While you do make a good point that sometimes a relaxed jazz embouchure will not be able to generate a sound on the mouthpiece alone, I do think it’s a bit silly to completely disregard mouthpiece exercises and I especially disagree with your notion that practicing on a mouthpiece is harmful - I would argue that not practicing with a mouthpiece is harmful.
Playing your mouthpiece is like exploring the colors of your palette. It unlocks your awareness of the muscles being used for voicing, and it presents challenges that are like gymnastics for control. Playing the sax is like painting the canvas with those colors of your choosing. The more you can do with a mouthpiece alone, the more you can willingly manipulate your sound on the sax to your own choosing.
NOT practicing with a mouthpiece ever would harm one’s sound, because eventually the saxophone’s various imperfections would end up controlling the player’s habits. After some time, the player may feel that they want to change their sound to match one of their heroes, but they have little idea how to change their sound - because they haven’t explored their palette. So then they feel “stuck” with a sound they are unhappy with.
It should be the player that controls the sax’s sound. That control can be developed on the mouthpiece through various exercises. I like to play various scales in a full octave on the mouthpiece in multiple keys, as well as playing melodies such as Happy Birthday or Softly as a Morning Sunrise, etc. This is very difficult at first. But with enough persistence, it becomes easier and very useful.

What an honor for me to have this comment from you in my first video in English! I truly appreciate and respect every aspect of your comment. Even when we see this topic from a different perspective, I will truly try out your advices and then I will make a video talking about my experience with this journey. Maybe is good for me to revisit this mouthpiece routine that I had back in Cuba. Is funny that I used to practice pretty much the same things that you recommended to me. As I said, I will put in practice and I will post the results. Thank you so much for the Feedback.

I respectfully disagree with what you are saying. I do not agree that practising with your mouthpiece ruins your saxophone tone. For starters, the saxophoen embouchure is not static, it is something that changes over time, and is dependent on each person's facial structure. The purpose of voicing a saxophone mouthpiece which is practising with a saxophone mouthpiece is to stop biting on the mouthpiece which most people playing the saxophone do, and they struggle to pay in tune, because they cannot use their tongue and throat position to tune the notes on the saxophone. Your throat moves when you play the saxophone, I can see it clearly on the video. If the person doesn't use playing the saxophone mouthpiece, the learn how to tune the saxophone with tongue and throat position, to tune and intonate notes correctly, how exactly are they mean to improve their tuning. Solve the problem, instead of telling people what not to do. Mouthpiece exercises have never destroyed people's saxophone tone. Poor understanding of embouchure pressure and how to use the throat and tone, lead to poor tone.

One can get a lot of work on voicing done with just the mouthpiece. Tongue and throat business can be worked on effectively with just a mouthpiece. Good airstream will produce tones on the mouthpiece with almost no embochure adjustment Play arpeggios and as much scale as you can with just voicing techniques. Of course you play all saxophones with as relaxed as possible lip pressure I've been doing it for 50 yrs on sopranino thru Bass saxophones. people who tighten on alto and soprano sound pinched to me.

Following for the comments. This is why voicing for jazz can be confusing. There is more research on this recently. You should blow your mouthpiece a whole step or step and a half lower than the recommended pitch for a classical mouthpiece of the same voice.
I don’t think anybody is teaching to just practice on the mouthpiece to make up for practicing on the horn. They are probably saying it is a good exercise to keep your chops together when on tour or something. Yes, it’s not like with a brass mouthpiece and buzzing which can be very beneficial. Our thing is different.
Anyway, thanks for the different perspective!

This is a terrible explanation of why to not play with your mouthpiece. Practicing with your mouthpiece and figuring out how to balance your embouchure to hit certain pitches is an extremely important thing to practice, especially with your mouthpiece. Learning when to tense and relax your embouchure and how to bend notes is super important. It help's with overtones, multiphonics, and altissimo especially. It will also help with your inner ear as there are no keys to hide behind, just you, your ear and your embouchure.

This is clearly out of context, and improperly applied. When you can play a range of pitches using the mouthpiece, you will need a more released embouchure position just the same. The idea is to support enough to produce the pitch, and then experiment with both lip drop (jaw release or lip slur) and palate position to influence change of pitch. If you can play a melody with just your mouthpiece, then there will be no “tightness”. Try a melody, then report back 👍🏼

But i tried my best on this last video were I explained the philosophy and approach behind this concept of no practicing with your mouthpiece. I just don't believe is worthy the time practicing with your mouthpiece because I did it for years. I was able to play a melody but I was not able to play melodicly. To play better, you have to think better, you have to sing better in your head.

Pretty controversial stance for such a short video, stating something like this in almost no context goes against most of the saxophone pedagogies we have already developed over the past century. Practicing with the mouthpiece should make your voicing on the instrument feel easier when you go to it, you shouldn't try to directly recreate your mouthpiece sound on the horn. If you can get a clear, focused and controlled sound on the mouthpiece, it will be easier to produce a good sound on the instrument.
