Adding Pizzazz to Woodturning with Texturing - Part 1

- In "Adding Pizzazz to Woodturning with Texturing - Part 1," I compare and contrast the large and micro Sorby Spiraling and Texturing tools and demonstrate how to quickly add embellishments to various turning projects such as bowls and boxes and more. Texturing can increase the tactile and visual appeal of woodturnings. I end with a slide show of textured projects.

Beautiful work Mke.
Many thanks!
Very nice. I just got a new lathe and My wife came in while I was watching and said I can't have any more toys for the rest of the month.
I hear you. Looks like you need to make her something nice - soon. Before she sees the bill for the next toy. Use cash so there is not audit trail, LOL.
Thank's mike clad you liked my youtube all the best brad.
Thanks for sharing those tips Mike. I guess it would help to just experiment a little until you find something that you like? You are a good teacher and know what pupils need instead of just giving out useless information.
God Bless my friend.
I think you have to experiment with texturing. It gives you the confidence to apply it to an almost finished turning.
The Sorby Texturing tool looks just like a small chain sprocket. Betcha we could make one that would work just fine. They are a bit pricey if bought pre-made. Thanks for the series Mike. Texturing is very little work but can really add a lot to a piece.
I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. Great stuff! Thank you!
That is the plan. Glad it is working. Safe turning.
My mini Sorby spiraling tool just came in today. Anxious to see how it works.
You will enjoy it! Probably works best on wood that is not too green.
@@MikePeaceWoodturning Have you thought any more and doing a bottle stopped video? I'm thinking of texturing the tops of a few.
@@bradbyers7505 It is definitely on my to do list.
A great demonstration Mike, looking forward to this tutorial series.
Take care
Mike
I have been thinking of trying this for a while now but after watching this video I am definitely going to get started. A first class presentation and one of the best I have seen, with lots of useful tips. Great work.
Thanks for that feedback. It is not hard but a fun thing to play with.
Thank you Mike for sharing. I really like using those tools on my turnings.
They are fun.
Good video, Mike!
Thanks for sharing M. Mike. Those pictures at the end are awsome. Marc
Thanks. I guess when you are a hammer everything looks like a nail. You can texture a lot of different turnings.
Mike, thanks for the great info! Cheers, Rich
Glad you enjoyed it.
thanks Mike that was very interesting
It is fun too!
Great video Mike. I picked up a Sorby texturing and spiralling kit off eBay recently and you have inspired me to try a few things. Cheers, Jim
Have fun with it!
thanks for the lesson interesting about the large and small size tools
Glad you enjoyed it. I hope it makes any purchasing decision easier. Safe turning.
So many things i want to try one day ;)
Don't delay. Start today.
I like the symmetrical patterns better myself. Did I understand correctly that the lathe speed determines that or is the diameter of the wood verses the wheel? By the way I sent a private message on anther subject.
Not the speed , although excess speed can make the tool harder to control. Clean spirals require the diameter to be evenly divisible by the distance between two adjacent teeth. Else there will be an overalpping cut leading to what I call striation.
Have you tried to calculate the perfect diameters or do you rely on luck?
