- CNC Machining a Stainless Steel Turtle - Last year we gave Titan a real turtle for his birthday, but that one disappeared the next day. So this year we decided to machine a turtle out of 316L Stainless Steel to replace it. Using Kennametals new coated tools as well as DN solution's BVM 5700 3-axis mill and the DVF 5000 5-axis mill.

if you don't know machining, this is a very expensive, very intense job. Probably quite expensive to have something like this made at retail prices
Yeah your best option would be to hope they'd run a few hundreds of them to lower the cost per part otherwise it would be an insane price for a stainless steel turtle 😆😆
Had a 'simple' piece done a few years ago. First piece cost 500$, second run of 25 brang down individual prices to under 100, yet I had people asking me 'wHy dOeS iT cOsT sO mUcH?!'.
They expected a cnc part to cost the same as a large volume piece bent from sheetmetal.
I have to say- after explaining it thrice, I just told people who asked: If you ask that, then this is not the piece for you. Please just buy one made from metal.
No kidding, not to mention the time it takes to program it and create fixtures and load up and touch off tools ect...
You know... you could get it 3D resin printed in 64k, for probably $20 including postage and insurance.. use that as a master to make a silicone mold, then you can do lost wax/investment casting for next to nothing.
@Tigrisshark exactly. You must of had a need for a machined tolerances/billet grain strength, as you could of had them cast for pennies.

You can electroplate the stainless steel with nickel-strike and then gold or silver plate it
Electropolishing would make it shinier and prevent it from tarnishing.
Just for your information, you guys machined a Tortoise, NOT a Turtle. If that's what you put in the water then it probably drowned because they can't swim 🤣

There are several online platforms like Grabcad, Thingiverse, and Turbosquid that I have used.
@@barrysetzer i know about grabcad, and thingiverse but it is very hard to find a solid model this intricate that you can use to machine.

Bro, I swear you can see particle accelerations @ 5:30. Much like a cloud chamber, you can see ionizing radiation in the form of alpha and beta particles interacting with the debris cloud created by the laser.
