    I have a 2014 Toyota tundra sr5 5.7
    The rattle on start up and timing chain clatter until warmed up.
    Changed the timing chain and tensioner.
    I started the same thing again.
    The fix.... I found out that the vvt silinoids were turpentined up.
    No codes. Use one can of sea foam and let idle for two hours.
    That fixed it like new.
    I could have saved 2800 in the first place. Idler tensioner look fine.
    But they only have 13.5lbs of pressure .
    So just that little bit of turpentined up parts was the only problem.
    Try the sea foam I really granted my teeth. But it worked... 1 oz per quart.

      1 oz per quart of oil or where to put it?.... Where to get sea foam?....

    Ganyan din 2016 tundra k kabayan. Pero pag uminit ayos naman. Morethan 1 year na ganyan.

      My 2015 is the same way. Only rattles for about 30 seconds on cold startup.

    My tundra 5.7 has been making that chain tensioner noise at cold start for over 5 years. I seem to remedy the problem with a oil flush every year and it comes back after a few months every time. 133k miles had since new. It sounds bad but i plan on trying to push the engine to 200k before deciding if i just put a new motor in it lol

      Have a video of the sounds yours makes? I'm curious

      These engines form a lot of sludge deposits. When you are flushing it, it's probably washing enough sludge out to improve oil supply to the tensioners and making the timing chain rattle go away. It's not a good idea to ignore it. A loose chain rattle can damage the chain guides and create fine metal flakes that end up in the oil and damage the bearings.

      @@AuggieTB no i actually dont have a video but its pretty much like this.

      Yes it is the turpentine build up on the vvt silinoids.
      Only 13.5 lbs of pressure on tensioner is not much so it gets a little buildup and sticks...
      Sea foam 50 to 100 miles before oil change is the fix.
      The chain he sees in this video is lose but if you spray and clean it and work just a little and do a little sea foam per year it will last for ever.
      And will save you 2800.
      These motor have to be clean...
      Clearances are real tight on parts

    Kabayan, pwede ga kaya iyan ng quick fix na oil foam ga un? Ganyan din sa sequoia ko. Same engine naman sila. Anyway ilang oras na tarbaho iyan sir?

    Why just replace the tensioner and not the chain as well. They are supposed to be changed out every 100k miles on all tundras.

      Timing chain is supposed to be good for the life of the engine.

      You’re confusing timing belts with timing chains…timing belts have manufacturer set replacement intervals, timing chains on these engines do not.

    • @JB.1234
      @JB.1234 7 місяців тому +2

      @brianneu6489 the timing chain tensioners go out on toyota models and need to be changed. Has nothing to do with the serpentine belt as the tundras have a timing chain not a timing belt.

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 4 місяці тому

      @@brianneu6489 Yeah, because Toyota is belligerently against servicing chains they know are a wear item. Timing chains stretch, that's why Toyota has a bunch of tensioners in there taking up slack. You get rattle when the tensioners are struggle to take up that slack. This is the same company that told customers that cold start timing chain rattle was normal and then down the road customers are buying a new engine because the rattle eventually gets so severe it starts rubbing on internal components or breaking chain guides, leading to engine damage.
