In this video, we'll look at a 2-stroke, gas-powered Husqvarna weed eater string trimmer that will not stay running and there is an easy to replace $0.75 part that is usually to blame. Most owners of this type of equipment will throw these away rather than take the time to figure out why they won't run properly. The part they need to fix it is easy to obtain and costs pennies. They're available on on major web retailers and most parts stores. They are called a "carburetor metering diaphragm". Watch this video, learn how to replace them, and never throw away another gas string trimmer as long as you live.

The fact that you had to go through like four carbs before you found one you hadn't already cannibalized just goes to show how often this repair comes up.
The birdies really appreciated this one. They were hootin it up.
And there’s your dinner.
Hi there, i found your while browsing on youtube and watched couple of videos. It hit me, it csme to me that things you did is like learning channel to me. I'm happy that i came across your channel. I just wanna say, thank you for having this channel on youtube. I myself does a little for myself, most times i succeed sometimes not good but, there's another day.I learned couple of things on your channel.
The first thing I would have tried is cutting the trimmer line much shorter. You have about 6" too much line. That alone will make the engine bog.
I am glad you started up this channel. Going to tune up all my equipment this year. Thanks for the refresher course.
Shaft lubrication is usually is neglected on string trimmers also.
I call them two-stroke fuel pumps.
When I lived down in south Louisiana I found a lot of good mowers on the curb with minor issues. For a guy like me it was a gold mine of cool free stuff and scrap metal everywhere. I found crates of stainless steel forks, spoons, butter knives etc one day...more than I had room for. Not sure what that was about. Plus about 150 mini sterling silver collectible spoons that looked like they came from tourist destinations. Sold those for a dollar each to a silver scrapper. One time I found a drum set and about 100 microscopes in a dumpster. Put together a nice microscope from parts of them. Most were missing parts or damaged.
Hey Brad. Just from experience on Husqvarnas, you can bottom out the adjustment screws and then unscrew them 2.5 revolutions to set them to the factory air/fuel ratio. Usually a good starting point for adjustment. Also, I would suggest adjusting while the carb is tight to the intake, since it will suck air and run lean, possibly throwing off your adjustment.
Good to know someone is keeping the dying trade alive!
Was thinking the same thing... Didn't see him nut down the carb with the air cleaner off (doesn't mean he didn't off camera tho) so can only assume it was sucking air....
One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. That’s why I got a divorce.
Man, there’s nothing better to do but guitars and lawnmowers. I like both channels keep it up dude I like to ask you something on one of my Vox amps one time.
Love the CW McCall look, man! All you need is a CJ-5 with a 4 wheel drive, sans the smokie on your tail. 🤠
Thanks for the tip on gaskets and diaphragm.
I have a 14 year old Sears push mower that has a Briggs & Stratton Platinum engine on it. Run nothing by synth oil and ethanol free gas in it. I couldn't kill that thing if I tried. Small carbs love that ethanol free gas.
On that little husky, the quick test is a little trick that you fire it up to the point it's running as fast as it can and put your thumb over the air intake port and very quickly let off . What that does is build a high vacuum to draw any crap out of the main jet . Don't make adjustments to the carb unless someone has messed with it . Too many guys start messing with adjustments when there is most likely a small amount of trash that needs to be gone . Oh, if you are a little slow removing youre thumb it might take removing the spark plug, shooting it with carb cleaner or brake Kleen and blow it out because of flooding . :)
If you really want to go the cheap route, I've managed to unmummify those pumper diaphragms by soaking them in lacquer thinner. Sometimes it takes 20 minutes, sometimes a day, sometimes 2 - but they will eventually soften and can be reused. Done it many times before. If you rebuild the carburetor and it still won't rev up, check for a plugged spark arrestor screen. If it's carboned up, use a propane torch to heat up the screen red hot so the carbon catches fire and burns off. Dunk the red hot screen in cool tap water. The thermal shock blasts all the ash off the screen - no scrubbing required. Use a small vise grip to hold the screen by a corner. Great video and thanks for sharing!
Should try brake fluid. It's my go to.
Love you brother, been watching your content and learning from you since I was really young. Always good to see you and god bless you and your family!
I appreciate that
Smashing repair Brad.
Always great to bring a handy tool back to life.
Worth the time and effort :-D
subscribed from the Reg channel. glad you are doing better! I always shut my gas off and run it til it dies. Also in small engines. Instead of searching for non-ethanol gas I just use MOBIL 93 octane. I have lived here 22 years and between my 11 hp tecumseh snow king Husqvarna snowblower and 2 lawnmowers. I've never had a carb issue. Oil changes yearly or bi yearly. Air filters as needed. Tip top mcgoo
I use alcohol free gas on all of my lawn equipment. Never had any rubber rot.
Yes avoid ethanol fuels like the plague in small engines. It causes way more problems than the supposed money you're saving by using it. A gallon here and there of premium is cheaper than a repair bill and having to replace parts.
The octane isn't what to look for. Ethanol free is. It's just that 93 many times will/might be ethanol free.
@@dans_Learning_Curve it's hard to find around here so I go with best availabile and it's worked for me. 22 years 0 carb issues
Norton, you’re a genius!
Hello Brad. Thanks for the great videos.
I rarely bother trying to adjust a bad carb if it's got the proprietary heads on the needles - chances previous owner had the tools to screw them up is very low. If fresh fuel, good fuel lines and clean filters are confirmed jump straight to ripping the carb apart.
them motor blowers stihl i fixed was only carb balls forming in the exhaust poke with a small rod saved $150 maintenence lucky i looked .
Most people don’t remember to turn it off or on , seen it alot allready this year lolol 😊
I have a sneaking feeling that this guy fixes instruments and amplifiers too. He reminds me of Brad the Guitologist. lol
The diaphragm may just be stiff from sitting, often you can just play with them to keep it running and Rev it as you can and it will lose up. Don't adjust anything till you try or you will be doing it again.
I haven't worked on small engines for a little while now because I haven't had to but I just realized, I dont even know where to order parts any more.
$3.75 for a dozen of eggs. The chicken who layed the golden eggs.
Great informative video.
Great Video, Thanks! I would interested in learning the idle adjustment process.
I was hoping you were going deeper into that as you were making the adjustments.
Will do in a future video! Good suggestion.

Thanks Brad I've learned a lot watching your content 👍🇺🇸
Glad to hear it
I have nearly the same troy bilt/honda mower. Ran it till the deck rotted. Re-built it on a new deck. And the thing is still a work horse.
Never heard the expression dudettes before, that´s kinda cool :D
There is no such thigh as a $1 part anywhere in america.
I went with the 4 Cycle model, starts on the first pull every single time
Maybe the fuel is old . A mix fuel can get some really strange smells beyond just the old fuel smell . Along with the Alki added junk . lol
When I saw the jag in the driveway. Parts car in the garage .
Yes you ca fix anything.
I haven't heard the same dudes and do that since I was in high school LOL
Eggsactlly right.
Thanks
Thank YOU! Appreciate you, Alan.
Brad, just an silly thought. Have you had at least had the fleeting thought of returning a mower like that and place a sign on it like : "fixed. you're welcome!"
I have, but unless I could film the reaction somehow, I think I'd be wasting my time. Would be funny if you could stake out the house and see their puzzled reaction.
No way ... that'd be too nice ... can't make a buck that way ...

Yeah I know bad for business
The person most likely already bought a new one...
All the chain saw carbs are the same. Best to rebuild the original carbs because the replacement carbs dont work half the time and crap out later. I ordered a whole bunch of the diaphrams off ebay from China.
What types of gasoline have been found to cause problems?
You need to clean the carb with carb cleaner B4 you start to take it apart .
for you gas use premium ethanol free from a dedicated pump (only for premium ethanol free) so you don't get what in the line and hose from the person before you especially on small purchases. I use Husqvarna XP or Echo Redmax oil and don't have any problems. Run the premium ethanol free on all your small engines. I use it on my chainsaws, trimmers, any small engine.
New subscriber.
Mr. Fixologist, where are you located? I'm sure you aren't near me, that would be too lucky for me. If you were though, I have some more business for you if you want it. What state are you in?
Kentucky.
So i go on UA-cam looking at videos of eyepiece cameras for my telescope..end up watching this 🤔 Brad always reels me in 🤷😂
Hi Brad!!
Hey girl. How you doing?
@@Fixologist1 thanks for stopping by last night!

awesome!!!!!!!
Dont rev because too much line out
take care🙂
Thanks so much for the tip! Really appreciate that.
is that a jaguar x-type? i know where it was built and could find out who built it if i had the vin. gorgeous car but quite rare in the US
XJ8.
@Fixologist1 I looked it up after I posted. Same body pretty much, but the headlights are different, which was what threw me. I had family working at Jaguar, and I'd got a job there myself once I left school but went into the army instead. Jag left coventry (second home) shortly after your car was built and moved to Birmingham, and u didn't want to join them after rejoining civvy Street.
what s the car in the garage?
Jaguar Vanden Plas
You can get a chinese replacement which is the same brand they use for less than 20 dollars but dont use the chinese sparkplug in the kit because it wont even run on there plug.NGK all the way.
Great video, I recommend a guard on the string trimmer for 2 reasons, one it cuts the line to the right length. When the string is too long it bogs down the engine and can over heat. Also it appeared to be smoking too much and this could cause the spark arrester in the muffler to carbon up over time.
I really liked the HISENSE ROKU TV video, very interesting replacing LEDs
Hey Brad Flexthh
Idle is to high
уважаю молодец
I believe it’s time for you to become the buildolgist and build a work bench. That might make good content. What say you sir?.
Lol my wife just came in the room and said "isn't that the handsome guy who fixes amplifiers" 🤷😂😂
Why yes, dear. Yes it most certainly is!
