- What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Greco Roman wrestling, and Catch Wrestling? Is there any athletic crossover between these grappling arts? If so, what is it?

How about that shopping locally in Shanghai and "Cooking with Gordan Ramsay Dewey" video emphasizing proper nutrition and healthy eating habits for aspiring athletes that so many of us were hoping for? 🙂
Can you teach us some high percentage guard passing techniques? Especially closed guard
The sparring music is fire tho
@@RamseyDewey hi Ramsey. Have you ever teach BJJ for kids ? I m wondering if the approach should be different than training adults or it is the same ? Thank you
Speaking of Catch wrestling what do you think of the current meta? Some people claim it's outdated compared to other grappling arts training and competition wise.
Hi Ramsey, back to your statement of the self defense industry is selling fake fear to public for profit, how about self defense for children to not get bullied at elementary school? I think it has more value than just fighting the imaginary enemy. For adults yes the absolute majority of street fight can be avoid, but for kids do you expect kindergarteners always run away, wisely de-escalate, or snitch to teachers when they have escalating squabble at playgroup and one boy starts to push or threaten? What's the your thought about self defense at elementary school? Thank you very much.
Without going down a rabbit whole. I've done all 3. CACC is my favorite and the most brutal of the 3. Plus in CACC there is no points. You either win or you don't. Snap, tap, nap or win.
and pins in certain rule sets
My favorite Gandalf skit of all time
Man I hate the point of view that has greco simply be no gi judo and mostly comes from mma athletes or commentators. Granted, Ramsey here emphasizes the little bit part, but other channels like mma che blatantly say greco is no gi judo. Most upper body judo throws use trips which are not permitted in greco, plus greco emphasizes control of the throws. You can get a most impressive 5 pointer and still lose the match because your opponent was able to escape and get better position whereas judo throws end when your opponent's back hits the mat. And greco is the only wrestling principle that really punishes stalling. Being defensive and blocking in greco earns you a nice visit to the ground and par terre.
Thank you! Exactly! I'm incredibly grateful to my Greco background because it made me have to be aggressive with my hand fighting. There's no time, and a call of passivity can and does spell the end of the match. If Karelin can lose by a single point from a stupid rule, I sure as hell can.
How do other wrestling sports not punish stalking ?
My 12 years of Greco served me well when I started BJJ a year ago. Greco throws really take the fight out of your opponent!
Thank you for answering my question with this dedicated video. Awesome!
Many thanks
Scott.
The Lord of the Rings reference alone warrants an upvote!
Question for the Coach:
What sort of process, if any, do you have for "figuring out" what a fighter you're training should work on most? Do you try to train everyone as a generalist? Do you find a fighter's strengths and then try to tailor a coaching method to emphasize strengths? Do you try to "fill holes" in people's weak aspects, or "turn them into traps" (to paraphrize Israel Adesanya)? Are there any cues you look for when training a fighter where you think "now that I've seen how they do this, I think I know what we'll work on next"?
Most of my grappling is from training judo, catch wrestling , and kudo . I really appreciate your vast knowledge of different grappling arts. I think you have brought catch wrestling to alot of people who otherwise wouldn't have heard about it, thanks. Hope you're having a great day.
I was dying with laughter at the Gandalf thing.
I laughed out loud at Gandalf. That was great!
I am a coach for Snakepit USA. I love coaching catch.
You explained the difference very well.
I've been enjoying the recent videos greatly, as always! Thanks, and I hope the knee is getting a bit better every day, despite all expectations!
Very educational. Thank you!
Sir I request you to make a video on how to choose your first martial art correctly and intelligently keeping in mind all the pros and cons 🙏
Ramsey making sure all those training highlight videos are seen regardless of commentary on top of them
I see BJJ and CACC philosophies like a cobra and mongoose. Both can kill each other and their rivalry is legendary.
The Cobra (BJJ) patiently waits for the Mongoose (CACC) to make a mistake and capitalize on it with a lethal strike.
And the Mongoose puts immense pressure on the Cobra with attacks and never staying in one place, until the Cobra's defenses fail and it's ultimately torn apart.
Today I learn a new BJJ guard Gandalf guard
Ultimate move
Greco is sorta odd among these options, and wrestling in general, but i like it for this. If you put submissions in Greco,it may end up looking more like a streamlined CACC than BJJ. I would love for someone to make Grapple-Greco a thing, an upper body grappling only, kinda like Dirty Boxing Championship.
Also,Greco is where the wrestlers have the highest physique, the paragon wrestler, all about throws and upper body power, rather than sweeps and takedowns.
Hello Ramsey Dewey, I am a fan of your videos and I have a question and I hope you consider it a good question, how many styles of martial arts do you know ,and what are the names of those martial arts? thank you very much for answering greetings from Tucson Arizona God bless you
Not the most optimal time to leave a youtube comment ironically, because i might just start driving myself to the hospital if this doesn't get better soon, but just remember everyone, that never go into a roll, spar, or fight with someone your not sure of trusting and may not respect you. Accidents can happen in combat sports, and it's unfortunate when they do when both fighters respect and trust one another, but this was based on a lack of trust and respect obviously. I'll share what happened. Not sure if you got my emails or not Ramsey. I detailed alot more in them. The reason I sent off the first one was due to youtube not allowing me to post a comment that must of violated their terms, so i figured you still might want to hear it. Figured this is a martial arts a community where we can share stories and such. There is something to learn from this for those that would like to know morea bout what occured. So last winter, I went to a meet up where casual and hobbiest martial artists go to spar a bit and watch other guys spar if they don't bring their rash and mouth guards. It's never meant to be very heavy, and most fights end with submission, or in a mounted posisiton that doesn't transition due to strikes in a short time even when the guy is blocking them efficiently. The odd time an accident happens and there is a knockout, or standing tko, but it's rare. So last winter I through out a back hand to my side just expectiing it to keep the guy busy more than anything after he released a waist lock on me when i started to lace in a kimura grip. When i threw the backfist at him as he retreated, my forearm caught him and it wobbled him, which counted for a tko. He was pretty upset about it, but it's how it goes. Not only him, but a few figured it was a cheap shot in a casual event, but it is what it is. So just two weekends ago now, I went to the meet up again, and I figured I'd put my name in to see if there where any heavy weights to spar with. Got matched up with the same guy. Thought I'd try rolling with him, but it didn't work out. The guy was very strong, i give him that, but I eventually got him again when I ironically released from a belly to back with my left hand, while also stepping back with my left, but still bracing onto him with my right. This all took a second, because he still hand his hands low and head open, so i can around with a stiff swinging open hand that connected solidly with his chin. So he went down, and i even tried to make his decent safer once i saw him freeze up for a second right after. I thought we were cool and it is what it is, but he wouldn't let it go. He still figured it was a rotten way to win, and ofcourse so did a few others. He wanted another round right away, and any place any time, so i obviously declined since for one, he just suffered a concusion and for my respect for him i don't want to give him brain damage if something were to happen again, but for another reason, you should never fight someone out of anger. Thats no longer sport, and it's obvious he has a lack of respect for me. Thats where i went wrong. So, I was stupid, and I finally agreed to just a roll. Where we would do nothing but grappling since he was convinced he'd atleast get me with that. So, almost feeling as if i needed to settle this to give him peace of mind, I decided to meet up with him. This happened just no less than an hour ago. My sights getting a bit better now. Still might go to the clinic. So I'm maybe a bit too trusting and naive, and have hope other people can be decent to, but it's not always the case. So he knows a spot in the city we could meet up at, and i oblige. I show up, and it's just him and his buddy in what i'm guessing would be his buddies basement. We consent to a recreational grappling match, and it seems like it's going ok. Than as if i had spider senses, i swear i felt it coming just a second or two before it did. I won't get into detail, but he drove his finger into my right eye. It shocked me to the point where i was instinctually going to rock him, but than i realized this was no ordinary eye poke. I'v been swatted in the eye, punched, poked many times. This made me hollar out a bit. So i tapped and walked out, while he was trying to say he didn't mean to. So, i probably shouldn't be writing anymore and get to a clinic. It's improving a bit, but isn't the greatest. Ramsey, you and your other one eyed brethren are insane. Theres not way i could effectivley fight with my vision like this. Spar safe everyone, and keep respect and trust for your opponent whether a friendly spar or something more.
Great material as usual
By the way different kind of martial arts of wrestling what do you think about Kurash ?
There are organized competitions, from what I heard quite popular. I have not been able to find attempts to use it in MMA which has raised my suspicions.
Could it be another Bullshido ?
Thanks in advance for your answer
Greetings
hi Ramsey, thank u so much for always making amazing content, i love your videos and u have helped me so much getting closer to God, thanks to you i appreciate life more, myself more, martial arts more and most importantly God's immense love. Thank you so much!
And what about Will wrestling William? Can Will will his will on Will?
9:57 I see you still have that hole in the wall from the Star Trek knife defence episode.
We don’t even have that gym space anymore let alone that hole in the wall. That clip is several years old.
Submission by spinal locks in catch?
Correct.
Ramsey, I know you said there’s no formal MMA stance and that you’ll constantly change stances and position during a fight. I’m curious what stances you’d flow through in an MMA fight?
If you use a bladed stance, your leg gets kicked out. If you use a square stance, you’ll get taken town. If you use a wrestling stance, you’ll get kicked or punched really easily.
Regarding your last statement, before the "Get out there and train", I sometimes think quite a few martial artists are delusional. 🧐😀
God I love grappling
Which grappling combat sport is the safest?
You and your training partners are the ones who will determine how safe or dangerous your grappling training will be- not the name of the style.
💪🏼🥋🙏🏼
Hello coach. I have a question: have you ever watched King of the Streets? If yes, what is your opinion? Is it sport or is it human cockfighting? How would you rate the technique of the participants? Fighting on concrete, it's only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or worse. But, I guess at least it proves once and for all to MMA naysayers that it works 100% in a no rules fight. It's MMA plus forbidden moves which don't even decide the fight, they are used as finishers (correct me if I am wrong). Thank you in advance for your response.
It looks like a creation of organized crime. The talent level is low.
It's brutal and proves mma can work in the streets, makes you think how a no rule fight between Khabib and conor would have went 😅
@RamseyDewey idk about low, they seem good in their own way 😅
@@Guile1117 In the fights I watched those illegal moves were seldom deciders, they were finishers. So one has to wonder since they don't provide any tactical advantage if they are only used to satisfy the audience's bloodlust. When they do judo throws they seem to be careful to land their opponent on his back, but it's only a matter of time someone lands, even accidentally, on his head which could prove fatal.
No-Gi is Wrestling. Gi is Jiu Jitsu period. Doesn’t matter how its marketed , its Wrestling. They just changed it to jump the marketing over Luta Livre when they came to the US. Lita Livre (which is Catch/ Judo)has “always” been considered the representative of Olympic Wrestling for Brasil.
No gi BJJ is not wrestling. If you really believe that, get on the mat with some high school level wrestlers (not even collegiate level) and do some actual freestyle, folk style, or Greco Roman rules sparring. If all you have done is BJJ, gi or no gi, you will find yourself being pinned at every opportunity until you learn the sport of wrestling. Not the same thing at all.
Wrestling, folkstyle or freestyle, doesn't have guards, leg locks, etc
Tune!
Hey coach what do you think is the most difficult concept to learn in Jiu-Jitsu?
For most people probably the concept that belts don’t matter. For me? Let me think about that.
@@RamseyDewey belts are cool but don't mean anything in the long run ! And belts don't always translate to skill .
@@RamseyDewey I'm excited to hear your response!
Hey there Ramsey. What do you think of competitive push hands? Have you tried it out? How different is it from wrestling in your opinion?
Push hands is a practice drill. It makes as much sense to do it competitively as as touching toes or tag the back drill.
It’s not wrestling, it’s not taijiquan- it’s a skill building game that is intended to improve limited aspects of those.
@ Thanks coach. I appreciate it!
@@RamseyDewey I think making some drills competitive is very good inside the gym tho, I think there is value, in say, point fighting for regular kickboxers, or making jujitsu guys only pin!
For example, Judokas do ne waza rounds where they just don't stand up and they have to "win".
@ drills are competitive by nature. That's what a drill is. Turning a drill into a whole sport, on the other hand, creates weird sport that gets gamified and quickly departs from the original intention of the drill.
For example, touching toes is a drill that is intended to improve an athlete's ability to set up level changes to facilitate takedowns. But the drill can be easily gamified to the point where both athletes are crawling around on their bellies playing pattycake with each other instead of anything remotely resembling wrestling.
This is the danger of gamifying a drill. I see the same kind of issues with competitive push hands. People start to develop skills that help them win the game instead of skills that help them become better grapplers.
I actually spent some time thinking about this very question. As you said BJJ is defensive grappling. The game of jujitsu game doesn’t stop at the pin think BJJ/AJJ are the “only” system developed continuing to fight from the pin. Like what does jujitsu have to offer to a grappler that other systems don’t. I would say a guard, sweeps, and subs from bottom. Other systems fit into BJJ but not always the other way around. I am a partitioner of BJJ but have done some other systems including striking based. I enjoy grappling the most. Would love any advice :) thank you for the video.
There is no American jj, its just no gi bjj.
@ matter of perspective i would not say gi or no gi changes my thoughts on the matter. I do think that America has changed grappling of jujitsu so much that it has a distinct culture difference. However I can respect you don’t feel that way changes nothing other than an outlook on the subject.
seems like judo has the most pieces of the puzzle
What matters more in MMA, strength/power or speed?
Strength
First love you small videos Like your Gandalf's impression of "You shell not pass". I can not stop lathing 😂.
Secondly: An suggestion fore Fantastical fictional fight scenes: Jackie Chan Vs Benny "The Jet" Urquides from "Wheels on Meals"
or some fight with featuring grappling, like from "Born a Champion"
( ua-cam.com/video/ZdoYmrV1M_o/v-deo.html&pp=ygUPYm9ybiBhIGNoYW1waW9u) with Sean Patrick Flanery.
Wished i had a good question fore you coach, but i don't can come up with one right now. Love your videos are super entertaining and your technical expertise on (Martial art) techniques helps me a lot.
Have a good day (Greetings from Sweden) Coach
Oh Gandalf…..
All I am going to say in Actual Catch Wrestling, and I only like training or sparring in Wrestling shoes. There is a lot of foot grabbing in Catch, and I hate touching men feet. Because there are more ankle lock submissions in Catch wrestling then you think?
Q&A Question: Does it make sense to hard-block a punch to the sternum with the fleshy part of two crossed lower arms when you can fly? You see, in Dragonball this is a remarkably common block. But would it EVER make sense (super speed and strength)? (Bonus: They also block punches to the head with a single lower arm, letting the opponent hit the middle of the lower arm head on, taking the full force into the bone)
If you dont train , thats irrelevant
Either or is going to make me slip a disk. Kickboxing, karate is fine for me. But I'm not out there picking fights.
😮🙂↕️🙂↕️
I pretty much am Gandalf and how dare you

Can I get your opinion on this video?
Love the content but you need a new gi!
I have a closet full of gis. No, I do not need another one.

Bjj is useless in mma wrestling dominates. Jsut look at the ufc
Have you trained for any of those sports?
Wrestling without BJJ is what Merab or Belal does. Wrestling with BJJ and Judo are what Khabib and Islam does. There is a difference
@ramsey dewey yes judo nad karate
@ produccionesmbj6914
Merab did judo and sambo which include the ground game and khabib didn’t do bjj he did sambo and bjj which include groudnwork. Where u getting ur info info from
@@Guest-m1c So, no. No you do not have any experience in the sports of BJJ, wrestling, or MMA.
