MASKED LAPWING parents warded off eagle attack, endured arduous nesting conditions

Warding off an impending Changeable Hawk-eagle attack required a team effort, as both parents took to the air to
defend their eggs from the eagle. With fierce screeching & swift swooping, they won their aerial duel with the eagle.
Interestingly, one parent immediately hurried to the unattended eggs & took to shielding the latter from the scorching sun. It half-squatted over the eggs for about 10 min, before resuming the usual brooding. This was possibly an effort to prevent over- heating, as the eggs had been left in the open when both parents took to the skies.
Masked Lapwings are local to Australia. The population has now established itself in Singapore, apparently due to escapee(s) a long time ago.
