    In Sheffield UK hardly anyone has a drive or garage: there are tens of thousands of households parking their cars on the street. I don't even have a car, but I'd love one of these chargepoints outside my house that *any* EV could use, not just my neighbours.

      In a busy street it can be difficult to find parking and most likely to find other cars in front of your house.

      I think this is not that much of a bad tradeoff. Still, this is just a gen 1 implementation. They can always improve and minimize the design in the future.

    Usually neighbours don't park in the same position. So, would it be that a few neighbours have these chargers with a sharing facility so that dependent on where their parked they can have access.

    I think this is a really good solution.
    People who are saying you can't lug that around everywhere. Remember, this is gen1 implementation, which can be improved upon.
    Also, if this gets implemented, as demand and popularity grow, they can partner up with EV manufactures to build the tech needed into the car itself, making it so that you only need the connecting wire to charge from a ground outlet on the pavement. Making it much, much more feasible in the long term, especially in locations constrained with land availability.

    In Boston there's already folks camping street spots with traffic cones. I can't imagine how annoying it would be to come home to an ICE vehicle in my spot and have to park 3 or 4 blocks away ON TOP of paying for the monthly charge account and the hardware investment.

    £99 a month is about 120KW of rapid charging in the UK about 400miles of driving. That is quite expensive before you have spent a penny on electricity even cheap electricity, with no guarantee that you can charge your car. Maybe if it was £20 a month I would consider it.

    I always like 1 time price, not 120/month forever. Everybody can calculate how much it is after 10 years. I use standard ccs 50 kw public charger and I use about 50 euros a month, no home charging, this works fine without 120 a month extra payment. Of course I waste some time when charging, but I have free time to do it.

    Having lived in a suburban Neighbour hood in Vancouver. The street parking was non reserved and was always an issue not getting a spot in front of our house. Unless your could “reserve”’your spot with a permit from the municipality. Than it might work.

    • @chaos.corner
      @chaos.corner 2 роки тому +2

      The problem with reserving spots is that they are public roads. Even if the will is there, that can cause legal obstacles. Reserved spaces often leads to inefficient allocation of resources and problems with use by tradesmen, etc.

    Ultimately, some sort of wireless charging will be a game changer. It doesn't have to be on the ground. The service could be on a box on top of a pole by the curb. Just pull up and park adjacent to it and it connects wirelessly to the mating point on the side of your vehicle. It would work a lot better than embedded in the ground. It would be easier to service, no dirt, grime,rain, snow, ice, leafs, trash to deal with. With have millions and millions of mailboxes on the curbs already.

    Fantastic approach - the market is enormous - and they have the risk management sorted! Assuming the owner controls the power and pays that bill it would be useful if the base had a RFID chip that identifies the lance and connects that to the account of the owner. The user pays for the power with a fee to the owner using a credit card or account. The owner can invite people to use her connection and sign them on. That seems like the best case approach.

    Municipal installation in public streets should by default be linked to charge throttling. As a user will usually connect not every day but maybe every two days, an overnight charger session would allow the battery to be quite topped up.

I think that is great if it is well executed. We all are familiar with terrible charging in America, anything but Tesla, so something needs done to get us straightened out here as crappy charging will slow the switch to ev and give fudsters free ammo!

    A popular UA-cam Program personality just released a video about the failure of his $95,000 Ford Truck. He had an App that showed him where the free charging stations were at Casinos in Vegas. Will Prowse was very disappointed that most of these ‘Charge Point’ Chargers had damaged nozzles. It was not said, but I surmised that a competitor must of had some dudes go out and damage those Chargers offering free or cheap charging. I’m guessing ’Charge Point’ would love to go into a partnership since they already have the power where they want it. It’s a bad investment to have damaged units out there and I’d everyone had there own Plunger Connection Charge Point would be making much more profit off their infrastructure.

    Yes. Sharing with your neighbor is most efficient and cheapest. So why are we talking about privatized solutions for charging and transportation? Privatizing is by definition *not* sharing. Both Musk and his fans are kidding themselves about saving the planet because their for profit solutions (socialized solutions can have zero or even negative profits) are incredibly wasteful and inefficient. 95% of cars on the road are parked. A socialized solution could theoretically eliminate 95% of the cost. But - self driving as a service! - you say? Yah, so why exactly does Musk get to profit from (and own) all of the data (read: unpaid labor) of every Tesla owner that trains his fleet for free? Every Tesla owner is getting ripped off by Elon because- like all consumers - they don’t own the means of production. And they go along with this because, like Musk, they don’t want to make any sacrifice to save the planet - aka - take the f***in bus! But the bus isn’t on demand? 1) it could be if we socialized Tesla and 2) all public trans is deliberately underfunded in order to sell more cars. (That’s been going on in America for about a century).
    Use your car to charge the grid or your home? Hey. Here’s a thought. How about instead of using privatized, individualized lithium to power the grid, we use socialized sand and liquid air or metal batteries which would be orders of magnitude cheaper and more efficient. Yah. But then you wouldnt have your fancy car, now woudja?

      The problem is, rolling it out for everyone is not going to happen currently. The infrastructure isn't there and it would be a huge waste as most of them would go unutilized. Meanwhile, people want to charge their vehicles today. Oh wait, you're one of those people. Never mind.

    Another dream product whose infrastructure set up is too major. How are you getting the power to this little product?? The city would have to dig up the sidewalks to install these, but The entire sidewalk because you still have to run the cables. I wouldn’t invest a cent. And if the city has to pull up the sidewalk, they will probably install their own product. And frankly the pole this is attached to seems like an easy target for vandalism or even problematic for pedestrians walking or riding a bike on the sidewalk.

    • @chaos.corner
      @chaos.corner 2 роки тому

      It looks like it takes power from the owner's residence so that's reasonable. I imagine there are legal obstructions to having the owner run these off their property like this but there's probably the will in the UK to pass legislation to allow these. Probably depends on jurisdiction in the states. Vandalism could be an issue. Pedestrians navigate obstructions in the street all the time so that's not such an issue. Bicycles are supposed to be in the road or bike lanes.

      These are myths based on thinking from a few years ago.
      There are plenty of metals for Tesla's nickel and iron-based chemistries. Even lithium is extremely plentiful and the limitation is refining which is why Tesla has built their own lithium refinery. Tesla plans to completely eliminate cobalt from its chemistries which is the root of most ethical, environmental, and economic problems with electric cars.
      The Electrical grid usage increased by less than half a percent last year from EVs. Even if every new car was electric it would only increase grid usage by 5% per year because it takes 20-30 years to replace all used cars. Solar, wind, and battery storage has actually increased faster than the electricity needs of electric cars.
