Mr. White was the first "rock" musician I ever saw perform. It was a Top 40 package show in Birmingham, Alabama in 1970 just a few weeks before my ninth birthday, and my parents dropped my older brothers and me off at the Municipal Auditorium. The 'Tony Joe' album had just been released, and "High Sheriff of Calhoun Parrish" and "Save Your Sugar for Me" were getting airplay on the local radio stations. ("Groupy Girl" was just a b-side here.) He was great then, and he's been great every time I've seen him since.
