I love this album. I think Fade to Grey was what made me buy it to begin with. I noted the honesty in the chorus and that was it. Definitely not my first Jars album though. That was The Eleventh Hour....and that freaked ten year old me out. I was used to pop music. Jars was a far cry from that.

God bless you. I too was a parent listening to Jars of Clay raising my two daughters. I am listening to them at age 62, and tears come to my eyes of love and gladness and the moving memoires these songs stirred up in me.

I was born February 19 1997. My father played Jars Of Clay constantly while I grew up. My first email was "Jarsofclayiscool" aha in elementary. Ah~~~ This music has always been with me and I'm so grateful for it~

Carly Chislett I will be like your father when I become a father, haha. Jars of Clay have been my favorite band for almost 10 years now. They were the first Christian band I really got into and could connect with shortly after I became a Christian at age 17. That line from Love Song for a Savior, "Seems too easy to call you savior, not close enough to call you God" totally struck a chord with me because it was how I felt as a young Christian.

I've listened to songs from this album nearly every day for probably the past 10 years (and yes I bought the CD new). My "If I Left The Zoo" CD has been stuck in my car's CD player for at least 5 years lol.

What's blowing my mind at the moment is those goofy young men stumbling over their words actually created this incredible album. So thankful that they're still making incredible music after 20 years together.

Schenley Pilgram I too am thankful. They've always been such a unique and refreshing band right from the get go. They're a lot more of a thinking man/woman's group than a lot of what you see in the contemporary Christian market, and that's the main reason why they've been my favorite band practically since the beginning of my walk with Christ. Another great artist you need to check out who is definitely THE most underrated and overlooked artist in CCM history (and one of the most in music history in general) is Mark Heard. His lyrics are so deep and thought provoking, and his music (particularly on his last three albums) is phenomenal.

I visualized the songs being recorded in a studio. I was surprised to find they were recorded in a living room.

Much Afraid is a great album, not any worse than the first one - unlike most people like to say. If anything, it was surprising how they decided to go for something so different from their first experience, and yet do such a good job at it.
Even though my favorite album from Jars of Clay is the last one, Inland, which I find to be noticeably better than anything I've ever seen from them, I have to recognize their competence in those two albums.

Rodrigo Pinheiro das Graças Their first album was a very impressive, unique and successful debut, but they delved much deeper musically and lyrically with this album. I would argue that it's one of the best albums of the late 90's. "Tea and Sympathy", "Frail" and "Portrait of an Apology", just to pick out a few among all the good tracks, are such beautiful songs with such great acoustic guitar and string arrangements, and Dan's lyrics in all of those songs are so poignant. You compare this to the W's silly songs and DC Talk's more straightforward lyrics and you realize just how special this album was in the CCM market at that time, and you can see why the band got some mainstream attention. Yes, Inland is excellent. They keep growing and expanding themselves, and they work together as a group very well (one member doesn't try and take over), which is why they've been together for so long.
