  • Roots of Fight - Ali vs Frazier Thrilla in Manila feat Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini with insights from Mike Tyson, Randy Couture, George Chuvalo and Mark Munoz.
Roots of Fight is proud to celebrate the greatest heavyweight boxing match of all time with a short documentary and capsule collection of apparel commemorating the final fight in Muhammad Ali and Smokin' Joe Frazier's epic trilogy.
The two hall of fame champions met in the squared circle for the last time on October 1st, 1975 at the Araneta Coliseum, in Quezon City, Philippines. They split their two previous encounters, both unanimous decisions and each managed to lose just once more heading into the rubber match -- Ken Norton beat Ali via split decision, and George Foreman knocked out Frazier. Ali would reclaim his heavyweight title by defeating Foreman in "The Rumble in the Jungle," thus setting the stage for one of the most anticipated boxing matches of all time.
For 42 grueling minutes, in 120-degree heat, the two warriors left their hearts in the ring, with Ali often employing his now familiar rope-a-dope strategy and Frazier coming in low to land his thunderous hooks to the body and head of the aging champion. The fight wore on at a frantic pace, with neither man significantly ahead on the judges' scorecards. In between rounds 14 and 15, Frazier's trainer Eddie Futch had deemed his fighter had enough and threw in the towel, ending the battle and awarding Ali the victory. The fight took its toll physically on both Ali and Frazier and neither were ever as great again as they were that morning in Manila.

Ali never said he is going to quit and will not coming for 15th round, his gloves were on and Angelo Dundee clearly said in an interview If he has to fight more 5 rounds after that 14th round he would getup and fight because he is Muhammad Ali..The greatest

Ali instructed his cornermen to cut his gloves off, but Dundee ignored him. Ali later told his biographer Thomas Hauser, "Frazier quit just before I did. I didn't think I could fight anymore."[
We are all human and beatable, Ali also was and that fact, doesn't makes him less great than he was.

“Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”

Ali WAS NOT going to quit on the 15th...look how fast he jumped off the stool to raise his hand in victory...he may have been dead tired but he lived off Will and Insanity.

It's not a myth at all. Ali himself said that he wasn't going to come out for the 15th round. However, though Joe was ready to go out for the last round, he couldn't see because of swelling around eyes. To my mind the Fight was a tie: and the real 'winner' was Eddie Fusch, Joe's trainer, who wouldn't let a blind fighter go back into the ring. Eddie Fusch had seen 3 boxers killed in the ring.

+D Nickaroo Ali has said many things. Not everything he says is true.

+Kammy A close friend of Ali's said this. It is a pity that Ali said this; if he had seen Joe come out for the 15th round who really knows what might have happened. Ali might have also come out into the ring. The referee should have stopped the fight at the end of the 14th round: Ali was landing punches at will, and the referee had to guide Joe back to his corner because he could not see. There would have been no controversy then

Ali said he wanted to quit in the henry cooper fight and the sonny liston fight yet he continued to fight. Ali said in a interview he's never going to fight doug jones again so you believe him? Yet after the post liston fight he called out doug jones.

According Eddie Futch, Angelo Dundee, Ferdie Percheco, George Foreman, Carlos Padilla, even Joe said it didn't happen at the time... It was never even mentioned until 1993, it was to sell a documentary about the fight which was airing. I'm not Ali's biggest fan but The Ring magazine confirmed that this story was a total myth in 2010.

Excellent comment. I totally agree. It irritates me also. Especially because people will actually believe this junk. Muhammad Ali would die before he quit. Ali was dominating the fight and would've either finished the job or Joe would've took some serious, long-term damage.

This myth that Ali would have given up before round 15 irritates me. He had just crushed Frazier in round 11-14 and Frazier would have been fataly injured if he had come out for round 15. Dundee would never had allowed Ali to quit at this point in the fight when Ali was doing so well. Its a myth started by Frazier in Ghosts from Manila where some ringside reporters saw Frazier ahead before round 15 - if you look at boxrec he was not. Ali was in front on all cards

Ali was ALWAYS gonna get up. Joe would have DIED if it went into 15 rounds. Ali was winning very easily and landing big bombs at will

I respect and love boxing, but the men in this video need to correct them self, these men were the greatest boxers of all time, a fight involves more than boxing, just look at Randy Couture Vs. James Tony, granted Tony is past his prime, but its an example of what happens when a Boxer fights a fighter. Ali, Frazier, Foreman, and Tyson are the GOAT in boxing but not fighting. Just remember you cant box off of you're back.

He crushed frazier 11-14 and was doing so well. Ali was rushed to the hospital after he collapsed and said that was the closes he was to death he had ever been. Pacheco stated in the doc that he was going to quit. How about asking Ali? Oh yeah. Also ask him why he gave speeches at KKK rallies and Y he stated in Playboy that a black woman should be shot dead if seen with a white man. If this guy is ur hero, I feel sorry for u.
