Ulmo is the best Vala for his empathy for and tireless work in aid of the Men and the Elves, even when they were abandoned by the other Valar. Ulmo forgives your mistakes and actively seeks to help you, even when it's inconvenient to himself, even before you asked him to or searched for him - indeed when you're still officially unfriends. To me as a Christian, that's what a true deity is supposed to be and to do. The best Valie is Nienna. I love that this lady of love is not a sex object, but her love is higher love, and that she's also the lady of wisdom and strenght.
Ulmo is definitely my favorite. He never stopped thinking of the people in Middle earth, even after the revolt of the Noldor, he still regarded those living there, under Morgoth's threat, with compassion and concern. He did what he could for them.
I always liked Ulmo. He's the wisest of the Valar and the most compassionate (maybe after Nienna). He mourns the marring of Arda (enough that Eru himself comforts him). He foresees that taking the Elves to Valinor could mean trouble and he never forsakes Middle Earth. He maintains it while it was under Melkor's dominion, he helps the Eldar reach Valinor, he helps Turgon and Finrod and guides Tuor to Gondolin. To me, he's the Archangel Gabriel of Tolkien's mythology.
Definitely Tulkas for me. Imagine striking fear into the heart of the devil himself. Imagine just laughing as you’re wrestling the devil with your bare hands. The devil putting all of his plans on hold until you personally aren’t awake. Just you. The most badass character in Tolkien’s works and one of the most badass characters in all of literature.

And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke." (Book of Isaiah, 6:1-4.)
Apart from what others have said about Ulmo being their favorite, another reason why he's my favorite is his respect and desire to maintain the freedom of the Elves when the Valar were deciding to bring them to Valinor. I think that is a detail that's often forgotten when people praise him, but he truly believed that they should be free to choose and govern themselves, instead of being ruled by the Valar in a place away from their homeland.

Tulkas! I love that he was just relaxing in the void with Eru and then somehow he hears about Melkor causing grief and he's like, " Yep, it's about that time." Hitches a ride on a comet (it's not in the lore but seriously, you know he made an entrance like it's the WWE) and puts Melkor on his face in the dirt, grinning the whole time. Boss.
I think there are some similarities between Tulkas and Bombadil in how carefree they are laughing all the time they are two of my fave Tolkien characers
@@rockyblacksmith the stronger one could or I would like to think so , tulkas laughter discarded darkness and clouds so one would assume that maia under his wings would be highly resistant to evil and darkness . But who knows 😅

Tulkas is my absolute favorite! He kinda reminds me of Luffy of One Piece, a strong and swift warrior, slow to true anger and smiling and laughing in battle 😁
Would to see a first age tv series. As Morgoth is about to claim victory on the field of battle a blinding light is cast from the West and the sounds of war horns and booming laughter deafen the lands. Watching Melkor flee in terror at the descent of Tulkas would be absolutely legendary.

@@ErandinJayasooriya I think more:
"In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.
Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.
And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke." (Book of Isaiah, 6:1-4.)
I like what you're doing, trying to distance Tolkien being a Christian and it's influence on his work but rather drawing it closer to pagan religions
I’d love to learn more about ulmo
Always been drawn to the Poseidon-esque figures in ancient mythology
This is no exception
Thank god for this channel, really helping me contextualise everything in Rings of Power
Ah yes, perfect timing, just when I have managed to memorize all of the names of the Valar 😀
Time to upgrade!
It's hard to choose between Ulmo and Mandos. Orome is probably third.
Yay ! I love your videos ! And the Valar are the Tolkien topic I probably understand the least Well done ! Keep it up !
I would like episode focused on Aman / Valinor, showing all know holdings and its founding stories.
I want to see a video on Iluvatar. To me he is a very mysterious character and i would love to see a video essay on Iluvatar. Keep up the fantastic essays.
Boss.
Great Video. An Ulmo video would be a good place to start if you plan on taking a deeper dive into the Valar!
We always appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos. Love from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰🤝🏴.
Thank you! Nerd of the rings.
Orome. The Huntsman is who I have dreamed of being since childhood, though I didn't know the name until I was an adult
I think there are some similarities between Tulkas and Bombadil in how carefree they are laughing all the time they are two of my fave Tolkien characers
Perhaps Bombadil was once a Maia of Tulkas (yes I think Bombadil was a Maia)
@@gmansard641 That would be hard to reconcile with the fact that he was immune to the rings power though. Other Maiar clearly are not.
@@rockyblacksmith the stronger one could or I would like to think so , tulkas laughter discarded darkness and clouds so one would assume that maia under his wings would be highly resistant to evil and darkness . But who knows 😅
I appreciate you bring up how 1 valar tends to have his disciples go bad. I think it’s because he got away with the dwarf thing
Thanks for the great video! Tulkas is the guy!
This is a great video Nerd! Keep up the great work.
Love your explanation!!!
Should have went with Egyptian mythology and Anubis for your Mandos comparison. Great videos though, love them!
I always really liked Ulmo, because his entity is similar to the water entity in the Narnia Prince Caspian story and he seems to never give up on the Children of Iluvatar in Middle Earth. He is linked to all good and pure water...😁❤🍻🧙♂️
Also, lets get a full video on both Tulkas and Orome. 😤💪
I will go with Tulkas as my favorite not by his strength but how he impacts the battlefield and helps allies defeat any evil that is upon them.
Great videos. I’m interested in Tulkas.
I’ve always had an affinity for Oromë. He spent more time in Arda than the other Valar, roaming the beautiful endless forests, hunting and making good friends with the Elves. What could possibly be more appealing?
Orome is a badass
Loving this Ainur-centric series! Any chance of looking at the Maiar next?
Great suggestion! I've covered all the wizards in their own vids, but I've been thinking I should do one on the non-wizard maiar!
@@NerdoftheRings yusssss
@@NerdoftheRings Yes
@@NerdoftheRings aside from Sauron and the Istari I didn't know there were others named actually. 😳
As always, a clear & concise explanation. Thank you. Your comment about Aule not having the greatest record with his students really made me laugh. What an understatement! :-))
Cast of The Valar:
Manwe - Russell Crowe
Ulmo - Gerard Butler
Aule - Joel Edgerton
Orome - Jason Clarke
Tulkas - Edgar Edgerton
Lorien - Ian Somerhadler
Mandos - Ralph Fiennes
Melkor/Morgoth - Mark Strong
This video truly helps me understand the book the silmarillion thank you and great work
awesome vid Matt as always
TULKAS!
Hear now Melkor, I have come; for thee!
Actually, Melkor with full power would beat Tulkas' ass. Melkor was about to defeat combined 13 Valar single handedly before Tulkas' entrance. Do you think Tulkas could beat 13 Valar single handedly? lol
Tulkas was always my favorite. He was the one the really put an end to Morgoth's terror
I don't really have a favourite, I love them all.
I would love to see a more detailed presentation on Mandos though. And as a side note, a deep dive into the lives and death of Glorfindel, as one of the few Eldar we ever see come back out of the halls of Mandos, would be awesome.
Tulkas is my absolute favorite! He kinda reminds me of Luffy of One Piece, a strong and swift warrior, slow to true anger and smiling and laughing in battle 😁
You should do a video on all the Maia and who they serve or learned from.
Would to see a first age tv series.
As Morgoth is about to claim victory on the field of battle a blinding light is cast from the West and the sounds of war horns and booming laughter deafen the lands.
Watching Melkor flee in terror at the descent of Tulkas would be absolutely legendary.
I'd love to hear you talk about Makar and Meássë & why they were a Lord & Lady of the Valar in the early texts but removed in the later.
Ainur when the elves scrape their knee: *Oh it's ok sweety let me help*
Ainur when men are targeted by two Dark Lords for thousands of years: *that sounds like an issyou, not an issme*
Man, all of them...but more curious of the Lorien... Great site
Aule for keeping the pot spicy - imagine how boring it woulda been if only tulkas showed up and beat up melkor everytime.
I love how malkor is the strongest but scared of some battle hungry guy
@6:10
My understanding is that Hades isn't a permanent destination either, I think it was a way to reincarnate the soul into a new body in Greek mythology. Tartarus and Elysium were permanent iirc.
Close, the Elysian Fields were the place where you got a shot at reincarnation as a reward for being good. The ones who managed to reincarnate and get the Elysian Fields three times get to go live on a special island of their own.
