    7:38 Sam challenges himself to throw a spear and completely botches it. Without a second thought blames himself rather than the game. *This is the caliber of software VR has been waiting for*

    • @MapleLeafAce
      @MapleLeafAce 5 років тому +1

      Henry Munnich not really. It’s still the fault of the software. A real spear can be thrown properly because of its mass and momentum. You won’t be able to throw a spear in VR properly ever because it has no mass or momentum in there.

    • @henrymunnich1648
      @henrymunnich1648 5 років тому +12

      @@MapleLeafAce Its funny you say that its the software's fault and then immediately go into the limitations of VR as a platform, implying that its not the fault of the software. Perfect realism could be nice but thats not what I was talking about. Clunky, unintuitive, and inconsistent physics are the standard for current VR games, and a physics engine without those caveats is genuinely what a lot of people have been waiting for to invest in VR. Its also interesting you mention mass and momentum because those are specifically what Brandon's team is focusing on emulating.

      As great as this looks today, it's still the tip of the iceberg. Boneworks is kind of like DOOM in the 90s. An FPS that (hopefully) cracks a formula, but is still evolved upon massively over the years to come, just like how games like Rainbow Six Seige and well, Half Life 1+2 came after DOOM. It's likely that VR games will evolve much more than gaming did from the 90s to the 2010s even, because there's much more freedom and more room for new inputs. I'm sorry, all I see are other comments gushing about it, butwhat is so impressive about this game?
      The main thing I got from the video was that the knuckles controllers are what makes the throwing so realistic. What they showed off is slow-motion H3VR with more melee and balloons and every time they held two-handed guns the left wrist was broken in such a horrible way I'm surprised Brandon was happy showing this off.
      I did like the crowbar physics holding and sliding the hands, and pulling the box to see whats in it, but this doesnt seem like a jump to "NEXT GEN VR"
      "Its really refreshing to see VR games done correctly" was commented in this video, they really are highlighting how biased they are.

      @@ItsLeeMcGuire How about the fact that it solves a lot of the mechanics and haptic feedback issues associated with VR in one go? You obviously haven't a clue at how hard this things are to solve, especially stuff that might seem mundane, such as how the arm realistically twists and bends to your movement. There's a reason why most VR games to date have had to use disembodied hands just to bypass this issue. Now its solved. Other stuff like accurate physical interaction with the game world and objects, and the amount of physics involved in that is like nothing Ive seen in any other VR game, or any game ever made for that matter, and is something only possible in VR. When computer games first started being developed, the fundamentals like controles and certain mechanics associated with them that we take for granted today, had to start from somewhere. It's akin to when we all had a 8 way direction D-pad to control our characters with. When devs jumped from that to 360 degree analogue, it presented an entirely new challenge for them to circumvent, and now, again, we just take it for granted. This is what Brandan has done with these controllers, and the leap and what is possible from them will only be apparent in new games that make specific use of them. If you don't think this is impressive, then you don't know what you are looking at.

The only thing we didn’t predict was exactly how bad the story would be. And game companies show the best content at conferences, that should be obvious. Just don't get vr for playstation, it sucks let me tell you. It relies on the playstation move camera, to track lights from move controllers, it is very unreliable. The move controller lights will not just reflect off reflective surfaces (so it's not just games and movies you need to hide), but white surfaces as well. Seeing light in the corner of your eye ruins immersion, but playing in a dark room only makes it worse. You also need to remove anything from the cameras view, that have similar colours as the light that is emitted from the headset or move controllers. My advice as a hardcore gamer of different genres. Pay more for a more reliable vr system on PC with a much wider range of games. If you need to try PSVR, only buy it on sale!

    • @masterninjaworrior
      @masterninjaworrior 5 років тому +13

      Lee McGuire To understand this you must venture into VR games that are similar to what this like Pavlov and pretty much any game in general. What they are showing is very details mechanics that are very realistic and reminiscent of real life, making the user feel like they are in the game without breaking immersion through faulty physics and unnatural interactions within the world. It is a compiled laboratory of different mechanics of VR in one game that is heavily modified and polished to where our natural actions are reflected realistically within the game, without having to adjust to the VR world. Node is not biased, because no one has experienced this level of realness within VR before so they are blown away and delighted at the achieved advancement. Overall, it's revolutionary none the less. Please take my world for it.

      A lot of what we see is already in other games, blade and sorcery has very similar melee physics & the ways you position hands, i think they have by the looks of it took it a step further with the help of the knuckles & brought lots of things together in a thoughtful way & added some new stuff. Creativity is afteral a synthesis of ideas. I do think there is a bit too much hype maybe but that could be justified when we finally get to try it. I'm looking forward to hear some more about it either way & i'm far more enthusiastic about knuckles after watching this.

Any step beyond that needed to be either a huge machine (that kinda already exists) or literally something out of science fiction where your real body sleeps but your mind is transferred into a virtual world. I don't think it's impossible, theoretically the hardest part is translating your brain into binary or whatever put it into a machine and take it back out safely. Shooting games are the same, targets in front of you more than 100m is just a pixel and don't even get me started on trying to read text far away. We’re coming up on 3 years since this, and their development philosophy about everything needing to interact with physics, and having a body the player can see, and the controller being necessary as a proxy for the held object is still the best vision for VR there is. Don’t get me wrong, non physics games and games without full bodies can be fun, and haptic gloves are cool, but reliably producing VR games that feel visceral and real is hard, and they’ve cracked the code on the necessary elements.
