is TERRIFIQUE!
One of my favorite Stranglers songs.
One of my favourite tracks from The Stranglers
One of my favourite Stranglers song , great lyrics too
had a couple of drinks listening to this, what an old codger i am
🤣🤣🤣 me too!
I don't think Jet Black had a bored look , l think he just had the hang dog look with menace , one of the best drummers of his time

Oh no, how horrible! 😯 Do you know if those thugs had ever been arrested?
@mightyboy1111 Unfortunately not!
@@CAdams6398 - Dang! That's a shame.
@mightyboy1111 In a way it wa a blessing in disguise, as JJ was a teacher and black belt in karate. He would have killed them all.
@@CAdams6398 - As the lyrics and his vocal delivery suggest too, yes! Gotta hit the slab now. May all have been well with you meanwhile, Christian! 😊👍
This is a song for a BIG set of speakers. P.S. LOLZ! He doesn't hate them, he just wants to find them and then kill them.
This would make a monk violent with revenge in his heart.
Probably my favourite Stranglers song
Love the Stranglers, what an codger am i
Wow! What a great track. You got to love The Stranglers. ;^)
It was the the girl it happened to that should have wanted justice ! I'm sorry for her !
I never knew if The Stranglers were punk or new wave. Either way, you've got to like them.
More "punk",if you accept any label about them. New wave to me was for people who were a little scared of punk but still wanted to be "edgey".

We did that one quite a while back.
