Justin Tse Hey Justin , hey community, I´m looking for a beginner camera: I can´t decide between the GX 80 und the A6000. I mainly photograph a DJ in action. Landscapes und Portraits are secondary. Thank you for your help
I really hate that several youtubers are campaigning for the removal of the Surface connect magnetic charging port. This is one of the BEST features of the Surface! I hate charging ports that have Dingalings that plug into a device for charging because they are prone to failure and subject to break your device. I have too many friends who have broken phones and laptops that don’t work because they yanked them off tables because of the charging cable. Which is why I think Microsoft would be so stupid to get rid of the magnetic charging port! I would never buy it if they did.
Holy shit, you don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this video, thanks Justin, your the best. (I don’t know how I didn’t get a notification for this!)
When I was in college, I wished I had something like this especially in economics with all those different graphs. Though, I could always go back. Haha Keep up the good work, Justin!
Well the prices have certainly dropped. The 1TB version costs the same now as the 512gb version was half a year ago and same goes for the 512gb costing just as much as how much I paid for the 256gb model when the laptop came out
For its size, the bezels dont bother me as much as it makes holding the device way more convenient. I've used the surface pro however and I admit, for a device that small, the bezels should be smaller. However, for this, I believe the benefits of it might be better in the long run of usability. You dont hold the screen for laptops like the dell xps 15 or the lg gram so its not an apples to apples comparison.
Microsoft has done great job at hinge area something different and seems more durable than normal hinge 😍 Background music nailed it, once again amazing review great bro.
Finally someone who didn't fucked a review up in comparing it to much to Apple's devices! ... I love how you did the Review! Wish the other Tech UA-camrs would review like you do! Great Stuff man!
I don't know why everyone is complaining about the proprietary charging port alias Surface Connect. 1. You can charge the Surface Book with the Surface Connect and the USB C 2. If they would remove this port, all the accessories for this port wouldn't work anymore, but some people are having this accessories for e.g. a Surface and are happy, that they can use it on this thing, too.
Tell me, i'm using an ipad pro 9.7 inch and a macbook Air. Actually i'd like to change for a macbook pro 13 inch, but now, the surface book 2 makes me hesitate. I'm in buiseness scholarship. So, what would you recommend for note taking, a bit of gaming, a bit of photoshop, videos, etc? a macbook pro or the surface?
I just ordered my surface book 2 13.5" and am currently trying to find all my accessories. I want to confirm that the Herschel sleeves for macbook books are compatible with the device
If you would like something a little more secure for your expensive device, I would suggest the THULE Gauntlet line. The ones made for macbooks fit the surface books fine and I dont have to worry about weight on my laptop
Gepo de Mesa Thank you so much! I’ve always had a cheap $250 P.C. computer until now so never considered these kinds of accessories. I’d been debating between the MBP or MBA but landed on getting the Surface Book 2. I’m so happy with my decision but have found it is much harder to find any advice on accessories for the Surface Book. I’ll check it out for sure!
Absolutely not. The Air and MacBook can barely compare with specs of the lowest end Surface Laptop and Pro, not to mention the Air does not have pen support or touch which are amazing for students. Can you write/draw notes and mark up all your digital documents on a MacBook Air? No.
I don't understand your complaint about the charger: You CAN use the USB-C port for charging. You don't need to use the proprietary charging port. The proprietary charging port is still there to have the 'mag-safe', and for connecting the Microsoft Surface docking station. So actually now you have the best of both worlds.
Loved my original surfacebook....the things are super cool. I ended up returning it for something cheaper at the time, because I couldn't justify the price once I got home. I probably won't ever buy another surface product sadly, because microsoft WAY overpriced them. They're still super sweet though.
Can you still hook this computer up to the TV monitor? I don't see an HDMI port. Considering buying this for 3D modelling and rendering from an architecture and interior design standpoint. Might be good for bringing the tablet around when going out in the field to take measurements or drawing up as-builts and such. Also, I would like to say that your video quality is amazing. Well thought-out in your video editing and shots, really nice work.
@Sai Rahul Kankipati i'd honestly say it depends. Here you can currently get the i7 with 8GB RAM, 256GB of Storage for around 1490€ (without Type cover). Add to that the type cover for 110€ and you're at 1600€ for the Surface Pro. Now if you take the Surface Book 2 with 8GB RAM, 256GB of Storage and the newer 8th Generation i7 you can get it for 1900€. (All those are Amazon prices mind you) But for those 300€ more you also get a dedicated GPU (GTX1050), a larger screen, one of the best Keyboards for 2in1s out there and a way longer battery life. So honestly i'd say it depends on what you want to do and which configuration you want to get because the highest Surface Pro configurations are a bit cheaper but have older hardware (7th Generation CPUs instead of the 8th Generation in the Surface Book 2), less ports and are slightly smaller. Which in my eyes makes the i7 Surface Pro not as good as a value option. If you are fine with an i5 and put more value on portability and don't use your device all day long the Surface Pro is a great choice. If you plan on getting an i7, do more demanding tasks like programming or video editing and plan on using the device even after a long workday on your way home in the bus or on the train i'd say the Surface Book 2 is a better bang for the buck. And yes, i got the Surface Book 2 precisely because of its longer battery life and because of the newer CPU and so far didn't regret it.
Surface Book 2, but I have to know what your major is first and if this would be your only computer? I'd never recommend the MacBook Pro w/ Touch Bar to anyone. The touch bar is a gimmick, and I doubt you will even use it once the novelty wears off. In fact, it may even be annoying, as you'd have to mess around with that small touch screen to control simple things like the brightness of the screen/keyboard. Surface Book 2 has a pen so you can take all your notes on it during class. With OneNote, you can use the rear camera of the Surface Book 2 to take a picture of the whiteboard during class, which will then auto-crop the image and save it with your notes. Surface Book 2 has a WAY BETTER GPU than the MacBook Pro, so it will be a lot more powerful if you do video editing or play any sort of game. Surface Book 2 can also be used as a tablet. *HOWEVER,* If you are not going to be using the tablet mode, surface pen, etc. DO NOT GET THE SB2. You are literally wasting your money in that case. The only reason the surface book costs so much is due to the complex hinge and detachability.
Conservative Developer Hi I'm majoring in STEM. I'll be needing to do a bit of programming and maybe 3D modelling. I'll enroll into college this fall and I'm kind of planning to get into the Apple ecosystem. I like taking notes down by hand so I'm also kind of confused between the iPad + Macbook pro VS the SB2. On one hand, SB2 gets both done in one singke device and saves me some money maybe, but on the apple side there are far more apps and app support (exclusing the fact that SB2 is a full computer but I really love the note taking apps on the iPad specifically. Budget is not an issue for me that much because I saved up a lot for this. I just need to know if it's worth taking a look at Apple's offerings?
Conservative Developer Ah I see. Thanks for the elaborate explanation! Should I be consulting with my college though on what kind of hardware I'll be needing? I've also heard that programming is easier to do on Macs because of its native support. Is it entirely true though?
Md. Faisal Mahmud no question that the surface book is for you, especially since you are doing 3D modeling and STEM based work, the MacBook would not be able to handle that kind of work due to its lack of a proper graphics card
when I was in college MBPros were the best for this, however since Apple wrecked the keyboard in >2016 models its sorta a toss up. If you are doing any language that requires compilation, make sure you get something that is quad core, and you definitely also want at least 16Gb RAM.
I'd get a 15 inch MacBook Pro with i7, 16GB RAM if money is no object. 16GB RAM will allow you to easily use a VM of Windows or any Linux distro. OSX is also very good for programming as you have the UNIX terminal. The laptop will last you at least 5 years, I have a 2011 15" i7 MacBook pro that is still plenty fast. Not to mention OSX is also great for your personal needs as it easily integrates with iOS and has a bunch of nice and useful features. Screen, build quality and customer support of Apple are all excellent.
I'm about to sell my Google Pixelbook and get me the Surface Book 2. I'm sad about leaving the Chromebook ecosystem but I have always had to find work arounds to work with other students and co workers because they use Mac or Windows smh...but I'm looking forward to learning my way around the laptop. I also have a Google Pixel 2 XL for a phone
I will wait for SurfaceBook 3 hopefully it will have a thunderbolt. My reason being. I want a 13-13.5 inch laptop but wanna play games so will buy an external gpu
You have a GTX 1050. That's enough to play games, unless you want high details in native resolution. Or check out the 15 inch model, it has a freaking 1060 inside of it (roughly double the performance). It's not certain whether Microsoft would ever support Thunderbolt 3, as that would be the automatic death of any Surface Connect products like the Surface Dock.
Yes same! I’m an engineering student and I was looking at an iPad (for notability) but I need a more powerful computer and windows in order to run some of the programs I need for labs and programming etc... I was even considering going for an iPad then just building a desktop for gaming mostly but yes if they include the thunderbolt 3 I could have a gaming computer with even more power that I can also use for school! Really looking foreword to the surface book 3!
Hey, Justin! A significant question that comes to my mind: I have been using iPad for a couple of years, and also Macintoshes since 1986. (Word since about '88) If I wanted a portable device to take notes during business meetings, and have an all-around device for making slideshows and other presentations and on-the-road communications, would a Surface Pro '17 or Surface Book 2 work for that? Or would I be better off sticking with iOS? I noticed in this video that the class notes shown were printed, not cursive (longhand handwriting). Do both cursive and printed hardwriting styles work in OneNote and other note-taking apps on Surface products? Or is there a better solution on iPads? I don't know about other folks, but I think the exploration of the various possibilities on both Surface and iOS would make a great stand-alone video. Thanks.
Great review Justin! Isn't the USB-C port on the side certified for both charging and display output, so it can actually be used to charge the surface book 2? Shame that it's not thunderbolt 3 though, but with so much power under the hood anyways, it's not a big loss in my opinion.
I am starting University next year. I am looking at SB2 15'' with 256gb Storage, 16 gb ram, i7. I do light gaming and 1080p video editing. There are rumours of a new gen Surface book coming end of next year. So Is it still worth getting this or should i wait one more year? Please Reply ASAP. Thanks, David
Hey I have the same model you're looking into and its a great machine. The ridiculously great battery life that gets me 10hours of light note typing really takes the cake for me. From what I hear is that IF EVER they do create another one, it probably wont have a better graphics card which is what you need. The Nvidia gtx 2060 isnt even out till next year and you'd typically have to wait another half a year before you see them appear in laptops. Microsoft is even slower than that usually waiting more than a year before putting it in their devices. IF THEY DO release maybe an "updated" version next year, chances are it will be a slightly better CPU and maybe a Thunderbolt 3 port, which, for your use case I doubt you would notice the performance bump. This model handles 4K editing well. Thunderbolt 3 lets you use an external GPU but if you're just doing some light gaming, I say an e-gpu is unnecessary. Ive played Destiny 2, Overwatch, Fortnite and Tomb Raider on this thing and it handles them all on High Settings well. But even then, if you check the rumors on Reddit's /r/Surface, most people say a new model is unlikely for 2019
i recently benchmarked an i-7 8550u in a dell inspiron which is comparable to the i7-8650u in this laptop. Since sketchup is single thread cpu limited, i believe this to be a reasonable comparison to address your question. When compared to a higher wattage cpu like the 7700hq found in gaming notebooks, I found the sketchup interface to be very laggy on the 8550u for files beyond 40mb.
Hey I have the 15" one with i7, 256GB storage, 16GB ram, GTX 1060 and it runs Sketchup and Lumion with zero issues at all. I've rendered 10 minute walkthroughs on it and have been using it with sketchup and lumion for my work every single work day for almost 7 months and it performs just as good or even better than most of the bulky gaming laptops any of my coworkers have. Also assuming you need it for architecture work, the ability to sketch my designs has been amazing and I cant even stress how great its been for meeting up with clients and presentations. Clients love drawing their comments on the screen and being able to hold on to the screen and pinch to zoom their designs. I also use it to sketch my designs, make quick and easy comments , make mock floor plans etc. The battery is actually incredible too, believe it or not it has a more powerful battery than most gaming laptops out there. It lasts me about 6 hours on sketchup and around 3-ish hours when using with lumion. My boss for example uses a seperate laptop and an ipad pro and he wishes he had this instead. The advantage is he can only draw on appstore drawing apps meanwhile I can draw on sketchup and draw on the full photoshop version at the same time. Hope this helps.
Very nice video and informative... But you did spend quite some time talking about Nordon Vpn i understand they're the sponsors but you should have made a bit shorter while talking about the vpn all in all great video quality keep up 👍
great review. I have the 13inch i7, 8gb ram, Nvidia, and am getting only about 4 hours on battery with default balanced power mode, mostly sketching and web browsing. did you make any power saving adjustments? thanks.
Would anyone say that this is a good laptop for a digital artist working primarily in photoshop? I’ve been considering investing in one but that might make or break my choice
I have been using it mainly for that, I would suggest getting the Wacom shortcut remote to make the work flow way faster. Ignore the surface dial unless your using it Sketchable because its amazing and fully supported there.
@MoMonayMoDolla but Wacom mobile studio pro don't have the portability of having keybords ( i know u can but bluetooth keyboard, but it's unconfortable to keep walk out with it ). If he wants to do other things and not only drawing I think the Surface is a nice choice
I think if Microsoft changed the form-factor from this to a regular laptop with a 360 degree hinge it would solve the biggest problems: the gap, the top-heaviness, and the display wobble. (Currently have the Surface Pro 4 and as an engineering student cannot imagine going back to pen and paper.)
I think you didn't get my point: If Microsoft changed the hinge to a 360 degree hinge, all the components could be in the base (like a regular laptop), eliminating the issue of the device being top-heavy.
I actually like the gap.....and don't really have much problems with display wobble because when i use the touchscreen i usually have the device in my hands or oriented in a way that the screen can't wobble anyways. And if not i'm using a pen where the display wobble isn't even noticeable.
Hi Justin, which one is the best for a uni/college student? BOth have same config 512gb, 16 ram, etc. : Razer blade stealth (2018) or XPS 13 (2018)? XPS 13 in Australia is $500 more Thanks, David
Thank you so much for that review. I will be getting that laptop, after seeing it in the electronics department. What is the name of that music you played at the beginning of the video, it is really good.
I like my surface book 2 but it's not been the fastest computer in the whole world. Not sure if it's windows or just the laptop? Tried everything so hopefully they fix it. It also makes hissing noises when plugging in something with a usb and if you turn the brightness up on the keyboard.
I stepped on that hinge. I weight 180. Didn't press my whole wait I jumped off when I realized I was stepping on my computer. Point is, the hinge is not and has never been a durability issue.

Yeah , It's a unique feature of Microsoft Surface book 2

Its Magnesium not Aluminium
You deserve way more subscribers. Just 5 secs in and the cinematography and shot planning is out of this world. Nice Job!

Saw it in person and the 15 inch is huuuuge. Really no excuse to not build minimal bezels as it's as wide as a truck.

True, and magnesium is more expensive than aluminium.
And stronger, luckily :)
I've got to say, ur thumbnails are impossible to resist!
I have got the 15 inch version, and I loveeeee it, just amazing, not perfect but lovely 😍
Microsoft has done great job at hinge area something different and seems more durable than normal hinge 😍 Background music nailed it, once again amazing review great bro.

Guessing your MacBook charger is too smaller wattage. I have used an aftermarket charger but shut down to charge and it works fast.

What's the benefit of USB-C for charging over proprietary?
He got this wrong, you CAN use the usb c for charging. i do it all the time!
Does it have an a numeric keypad? you never explained this in your video. Where the track pad is? thanks.
Thanks.
Best laptop for professionals in tech
Great review Justin! Isn't the USB-C port on the side certified for both charging and display output, so it can actually be used to charge the surface book 2? Shame that it's not thunderbolt 3 though, but with so much power under the hood anyways, it's not a big loss in my opinion.
Is there a reason you use tablet mode instead of desktop mode?
Seth Arvila for artists its a gr8 way to use it as a tablet
The SB2 does charge over USB-C, just slower.
Yes my mistake, when I tried it using a MacBook charger it was charging so slow I thought it was not supported!
The MacBook Pro charger is only 87W and that’s why it was charging so slow I guess.
Thanks,
David
But even then, if you check the rumors on Reddit's /r/Surface, most people say a new model is unlikely for 2019
Hey Justin what is your daily laptop?
Damn jealous of those accounting notes. Mine were so bad when I was taking managerial lmfao.
Do you think i can run Sketchup models and Lumion on it?
Amandaxxcastilho for 2500 bucks you should run a triathlon on it
i have the surface pro (almost the same thing) and with the pen this would be a pretty good devise for that
i recently benchmarked an i-7 8550u in a dell inspiron which is comparable to the i7-8650u in this laptop. Since sketchup is single thread cpu limited, i believe this to be a reasonable comparison to address your question. When compared to a higher wattage cpu like the 7700hq found in gaming notebooks, I found the sketchup interface to be very laggy on the 8550u for files beyond 40mb.
Amandaxxcastilho should run smooth on the 15 inch it has a 1060 and 8th gen i7
Hey I have the 15" one with i7, 256GB storage, 16GB ram, GTX 1060 and it runs Sketchup and Lumion with zero issues at all. Hope this helps.
but you CAN charge via the usb c...
Would you consider doing a review on a chromebook... say the best one for the money, and good all rounder?
This device can actually be charged from USB-C port too, if you have a compatible charger for it.
Very nice video and informative... But you did spend quite some time talking about Nordon Vpn i understand they're the sponsors but you should have made a bit shorter while talking about the vpn all in all great video quality keep up 👍
What is the name of the instrumental in the beginning of the video
jaliyah sutton Ganja ooy
best
laptop
ever
this beats macbook finally
great review. I have the 13inch i7, 8gb ram, Nvidia, and am getting only about 4 hours on battery with default balanced power mode, mostly sketching and web browsing. did you make any power saving adjustments? thanks.
gnoob2gnoob are you updated on the latest firmware from Microsoft
What app did you use for note taking?
Would anyone say that this is a good laptop for a digital artist working primarily in photoshop? I’ve been considering investing in one but that might make or break my choice
It is.
it is
I have been using it mainly for that, I would suggest getting the Wacom shortcut remote to make the work flow way faster.
The material is a Magnesium alloy not Aluminium which is harder to scratch than Aluminium.
XPS 13 in Australia is $500 more
Thanks,
David
Damn this video is freeeesh!
Are you aware of wifi connection/disconnection issues
Sir you my bast hero i love your video sir
Hey Justin, what app did you use in the video to draw the graphs? Thanks.
I’m at bestbuy right now I can’t decide between this or a MacBook Pro please answer fast
Hey, the USBC port let's you charge.
Abhishek Harge yes
Thank you so much for that review. I will be getting that laptop, after seeing it in the electronics department. What is the name of that music you played at the beginning of the video, it is really good.
where did you get the bag from?
is this laptop good for architectures? 😊
Do you prefer this surfacebook2 or a macbook pro 2018
What about reliability of windows comparing to mac os on long time?
Justin can you release your Spotify playlist to the public? Would be awesome
it’s an embarrassment haha
Justin Tse nah cmon justin. Mine isn't better. Imbrase it lol
Justin Tse you know that your account is public right? The one with wake up playlist
Thought you could charge via USB C?
I love your videos!! Also, what are you studying at uni?
Is that supreme wallet legit ? I need that too, only found regular but not card only wallets so far
I like my surface book 2 but it's not been the fastest computer in the whole world. Not sure if it's windows or just the laptop? Tried everything so hopefully they fix it. It also makes hissing noises when plugging in something with a usb and if you turn the brightness up on the keyboard.
you know you can charge the surface book 2 with the USBC right ? it's just slower than the normal charging port hha
I stepped on that hinge. I weight 180. Didn't press my whole wait I jumped off when I realized I was stepping on my computer. Point is, the hinge is not and has never been a durability issue.
