The best advice that i learned from Armand the watch guy, is don't buy a luxury watch until you have 10 times the price of it in your Bank account, when you purchase one you add to your collection but u add also maintenance and unexpected damages that can happen in future

you don't need that much, as long as you have 25k to 35k in cash, and earn at least 30k plus is fine. You don't need millions of money to enjoy nice things. You just deploy a small amount of income to have some fun. Remember you are going to get this money back ( a good percentage) when you move it.

The Explorer is an example of the sum being more than its parts. It is one of the few watches that carries decades of history and mystique; from Ian Fleming's choice to it's origins on Hillary's climb to the summit of Everest. I've worn mine for 20 years in all parts of the world, Antartica to the opera. It's almost always the right time and place for the Explorer. And when it gets noticed, you get noticed, and that can often work out quite favorably.

For the 'one and done' question, I would suggest the JLC Master Control date (blue dial only). It's an unconventional choice yet I personally own it because I love the slate blueish-gray sunburst dial with baby blue outer minute track and don't attend enough formal gatherings to justify the price of a Reverso. The baby blue minute track dresses down the watch and makes it more versatile for casual settings when a collared shirt isn't required.

I kind of get the one and done watch concept; most people are simply not watch geeks- one 'nice' watch is more than enough to last a lifetime. It can certainly do black tie events although I don’t think it would stretch to white tie (but how many of those are there these days). A blue dial Aqua Terra is a close second.
