Nobody who is experienced with the Canadian wilderness goes hiking at this time of a year and into a bear territory, and camping is even worse choice, and takes his dog with him. Dogs either will behave as a prey or hero, both reactions will agitate a bear and bring him on the dog's people.
Many people go hiking in the "Canadian wilderness" this time of year both to camp and hunt. The bear was the problem in this situation not people. Spare us the BEAR GOOD PEOPLE BAD nonsense.
Hopefully that bear is dead. There's no reference as to whether this was a defensive or predatory attack. But, unfortunately people's lives are more valuable than bears'.
People should always carry firearms in wilderness areas. My girlfriend and I vacation, almost every year, about 150 miles north of lake Superior. We rent cabins, go boating fishing and enjoy nature. Both of us always carry.
Lol no....if that's how you feel you either have a irrational fear of bears or live in a bubble. Banff has 4.5 million visitors each year, how many people get attacked by a bear each year? You're going to make all your safety decisions based off a 2 in 4.5 million odds? Odds of getting struck by lighting are less than 1 million....You're waaaaay more likely to get murdered in Canada than attacked by a bear.....do you carry a shotgun in your car at all times? It's irrational. Coming from a guy who's job is getting dropped off by helicopter in remote areas of northern Manitoba, walking 15-20K per day alone.....Heck, we used to have "trained" people carry shotguns and half the time they didn't bother loading them or they'd accidentally point them at people. We even had a "trained" person who took a bear guard course (yes, a real thing) and when he saw a polar bear he literally threw the gun and ran away...I've come across many bears, caribou, moose, wolverines, wolves....very few negative interactions. I'll take my chances with some bear spray.
If you get stocked by a grizzly, the chances are you’re going to be dead. Now you can have all the bear spray you want probably ain’t going to save your life because I would imagine these two people had bear spray. Studies have proven that bear spray is most effective. You can literally find peer reviewed journals with a quick google search. Stop spreading misinformation.
People saying it's best to use a gun probably don't understand that you'd need to make several very accurate, perfect shots under extreme stress and adrenaline to stop a bear. Very unlikely the average person could pull that off, you'd be more likely to enrage it further. Bear spray isn't perfect, but you don't need to hit the bear with it, you just need to aim in its general direction, as the spray forms a cloud which irritates the bear's senses (eyes, nose). And, as the video says, it's best to hike in larger groups (4+) in bear country. Their eyesight is bad, so if your group bunches together, the bear will think it's a massive beast, and probably bail. RIP to this couple and dog. And shame a bear had to be put down as well.
100% The people saying this also say "they are very proffecient with firearms". Which clearly they aren't if they think they can get off an accurate shot within a few seconds. Bear spray is proven to be more effective.
@@potholeproud4598It doesn't matter what the wind is when a charging bear is 5m in from you. It makes a barrier between you and the bear....betters odds than 1 or 2 bullets. Leave the dogs at home if you want to hike in grizzly country. Actually do not go there! Dogs bark. They draw attention of wildlife and the dog brings the bear back to the humans. I do not believe they were experienced. Leave the dogs at home. Sorry they died. Pay attention people.
Poor bear, as always, a victim of people who don't respect the bears rules! And who, for god"s sake is chosing to be at night in such a place where bears are at their homes! and in time when they intensively wonder around in search of food!
Disagree on that point. These campers were minding their own business. The killer bear was not behaving normally. It was not healthy. A healthy bear would not make a predatory attack against two humans and see them as a food source. It was an old female grizzly with no cubs.
Pistols and shot guns hardly ever work when a bear is charging, giving you the element of surprise. They can be on top of you in a second. Carry knives! Have them in different spots on your body. While he's hugging you and biting your head, stab him in the back of his head, eyes or in the heart. Never carry one weapon. Two is one and one is none.

That's definitely BS. Charging grizzlies have shrugged off multiple hits from shotguns and rifles- one 300 pound mother bear was shot twelve times with high-calibar weapons before she dropped, barely thirty feet away from the rangers she'd charged at- and a pistol isn't going to even faze them. Either don't carry, or carry something like a shotgun with buckshot, which has a proven track-record of taking grizzlies down.
@@atlas3556 Additionally you can also look up the defensive use of pistols to take down other predators such as mountain lions even large animals such a charging moose. The ballistics of being shot even with a 9mm can have devastating effects to an animal.

Happens more then rare still missing people
Hopefully that bear is dead. There's no reference as to whether this was a defensive or predatory attack. But, unfortunately people's lives are more valuable than bears'.
Even better don’t go camping in Bear territory….
So pretty much no camping anywhere in Canada?
Humans caused fires and food shortage, what do you do expect bears to do?
People should always carry firearms in wilderness areas. My girlfriend and I vacation, almost every year, about 150 miles north of lake Superior. We rent cabins, go boating fishing and enjoy nature. Both of us always carry.
Bear spray is more effective than firearms, although it is good to have alternatives
@@krabzmorningstar6240 My girlfriend and I are very experienced with firearms.
@rottenanimal619 That's what someone said to me once who was about to shoot through their tent at a 'bear' with another tent of people behind it....
@@Cobbster420 Never been there.
If you get stocked by a grizzly, the chances are you’re going to be dead. Now you can have all the bear spray you want probably ain’t going to save your life because I would imagine these two people had bear spray. The best defence go out there with some type of firearm, there’s lots of places where you can go hiking that you are not in the national park that you can carry a firearm with you better play it safe than sorry
well one can't have a firearm in Canada unless its registered right?
@@anthonys3631 that is correct every hunter that is in Canada has a registered weapon. Lol scared much
@@cephalotus1013Of a grizzly bear? Yes. They will rip your face off just for looking at them.
It should be legal to carry rifles or shotguns in parks for defense.
Why? Very rare hikers and campers get attacked. being knowledgeable about bears and cougars and what to do is more effective than caring a rifle.
We will assume you mean "defence"
Canadians, as usual, apologize on behalf of the bear....
Of, course. We're very nice people, eh? 😎
another reason we need to be able to carry a gun
Bear spray will be efficient if the wind direction is correct and doesn’t end up in your face.
@@potholeproud4598It doesn't matter what the wind is when a charging bear is 5m in from you. It makes a barrier between you and the bear....betters odds than 1 or 2 bullets. Are you going to get effected from the spray? Yes. Go watch videos of bears being sprayed or read some peer reviewed articles. It's like saying pepper spray is useless for a cop if they also get some effects from the spray....it happens...
@@cephalotus1013 keep telling yourself that
A park Warden once told me "bear spray on a grizzly will just give it a spicy meal"@@potholeproud4598

Oh it was definitely holding them down with his huge paws while they were still alive and tearing at them and ripping out chunks of flesh like they were a salmon
the bear didn't eat them, just murdered them
You take your chances, sad for the people, sad for the bear. I have heard that most attacks occur in the middle of nowhere, by adult male bears. He was a dominant bear, just like every other animal, there are dominants, and submissives.
Most bears are passive and shy, they are very cautious of humans, normally they don't just immediately attack humans at first.
Rule one about grizzly country, carry a magnum rifle
Or hike with a slower friend, and a throwable weight dog on a breakaway leash.

Poor dog. This is what happens when you don't respect their territory. Not enough places are left for the poor animals anyway because of terrible humans.
not all humans are terrible.
Yet in all state and national parks you're not allowed to carry a gun. We need common sense gun deregulation in this country.

I'm saddened for the people killed and their families, but when a person goes into the habitat of wild animals, this is the risk they take.
The cbc is not aware of international politics.
Probably shouldnt hang out in areas with bears. Unless you have guns. Oh wait its Canada.
Leave the dogs at home if you want to hike in grizzly country. Actually do not go there! Dogs bark. They draw attention of wildlife and the dog brings the bear back to the humans. I do not believe they were experienced. Leave the dogs at home. Sorry they died. Pay attention people.
Exactly!
Lol, you have no idea what you are talking about. Armchair bear attack and gun expert. What a joke. Shush.

Bear spray is okay but if we were allowed to carry firearms that would be even better. Pistols have a 97% rate of success rate of deterring a charging bear.
Yep, a good ol Glock 20 does the trick.
Reference that statistic.

This is a tragedy that was completely preventable. We all know this area is one of the main areas of the grizzlies. It’s their home yet people, experienced or not feel they can venture there.
