Thanks for the review, Jeremy. The short film is well done and it's easy to see how that would be the first scene in a horror film. Sounds like the remainder of the film though didn't work and that's unfortunate. Seems to be a common theme these days, good premise, but poorly executed. As for good horror films that got released in January, here are some of my favorites: The Relic (1997), Deep Rising (1998), Cloverfield (2008), My Bloody Valentine (2009), Season Of The Witch (2011), Split (2017), and Underwater (2020). Not all classics, but fun nonetheless.
Regarding the cat, I was really sad, but the way it's done I think it's actually not a stretch to come up with a headcanon that the cat was able to escape and just got freaked out and never came back. They didn't show him get grabbed or anything, and he didn't make sounds of anguish (thankfully... LOL
Did the girl playing Marco Polo needed a line where she's like "Why can't I open my eyes?" And maybe she's trying to swim out of the pool, but we either see that she's going nowhere despite swimming or that the pool is all of a sudden infinite. Or if they really wanted to be clever, we see it as a top down perspective and zoomed in enough that we see her swimming and the tiles under her moving as she's screaming that she can't open her eyes and the audience realizes that she definitely should have reached the end of the pool by now
When I saw the Marco Polo scene in the trailer I was like surely this is cut together in the trailer and she’s not actually just keeping her eyes closed. Apparently not lol

I don't know if there is anything come out in theaters this January I feel I have to go see. I think the next big movie I'll see in the theater is probably Argylle in February.
Yup, I guarantee this was one of those Blumhouse cash grab releases in January. Speaking of which I went and seen the horror movie called Founders Day for Regal Monday Movie Mystery and it’s was stupid and god awful.
When the entity’s lore was explained, I immediately pointed out a plot hole, lol. Can’t fault the actors in this one, but can easily fault the writers. Editing is a good tip for better writing.
@@meghanmisaliar The lore explained in the movie is that the entity required a sacrifice. It was not explained what kind of sacrifice. The entity killed the family cat. The sacrifice has been made. Targeting the family is pointless.
Spoilers I thought the cat dying serves the purpose of the son experiencing loss which is what makes him a target. The random kid nearly drowning as the son watches reflects the sons desire to bond with his father and feeling resentful because he can’t bond with his dad over baseball. He finally snaps out of it. The movie has a good message in the end. I’m honestly at a loss why people are so offended. A movie doesn’t have to try hard to be decent. Sometimes a movie like this can act as a palette cleanser after watching so many art house films that are automatically given a pass.
No one is “offended” and not everyone likes art house films. You assuming people are pretentious is more pretentious. A movie should try to be good. If it is clear no one is teying then it is just ancash grab
Padding the runtime and ripping scenes off from better movies is what PG-13 supernatural Horror films do. It's hard to make an effective one when you're limited with how much violence you can show, so I often wonder why people even try anymore. 1408 and Drag Me To Hell are two of the few examples I can think of that kept me entertained throughout.
Hands down the best January horror film I've seen to date is the excellent 2009 remake My Bloody Valentine 3-D. That movie surprised the hell out of me in all the best ways. I'm a huge fan of the 1981 original, so I was surprised to discover I enjoyed the remake just as much. They released it on January 16th, 2009. I'm pretty sure that was to avoid competing with the then impending release of the Friday the 13th reboot.

Must have not seen that episode because as a kid snick at night was a staple every friday night would have friends over or id be over at a friends house and we would watch global guts, legends of the hidden temple, salute your shorts, and are you afraid of the dark (crazy to think Ryan Gosling was in that) but man I miss those days, and some of the short stories in that show were truly terrifying.
Jeremy said it's based on a short, pay attention. The only similarity to the Are You Afraid of the Dark? episode is a pool monster.
No it’s not, this movie night swim is based off the short film also called night swim. Who would’ve thought
That is **incorrect**. This is based on the same director’s short film from a few years ago.
Infinity Pool was one of my favorites last year.
Mr Jeremy Jahns. Could you review The Holdovers please 🙏🏾
It's not out here till the end of January here in UK and I'd love to know your thoughts and review on it.
I admire Jeremy for still trying to see positive things in every 💩movie.
Thank you Jeremy for providing a public service and doing it with humor.
You described it perfectly. I struggled to stay engaged but it was bad enough I kept watching waiting for it to get better 😂
I don't know if there is anything come out in theaters this January I feel I have to go see. I think the next big movie I'll see in the theater is probably Argylle in February.
The Book of Clarence looks great.
Who ever directed this movie needs to be fired from doing horror movies. I can make a better horror movie......I want mi money back!
Yup, I guarantee this was one of those Blumhouse cash grab releases in January. Speaking of which I went and seen the horror movie called Founders Day for Regal Monday Movie Mystery and it’s was stupid and god awful.
We have to tune in to the first review of the year!
When the entity’s lore was explained, I immediately pointed out a plot hole, lol.
Can’t fault the actors in this one, but can easily fault the writers. Editing is a good tip for better writing.
Which plot hole?
@@meghanmisaliar The lore explained in the movie is that the entity required a sacrifice. It was not explained what kind of sacrifice.
The entity killed the family cat. The sacrifice has been made. Targeting the family is pointless.
Eh. I'll just rewatch Poor Things 😅
Welp....guess Mthreegan didnt break the curse hard enough
Ah good, I'm not the only one who was getting "let's lead off the unexpected success of M3GAN" vibes.
"The Relic" has grown on me over the years. Enjoyed the book. Could barely see the movie in the theater, but I like a good dumb monster movie.
I feel like I've commented this before, but I would totally watch long formed content of yours like video essays or a podcast
Spoilers
I thought the cat dying serves the purpose of the son experiencing loss which is what makes him a target.
I can hear my daughter telling me " Dad! What is this crap, I'm gone" lol
Im not surprised I saw the poster of this film and I was unsure about it. Are you going to do a review of Past Lives??
Dude...do a review on society of the snow, best thing I've seen in a while
Jeremy, you should give "Mayhem!" a watch this weekend! It comes out on Prime and will be in select theaters. Made by the same dude who did Gangs of London.
I love when Jeremy's thumbnail pic says it all
I saw a more terrifying clip of a baby alligator jumping into a backyard pool while a couple was using it. This movie looked like it had nothing to offer
“Founders Day” was surprisingly enjoyable. Saw it Monday. Comes out the 19th.
You should do a review for 'Next Goal Wins'. I've just seen it, i'm interested to hear what you think.
Reminded me of a GooseBumps/Are You Afraid of the Dark segment
I'm so happy to see January hasn't changed
Are you reviewing La sociedad de la nieve?
Great review bro
This is one of those movies that was built on someone coming up with the name first. 🤣🤣
NOW the year can start. If Jeremy has a top 10 snooze list this year, this will end up on it.
Just got out of the theatre and I agree with all of your points, including the pool guy and realtor 🤣
Literally just got home from seeing this movie and yes everything he says is true lol. The majority of the audience and myself were laughing towards the end it was like being at a screening of The Room honestly.
Please review Society of the Snow!
Hey Jeremy! I’ve been watching your reviews pretty much since you started your channel. Thanks for all the hard work 🙏! I was wondering, and just like others are mentioning, it’s not been the strongest cinema year… if you would consider reviewing some smaller or indie movies as well. For example Past Lives has been the best film i’ve seen last year, and it would be amazing to see you review it :) thanks and keep up to good work!
