    I was a Canadian Infantry member back in the day before the JTF2 and special Operations Command, had a lot of friends go to the JTF2 and the like. They are switched on as a group. Top Soldiers and the best of the best.

    I am a Canadian Ranger, a reserve branch of our military. When you were out on patrol using a snowmobile, you absolutely need to cover your face because it is freaking cold out there! When it is minus 40 or colder, and you have the wind from the movement, you really want to protect yourself as much as you can. Which is why we don't wear helmets out there on patrol, because you can't keep warm enough while wearing one. Unlike other parts of the military, we provide our own gear. I wear goggles, and have a big beard to help keep me warm while on a snowmobile. Sometimes a scarf as well, so that you can warm the air just before you breathe in.

      why bring back the CAR? there is no mission set for it. There barely was the when it existed, and there is a barely a mission set for CANSOF units.

      other than fancy berets there is no need for an airborne unit in the CAF they can't even man a proper battalion let alone another regiment

    Canada has a pathetic lack of ability to deploy our forces on a global scale. I'm not just talking about logistics and transport. We only have the ability to deploy very small contingencies at a time. Like a single navy ship, or a small squadron of CF-18s. We literally just don't have the equipment to be an effective force on any standalone mission. So much needs to be done to improve our military and it's going to take a long time.

      You are mostly right. The thing you are getting wrong is about the navy. Are frigates can be deployed and not just one at a time. We can send multiple out from the west and the east coasts. But yes our military is in a very dark period.

      So yes, we are in what we'd call a 'decade of darkness' - and if that sounds familiar it's because we experienced a decade of darkness during the last LPC era as well (albeit for very different reasons)
      I'm so tempted to write a bloody thesis paper as a response to your comment, but I'll skip all that and get to the positive stuff...
      - The RCAF can deploy 2 ATF (air task forces) in an Article 5 situation. This includes 1 Polaris refueller/transport, and 6 Hornets
      (Canada has 5 Polaris transports, 2 of which are equipped as refuellers for the Hornets. We recently signed to replace the fleet with 9 MRTT's - all of which are refueller capable, so that's a massive increase in capacity)

    Our Canadian military is a bit of a joke right now, unfortunately. Too comfortable with having strong allies, and it would be so monumental to get to the position of having a well rounded, effective military. Even if right now we actually started meeting our NATO funding commitments, it's been decades of letting things decay.
    Focusing our efforts on specialization is one way that we could start actually getting back on track... and Special Forces is one thing we're good at. We are never going to be a US, (or any time soon a, Finnish, UK, or even Australian) military, but let's focus on what were good at for now....❤

      My father was stationed for a time in Labrador while he was in the US Air Force during the Cold War. Canada's contributions to the defense of the West were fantastic and underappreciated at the time.
      I think the deterioration of the Canadian military began in earnest after the end of the Cold War. Too many people seemed to buy into the "end of history" nonsense, that there was no longer a need for defense spending. The Great Game, version 2.0, was on again. China and Russia understood this; most nations in the West did not. Putin's invasion of Ukraine was the wake up call everyone needed.
      This decline must be reversed to defend Canada's interests in the polar regions. The Russians are trying to dominate the Arctic for economic and military reasons. The United States will defend Alaska, but Canada will have to do some heavy lifting to defend its territory up north. Neither country benefits from Russian domination of the Arctic. Canada needs to build up its anti-ship, anti-submarine, and anti-air capabilities to put Russian forces at risk if they start something.
      In addition to robust anti-access/area denial (A2/AD), having some rapid deployment forces relatively nearby would not be a bad thing. Let the Russians know that JTF2 or the like could show up at any time if they start encroaching on Canadian territory.

      The UK has gotten too reliant on the US too...they think America will fight their entire battle for them so they constantly downgrade their military...its ridiculous.

    • @MichaelScheele
      @MichaelScheele 25 днів тому

      @@kevinschindler618, agreed. While the UK need not build up to WW II levels again, they need to contribute more to the defense of NATO. The tyranny of distance makes reinforcement from the United States limited in the short run. Major European powers have to step up.

    • @KenMcGeachy
      @KenMcGeachy 25 днів тому +3

      @MichaelScheele I agree. The Canadian North has been neglected for too long as well; our geographical isolation from the rest of the world is much less than it used to be in that area. And even with new Canadian polar vessels currently entering service, if you compare the Russian fleet to what Canada has, it's alarming. Focusing on what/where we can make a difference is important, given the limited budget that Canada fields. Hopefully our aerial drone fleet will focus on the patrolling of our vast northern border...

    The Canadian military really is in a depressing state. Our CF-18’s are about 40 years old, with its replacement (F-35 block 4) beginning deliveries with 4 in 2026, with alleged deliveries of 18/yr until all 88 aircraft are delivered, somewhere in the 2030s. That would put the CF-18 in its 50s by the time Canada can retire the fleet, which means more costs being put in to keeping them operational. There’s also the issue of the pilot shortage, along with the shitty things going on behind closed doors in the military.
    Beyond that, we also have to look towards the North, as the glaciers continue to melt, opening up what could be a very important shipping lane, which Russia could potentially capitalize on due to the fact that there isn’t anything the Royal Canadian Navy has that could respond to a Russian naval threat in the North.

    There’s a few places you can get more info. The world’s longest shot was by two JTF-2 snipers and one of the spotters Dallas Alexander has done a few podcasts. Check out Shawn Ryan’s podcast with him.
    There’s a channel called Direct Action run by Randy Turner. He’s a veteran of JTF-2 and did 16 years with the unit. He does videos on his gear setup, weapons, ammunition and even clothing.

    I love gow the comments are having the same issue as we US does as well. And ironically theres only two former JTF2 operatores talkibg about it. One of which is Dallas Alexander and the other is unkown. About Dallas Alexander he was talkibg about the reason people go to elite units is because of our capabilities and such including our training. And thats begin talked down or veiwed as a bad idea, he made a clear statement that, we made the longest shot in history and nobody is even talking about it or the word isnt getting out and thats a bad thing because the command is insulting their capabilities and saying they arent professionals in such ways, Dallas is pisses about the canadian military, As much as we are with the US military. Please nit that this isnt his quote on quote of what i was saying just giving people the general idea of how pathetic the Canadian Military is currently, even though im american its a shame to see our brothers also have a pathetic military
