- Donald Trump, somber and bandaged, accepted the GOP presidential nomination on Thursday at the Republican National Convention in a speech that described in detail the assassination attempt that could have ended his life just five days earlier before laying out a sweeping populist agenda, particularly on immigration.
The 78-year-old former president, known best for his bombast and aggressive rhetoric, began his acceptance speech with a softer and deeply personal message that drew directly from his brush with death. Moment by moment, the crowd listening in silence, Trump described standing onstage in Butler, Pennsylvania, with his head turned to look at a chart on display when he felt something hit his ear. He raised his hand to his head and saw immediately that it was covered in blood.

What happened to separation of church and state?
The establishment clause of the first amendment ensures that there will be no state-supported church. That has absolutely NOTHING to do with individual citizens bringing their religious views to bear on public matters. In fact, it is assumed that everyone WILL bring their views to bear through the democratic process, and people are free to vote based on whatever justification they have...religious or not.
With that in mind, it is simply nonsensical to protest that “religion” needs to stay out of an issue. People are free to vote based on whatever rationale they choose in a free, secular country. Secular means there is no state supported church, not that our laws are supposed to be devoid of religious justification…Christian or otherwise.
This is why it’s also illogical for anyone to accuse anyone else of “imposing” their beliefs on others in the public square. Literally every law imposes someone’s beliefs on someone else. The type of justification you have for your belief has no impact on whether it is an imposition on another. That’s just the nature of laws and the democratic process.
