The maddest thing is the politician speaking after inhaling helium is based in reality. Sinn Fein statements on the News back then had to have a actor doing an obvious voiceover. For reasons.
No joke, last week the news in Britain was saying around 10% of people here are doing their own dentistry, Im thinking sales of fuji 9 must be going through the roof. (hat tip to Bob Mortimer)
This series was a one-off that aired 6 episodes in a month back in 94 and then disappeared. The man who wrote it and starred, Chris Morris, did a similiar series in 97 called Brass Eye, which was another parody of news and factual documentaries and was also brilliant and very funny. He did an episode on a new drug called CAKE, got a few celebs involved without really telling them it was all a piss-take and even got one Member of Parliament to ask a question about this made-up drug in parliament. Chris Morris was involved in writing for other very funny people, including Stewart Lee and Steve Coogan. Choose any episode from the Day Today or Brass Eye and you'll love it - as will we! Do the whole 12 episodes from both and we'll love you even more!
"The Day Today" came from Chris Morris's original radio series called "On The Hour" in '91-'92 - it was a great idea and surprising it had never really been done before then (there were plenty of newsreader parodies before, but not a whole news programme), but then the constant 24-hour rolling news broadcasts only really became a thing in the late 80s/early 80s as satellite technology improved.
The helium inhaling was because at that time the voices of the Sinn Fein representatives had to be voiced by an actor because the government refused to allow them to be broadcasted. Bonkers.
This was such a perfect satire of TV news genre conventions in structure and form that we actually studied it in school There’’s lots of contemporary references to British politics of the time that might not translate to the modern day. All of the clips of politicians were real clips taken from news footage and repurposed. There were also strict and slightly ridiculous broadcasting restrictions put upon Sinn Fein in Britain in the ‘90s.
I watched these years ago n still watch them now and again, his reprimanding of peter on air always has me howling and is still one of my favourite parts 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣❤❤
I recorded these on VHS when I was in my late teens. My friend rings me and says he's having a party because his parents went away on holiday. I take the cassette to the party. We're watching it and the friend who house it is, walks into the room. He thinks it's a real news report and that Noel Edmunds is involved in an armed siege with police!! Can't remember when realised it was all fake (might have been the exploding terrorist dog?) but he made it even funnier :)
Oh yes, finally someone has got round to doing this (anything Armando iannucci is involved in is pure gold) 😊😊 Before this there was a radio show called “On the hour” that’s worth checking out too
The Peter O'Hanraha-Hanrahan clips are comedy gold. They did a 9/11 sketch which is way funnier than it sounds. Peter is apparently in the Trade Centre discussing a deal minutes after the attack and doesn't mention it, when he finds out the attack happened, he admits he's not there and he'd overslept and was just pretending. Patrick Marber played the character, he wrote the 2004 film Closer.
Quite a good selection of clips but nowhere near the best and many cut short. Any show written and produced by Chris Morris and Armanda Iannucci was bound to be superb. That it also starred Steve Coogan and brought us Alan Partridge. And the rest of the cast are brilliant too. They spoiled us is in the 90s. Peter O-Hanraha-Hanrahan's special report from New York, Sep 11 2001 (audio only) is worth hearing.
This programme is the first time Alan Partridge was seen on TV, although the character was first on Radio 4's 'On the Hour' which was basically a radio version of this.
Stewart Lee wrote Alan Partridge scripts so is a co. Creator 😮 But everyone admitted Steve Coogan is the voice and is Alan Partridge it wouldn't work without him Lots of great British comics are working on this pioneering show ❤
A number of years ago I came across a Canadian radio show called This Was That. It was a news parody with made up stories . I remember they were always apologising for something, even when nothing had happened.
Btw, the segment about the leader of Sinn Féin inhaling helium is 100% true. Only they didn’t care to mention that it was specifically to undermine anything they had to say.
They would not be able to a show like that these days because the world has gone that crazy that people would not be able to tell spoof news from real news.
The presenter is the actor who played CEO Denholm Reynholm in IT Crowd (not sure if you already reacted to IT Crowd yet? - from the creators of Father Ted & Black Books?)
The thing is with the proliferation of news media, the absurd phythonesque stories aside, we know that this is just a tiny way across a line that some news outlets already walk.
You should of done this before I'm Alan Partridge, to get full perspective of the character. Day Today follows on from a radio show called On The Hour and continues with Knowing Me, Knowing You-with Alan Partridge, which was far funnier than I'm Alan Partridge. It was loosely based on another talk show host called Richard Madeley amongst others and features lots of the faces from Day Today. Chris Morris went on to do Brasseye (a euphemism for your butthole) which was a spoof docu-series, which was dark humour covering a different subject each episode. Then he made Jam, which is the most darkest and twisted comedy you'll find. Hope you watch them all, judging by what I've seen, you'll both love them!
ICYMI Chris Morris played Denholm Reynholm in IT Crowd. This 9-minute clip shows a bunch of shows the Father Ted writers worked on/with: ua-cam.com/video/b3cRXMZ5N-c/v-deo.html
❤😂Well, now you have some idea, what/how The US looks like To us, every Day! Sad thing is, it has not been funny for a long time now. And it's only getting worse. Great series, sadly not enough episodes/seasons.
Nice one guys👍loved this program, not sure if it was clips from brass eye? Anyway the way they mocked how sensational news is was funny as🤣cheers you two, take care✌️🍻
The Peter O'Hanraha-hanrahan segments are always gold 😂👌
Peter! You've lost the news!
"the dentist managed to escape on a nearby Yacht" 🤣🤣
The maddest thing is the politician speaking after inhaling helium is based in reality. Sinn Fein statements on the News back then had to have a actor doing an obvious voiceover. For reasons.
Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge) played the man they caught in the dentist section.
This was the first TV appearance of Alan Partridge too.
Thank God others remember this as well as me. One of the most influential comedies the UK has produced. So much talent 😊
No joke, last week the news in Britain was saying around 10% of people here are doing their own dentistry, Im thinking sales of fuji 9 must be going through the roof. (hat tip to Bob Mortimer)
The whole show is on UA-cam. You should definitely make it a series!

Brass eye 👍
I'm sure I remember seeing something were some people were tuning in and not realising it was a parody show and thinking it was a real news show.
@@swanchamp5136 Yes, it happened with the paedo episode and the Cake drug episode.

What? not allowing terrorist speak on tv?
'Fact me 'till I fart.' I forgot about that little gem.😂 Please do the series.
That was a magical moment - until then I'd assumed that the legend of Sue Lawley was limited to my school.
That is going to be my comment whenever I see someone in the comment section starting their post with "Fun fact" 😆😈
This was such a perfect satire of TV news genre conventions in structure and form that we actually studied it in school

This is probably the best British comedy series ever
I watched these years ago n still watch them now and again, his reprimanding of peter on air always has me howling and is still one of my favourite parts 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣❤❤

Armando has the Midas Touch. Even his USA Show: VEEP is my favourite USA show of all time and I am 69 in London..
This & Brass Eye on TV and On The Hour on radio are amazing.
Is that Denholm Reynholm reading the news?
😂🤣👍✌️
Holy shit, this still made cry with laughter and I've seen it dozens of times in the last 30 years.
YES!!!! Please do all 6. Then PLEASE do Brass Eye. Then, when you think you can handle it, it's time for the infamous JAM.
My God yes. No one ever does Jam, that would be a blast. So dark, weird, and genius. One of the greatest things ever recorded.
GOD - Blue Jam! A remix of a show designed to evoke an influenza virus.
Literally art in video format.
You're SUPPOSED to suffer it....
My favorite line from alan partridge is "twat! That was liquid football!
I have completely forgot about this genius mini-series. Brilliant.
The Peter O'Hanraha-Hanrahan clips are comedy gold. They did a 9/11 sketch which is way funnier than it sounds. Great post... my favorite was Alan Partridge commentating 't**t,that was liquid football!' . Keep 'em coming
Yay! Brasseye too. Also there is an Irish comedy "The Savage Eye - The Catholic Church". Amongst the best and bravest 7 mins of comedy I've seen.
It's scary how much the news now looks like this show.
Thanks
I think this is British humour at its finest. I doubt if it would play well in the USA, but obviously you Canadians are more sophisticated. 😏
Good to see Bono getting a credit in the titles ('Carpets')
In Hong Kong years back there was a bar called Yeltsons, it had a food menu but NO FOOD!!!
Quite a good selection of clips but nowhere near the best and many cut short.

to be fair, you can never upload true Best Of for this show because that would require a video of every episode in full length
Oh man, when this came out it was just mind blowing! So funny.
Yes Yes Yes! One of my all time favourites! More please! xD
The best satire. Some people thought this was real news!
"The Day Today" and "Brasseye" are the best of UK satire. Mind I told you guys that months back.🙂
This programme is the first time Alan Partridge was seen on TV, although the character was first on Radio 4's 'On the Hour' which was basically a radio version of this.
I still say "Proof, if proof be need be..." instead of "...be needed..." to this day.
Stewart Lee wrote Alan Partridge scripts so is a co. Creator 😮
But everyone admitted Steve Coogan is the voice and is
Alan Partridge it wouldn't work without him
Lots of great British comics are working on this pioneering show ❤
Amazing series as is Brass Eye.
The jokes about Sin Feinn being forced to inhale helium, and the records banned during Gulf War 1 and the reasons behind it are becoming lost to time.
Chris Morris wrote Four Lions which is a movie that is fuqn hilarious
Oh the best!!😂😂😂
Still waiting on this guys!!!
The Paedo' episode was the best.....Hello Spud & Lucy.
That was Brass Eye, but still good.
This is the show where the character of Alan Partridge first appeared.
The thick of it, another great show .
A number of years ago I came across a Canadian radio show called This Was That. It was a news parody with made up stories . I remember they were always apologising for something, even when nothing had happened.
They added genuine news footage in this show for added authenticity.
Btw, the segment about the leader of Sinn Féin inhaling helium is 100% true. Only they didn’t care to mention that it was specifically to undermine anything they had to say.

The IT crowd reaction are on Patreon. We couldn't post it on UA-cam
@@bradlucy OK, thanks, just joined
For those who may not know, Armando Ianucci was the driving force behind the amazing political comedy "Veep".
that's a bit weird but I am all for it.
Brass Eye was an excellent follow up to this show. Their Gay Navy clip on here is good.
Wow I was 😂😂😂❤
The thing is with the proliferation of news media, the absurd phythonesque stories aside, we know that this is just a tiny way across a line that some news outlets already walk.
IT WAS A DIG AT THE TORIES AND THEIR BREAKDIWN OF NHS, GUESS WHAT?? ITS THE SSME TODAY AFTER 13 YEARS

👩🦰- 😆
Steve coogan as the dentists patient before superstardom
Watch 4 lions by Chris Morris
Shut it Alan I want you to stop😂
the show was way funnier than those clips suggest
How's the non smoking going Lucy
There aren't many things that make me proud to be British, but The Day Today makes me proud to be British. Please, please, please...BrassEye next.
❤😂Well, now you have some idea, what/how The US looks like To us, every Day! Sad thing is, it has not been funny for a long time now. And it's only getting worse. Great series, sadly not enough episodes/seasons.
If you liked this DEFINITELY do Brass Eye!
That series was filmed a long, long, long time ago - WELL before Social media. So far ahead of its time
This series actually informed graphics for news programming going forward
You should definitely do reaction vids to this brilliant comedy ❤❤
Nice one guys👍loved this program, not sure if it was clips from brass eye? Anyway the way they mocked how sensational news is was funny as🤣cheers you two, take care✌️🍻
What happened to An Idiot Abroad?
Chris Morris is a genius
