- Another day, another Star Wars controversy. This time its Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy the director of the new Star Wars movie about nobody's favourite character Rey, declaring its about time women were allowed to tell the story of Star Wars. Needless to say, it didn't go down well.

The restaurant analogy.
You purchase a popular, long running restaurant franchise with solid theme bult up over decades and a solid customer base who loving remember going there as children. The menu is based on tasty comfort food and big portions. As the new owner you have a dream to make people change their eating habits. You begin to add to the menu new items not in line with the old menu. They are healthy, small portion items that tick all the right buzz words. Vegan, sustainable, ethical, gluten free and low calorie. But are ultimately tasteless, unfulfilling and unmemorable. To promote the new menu items, you begin to diminish and remove old fan favourites. You begin to lose money and cop bad reviews. In addition, some of the real die-hard fans of the restaurant take to social media and really stick it to you. Rather than understanding your customer base you fight back, calling them toxic and double down on your new menu as well as hiring long standing activists and promoters of ethical food to manage your franchise. At this point the entirety of the fan base is looking on with disbelief and shear bewilderment at what you are serving up. Yes, the logo is there, the familiar music and decor. But the food has completely disconnected from what they remember. In disappointment they quietly leave. Eventually you go broke.
You should be grateful to this woman.

At this point I think that's the whole plan. Disney is wanting a PR acceptable out from their social justice bent. So they chose the absolute worst person to run the show on the worst character for all the social justice points BECAUSE it will crash and burn and lose so much money. So they can point at it to the media and shareholders as the reason they abandon the message. Thank you for clearing that up. It's definitely not fair that she's being criticized for saying she "likes to make men uncomfortable" if she was talking about murderers. She was taken out of context.
As for Star Wars in my opinion having a female director isn't a bad thing, where Disney went wrong was DESTROYING the Skywalker/Solo family. The fans would not have a problem with female protagonists or a female director because female influence is not unheard of in Star Wars. What fans were ultimately angry about was the new films destruction of legacy characters and message of hope the original trilogy had.
She was speaking at WEF, that's enough for me to walk away.

Why was she talking about making men uncomfortable at an economic forum, though? 💀
As a woman I can't even talk about new star wars without getting angry more angry than my husband. He hates bringing up the topic because I get heated, I start yelling. I love star wars, grew up on stars wars. My daddy took me to see star wars as a very little girl barely old enough to enjoy a non Disney movie because he knew I would love it. I grew up with bad ass space princess Leia as my hero. This crap they have done with star wars just makes me well angry. its insulting to men and women as well as just bad story telling. Star wars was for everyone it was big, epic and made a little girl like me dream of flying a spaceship and fighting with swords. I never felt like I wasn't part of star wars or that star wars wasn't for me as a girl because I knew it was for me, Its for everyone. saying star wars needs a woman director or writer for me to enjoy it is just insulting. The director or writer needs to be passionate about the topic no matter what they identify as, that doesn't matter and it shouldn't matter especially for a film about a galaxy far far away.

- Disney, 2024
Without Marcia Lucas, Star Wars would have been another footnote in the history of film. A handful of people would have gone to see it in May of '77, then by June it would have been pulled from theaters and George would have gone and done something else. There would be no Episode V, much less the prequels, EU, and whatever has happened since Disney bought it.

Each Disney flop feels like another adaptation of "The Producers." They had a scam where they collected investor money based upon promises of payouts based on the film's success. Then they intentionally got a pro-hitler (Springtime for Hitler in Germany song) Director, with the intention of producing a flop. But unlike that film, these films are not a success.
So who keeps throwing billions in investments for these flops?

@@susivarga7303 Yes, people always, ALWAYS say that "In theory no, not every one of these movies that HAS to feature a woman replacing a male character, or directing, or writing, or producing, etc is going to be bad" yes, yes it is. They all fit a specific mold. This movie's going to have at least one scene where the female characters lambast the male characters or just outright demean, emasculate, overpower, outperform, and/or make fools of them, on the basis of nothing other than 'because we are female and you are men'. They do it every single time, without fail, and people will just say "I-it wasn't THAT bad" because they don't want to anger the twitter mob.
The fact that people see these scenes now and just expect them and accept them and say "Well aside from the (woke crap) this tv show/movie wasn't TOO bad" as opposed to rightfully criticizing them ten years ago, is not a sign that these movies are getting better. It's a sign that the tired and desperate Marvel and Disney fandoms are completely beaten down to the point where they'll accept anything as long as it's more content which means their favorite franchise isn't quite COMPLETELY dead yet... Whenever I hear stuff like this, my first thought goes to Marcia Lucas. She was there from the very beginning of Star Wars and was just as instrumental as George in helping it come to life. So when people say that a woman is finally coming in to help make Star Wars stuff, I always think to myself, "Women have been there since the beginning. What are you talking about?"
There is a detail about women: women don't care about other women, they only care about themselves. Not all women are like that, but there are also a lot of them like that 😂
I'd go further than that. Star Wars would've been a complete disaster without it being saved in the editing room, and Marcia is primarily responsible for that. If nothing else it shows how shallow and insincere Disney is. They don't actually care about women and their contributions, they only care about patting themselves on the back.
She wasn’t the “right” woman
The fact that she doesn't seem to acknowledge what other women have done with Star Wars doesn't really show that she has a great interest in the franchise. Has she even watched the movies? Is she going to hire Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman as completely new characters or something like that?
Leigh Brackett had a major role in the script for Empire Strikes Back. Sadly, she died after turning the script in.
Im a major star wars fan and a girl. I have never felt so alienated by a fandom that keeps screaming it represents me. Padme, Ahsoka, Leia, Ventress, Luminara Unduli, etc. These characters meant so much to me growing up. They know they exist in a patriarchal world, yet these women overcome this obstacle through incredible hard work and sacrifice to become the amazing characters they are. In our world, like in star wars, misogyny and sexualisation exist (hello, Leia in a bikini as a major sex symbol). Pretending it doesnt exist OR screaming about it DOES NOT SPEAK TO YOUR FEMALE FANS. The characters I mentioned before are far more representative of women's struggles both in their galaxy and our own. Padmé even inspired me to get into politics. Rey earns her status through no hard work, no sacrifice, and her bloodline. These feminist executives spit in the face of feminism. It is literally embarrassing to be a star wars fan today.
You're lying about politics and whining about the rest...oh, and Leah in a space bikini was hot...
@@brianbender6369 what are you saying exactly?
Something they don't consider too, just because you're a woman it doesn't mean you don't relate to men, just like me being black does not mean I feel represented by blacks only. I feel more represented by Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop the anime which is written by a Asian Japanese man and the character is a Jewish Bounty Hunter who does Martial Arts in outer space. Your gender or skin color is not the only thing that makes you, you and that's what these people are always boiling it down to. I'm 35, but growing up I did not care or ask for black representation.
There were always black characters around and I liked some and not others, but I didn't feel represented by black characters just because they were black. My favorite Super hero is the Flash. Some of my favorite characters are Blade, Static Shock, The flash, Gohan, Spike, Luke Skywalker, Vash, Kenshin Himura, L from Death note, Edward Full Metal Alchemist, Bit Cloud, Sly From Sly Cooper, if I made a list it would be huge and it would include some women too. Some are black, white, Asian, animal-humanoids, Aliens, Half Alien Human Hybrids, male female, robots, androids, it don't matter. And as far as living in a Patriarchal world....that's the default of reality and nobody really cared until recent human history and there's been instances of matriarchies in human history both good and bad that have committed atrocities too so it's not like it matters if the scene is patriarchal or matriarchal. So anyone pushing these ideals are wrong and foolish.

Excellent video analysis
I have Autism and am questioning why someone on the spectrum hasn't directed a Star Wars film in 2024. Let's make this happen!
Like I said before.. there were thousands of hours of literature, graphic novels and video games that had built the lore of Star Wars before Disney took over and Disney didn’t just cast it into a ditch, they’ve tried to pave right over it and make everything we loved disappear. They don’t have any passion for it, only dollar signs in their eyes. Jon Favreau had passion with The Mandalorian at least, but Disney as a corporation is just in it for the money, and has sucked the life out of the franchise. It’s disgusting.
Not to mention that George Lucas actually had some ideas for the sequel, one of which involved Maul and Talon being the villains, and Disney completely scrapped them to make their own dumb trilogy.
wise words from the man himself - Bob Ross!
I get the sentiment but I believe the reality is a bit more complex than saying "Disney as a corporation is evil and greedy" I mean a corporation can't be greedy because a corporation isn't a conscious entity. But of course it consists of many people who are conscious. And sure there might be greedy people among them. But I'm also sure even those people are aware that the best way to make more money is to deliver a product their costumers will enjoy. And they probably each have their own ideas about what that would entail. But of course nobody knows upfront what will or won't be successful.
Each person is a cog in the machine and they all need to need to make sure the machine keeps running. So of course they need to make a lot of money. You don't want to be the one responsible for the decline of a multi billion dollar company with over 200.000 employees.
The problem is the same as always. Disney is run by humans. And humans are fallible and have (in a general sense) no idea what they are doing most of the time. But that is a problem we have in all layers of society, not just Hollywood.
So Disney = evil? Idk, I get the feeling they are just trying to survive, just like most of us.
@@Djoarhet001 So why do they keep making the same mistakes over and over. Being Human means learning from mistakes, not doing the same thing over and expecting a different outcome.

I'm becoming convinced that they simply want to destroy the things we love. It's like watching a toddler build a block tower only for his jealous little sister coming along and knocking it over for no reason.
I mean it's true. And the reason you mentioned also might be very true. Those weirdos gained some power in life and they do enjoy to "payback" to the whole world, because they are miserable. She only got hired because of her filthy rich and well connected family, who are all WEF members.
Look her up, husband is CEO of Pakistan Cable ( the biggest telecoms company over there), her family owns various factories, mother is in the Panama Papers and various family members are embedded in the Pakistani government, running NGO´s and what not.
I love how despite seeing the negative response to the sequel trilogy by fans, Disney still said, “I know what fans want! They want another Rey movie!”
I don't think they look beyond the Box office collection data.

I saw an old vid of mark Hamill and that jerk who directed _The Last Jedi_ the other day, and Hamill (probably in defiance of his orders) was kindly giving fans the heads-up. "So I said to Ryan, we should give fans what they want," Hamill said. "And he said to me, 'No. We give them what WE want, and they'll learn to accept it.'"
And THAT should tell you the story here, the entire meaning of Disney SW.
i’m of the firm belief everyone should be respected and treated as human but they should also be employed in their merits, no one (normal) has any issue with a woman directing star wars, it’s because she was out there BECAUSE she’s a woman not that she’s an amazing director i couldn’t care less who directs it if they’re a great director
"I am an accidental film director, i have never been to film school"
Props to you Drinker, for clarifying her quote. We need truth.
As far as the "outrage" goes, it's really more apathy. The life long fans aren't frothing at the mouth with rage. They're shrugging their shoulders in indifference.

This is the truth. Your average guy isn't a rabid angry fanboy, just someone who's disappointed and hoping for better.
This is the type of perspective and objectiveness that separates drinker from anti-woke rabble rousers.
I feel about Star Wars the way I feel about a second season of Rings Of Power. It’s not even enough to bitch about them anymore. I just don’t care and have zero desire to see them. The notorious “high speed” chase scene in BOBF broke me, and I don’t think it will ever be repaired.
I've ever only watched the first 3 ... oh wait. My sister cragged me with her kids to watch the one about finding Annekin as a kid. Anyhow I was happy with the first 3, didn't believe anything in the Annekin one, and came out enraged about the acceptance of slavery.
Don't "buy" his mother, just take her on board and GO!
She should cast Rachel Zegler, Amber Heard and Halle Bailey. That would be awesome.

You left out Jada.
Jada could be the empress of dark side, and Zegler as her disciple! 😂
I would certainly be in awe.
Couple points:
1. I appreciate the good faith in putting the director’s old comments in the proper context. There’s already a lot wrong with this choice of director, to say nothing of this movie in general, without making shit up.
2. Is Patty Jenkins just a joke to them???
That's why I watch them free online, in sites that won't give them any feedback.

What I don't understand is why you would give them such a huge franchise to screw up instead of letting them cut their teeth on smaller projects and proving themselves capable of not crashing your flagship product?
And the fact that she is an activist and hates men.. that’s what they are really going for
Why can’t Takashi Yamazaki direct a Star Wars movie, you’ll become the first Japanese Star Wars film director. He made Godzilla Minus One and said that Star Wars is what got him into filmmaking. He’s truly a huge fan and said countless times that he wants to direct a Star Wars movie
When the writers hate the material and men in general, it doesn't matter if the director is passionate about the franchise.
Because Japanese filmmaking is so different from western, it will be hard to understand from the get-go for people not familiar with Japan and their culture and mentality.

Disney never fails to disappoint! This movie is a guaranteed flop before they even start shooting… That might be a record
I'm a person who identifies as a Mi24-D Gunship and Gunships never directed a Star Wars movie. It's 2024, we can do better, the time is now.
I distinctly remember when Aliens was released and how much I admired Sigourney Weaver's role as Ellen Ripley.
It had ZERO do to with gender agenda, politics or propaganda.
Story and performance are absolutely everything.
Ah, the era when Women in movies actually meant something.
It's literally just become "we want women in movies because we hate men - even at the expense of the story!"
I think it had to do, given it was ridley scott, but that it wasnt a society focus at the time so it didnt feel forced
Totally, it's amazing to think that we had such movies and no propaganda along them... But back then these heroes were flawed, they made mistakes, they were written. I'm very curious to know if any of these modern day writers and producers were questioned about these older movies with lead women...
Nope, as long as disney can, they will always blame bad reviews on sexism. “Oh you didn’t like this character because she has a shitty personality, virtually no background information, and no character development? Must be because she’s a girl”
Exactly this! It's flat out disrespectful to women who have worked their tales off in Hollywood for (checks notes) since Hollywood's beginning.
They try to pretend that women have never done anything in Hollywood before to push their narrative.
I'm glad you mentioned what a slap in the face a diversity hire can be to the the people who have spent their careers trying to claw their way to the top the hard way
IMO it is root cause of so manty the problems we have today. I am fine with diversity and inclusivity but when meritocracy takes a back seat, nothing good will come from it.
Yes and to change an established characters race is also crap. Why not create an awesome original new character that is say other than white. Right?
I would love to see Dave Filoni directing the new star wars. In his animated series I really feel that Star Wars footprint. On top of that he has huge respect for the canon work done so far.
You should do a poll to see how many people will see it
Much respect to you for giving context to the older clips and serving a reminder as to why we should remain 'critical' when viewing some rage-fodder.
this is exactly why i watch the critical drinker and not many others that get cheap shots into this and similar things. Sometimes others hate just to hate, however critical drinker shows understanding and can separate different things. My hats off to critical drinker.
@naveerakhan9622 Except that in one of those clips she was talking to Jon Stewart (not NPR or BBC or some contextually-appropriate outlet) about "making men uncomfortable". That wasn't directed just at [subset that supports bad thing], it was directed at western men who would be watching.
@carruthers100 If someone says with their own mouth in public that they have a personal issue with the target demographic of your project, then yes, I'd say it is related.
The fact that she wasn't talking about directing Star Wars at that time is beside the point.
The fact that she has connections with Hillary Clinton and the WEF just doesn't sit right at all with me....
I agree. Theres plenty to point out why the new star wars sucks, but her work targeting real abusive men in Pakistan is commendable. Theres nuance to this situation.
As a black man, all Disney will allow me to say is, “Rey! Rey!!! Reeeeeyyyyy!!!!!”

Meanwhile that movie about Lando, one of the coolest star wars character, that everyone love and everyone want to see more about got it's production stopped. Probably because it didnt made any racial controversy which they can jerk over
The sneak peak led us to believe Finn would be the protagonist, and he immediately gets sidelined and characterized as a goofball with puppy love.

Good work drinker! I think the reason why for a female director is that Disney is trying squeeze out a few more dollars and a female director gives them some free publicity, for example this video right here.
Disney managed to turn Star Wars saga into "Hannah Montana in Space"...

I would argue, against that defence of her, that the sentence “I enjoy making men uncomfortable” is even more insulting to the massive percentage of men who DON’T believe in the practice of honour killings.
I, for one, don’t believe in honour killings, and using the term “men” as a pejorative when referencing “men who advocate honour killings” is extremely insulting.
If she meant “men who advocate honour killings”, she shouldn’t have used “men” as if we all believe the same things.

I stopped watching star wars stuff after Kenobi. So nothing to be sad about when not watching the new stuff anyway.
They will learn if the franchise goes to crap. And if not maybe I am wrong. Who knows.
Tell me about it. I passed that point a long time ago, and the same with Doctor Who, Star Trek and Marvel films. Star Wars is just something I loved in the past now, and the past tense. So nothing made now, going forward or in the future with the Star Wars name, stirs any interest in me at all. And it wont get my money, as I know the people involved do not deserve it. They hate me, as I am a white, straight male. So why would I pay people who despise me, have contempt for me, and the films and shows I like?
This is what I learned getting old is. You build something up, new people come and tear it down because you are old and they want to take your idea and make it theirs.

I'm not sure which is worse.
She should have said, "It is time for a woman who deals with life/death issues to bring that kind of honesty to cinema again."
I'm a writer and story teller. It's 2024 and I think it's time a person who cares about the story directs a Star Wars movie.

They may not be consciously trying to take it down but it's just what feels right to them. Destroying revered things gives them that "fight the power" feeling.
