Correction. INSANE value at the moment. You can get a D850 used for under 2k which is just mind blowing. I just picked up a great quality used 14-24 2.8 for 750$. Hard to beat that
I spent roughly 30 years of my professional life working with dual screens. Now, the very reason I went into photography is all about light and optics and I am not trading an optical viewfinder for an an electronic viewfinder. In spite of the exposure marvels (Zebras) and autofocus tracking tricks of mirrorless cameras, you are adding another filtering layer (WB) when using an EVF. I am sticking to my D850 and long prime lenses to capture the optical complexities of light. To me, it enhances the feeling of interconnectedness I have with our natural environment. I admire the advances in microelectronics in the photosites of camera bodies to capture useful photons in low light conditions but I want my eyes to be in direct contact with the complexities of light. Since everyone is rushing to buy mirrorless, I might even be able to buy the low light beast, the Nikon D6, at some stage.
The D700 is anomaly among cameras. It is the ONLY Nikon model that used Panasonic sensor instead of regular Sony sensor and that is reason why it has unique colors compared to entire Nikon line.
It's still the best Nikon ever made and I have tried everyone of them. This one is still the best for portraits. Details, dynamics, colours: pure magic. I'm buying a second one this month.
The D850 images are just incredible…if I had a need for sports or fast action I’d consider changing but I don’t need those things. Camera manufacturers throw a lot of marketing wank around to get you to change but for most it’s not necessary
@@On3legs Any camera that produced great images, still & always will as long as they still work. I f Nikon comes out with a true D850 replacement (not the Z7II/SHUTTER LAG) I believe they will stop production of the D850 within 1-2 years after that. Legally they are supposed to supply parts & service for 7 years after the last sale. Probably be my next. Puts out beautiful colors.
Hey thanks for the great video. I sold my D850 and went mirrorless, (Nikon Z7ii and Z6ii) and I'm honestly thinking of switching back. Mirrorless, IMO is just a different workflow that does not necessarily produce better results. It's only advantage is it's a little lighter. I think the OVF is so much easier to use, especially for using polarizers and grad filters. Blue hour is harder with a EVF knowing that you are in focus. I might wait to see what the Z8 offers, but selling my D850 is a choice I truly regret.
Hey Richard thanks for commenting. Interesting to see first hand how some people feel about the changes. I am loving my D850 and I know it has years left in it. I have shot with many mirrorless cameras including the GFX Fujifilm system and still love my DLSR. I truly wonder if I should change even when the Z8 arrives. Considering I post 90% of my images online even the D850 is an overkill. Cheers. I will hang on to my D850 forever I think. One of the best if not the best DSLRs ever made.
A lot of people just want the latest new thing when they buy into mirrorless. They switch and are disappointed with the battery life or the EVF. Remember only the higher end new mirrorless cameras are close to being equal to the DSLR. All the rest are still less than comparable. And many people don't have deep enough pockets to switch back so they defend their switch even if they may regret it. I still believe there will be a way to incorporate an optical viewfinder into mirrorless. When they finally figure that out I'll buy into them. Of course then there'll be a mad rush to dump all the current generation of cameras that have no OVF, but it'll be worth the wait.
I lost my D810 due to 10-12 foot vertical fall into a pond of about 2 feet deep; landing on the body and distorting the housing. I switched to a Z6ii and to be honest, I’d rather have the 810 back…
Nikons mirrorless implementation is not great… I have a Z6ii and a D750, and a D500, and several Fuji mirrorless… Nikons mirrorless implementation is not nearly as good as Fujis, and the Nikon mirrorless do not perform well for photos compared to the DSLRs, granted the D500 is probably THE best Nikon high speed DSLR!
i did an image count on my 850 yesterday...42,200 images & still going strong. I love everything about it & am resisting going mirrorless, I'll wait till the Z8 comes out.
I purchased a Z9 in June 2022 and in December 2022, decided to go back and buy a brand new D850. I am a 30+ year Nikon shooter and am still devoted to the DSLR format. I just discovered your channel and am enjoying your content and am now a subscriber. BTW, I live in the USA.
I've been shooting with a Nikon D850 for almost 2 years and the dynamic range and detail continues to blow me away, I've also found it's ability to shoot in darker scenes is fantastic right up to ISO 6400 I've got very useable images with no noticeable noise without zooming in and that is easily edited down to be almost none. I primarily shoot wildlife and the autofocus has been brilliant even with birds in flight I've had dead sharp photos and even when I expose for bright daylight in the sky and the birds look near black the detail is all easily brought back, unbelievable
farout Ben , good show. I've been a D850 photographer for 5-6 years now and I love this Camera. I will not switch to z system. i tryed one , none or very little difference. Long Live Nikon !
Hi Shawn, Thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment! I'm glad to hear that you've been using the Nikon D850 for several years and that you're enjoying it. It's definitely a great camera that can produce stunning images. I understand your loyalty to the Nikon brand, and it's great to hear that you're not planning to switch to the Z system. While the Z system does have some advantages, I can understand why you might prefer to stick with the D850.
I have tested the Z9 last week with a friend and went back to my D850 and said: YOU ROCK! I couldn't even used the Z9 with it's silent shutter after 15 years of using DSLR shutter ( Nikon ) NEVER EVER liked the digital sound of the Z9 shutter it's so silly. I sold some DSLR lenses and got Sony mirrorless for video but still keeping D850 with prime lenses ( 35 1.4G, 200 F2, 600 FL) useful video Ben Thanks
I sold all of my Canon DSLR kit (5D IV + 4x L Lenses) to buy an R5 + RF 24-70 2.8L IS USM lens. I love this new setup, BUT I really do miss the 5D IV, I realise this is a video about the Nikon D850, however I think this video is making me feel nostalgic about my DSLR. I might get a 2nd hand one for a back up.....
Brother. Picture quality is same z50 or d850. Which best lowlight image quality... i want buy for faimly photography . Z50 . D850.... you have both...tell me...
I could not agree with you more , the camera is a beast. It hasn't let me down so I applaud it. Exceptional images even in jpegs. So I'll keep it. Love the tiff mode as well. Thanks great video about a great image maker.
Had my D850 for $1000. $1000!!! You are right. The dynamic range is to die for and the gorgeous 45mp as well. Wanna fix it up with a voigtlander 28mm f2.8 colour skopar sl II. Can't wait.
Some chap needed a 60MP for his work. It's a bang up d850. Got nicks and scrathes with a 200k actuator. But it works! So, I'm just lucky. The chap just posted his camera for a couple of hours. I bid. And I got it. Very lucky.
Now is the best time to buy a Nikon DSLR as there are deals to be made in used or nearly new, and some retailers. Although I don't have D850, I love my D750. (maybe get a D850 if I see a good used one with low shutter for landscape or cityscape at a good price).
Ordered a brand new D850 today for $2700, along with 24-70mm 2.8E VR Lens. This camera once discontinued will make people regret. I just can't buy used camera gear as I tend to baby my equipment and very particular about how it's handled.
For used equipment try looking into Map Camera in Tokyo. Great selection, lens was listed as ‘near mint’ and it looked new and operated as expected. They have an eBay store. Most prices included shipping and it arrived in North Carolina in the US in 3 days. Worth a look….I’ve never purchase used before and this was a great eye opener.
I live a few hours north of Tokyo and have bought quite a bit of gear from Map. Good prices and excellent warranty for used gear (well... if you live in Japan anyway). The only thing I don't like is, to get some perks I had to install an app on my phone and register with them. They sent so many emails, I had to redirect some of them to Spam. 😒
It is now 2023 and it is still the Best DSLR around I have the older D800 for ten years now I am thinking about getting one and keep my D800 now new around 2 grand in South America
Hi Edward, Thanks for your comment and for sharing your thoughts on the Nikon D850! I completely agree that it's still one of the best DSLRs on the market, even in 2023. It's great to hear that you've been using the D800 for ten years and are considering upgrading to the D850. While the D800 is still a great camera, the D850 offers many improvements and new features that make it a worthwhile upgrade. It's also great to hear that the camera is available at a reasonable price in South America. Thanks again for your comment, and I hope you enjoy your new camera if you decide to make the upgrade!
The D850 is ALWAYS a good camera… it’s the epitome of DSLR, and a prime example of Nikon engineering… which cannot be said for the current plastic lenses they’re putting out for the mirrorless mount right now
I know right. Why do they keep making lenses out of plastic? I know they want to keep the weight down but I doubt in 30,40 or even 50 years these lenses will still exist. You can still find old Nikon lenses today but not sure that will happen in the future
Thanks for the interesting video Ben. I have recently ordered my D850 for wildlife and nature photography. Mirrorless may be the next step, though personally I want to wait a little longer until all the bugs are ironed out. I'm off to the Okavango Delta in October and am really looking forward to using it. I have chosen the 200 - 500 lens with a 24 - 120 as a back-up. I look forward to watching your other videos. Take care, David
Good choice! I have the 200-500 lens and am super happy with it. It looks like we will have no choice soon, Nikon are stopping any production of DSLR's in 2025.
@@On3legs Thanks for responding Ben. I agree that I will switch to mirrorless. I looked long and hard at the Canon R5 before choosing the D850 for now. I find Sony to small for my hands, which are not large. Other than price, there are two issues that would encourage me to switch when I'm ready: battery life and not having to worry about the sensor getting dusty etc. Take care, David
I have theD700 and D800E. I'm saving for a 2nd hand D850 but I need to upgrade some lenses to be able to use the resulation. I need a AFS 400mmF2.8 G VR. AFS 24-70mmF2.8 VR and a AFS 70-200mmF2.8 E VR. I will get the Zriss Milvus 500F2.0 Macro next year. I got a used AFS 28mmF1.4 last year.
About 8 months ago I picked up a used D850 on ebay. 7700 clicks on the shutter. USA model. Nikon grip and 3 batteries. 2 L brackets one each for use with and without the grip. Battery charger. for $2600 US. Since then I've picked up a few used lenses from Japan and the US plus a few new ones. Been shooting Nikon since the late 1970's. The best tip I can give when buying used Nikon gear is spend the money for near mint or excellent plus rated gear. Anything less and your paying for abused equipment.
Excellent honest review………I have been shooting a D500 mainly on wildlife but looking to advance my photography and enlargability of my work. I am uncertain about the jump to mirrorless and can’t afford the Z9, so I think that you have given me good reason to grab a D850. Thanks!
I'm still with nikon d90 16-85 my first digital camera and lens after old Minolta film camera. I dream about Z9,but I'll buy the Z8,in the worst case the Z7 II
As a photographer, I follow all the changes that companies are making, Nikon still hasn't managed to do better in what really interests me: sensor quality, dynamic range iso capacity and in that the D850 is still at the top, because I would switch to another camera when will my pictures come out similar? The evolutionary capabilities of the sensors are running out but companies want to continue to make profits and sell new products that in my opinion are absolutely unnecessary for 80% of photographers, there are still sports and wildlife photographers for whom 30 images per second can be useful.
My work camera is a D850, but being mostly unfamiliar with the big and heavy F mount type, I bought a good secondhand D800 for $650(!) so I could learn how to use the later model better, at my own pace with no time pressure. I’m so pleased with my little purchase, as it’s helped me greatly at work, and it’s renewed my interest in landscape photography. A decent older Nikon zoom 75-300 lens is now in my immediate future.
I picked up a D850 with a 50mm f1.4D for $400 in great shape about a month ago (high shutter count at 200k but I serviced it and it shows no signs of slowing down). Can't beat that value anywhere. Already done about 15k clicks this month.
Nikon has had some fantastic DSLR's D300s, D90,D800,D700 and the D850. i started on a kit D5000 then went D7000 now mirrorless Z6 but like you said The D850 is still one of the best on the market.
The only people that say you need to transition to mirrorless right now is UA-camrs getting a kickback. They want you to get the latest and greatest camera every year just like your cellphone. If it’s more than a year old, it’s considered obsolete and ancient. Absolutely ridiculous!
its really a great camera i still use mine, but i do miss my Z6II functionality, i keep asking myself aww i miss X or Y when using the D850, but....that ability to get the shot on D850 is simply amazing. Its not got the D5 AF at all, it doesnt have great low light like the Z6II but again, it just gets the detail in the image, the grp AF is still in my view great. My D850 is at 650,000 actuations now as i do live sports and indoor sports. It was my main, with grip at 9fps, i use it for 10-12hrs straight, maybe 1min between athletes, 200 images a routine, the camera gets HOT because its always in use, ive not had 1 issue, not had an overhead/card issue or anything. It has a benefit also when you switch to DX mode the AF point stays the same size, in Mirrorless it increases the size, because of how it reads the sensor, meaning you can focus on background if you dont fill the frame say on 24-70, its an issue you will have until we get a 2.8 lens covering 24-105 range(or version). It doesnt happen on any other brand, just nikon, its painfull using it at events to see it swap to background focusing. For nature and landscapes i love it, however the silent shooting i am finding it a lot better being in nature and not hearing clack clack, i think when the Z8 or Z6III/Z7III come i will eventually put my 850 in my dusty bag of gear. I wont get rid of it at all. Look after your camera, get your calibration yearly and it will serve you like mine, i am sure end of this year i will be at 700,000. Z6II is at 150,000.
I did 2 weekend training shoots, 1 automotive, 1 nature. and in every case i shot until i decided i got the shot. Automotive i got 850(1500) Z6II(4000). I just found the D850 just gets the shot, but there are other options in the Z6II which outshine the D850, but its not enough with its existing AF. I will explain why. The AF config i use on my D850 is Single point on BackButton, 9 point on Joystick and lens Group AF. Thats not possible to do on Z6II meaning to get there you need the Z9, But the Z9 at £5,200 is an overkill and is noisy compared to the Z6II live. I shoot unedited straight to clients. Also for the Z6II there is an AF point for each type subject, when you get one you have to test test test until you get the Subject point perfect for its use, for instance a 70-200 with Eye detect on DynAF(small box) is so easy to go in pic an eye and compose and its perfect, but for an animal you have to be more specific so you dont pick up a wing over an eye for instance where as GRP AF on the D850 just seems to get it, no issues not fluffing trying to decide, which is why the Z9 is so much better with 3D over the top of your selection..and that is why i am waiting on the next level of affordable camera with a decent enough AF for work and home use, until then i am keeping my D850.
That is why I'm waiting for the Z8. The customisation of the buttons is something that I do not want to go without and the D850 makes it really easy to set up. I have mine set up for landscape photography, wildlife photography and macro photography using the three custom settings so it is easy to switch between each one
$2750 from Amazon AU? I am so close to pulling the trigger on an D850 but I cant find anything close to that price. In your experience sales such as boxing day reduce the cost of these favourites? Looking at a Sigma 60 - 600mm as well for the unit.
It's funny since doing the video I also struggle to find one at a decent price. It seems they have gone back up in price may be the demand with the delays of parts for the mirror less series has driven the price up
We don’t really have to make a switch to mirrorless. Personally I never will. Right now is the best time to buy a great DSLRs Nikon ever produced. D3s, D4s,even D5 are great machines plus tones of great F glass available out there to pair them with. I also have two D850’s and I absolutely love this camera. They are my workhorse for weddings and for landscape which is my hobby. I did try mirrorless but this system is just not for me.
Absolutely spot on! Most people around the world are switching to mirrorless without even judging whether they at all need to switch! It's like buying new iPhone the moment there is a new model 😊 I am super happy with my 5 years old D5 with the glasses I need - 24-70 f/2.8VR and 70-200 f/2.8VR. I have no intention and need to buy any mirrorless at the moment and in near future. In fact, I am casually planning to buy a new D850 as my 2nd body!
Hey Rob, while I think DSLR systems are great I think the primary reason many shooters make the switch is because manufacturers won’t keep upgrading the DSLR systems in terms of technology going forward. Like all the auto focus improvements that the Mirrorless bodies have gotten. In a way it’s future proofing by making that switch. But that said for landscape photography the DSLR bodies are a great option when you account in the price too. I mostly do wildlife and bird photography and auto focus improvements matters in that space.
@@nikilk Hi, I do wildlife and sports photography too and I think the auto focus is more then enough on my D5/D500 or even D850 body. Its also depends on camera operators skills and knowledge how to use it. Talking about mirrorless, I tested Z9 just yesterday and D5 was able to grab the focus more accurately and faster the Z9 in low light. Thats makes me wonder how much improvement we really need because features like eye detection or face detection or even 3D tracking is for me more like selling points which are not really needed. I do like technology improvements but mirrorless are too computerized. They are very different and they don’t t have the same feel as camera should have.We already have the best technologies in DSLRS and all what we need to do is just keep using them. They are great and they will be great even in 10 years time. I don’t see any limitations which will holding me back from getting the images I want. Mirrorless are sad future of photography.
@@2klember I understand the sentiment you share about Mirrorless being too computerized. A lot of people say they get a lot more keepers using the z9 versus when having to purely rely on the hard skills of the photographers. That to me sounds like an unfair advantage especially when your a sports and wildlife shooter. How do you then compete with computer aided focus tracking ? It’s not humanly possible to nail as many sharp focus shots. That tech then frees up the photographer to put his focus on other creative elements of the craft besides having to focus on nailing focus. The tech just gives an unfair advantage which would be exceedingly difficult to compete with. Now besides the autofocus how about focus peaking whereby an outline gets drawn over the scene indicating the region that’s manually in focus ? That’s something that would benefit macro, nature photography. What about live histograms that you can rely on irrespective of the lighting conditions. The list of tech aided photography would just keep growing with time. I understand that Mirrorless cameras will exceeding get closer to the computer aided photography but it’s what smartphones started off in a huge way. Like one click HDR images on most phones. It does take multiple shots at varying exposures behind the scene and stitch them all up. That’s the general direction towards pro body cameras and Mirrorless is just the gateway to that.
let me know when you selling the D850, I used to have the D4 but sold and bought Panasonic G9 but I miss the full frame, I still have Nikon 24-70 f2.8, 50mm f 1.4 and 105 f 2.8.. I am in Melbourne . Cheers
Do you have something about the zed 9 you don’t care for and therefore waiting for a zed 8? I’m selling my d810’s keeping my d500 and about to begin using a d850.
Hi Kenny, Thanks for being a subscriber and for leaving a comment! To clarify, I don't have anything specific against the Nikon Z9, and I'm actually quite excited about the camera and its capabilities. However, as a photographer who primarily shoots landscapes and other stationary subjects, I don't necessarily need all of the advanced features and speed that the Z9 offers. That being said, the Nikon Z8 is rumored to be a great option for photographers.. I'm definitely interested in the camera and will be keeping an eye on any official news and reviews that come out. It sounds like you have a great setup with the D500 and D850, and I'm sure you'll be able to capture some amazing shots with those cameras. Thanks again for your support, and I hope you enjoy using your gear to its fullest potential!
I sold my D850 to go "modern" and lighter mirrorless to the Fuji X100v. I cursed myself after about a week. Ive been debating wether to go Z7ii or go back to my "old" beloved D850. With the Fujifilm, it was like shooting with an iPhone. There was absolutely no magic like the images from D850. Like you, I will no doubt someday go mirrorless, but the D850 is so awesome, I don't see that happening for another few years. Thanks for your Video, it came at the perfect time as I was literally on the brink of going mirrorless yet again but you've reminded me how amazing I felt shooting with my D850, without a doubt the greatest (and final?) DSLR ever made and will very probably Always will be! Try saying that about any mirrorless these days (they become "obsolete in a year).Totally gonna buy it back and love every second!
Hello Ben ... like with everything else the pulling shadows out of the darkness is for a price .. for bloody price .. it significantly impacts details and colours
Better than not getting the shot because there it too much dynamic range. I agree, just about everything in photography has a comprimise, and opposing force should we say. But we learn to live with these and for the most part, they are not significant unless selling prints or working professionaly. for 99% they share images online and thats it.
@@On3legs Yeah, what I meant is that ideal shot is almost always bracketed .. I have D850 and D7200 but I hike a lot .. really lot so I use D7200 primarily when hiking with backpack is involved and I need to eat the miles .. If you do bracketing and then blend exposures, you will start seeing differences only when you start with pixel peeping .. problem here is, at least for me, that I am not very excited from mirrorless .. for weight and size I'd certainly enjoy mirrorless full frame camera more but man, I am just either old or I have some mind block, shooting with EVF simply don' t excite me and thrill me like shooting with optical viewfinder ..
Sorry I only purchase "New" I like to have a warranty with my equipment, I got a D850 A few months ago. Nice Camera, but I was shooting with a D3s and a D700 Camera. Those two are still in my arsenal! Hard to beat the performance of those cameras!
Got a D5100 in a trade and I love it so much I was gonna get the D7200 but after researching it makes sense to spend double the amount and get this D850 even if itll cost so much if I canfind a nice owner with a great lens bundle + cards then why not spend 2000-3500$ instead of maybe getting a D7200 for around 900$ (Canadian Money)
I’m buying an 850 today. Think I’m going to wait a while on the mirrorless options. Plus I have a lot of Nikon AF-D lenses that won’t autofocus on the mirrorless
I’ve seen a few of these listed used but the d780 is as rare as hens teeth right now. The small stores don’t even bother displaying dslr bodies but on the websites are still seem way overpriced.
Would the D850 be a good upgrade from the D3400 in the future for wildlife photography or should I go with some Z series one? I'm currently a beginner photographer but I plan to get a better camera once I get the ropes and feel fully comfortable with a DSLR.
Hi Strider. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I've had a crazy December! The D850 would be a fantastic upgrade. However I think you would be better off going for a Z7ii and get yourself into the new mirror less ecosystem.
When it comes down to important aspects, the Nikon D800, D850, and Z9 all basically produce the same image quality using similar lenses. So in the end, it all boils down to handling, personal choice and the depth of your bank balance.
@@Patto2276 Yes. I still prefer the D800, although as mentioned, they all will produce top images and video in the right hands. The image quality between the D800, D810, D850 and Z9 is hair thin, so not worth trying decipher the best. Obviously the D850 and D9 have a host of speed improvements and some handling improvements, but none of these aspects change the fact that nobody could tell which images were shot with which 📷 camera.
When you buy the mirrorless, I would still keep your D850. It’s too good to sell if you really enjoy it. I have 16 cameras. I only sell what I really don’t want to use again. I keep my favourites!
Good video! - i currently (pure hobby-geek...i dont make money of photography) use a D4s and a D800 depending on what im gonna shoot. i LOVE both but the D800 is a bit slow...and the D4s is only 16mpxl... so i'm kinda torn on "going mirrorless" (not sure which one would be best for me (Z9 is outta my price-league)), or maybe get a used D850. With a batterygrip the D850 aaaalmost get the same fps as the D4s...but its still "old tech" so i'm not sure that the best choice would be.
@@On3legs Hi - you are probably right but I was at a photo fare some weeks ago tho and spoke to a Nikon sales-rep about my thoughts. He wasnt allowed to say anything in details...but he thought i should "wait a bit if i wasnt in a hurry" :) so thats what im gonna do. Nikon HAS to make a "budget-version of the Z9" - Canon and Sony have all-animal autofocus on several models.
I have watched so many reviews of the D850, and the Z series cameras to the point where I’m confused as to my next choice of camera. Many are saying for the type of photography I do that the only Z series that would better the D850 is the Z9. Currently use D500 but also own a Z50 as back up camera(buffer is a bit slow for some trips out where I shoot military aviation photos).
Image quality for sure, but I don't think that is a stand out since new cameras are on par. It really comes down to viewfinder and battery. The D850 battery lasts about 3X most EVF's out today. Photogs out in the field, far away from battery power really appreciate that. Re. buttons vs. menus, the contra to this is that many buttons are customizable through menus.
Hi Timothy, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Nikon D850! You make some excellent points regarding the camera's battery life and viewfinder, which are both standout features that set the D850 apart from newer cameras on the market. Having a long-lasting battery is especially important for photographers who spend long hours in the field and may not have easy access to power sources. Regarding the buttons vs. menus debate, you're right that many cameras today offer the option to customize buttons through menus. However, some photographers still prefer the tactile feel of physical buttons, which can be quicker and more intuitive to use in certain situations. Overall, the Nikon D850 remains a top-performing camera in 2023 and beyond, and it's great to see that it still holds up well against newer models. Thanks again for sharing your insights!
The only way you could use your Sigma lens on a Nikon is to buy an adapter if it was at all possible. You would be better off buying a lens with the Nick on F Mount
Thanks a ton for this video , but I am beginner in photography field …. Shall I go with d850 or mirrorless , purpose is - only photography (landscape/portrait/product )
I recently trade off my beloved D850 and tamron 15-30 to Z7ii and Nikon 14-24s ...now Z7ii having some crucial advantages which will be beneficial in field like 1. extended shutter mode option where no need to carry external device . 2. Z7ii and 14-24s combo almost 800 gms lighter . 3. low light auto focus is awesome even with 10 stop filter u cn focus and even you focus on the stars at night . 3. 14-24 does not have any focus breathing which helps you in focus stacking . 4. No coma and way brighter corner and corner performance with lens combo .5. due to lighter setup you may use lighter tripod n ball heads or tracker without counter weight . 6 . powerbank charging during shooting is a good feature .7 . No more 150 mm filter system required :) I switched to Kase sensor filter and works like a charm. 8. Getting perfect infinity focus in S line lens er very easy which reduce time in field at night.
Hello, Ben. Recently, I became interested in cameras, so I searched various camera models of Sony, Canon, and Nikon on the Internet and fell in love with d850😅 Recently, however, the camera market is changing to mirrorless model So would it be a good choice to buy a d850 even if I buy a camera later this year or next year?😀 I wonder what you think because you have experienced various cameras on nikon. Also, I would appreciate it if you could recommend a nikon f-mount lens that can show the performance of the d850 well Thank you😘
Hi. I'm here because I've just bought the D850 as an upgrade from my D750. I also considered going mirrorless but decided I didn't want to have one mirrorless camera (and have to use the lens adaptor) and my D750. Yes, I could have got an adaptor for the lenses I already own, but also know that one day I'll forget it and be in deep trouble. If starting into photography now, I would 100% go mirrorless as that is the future and then you can buy the right lenses first time, no adaptor needed. Hope that helps. :-)
thats a tough question to answer. If you already have F mount lenses, then it makes sense. If you get a good deal, it makes sense. If you have nothing and you are just getting your first camera, then I would go to a Z6 or Z7 to start with
@@667NMP Thank you for your kind answer 😊I recently bought a d750 and 50.8 lens through a used transaction I take your opinion for granted at the moment😁Because Nikon will no longer release the dslr model, and a new z model is scheduled to be released around the end of the year😅 However, the price of mirrorless cameras and lenses is still expensive, so I would like to upgrade to d850 after I gain enough camera function and skills with d750😉 I think you can take a nice picture with the D850 for a few years if you have the F-mount's top lens
@@On3legs Thank you for your answer. I recently bought d750&50.8 lens considering the entrance ability and my bank account situation😂 I bought 85.8 lenses yesterday, so I'm going to buy either 24-70 or 24-120 lenses and 70-200 lenses if I have a chance😁I want to study the camera function and how to take pictures with d750 and then settle down with d850. There is news that a new mirrorless model will be released around the end of the year, but above all, I think that the result depends on the skill and effort of the photographer, so I think d850 is enough😉 thank you
Everyone has opinions about lenses, but Thom Hogan has a pretty good list of recommended Nikon lenses, also accounting for various camera models. My favorites for the D850 are the 24-70 f/2.8E (you won't be happy with the 24-120), the 14-24 and, of course the 70-200 f/2.8E. My prime lenses look great with the D850, but I'm told there are better lenses for it out there.
well after playing with mirrorless . i have a few d850s which i soon realised i was sticking with ..i have grips capable of near 10 fps ( which i never use ) only for the super long battery life , AND its never been better for nikon dslr users to buy the trinity of 2.8 lenses used and mint .(because everyone is rushing to mirrorless in fear of being left behind ) 😃😃😃. marketing crazyness !
Hi buddy, thank you so much for your great video, I have D850 with 14-24 lens as well. I’m having a hard time to find a filter for this big boy could you please help me out and tell me if you have one or how can I buy?
Yes! The big boy needs a big filter! There are a few on the market. I have the Lee SW150 filter kit. If you search Google for Nikon 14-24 filter kit you should find them. Just keep in mind the z lens is a different filter.
thanks so much for this review, I will buy this camera. I am an amateur, and this will do fine, in fact, it is a fantastic camera, which was just too expensive imo for a hack like me. Used is fine, photographers usually take care of their gear. Will buy from certified shop, to be on the safe side. I believe DSLR is done, and the cameras will not be built any longer in 2023, at least that is what I hear from a Japanese friend. So first rate opportunity to pounce. I have a 10 year old Canon that is still really great.....
The D850 really is a great camera 📷 and still produces great images. Hey stackit1 Stackers thanks for dropping in to leave a message!you will be happy.
I would never ever buy a brand new model - I’m always about 5 years in technology because I’m cheap - so I usually buy used. The best prices are on Adorama where I buy most of my used equipment. I agree the 850 is the best camera for the most part. Great review.
Yes I agree, the 850 is a fantastic camera and probably a good buy in the used market but if I am going to change camera there are some other things to consider. Size, weight and I really want a flip screen. When your camera bag is full every gram counts if you walking for a whole day. One of the downsides with a mirrorless is what I understand is that the sensor seems to attract dust so you have to be careful when changing lenses.
D850 has a tilting screen too. Easier way to reduce weight is to leave the lenses you don’t use at home. Most people I see on my workshops own too many lenses. One lens is lighter than 4 😊
I'm old school I still have my film body Nikon F3 w/ the moter drive, RB67 with wast level and prison view finder, 120 & 220 film backs 2 lens. Now digital and this is as far as I'll go is nikon D810, & D850 I won't do mirror less
Couldn't agree with you more (except with respect to what you said about warrantee) - in the USA you'd have to buy a secondary warrantee since Nikon does not, to my knowledge, warrantee second hand gear (also not transferable). I shoot mostly sports, wildlife, action and so a move to the Z9 was essential for that work. When a friend asked me why I was holding onto the D850, I reiterated many of the reasons you mention. The D850 still outperforms the Z9 for DR between ISO 64 and ISO 500 (might be equal to the Z7ii). Mirrorless is the current wave of the future, but this gives many a golden moment to get into photography with much less expensive kit. That said, as you know, for a beginner the big advantage or mirrorless for beginners includes the WYSIWYG of the EVF. Thanks for the video. Just out of curiosity, what standard picture profile do you have enabled (Neutral, Flat, or Landscape?) For this question, I'm assuming you shoot RAW.
to be honest ...even the d800 (e) is still worth being used in 2022. this camera may be old, but still great. the 850 is better, but if you don't need some of the features, the d800 is enough and i think it will be for a long time.
Exactly a working D800 is great in 2023. Recently, I bought 2 D800 and all of them had the backfocus problem. After that, I was disappointed of DSLR. I think that my next camera will be a mirrorless Z6 II because the AF would be much better.
@@On3legs EVF for starters. Much faster, eye af and can see if have focus lock before snapping pic. The old D850 with OVF is a I think I got it when it's also a maybe not.
I agree the D850 is a great buy right now! With that said, the quality of the new z lenses is superior to Nikon f mount. Mainly at the edges, which are MUCH sharper with the z glass. I think the 14-30 f4 z would impress you and its $1000. Also, don’t overlook the z7 if you are primarily a landscape shooter and need video capability. It has the d850’s sensor with some minor tweaks for a mirrorless system. Pretty much identical image quality to the D850, although in super high dynamic range situations a massive shadow pull can reveal some minor banding. Also, the eye af on the z7 is better than a lot of reviewers give it credit for. The d850 definitely has better af for wildlife, however for portrait I would actually prefer the z7 or z7ii. Also, if you need video capabilities at all, the mirrorless cameras are far superior. Depending on your use case I think the d850 and the z7 can both be purchased for a pretty good deal and are both worth considering depending on your use case.
Ps… no, the d850 is not the best camera for landscape, that would be the Fuji GfX100S! The GfX50R is amazing, and the dynamic range and ISO performance kicks butt
As much as I love the Fuji GFX system (I have shot with the 50S and 50R) I still find the Nikon is probably the best landscape photography camera the 99% of photographers.
I never liked the Sony cameras. I found the fact they were more software driven a down side. I really like having all my controls as dials and buttons, Sony had a lot of adjustments hidden in the software, might have changed since I last held one.
I’m tempted to “upgrade” to mirror less but I have a d850 with a the lens holy trinity, so this is the Peak quality of camera equipment. I bought a z72 but sent it right back because it just felt too cheap in the hands compared to the d850. The Z9 seems like a much closer rival but I don’t want to have to replace all my lenses. So I think I’m going to stick with my current set up and be happy with it.
The 850 is still one of the best unless you want something lighter. If you can handle the weight and you already have the holy trinity then stick with it I say!
@@On3legsAfter trying to get one second hand with a shutter count under 10.000 I gave up. I ended up buying one Brand New from JB Hifi. There List price was $4199.00, and after some tough negotiations, I ended up getting it for $3500.00. I did see one with a shutter count of 20.000 shots for nearly $3000.00, but it didn't make any sense, because for another 500.00 I was getting a new camera with a ZERO shutter count ?
Matthew Vanderputte got 800000 shots on a Canon 5D Mark III. He shoots timelapses, often has more than once camera going. Cameras won't die at 200,000 shots, it's just the rated life. Unless you shoot a lot, there should be no issue with buying a camera with over 100,000 shots. I think that if a photographer actually needs a camera of the standard of the D850, they should stick to their regular brand. Especially if it's a D850. It's a very long time since I had any inclination to buy a Nikon DSLR. It's nothing to do with the camera, it's all in the lenses. Ihave TS-E 17, 24, 45 and 90mm lenses. And an MP-E 65.
I am not buying a mirrorless camera. These cameras a fantastic. Nikon should not discontinue the DSLR. I have been a Nikon supporter for years. Once mine break and my only choice is mirrorless, I am done with Nikon. I will buy used DSLR cameras. I don't think that mirrorless is better for sports photography. It must be cheaper to manufacture.
The reality is mirror less cameras are much lighter and can do things that a traditional DSLR cannot do. Like anything over time as things can be improved through innovation, there is always something that will be superseded. In this case it is that the DSLR
I firmly believe DSLR are longer to last, lenses and bodies. I have mirrorless lenses and bodies and honestly it doesn’t look like its gonna last for 10 years if you use it a lot, but a DSLR looks like its gonna last lifetime 😅
used D850 are expensive here... A new one costs about € 3200, a used one between 2200 and 2500. On a new oner I can withdraw the VAT which leaves about 2600 for a new one. Wait for the Z8 before the used prices on the D850 will drop I guess.
Mmmm ... after shooting Canon SLR's and DSLR's for 30 plus years, I moved to mirrorless the day Sony released the a7R in 2013. After a few Sony upgrades (a7RIII and a7RIV), now shooting a GFX100S. Have a mate who just moved to a Canon R5 from a Phase (true MF). You just can't shoot with a DSLR the way you can with mirrorless. Your D850 is bigger than the GFX btw ...
@@On3legs Hi Ben, I said it's the way you shoot; not what you can shoot. As a landscape shooter, having an EVF that represents the exposure exactly as the sensor sees it is a revelation and allows for accurate exposure adjustments on the fly. The EVF also allows for a plethora of information to be displayed in real time (as the user requires). And, no more mirror ...
I guess Nikon will not bring out a dslr anymore. So yes still worth buying if you want a dslr. Must say that my older camera's such ad the D700, D3s and the D4 still deliver. These are indestructible tanks😁
Great camera, great value at the moment. Photographers will talk about the D850 for years to come 🙂
I'm keeping mine
Agreed
Good move!
Just like the D700.
I have a D700 with over 461k and still going very strong! D850is an amazing DLSR looking forward in getting one soon! Thanks for sharing!!!
Yes Eddie! I cannot agree more. I wish the price would stop going up I would probably buy a spare one. Such a good camera everybody wants one now!
The D850 images are just incredible…if I had a need for sports or fast action I’d consider changing but I don’t need those things. Camera manufacturers throw a lot of marketing wank around to get you to change but for most it’s not necessary
The D850 really is a great camera 📷 and still produces great images. Hey Mr Bob thanks for dropping in to leave a message!
@@tomsviewphoto yeah, the z6 I is a huge disappointment!
i did an image count on my 850 yesterday...42,200 images & still going strong. I love everything about it & am resisting going mirrorless, I'll wait till the Z8 comes out.
me too! I dont think I will ever get rid of the D850.
I purchased a Z9 in June 2022 and in December 2022, decided to go back and buy a brand new D850. I am a 30+ year Nikon shooter and am still devoted to the DSLR format.
I just discovered your channel and am enjoying your content and am now a subscriber. BTW, I live in the USA.
thanks Paul! Appreciate you stopping in! I love the D850...
Have to agree. It’s an impressive beast.
farout Ben , good show. I've been a D850 photographer for 5-6 years now and I love this Camera. I will not switch to z system. i tryed one , none or very little difference.
Long Live Nikon !
Hi Shawn,
Thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment!
I couldn't even used the Z9 with it's silent shutter after 15 years of using DSLR shutter ( Nikon )
NEVER EVER liked the digital sound of the Z9 shutter it's so silly.
I sold some DSLR lenses and got Sony mirrorless for video but still keeping D850 with prime lenses ( 35 1.4G, 200 F2, 600 FL)

Had my D850 for $1000. $1000!!! You are right. The dynamic range is to die for and the gorgeous 45mp as well. Wanna fix it up with a voigtlander 28mm f2.8 colour skopar sl II. Can't wait.

1000??? Lucky. Where did you get it from?
Some chap needed a 60MP for his work. It's a bang up d850. Got nicks and scrathes with a 200k actuator. But it works! So, I'm just lucky. The chap just posted his camera for a couple of hours. I bid. And I got it. Very lucky.
Now is the best time to buy a Nikon DSLR as there are deals to be made in used or nearly new, and some retailers. Although I don't have D850, I love my D750. (maybe get a D850 if I see a good used one with low shutter for landscape or cityscape at a good price).
Totally agree!
I just purchased a D850 for delivery tomorrow.
Awesome! you will love it
Ordered a brand new D850 today for $2700, along with 24-70mm 2.8E VR Lens. This camera once discontinued will make people regret. I just can't buy used camera gear as I tend to baby my equipment and very particular about how it's handled.
That’s a cracking deal! Enjoy
Brilliant camera: Superb, unfussy, straightforward and informative presentation from Ben.
Great tip. Thanks I will check it out
I live a few hours north of Tokyo and have bought quite a bit of gear from Map.
Hi Edward,
Thanks for your comment and for sharing your thoughts on the Nikon D850!

Excellent honest review………I have been shooting a D500 mainly on wildlife but looking to advance my photography and enlargability of my work. I am uncertain about the jump to mirrorless and can’t afford the Z9, so I think that you have given me good reason to grab a D850. Thanks!

I love my D850 .
So true. I am with you! 😎

I’m so pleased with my little purchase, as it’s helped me greatly at work, and it’s renewed my interest in landscape photography. A decent older Nikon zoom 75-300 lens is now in my immediate future.
nice stuff Peter! Cant beat these cameras
I picked up a D850 with a 50mm f1.4D for $400 in great shape about a month ago (high shutter count at 200k but I serviced it and it shows no signs of slowing down). Can't beat that value anywhere. Already done about 15k clicks this month.

@@On3legs Yeh you have the same on Z6II with U1-2-3 doing same functionality as banks. shot an event sunday, U-1 awards 2 sports

It seems they have gone back up in price may be the demand with the delays of parts for the mirror less series has driven the price up
I agree the details I get with birds in flight is amazing I would love to see more of your in camera set up too I’m getting into landscape
Hey Jan. I will try and do a video. A few people have asked
I'm keeping mine and my D700.
Can’t blame you for that!
Nice video. Actually the Tamron 15-30 2.8 bests this lens. You should check it out.
cool.. thanks
Totally agree
Absolutely spot on! Most people around the world are switching to mirrorless without even judging whether they at all need to switch! It's like buying new iPhone the moment there is a new model 😊
I am super happy with my 5 years old D5 with the glasses I need - 24-70 f/2.8VR and 70-200 f/2.8VR.
Cheers
I have the D810 would you advice me still to buy secondhand th3 D850?
Do you have something about the zed 9 you don’t care for and therefore waiting for a zed 8? I’m selling my d810’s keeping my d500 and about to begin using a d850.
Hi Kenny,
Thanks for being a subscriber and for leaving a comment!
Try saying that about any mirrorless these days (they become "obsolete in a year).Totally gonna buy it back and love every second!
yeah... I know the feeling. Cant beat the DSLR
I let go of the D850 for the XT4 and regretted it hard. Now shooting Z7II/Z5 combo, and still miss the D850 - it is a special beast indeed.
Best Nikon ever made. Mirrorless has some advantages but DSLRs are better for some things.
Agreed.
Sorry I only purchase "New" I like to have a warranty with my equipment, I got a D850 A few months ago. Nice Camera, but I was shooting with a D3s and a D700 Camera. Those two are still in my arsenal! Hard to beat the performance of those cameras!
YES! How good is the Nikon cameras!

Agree! you will have it for a long time. You know what they say... buy once, cry once...
Hello Sir, How are you. I wonder will the Nikon D850 use the CF Express type B or It can't ? Thank you

The D850 really is a great camera 📷 and still produces great images. Hey sman222222 thanks for dropping in to leave a message!
I’ve seen a few of these listed used but the d780 is as rare as hens teeth right now. The small stores don’t even bother displaying dslr bodies but on the websites are still seem way overpriced.
Yeah it has got really crazy lately. There seems to be less and less on the second-hand market and the prices are going up
Would the D850 be a good upgrade from the D3400 in the future for wildlife photography or should I go with some Z series one?
Bank balance! Ha ha. Agreed. I will stick with the D850 for now
You've shot them all? I've seen an obvious improvement with the D850 over my (already great) D810.
I think I will keep it. It will be one that I will miss if I sold it.
I shoot events, seminars and headshots with two D850 bodies, It's still a brilliant camera in 2022.
hard to go past. that is for sure!
Hi Kim. I would jump into the Z7ii if you are looking for something that is a good all-rounder in the mirror less ecosystem
@@kimpedersen I hope so!
@@davidlear9597 The Z9 is awesome if you want to shoot action.
For me the size of the D850 makes it a joy to hold compared to any Z camera.

I got mine at Best Buy new for $2300 US.
Well done Ray. It's getting harder to find them at a good price now
Image quality for sure, but I don't think that is a stand out since new cameras are on par. It really comes down to viewfinder and battery. The D850 battery lasts about 3X most EVF's out today. Photogs out in the field, far away from battery power really appreciate that. Re. buttons vs. menus, the contra to this is that many buttons are customizable through menus.
Hi Timothy,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Nikon D850!
D750 and D850 are hands down the best DSLRs I spent my money on

The only way you could use your Sigma lens on a Nikon is to buy an adapter if it was at all possible. You would be better off buying a lens with the Nick on F Mount

Thanks 🙏 so much for stopping by to comment ThePixelVentures. I really appreciate it.
Hello, Ben. Recently, I became interested in cameras, so I searched various camera models of Sony, Canon, and Nikon on the Internet and fell in love with d850😅
Recently, however, the camera market is changing to mirrorless model So would it be a good choice to buy a d850 even if I buy a camera later this year or next year?😀
I wonder what you think because you have experienced various cameras on nikon.
If you have nothing and you are just getting your first camera, then I would go to a Z6 or Z7 to start with
@@667NMP Thank you for your kind answer 😊I recently bought a d750 and 50.8 lens through a used transaction I take your opinion for granted at the moment😁Because Nikon will no longer release the dslr model, and a new z model is scheduled to be released around the end of the year😅
However, the price of mirrorless cameras and lenses is still expensive, so I would like to upgrade to d850 after I gain enough camera function and skills with d750😉
I think you can take a nice picture with the D850 for a few years if you have the F-mount's top lens
@@On3legs Thank you for your answer. I recently bought d750&50.8 lens considering the entrance ability and my bank account situation😂
I bought 85.8 lenses yesterday, so I'm going to buy either 24-70 or 24-120 lenses and 70-200 lenses if I have a chance😁I want to study the camera function and how to take pictures with d750 and then settle down with d850.

@@On3legs overall it's a better lens. Plus you get the VIBRATION CONTROL, as well as the extra reach...
Yes I agree, the 850 is a fantastic camera and probably a good buy in the used market but if I am going to change camera there are some other things to consider. Size, weight and I really want a flip screen. When your camera bag is full every gram counts if you walking for a whole day. One of the downsides with a mirrorless is what I understand is that the sensor seems to attract dust so you have to be careful when changing lenses.
hm...FX D850 also collect dust too. I bought New D850 at SGD 3301 at amazon, 3 month ago .
D850 has a tilting screen too. Easier way to reduce weight is to leave the lenses you don’t use at home. Most people I see on my workshops own too many lenses. One lens is lighter than 4 😊

They wont warrantee it but they will repair it for $$ if it's a USA model. If it's not good luck getting repair work done by Nikon.

Exactly a working D800 is great in 2023. Recently, I bought 2 D800 and all of them had the backfocus problem. After that, I was disappointed of DSLR. I think that my next camera will be a mirrorless Z6 II because the AF would be much better.

Hey John Vander Ploeg, thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it 😊. Make sure you join my private ‘On3legs Photography Group’ on Facebook.
Sony Alpha A7R IV or Nikon D850
I never liked the Sony cameras. I found the fact they were more software driven a down side. I really like having all my controls as dials and buttons, Sony had a lot of adjustments hidden in the software, might have changed since I last held one.
A7R4 is inferior to Nikon D850, 850 is much richer in parameters.
Second hand will cost u between 2000.00 and 3000.00 in 2022. Not 1700 or less ? Not sure why my original post was deleted ?
Not sure either. If you hunt you can get them cheaper. Good value at $2k though
Sound good to me. You have Nikon warranty as well. Enjoy
Nikon D780 vs Nikon z6ii which is better than buying wedding shoot in villages
both great cameras!

Thanks 🙏 so much for stopping by to comment OneEyedPhotographer. I really appreciate it.
The D850 is the top camera still as good and if not better than the Z . battery last way longer.
Love my Nikons. Used them since 1992. Canon and Sony shooters would be much better photographers, if they didn’t spend so much time bagging them!😃🙏
Thank you for your feedback Steve Grindle 😊 I am glad you enjoyed it. Let me know if you have any suggestions for future video topics.
Yeah maybe the Z8 will drive prices down. The D850 will always be popular though.
Mmmm ... after shooting Canon SLR's and DSLR's for 30 plus years, I moved to mirrorless the day Sony released the a7R in 2013.
GFX is great too. Different format. Curios, What can’t you shoot with a DSLR that you can on a Mirrorless

I think they will be around for a long time to come on the second hand market, as they do last a long time.
