  • Just a quick video and chat about how I clean my dishes after making soap. I hate wasting water so much, and I hate wasting paper towels, but let's face it this business is messy LOL - we have to clean and to do that there is water and paper towels (or regular towels that then have to be washed).
    There is no good or easy answer - this is just how I do the best I can with cleaning up messy dishes!

    I love the microfiber shop towels. I can use one for my whole batch of soapy dishes. Then I leave it to sit a few days and wash with a load of towels. I wash the dishes right away 99% of the time. I do this by using dawn and half a pitcher of hot water. I'll blitz the stick blender and just transfer the soapy water to the next container as I wash. Saves water, saves paper towels, saves my sanity!

    I use a cloth (glass fibre cloth I believe you call it) during soaping and to wipe my equipment for cleaning. Then I put the cloth in a plastic bag, let it set up for a couple of days, and throw it in the washing machine 😊

    I confess...I let my dishes set for 24 then I scrap them out then I wash them. I just hate using all them paper towels. I've tried to use re-usable towels but that's just more laundry. And frankly, I don't know which I hate doing more the dishes or the laundry. LOL.

    I use blue shop towels. They are really handy! I also wipe my containers out. Then the only difference is. I take all mine to the sink. Pour some Dawn Xtra over them. I fill my 6 quart dutch oven, fillit with water, bring it to a boil and pour it over my dishes. I let them soak 30 minutes and wash them up. I can't handle them sitting anywhere! My OCD won't allow that. I tried twice to let them sit and both times got up in the middle of the night to wash them! I know it's ridiculous, but in my small brain, I feel like I'm making a mess and leaving it for someone else! Also, I don't like to have to clean up before I start a new soap, skin cream, etc. It takes up my time too. I just want to get down to business. Especially if I have to s r eralize my work station to make body or face products.

      I take my dishes upstairs to the kitchen a lot of the times, I have to look at them there but not in my soap room LOL - I don't think I could handle waiting for the water to boil! (have I mentioned I'm impatient 😂) You are more full time than me, so I don't usually have to jump from one project to another, well that's not true, on the weekends I absolutely jump from one to the other. sometimes if I am making another batch of soap I do wash them right away in hot soapy water.

    I do the same thing it makes it so much easier to clean them after you wipe them out. I use to let them sit overnight but I agree it takes so much water when I did that.

    I use the blue shop paper towels, they are thicker and absorb more oils per use. They are more expensive though and not reusable. I like them for heavier duty jobs and keep regular paper towels on hand for every day light clean up. I clean up pretty much the same way as you.

    • @WalnutCreekBathBoutique
      @WalnutCreekBathBoutique  2 роки тому

      Thanks for sharing! I think that is what was recommended to me once. Do you find you use fewer of them when cleaning soap dishes? (I assume that is what you mean for heavier duty jobs??)

    • @thesoapcrate596

      @@WalnutCreekBathBoutique yes, I use much less when cleaning up after making soap. 1 shop towel does the work of 3-4 regular paper towels. They also don't tear as easily and leave less lint behind which makes them really nice to have on hand for other more detailed jobs.

    I appreciate the tips on how you clean. I'm the worst about setting them in the sink overnight and then washing it down the drain. We are on septic as well and would not be happy if I end up having to replace it due to my soapmaking. I am definitely going to change my cleaning process to pre-wiping everything. What might seem like very insignificant video content could actually save a viewer thousands of dollars in replacing a septic. Thank you for the heads up.

    Hey there...well I gave you a thumbs up lol because I do mine the same way I just found it took too much time to do it later Getting the set up soap off of the spatulas and out of the nooks and crannies....well I could do something else..anything else! lol We are also on a septic (have been for 38 years) and are very mindful of what goes down the drain Making soap isn't all about the beautiful colours and swirls and the cut..there's so much more behind the scenes so this video was appreciated hon. Thanks so much and keep smilin', love your channel! ~ Michele

    Oh Tammy, we are kindred spirits! I'm on septic too and very protective of it. I moved into my house 4 years ago and the house is about 32 years old. The last owners didn't take very good care of it. I worry about having to replace the septic so I wipe everything out! Great video, thanks for sharing!!

      YAY for kindred spirits! 😊 - I can laugh about it now but that really was a horrible time for us. We almost lost our home because we didn't know where we were going to put the new system in (you can't replace one in the same place as the old one). We also had to cut down 2 huge trees in our front yard to make room for the new system (that was $8000.00 on its own!😲)

      Aww thanks!! Honestly people get bent out of shape on the paper towel issue, but you have to pick your poison. You are either using a lot of paper towels or a lot of water. I'm so happy you found this helpful!💖

    My process is much the same as yours but with an added step. After the scrape out and wipe down, I spray the with isopropyl alcohol and wipe them out/off a second time. The actually washing takes very little water or time and there is almost nothing being washed down into the pipes :)

    • @WalnutCreekBathBoutique

      Nice tip Hilary, I may have to start spraying down with RA, that makes total sense. I sometimes have to do that after washing to get the last bit of oiliness off. I bet they will wash better if I do it first. Thanks for sharing!💖

    LOL...thats exactly what I do! I just bought some "reusable" paper towels. I am not sure how they will work but I thought I would give it a go! (If and when I get back to my soap room) I will keep you posted when I use them. Another great video!!!

      Please be careful when using them to clean oils. The heat from drying, if the oils do not wash away, can cause them to spontaneously combust. This is a very large fire hazard. Do not store a large volume of them either as they can also spontaneously combust. I am by no means a fire specialist, just from someone familiar with oil paints and a recent news story I caught about a massage studio fire.

      do you mean by drying them in a dryer? I've never thought about there possibly being oils left on the towels and how that may cause issues...another reason for me to keep doing what I am doing LOL

    • @Signrmsigncs
      @Signrmsigncs 2 роки тому

      @@WalnutCreekBathBoutique the story I caught was about a regular sized load of towels and sheets. They were washed and then dried. The dried items were left in a ball. The residual heat trapped within the fabric caused the oils to catch on fire.

    Yikes on the tree getting your septic system! I dread the thought of that happening with ours (although we can hook into city sewer if it does).
    Believe it or not, I've actually been wondering about how people clean up after making CP soap. I only do M&P, so I was curious what all was involved when making soap completely from scratch.
