Just gave hook grip try this evening. My training partner completely ruptured his left bicep at his meet a couple weeks ago. I’ve been having some tendon pain as well. I made it to 455 my first try and my pull is mid 6s. I’m happy with that start and these vids are extremely helpful.
Aesthetic well it’s still only 25% less weight than his one rep max, so it is still pretty heavy, even for him. However, for a one rep max test, he can probably excel far past 750 (as he already proved), but any more reps and even 750 will easily become difficult.
The "light weight" in that example was 3-400 lbs. He lifted around 750 at the time, so he started with around half that for training his hook grip. Pay attention! ;)
Thanks to you I switched to the hook grip and it changed my DL completely. Better technique, way more symmetrical, no more biceps pain (I had it from time to time) and it feels like there is really no limit anymore on grip strength. I got so used to it, that I don't feel any pain. 1RM or 15 reps, it doesn't matter. It just feels great now :)
If anyone has back problems, the hook grip is way better as well. I've got scoliosis and mixed will mess my back up after a while but the hook grip feels great. So much smoother, like Cailer said.
I’ve been hook gripping all my heavy pulls (relatively, I’m nowhere near you obviously) recently and it’s made my deadlift shoot up a good chunk in this little acute phase of switching from mixed to hooked. The symmetry just makes everything more stable/strong, I agree. You can focus on keeping your spine neutral instead of keeping your spine neutral AND preventing “twist”. Not to mention mixed grip fails eventually
Dude Cailer. So glad you are making videos. I dig the simplicity and straight to the pointness. It would be cool to see what your training was like from the past 3 years has been like and your philosophy on building such a big deadlift so quickly. Thanks man. Subscribed
This guy knows what he is talking about. My boy friend recently switched to using the hook grip on me and he hasn't lost his tight grip as of yet. He used to use the conventional grip on me when he would pull my sword out of it's scabbard if you catch my drift, and his hand would slip when he would bring me inside him, now that issue is resolved. Thanks Dr deadlift! Me and my partners love life has been saved.
Can you do a video on bracing and breathing in the deadlift and bent over row. I don't know when to breathe when rowing so I just hold the breath until I'm done but that means I do it too fast to make maximum gains.
I love how he gives the example of his gf and states that people can do it with small hands... Dude her hands are huge for a girl! Mine are even smaller than those
At the end (~14:30) you mention how small female olympic weightlifters manage to use hook grip despite being small. However olympic weightlifters use a female bar (smaller diameter)... So it's not exactly comparable to female powerlifters who have to use a larger male bar. Appreciated the girlfriend demo!
Hey Cailer, 2 questions. 1 You said you dont do deadlifts and rows/shrugs in one day, so what's your split? 2. How do you implement rack(or whatever they are called, the ones you pull from pallets) pulls into your routines?
cailer just found out about this and only respect bro. thanks for sharing your tips it really helps all the way your an inspiration bro. people not following you are missing out.
Pretty sure less than 1% of the human population will ever have to worry about a bicep tear in the 700-800 lb deadlift range but I get what he is saying. I wish I could pull 700-800 lbs! Great video
Rick Stark because less than 1% could still be even .9% which is still way off, just clarifying for people curious of more accurate percentage What’s your point
I m a french young, powerbodybuilder and yes, the mixed grip limit me, when I push on my deadlift I have troubles on my conventionnal deadlift and I feel less better on it.. I will try this grip on my next workout !
My limiting factor on deadlift has always been grip strength. I pulled on my last DL workout with the hook grip and it worked awesome. Painful but awesome... Thanks for taking the time to do this video.
I've started using hookgrip because I reached the max weight for pronated grip and the bar started rolling. I hate using mixed grip, it actually makes me feel queasy ! I have small, female hands and can hook OK and yes, it does hurt at first but it helps if you start on lower weights ( a deload week worked well for me). Think about it, lots of things "hurt" or are uncomfortable when you first start in the lifting game. This is one reason why I used to hate barbell squats because I didn't like the shoulder discomfort. But like riding a bicycle something just clicks into place and it works and now I cannot remember how weird it used to feel and love squats !
Been trying to get my hook grip in order for a while now, this is the best video that really helped me out! Sticking to the plan of getting that thumb under the bar. Thanks a lot Cailer!!
Found you from Jujimufu, you should make more videos man your stuff rocks!!! Mad props to you on being such a BEAST!! Going to try the hookgrip tomorrow
Awesome video Cailer, I totally agree with everything. The only thing I think you may have left out is how some long time mixed grip pullers might be weaker at first cause they're used to pulling from an asymmetrical starting point (such as hips shifted away from the under hand). Also still waiting on the stache bro, gotta set your next record with it
i cant imagine how many times one has bleed from this but im gonna do it too, cause grip is probably the thing that causes limitations for us all in terms of how much we can all really do, thank you for sharing bratha
Another way to describe natural strength difference between pronate and supinate grips is the idea of saving someone from falling off of a cliff or a bridge: if you were hiking with heavy packs and someone (who you care about) slipped to the edge of the cliff, you would instinctively reach out to grab them using a pronated (or at most a neutral) grip. If you grabbed their wrist and they still fell and you had to hold their entire body weight almost directly under you, it would be stronger if your grip were pronated. This is true for the majority pf people, though I assume there are some exceptions.
I do a regular grip when I deadlift for the most part to increase my forearm and hand strength. Now, when I get to the point where I need to meet my reps, but only my grip weakened, then I will switch to a hook grip. This is how I feel I get the most out of this lift, and recommend others with weak forearms to try it as well. You still can hit your set reps while working your forearms and grip to the limit. But the hook grip for sure allows you to keep pushing when you’re about to drop the weight from your weakening grip.
Recently went back to sumo pulling, definitely going to have to work this grip into my program. Worked up to 3 plates and was already feeling the tightening on my left bicep, first thought was this things gonna shoot across the room. Look forward to my next deadlift night to try these.
Thanks for the video, i was really interested in how you can actually grip that kind of weight. I have seen you on Mark Bell's channel and was very impressed by your dead lift, without wraps, no mixed grip.

Do give it another try. Your thumbs will get used to it, just like with anything else. The first time I tried to use the hook grip with heavy weight, I thought I was going to break my thumbs it was that painful doing it for 5 reps. By the 4th time I tried, it felt like I had been doing it my whole life.
I have been doing the hook grip yesterday i hit 525 and my max is 585. Am taking 10 pounds jumps goint on the hook grip I love it and have you to thank for teaching us.
i do all my pulls with a hook grip and i love it. I never have grip issues. i remember my first year of lifting i used mixed and hated the uneven engagement of my lats. When i tried hook grip and noticed my lats were being used equally i never went back.

Yo ... when you mentioned the pec tear feeling ... I felt you bro. Its why I double over with straps when I do any deadlift but I train olympic lifts so ive always been more naturally inclined to double over and use hook anyway
As a conventional puller, the most I've ever pulled with a mixed grip was 635lbs on a stiff bar. I switched to hook grip for the first time ever last week and was able to fairly easily bang out 2x5 @ 495lbs dead-stopped. Now, granted my thumbs were bloody/numb by the time I was done, but I noticed it felt much more natural and I had 0 grip problems. Thanks for making this video. I was worried about nerves in my thumbs dying but I don't think it's true.
Awesome video. Also feel like mixed grip causes you to even dip forward a bit, something that doesn’t happen as much having hands in the same direction.
