The debris and parts of the funnels have been spotted in the wreckage. Funnel 1 is west of the stern section and Funnel 2 landed eastward of it. Both are in terrible condition and are barely recognizable. Funnel 3 and 4 debris has been also found scattered in the field, such as the base, the steam pipe, and whistles, indicating they broke up on their way down to the bottom, spreading their pieces about over a wider area.
There's a whole discussion thread on Encyclopedia Titanica over the funnels and mapping where their remains are. I'd link to it, but YT doesn't like that and deletes or shadowbans posts with hotlinks.

I think I know that one. It's "Have any of the funnels been located?" and it includes several really great photos, screencaps, and mosaics of the funnels' remains. It includes a bit of discussion and artwork of how everyone romantically envisioned Titanic: intact and one or more funnels still in place.

I revisited that discussion. It is sad to see the remains of the funnels. I remember watching a 3D animation of the Titanic's sinking. The music seemed to be a sad, instrumental and simplified version of either My Heart Will Go On or Rose's theme from the 1997 movie. You can search it up if you want to. I played the music in my head as I examined the photos of the remains of the funnels.

Titanic's sister, HMHS Britanic's, wreck apparently retains easily recognizable remains of all four funnels, though none still attached to the ship. This is probably due to the much shallower water in which she sank, which reduced the fall damage they took and is not habitable to the iron-eating bacteria behind Titanic's rusticles.

Thank you for sharing, but I must nit pick. I believe you're confusing the cable stays and the actual funnel shrouds. The shrouds were what surrounded the actual funnels. The shrouds were the painted surfaces we all recognize. The cable stays were the lines that held up the funnels residing within their shrouds. Ocean Liner Designs does a good job of explaining and illustrating this. Also, at least one of the funnels was discovered fully intact by Dr. Ballard during one of the early dives. So...maybe this is worth a redo? Sincerely, an appreciative fan.

Almost certainly the ship and its debris would be in much better shape than when it was found in 1985 as we know the ship has deteriorated in the 38 years since. Most likely paint would still have been visible in sections where the metal was still intact though significant rusting would have likely taken place by then. It's probable that some of the hardier woods were still present at the time, though they would have been in very poor condition and brittle in the way rotten wood gets.

@@cloudysaturnn One time I saw a modeler's rendition of what Titanic looked like right after it hit the bottom of the Atlantic. He took a plastic model kit (I believe it was the Revelle one) and meticulously split it and shaped it based on the photos that are available of the wreck, and used his imagination to fill in the gaps on what would have deteriorated before it was discovered in 1986. It was mind numbing to see, both because of the skill, determination and patience required to make such a piece of art like that, and to think about the event it represented. In my mind, I was thinking that, when the real ship looked like that, there were probably some people still alive at the Ocean's surface, struggling to survive in the 28 degree Fahrenheit water. Also, the survivors in the lifeboats, listening to the frantic voices of those in the freezing water fading as the minutes ticked by.
It was a very profound thing to see on many levels.

I was there for that whistle-blowing, though I hadn't thought much about it lately. It was February 1999. My mother, brother & I were on the first day of a long road trip, & we'd heard about this event in advance; so we allowed for a stop in her hometown of St. Paul, where this whistle was set up downtown in front of an old railroad station, presumably the Union Depot. Afterwards there was speculation it might have been louder with its original steam pressure.
FWIW this happened to fall around the time of a well-publicized visible alignment of planets in the sky.

    • @1940limited

Agreed. Steam at a much higher pressure would give you the actual sound, but may well destroy the whistles. There's a video on You Tube of the Aquitania leaving NY harbor with the whistle blowing which is probably more like how the Titanic sounded.

    • @marthastewwart
      @marthastewwart Рік тому

Steam would have made it higher pitched. Although if they knew the exact temperature, type of steam, or better yet the density (which steam is lower in density) then they could use that data to get the compressed air to match it near perfectly, as they could manipulate the air with different gases, pressure and flow rate. So while on the basis of it, yes, you are correct the whistle typically would of been at a higher continous pitched sound over its compressed air counter part. I just don't know how much that applies here. This was such a massive historic event, im willing to bet they put in the research to get that data of the steam the titanic produced and used it to get their compressed air to match in sound.

You have a video on everything. Have been going through my third Titanic phase in life and I have been watching a lot of videos recently, and while watching another one, the funnels falling caught my attention and I wondered about them. Turns out that further down in my recommendations was this video. haha Great content.

Hey Sam. I have loved your content for years. I recently dove back into the Costa Concordia disaster. Can you cover more of it in the future with re telling passenger stories or re telling crew stories like you have done on the Titanic series? You are doing a great job. Keep it up

Parts of the funnels have been found in the debris field one casing being completely flat, interesting note Lusitania funnel casings were visible on the wreck until the 1970s when they decayed so titanic's funnels are in a weird way lasted the test of time despite condition

Great channel, very empathetic way to tell this story. People in those days were so much more classy and sophisticated than us mere mortals today. If I may just give you a suggestion for a couple more videos, if you have done them already I apologize, since you covered so much already. You could do a video on icebergs, where do they form, where do they go, how long do they stay there etc. the second idea you could tells us about you Lego titanic, it is accurate? Is it good level of detail? Was it fun to put together? Etc

Thanks. It might just be me, but I find it sad that the funnels, some of Titanic's most recognizable exterior features, are not much more than mangled and nigh-unrecognizable pieces of metal scattered across the wreck.
