Wow, I can hear the joy and enthusiasm in your voice and resonate with your excitement. Mango Madness looks mesmerizing. Greetings and good luck for your marvelous projects.
Simply stunning, Annette ❤ Your choices of dahlias so closely match mine. I started growing them last year and just fell in love with them. So hope they survived in my basement over the winter. Ordered some more for this year. Can't wait to see them all bloom. I just know your garden will be magnificent too!
Annette would you consider discussing how you plant out your dahlias? Do you plant in rows or within your landscape? Do you plant other flowers mixed in?
Hi Lynne, yes, of course. I used to plant them all in one big long bed (in fact, we still call it the dahlia bed) and I tried to do it in an ombre style. However, last year, the garden progressed so much that I was able to plant shrubs and perennials in all the beds and so I inter-planted them with my dahlias. I spent quite a bit of time planning the colour schemes by printing pictures of each dahlia and putting them into complimentary groups. It was hard work but so very worthwhile because I loved my garden more last year than ever before. There were particular combinations that worked really well and I'm going to repeat them this year.
So look forward to your videos. Lots of really useful information again. Great to have the pictures of the plants you are discussing with their size too. Thank you.
Daisy Duke has really strong stems, and on the shorter side. It was my top 3 performing dahlia, and so beautiful. Labyrinth is my absolute favorite, and it’s always been consistent with coloring.
Ooh. That's great to know, Michelle. Thank you. I love Daisy Duke but I do struggle with the floppy heads on the larger dahlias like Labyrinth. I hope this one is nice and sturdy too. 😁
Enjoyed your video and am super excited for your dahlia haul! I really loved Labyrinth last season, gorgeous blooms and super prolific!! Can’t wait to see what you have in your other orders 😊
I love dahlias too, such pretty colors and so many to pick from making it hard to decide but I am always partial to pink. You will be busy planting all your seedlings once they get big enough. You have quite a nice selection and love the larkspur.
Thanks Jane. Yes, I get carried away with my seed sowing every year and it drives Richard mad! But it's one of the projects that I love the most - I find it so relaxing but also addictive. My seed packet collection could start a shop! 😂
@@cottoverdiI am so glad to hear you say that you overplant seeds! I plated way too many seeds, but it is so much fun. I have one dahlia I grew from seed this year. I have had that seed packet for over five years, I believe, so I was surprised to get that one. I will see how it grows. It may not have time to do much. I am fairly new to your channel. I am so looking forward to your garden’s development. 😊
I tried to get Kelsey Annie Joy but it was sold out. So I got Sylvia instead. Loving that Mango Madness. I'm not growing anemones or ranunculus this year. Can't wait to see everything in bloom. Bonny
Love your dahlia haul. I have American Sunset as well as American Dawn- both stunning. Love them. I have all the Cafe range- most gorgeous flowers. . My new dahlias, this year include Otto's Thrill, Blue Bayou, Mango Madness. Night Silence, Strawberry Ice, Creme de Cassis, Penhill Watermelon, Pacific View, and Nuit d'Etre and Karma Gold. I so hope your replacement dahlia, Teesbrooke Audrey grows well for you. It must have been very disappointing. My Ranunculus are germinating, but ni sign of the Anemones. I guess they take longer? All my Lisianthus Corelli Pink germinated- in fact I got 11 seedlings so an extra one, but only 8 of the 10 Sapphire mxd seeds germinated, although the 8th one appeared yesterday so I am not giving up on the last 2 just yet. I sowed them on 15th Jan. My first ever time of growing these, after being inspired by your beautiful blooms. I want to thank you for all your help and advice, it has been invaluable. Happy gardening lovely lady 😃 x
Hi Be, I love Blue Bayou. It was my first dahlia and I've always loved it because of that but also the colour. Creme de Cassis is gorgeous too but annoyingly short. The anemones definitely take much longer to germinate so don't give up. and interestingly, once they germinate, they grow faster than the ranunculus! You've had so much success with your Lisis! Well done!
Love your dahlia haul! Think I might be ordering some of the Night Silence variety. Also, really nice to see the seedlings update. I do like your 6 cell trays -are they the reusable, very sturdy type from Containerwise? I too sowed some orlaya seeds for the first time this year, but a few days after sowing I read somewhere that they need cold stratification for a few weeks, so i stuck them in the fridge (and oops, forgot all about them until now!). So I’ll fish them out tomorrow and put them on a heated propagador to see if anything germinates. I really hope they do, because they’re just such pretty plants! Thanks for the lovely video Annette x
Thanks Elie. These 6-cell trays have been a game changer for me. I started using them last year when I got fed-up with the 40-cell trays always breaking and it was too difficult to get the seedlings out. These smaller trays work well because it's easy to gently squeeze underneath to get the cell to loosen. But mostly because I'm not a flower farmer so I never need 40 of any one variety and I used to find that with the larger trays, I was having to combine varieties and then they'd germinate and grow at different rates, which became awkward and wasted space. They're from that well-know retailer - here's a link amzn.to/49pKfdi Good luck with your Orlaya - they should be fine.
Hi Marie, I sow into multi-purpose compost so it has nutrients for the first 6 weeks. Also, the seed-leaves contain sufficient nutrients to create the first true leaves. So, I will begin to fertilise when those first true leaves appear. I start with a very weak solution and build up, depending on the size of the seedling. Some seeds/plants don't need fertilisation (like Yarrow and grasses). I use a seaweed fertiliser at this seedling stage. Hope this helps.
Hi Lynn. we have absolutely LOADS of slugs and snails, unfortunately. We use nematodes on all our beds in mid-March and this really helps with the slugs. Also, I start all my dahlias indoors and only put them out (on to our patio) during the day until after our last frost. By this time, when we plant them into out beds, they are large enough to withstand any pesky attacks! Good luck with yours. I highly recommend the nematodes and I have a video on my channel showing how easy it is to use if you're unsure about it.
Oh, that's exciting. We have a few diffs - but only the 'boring' yellow singles - they're always the first to bloom. It'll be a few weeks before we get the bore exciting doubles or whites.
Hi Victoria, I've been collecting and growing dahlias for so many years. I don't use any specialist suppliers - just the usual online stores but I don't want to recommend any of them in particular because I have found over the years that they all make mistakes and that can be so disappointing.
Hi Marie, they should be pricked out when you can see the first set of true leaves - they will still be tiny seedlings so make sure you only hold them by their seed leaves and never the stem.
Where do you get your Chamallow ranunculus corms from? I can see lots of photos of the plant online but nowhere to purchase! Is there another name for them?
Such a gorgeous Dahlias, exciting to see it bloom.
Thanks Ana. 😊
Can’t wait to see videos of copper boy and jowey frambo this summer!
Thanks - I'm planning so many dahlia videos because I love to compare the different varieties. 😁🌸
Thanks for the video. I added Daisy Duke on the suggestion of one of your previous videos. Always love to see what other people love
Awesome, thank you! 😊

Thanks Kati. I LOVE dahlias so much - they are my perfect flower. Well, and roses....and peonies...and tulips....and...the list goes on! 🤣
Glad you're reunited with Night Silence!
Me too Julie!
This is my first year growing dahlias, I'm in Bucks too, up the road in Wing.

Hi Rachael, I got mine from Zoe Woodward. I think she has sold out for this year.
Ah thank you, I’ll try again later in the year 🌷
Being vegan, I don't use pest bait, so, as much as I love dahlias, I can't grow them, as they just get devoured, as do my daffs.
That's such a shame. Would you be open to using nematodes? They're naturally occurring?
Couldn't finish watching your video because an ad for hearing aids took over.
That's a shame Linda but unfortunately I have no control over which ads are shown.
