Glad you took this video before the PCC cars were replaced and the line was extended. Back in the mid 1960's my friends and I would take the subway from Brooklyn to Herald Square and then jump on the PATH system to Hoboken or Newark just to check out all the old railroad and light rail infrastructure west of the Hudson before so much of it disappeared for ever. We were also lucky enough to make one round trip on the Newark City Subway system in an old PCC car painted in the old gray Public Service livery.
I used to love riding the old PCC cars from my grandparent's house in N. Newark downtown with my mom back in the 90's when they still had those cars. It's sad that Newark doesn't realize that the line is 80 years old as of this year and no history had been done. I think I will do it!
My dad was a trolley mechanic for over 30 years for NJ Transit. He was proud of how they kept their trollies, now subways I guess, clean and free of grafitti, and well repaired. This was over 30 years ago that he retired. But he remained proud till he passed away.
Our family house was on N 6th street, trolly tracks were rt behind our house, other side was branch brook park. Mom and me rode them in the 70s...they were painted green back than...
This is neat, I left Newark 20 years ago and my heart aches for it. (I love Newark)...I rode the city subway every day to work for all of the 90's. Sad that it changed. I remember at one time in the 80's that ride could be so jerky and bumpy it literally knocked people out of their seats.
Trip times were shorter with these than the new ones! I wonder if there is any video of trolleys when they extended throughout Newark streets? That would be a real treat!
I have antique milk jugs from a dairy in Newark. My grandmother was born there in 1915. She told me when I was about 13 that the area used to be beautiful, pristine and clean. After WW2 the area was hit with a major economic decline. That entire area of Newark, Elizabeth, Hillside, Irvington, Linden & Rahway are all colonial era. Very rich in history yet, no one seems to know anything.
In the movie Dirty Harry, Clint Eastwood takes one of the San Francisco PCC trolley subway cars. Neat to see that in a movie. Also, the city of Toronto has a couple of remaining PCC cars that they use on their lines including their underground stations - I'm not sure if this is still the case - but you might be able to see a few videos on UA-cam.
Interesting video! I saw one of the old Newark trolley cars in the restoration shop at the SeaShore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, ME. I hear that, when it's fixed up, they plan on putting it on their demo line. Can't wait for that to happen!
Hello, I was wondering if I could get permission to use clips from this video? I am working on a documentary about transit proposals in New Jersey and this would be perfect for when I talk about Newark. You will be given full credit in the video of course.
Enjoyable video! Several of these cars are now preserved in museums. #26 is being comprehensively restored. Learn more at: www.baltimorestreetcarmuseum.org/donate

Pretty cool, this is the only PCC ive seen actually used as a subway trolley

In Philadelphia Pennsylvania PTC and then Septa used PCC trolleys in its subway surface cars which ran under ground for many decades!
I remember ridding those cars back in the 60s. I'm pretty sure they used to be painted green.
Actually they were gray in 1960’s, with a blue stripe and Public Service Coordinated Transit lettering
Thank you for a Bit of Newark Trolley car History lest we forget. 😊
I wonder do they have those cars restored in a museum somewhere?😳
I remember these type cars when I was a kid. Probably lone gone now.
I think these same cars are still in use in Missouri i think. NJ transit transported them there i believe.
