I'll never forget the statement Normann Stadler, triathlet and mutiple world champion, who had to deal with life threatening heart issues himself, made to Marino Vanhoenacker, an athlete who he had been coaching, during his dnf in Kona: "It's just sport!". Never forget that! Honour your life, not a race! You did the right thing!

Thank you so much for this honesty and sharing with us. I'm an ultrarunner also in my 30s with heart disease due to a congenital defect and your story really resonates with me and you continue to inspire me. Keep going! As cheesy as it sounds, gratitude and positive thinking will see us through.

Years ago when I was in bad shape I watched your videos regularly, learning so much from you as far as all the important basics in running. It felt like you were my coach even though we had never met or talked (and haven't until now). I still enjoy running on a regular basis and return to your channel every now and then. I'm very sorry you're suffering now, but I'm sure you will pick yourself up. You sure succeeded in helping me out and you've been a beast in your running all along. Best from Germany!

Sage, I’m your biggest fan, I drove 2 hours to your morning group run in Boulder where you demo’d the zinal. We got a picture and I always look at it when I need someone to motivate me. I am very happy you dropped out. You are such a competitive guy and I feel sometimes you overestimate where you’re at fitness wise and I really just want to see you come down to the 50ks and 50 milers where you always dominate. I’m happy you’re alive, and I am happier that you’re in good spirits after all that happened to you. Anyways, you rock dude, if you ever find yourself in Lakewood, Colorado and want to get an easy run in, let me know 👊👍❤️

Get after it Sage! I ran my first ultra in 2016 thanks to your training plan and have learned tons from this channel over the years. The stress of COVID and other life events have been a major setback for my baseline health. I struggled with motivation and minor and mysterious injuries which came from no discernible cause. In the past couple of months I've been clawing myself back and just yesterday gave myself an overuse injury in my stronger knee. Doing PT while watching this video with a fire to return to the trails.
I look forward to continuing to look to you for inspiration for longevity in the sport.

I am kind of in the same situation. I got serious about running about two years ago, and started my journey that, in my hopes, would have led me to my first marathon this year. Well, I fractured my ankle in a funky way and it’s been 9 months since my last run. My legs are boiling to be back on the streets, but I have accepted that being patient and going through all the medical stuff in a proper way is just the best thing to do. One thing that helped me immensely has been Victor Frankl’s “A man’s search for meaning”. Those ideas reshaped my perception of struggle in a profound way. I wish to you just as I wish to myself a very successful healing journey, from the bottom of my hearth!

I'm glad that you're staying positive. I'm not a doctor nor ultra competitive runner. That said, I can't help but think that you need to restart your racing career since your PE. By that I mean start at the lower distances with higher pacing and burning your lungs out. I think that ultrahard short efforts will help return elasticity to your lungs. However, the races need to be short since you don't want stay at that point for prolonged periods of time. Shorter races also mean that you can do more of them in a given calendar space. The quicker all out, recover, repeat cycles are what you need for longer-term recovery. Once there's a noticeable feel when you're digging deep then I think it's time to move to the bigger distances. That's just what's come in my mind ever since your PE so I wanted to share the thought with you.
