- ORIGINAL Star Wars Opening 4K | Project 4K77 v2.0 Preview
This sample is from the currently work in progress 2.0 release of Project 4K77. Project 4K77 is a fan preservation which scanned authentic theater used prints in 4K Resolution and was painstakingly restored frame by frame. This version has had no Digital Noise Reduction, no Edge Enhancement, or any Artificial Sharpening. The color grading in this preview is temporary.
The creators of Project 4K77/80/83 are fans who have not received a cent of profit for their work, but have delivered a quality restoration which challenges that even of the official Disney releases. Project 4K77 is made free to anyone who owns the official 2011 or 2019 Blu-Ray Releases of Star Wars.
I was there, opening day, in 1977. It was The Stanley Theater, in Vancouver. 70mm Dolby. We stood in line for 5 hours. It was a mind blowing experience. When the credits faded, the music twinkled, we dropped down to see the planet...then the ships took over the screen. I went in an innocent 8 year old boy. I left with a heart full of magic and dreams.
I went to the premier in 1977 at age 14 & went on to watch it an additional 13 times. My friends & I would sneak on the train at Suffolk Downs station in East Boston, go to the Sack Charles 123 theater in Boston, watch the film, stay in our seats, & watch it again. They never threw us out.
I saw it 31 times by sitting through it twice most times I saw it.
@teresadalton741i seen the primer at the lowes astor theater in midtown manhatten on may 25th 1977. We were on line for hrs. But it was such a experience! I first saw the trailer first at a star trek convention or famous monsters convention. In n.y.c. as well as the movie in theaters. Seen it 20 times that first year! Great memories!😊
Likely the greatest film intro of all time?
Hasn't been and will never be a better opening
This brings back memories, this really blew our minds in 1977.
I can imagine
changed the world
Oh, indeed how it does. Made summer of '77 one of my favorite summers ever--if not my absolute favorite.
It us in the top 4 movies ever made
Same. We were so, so lucky.
I'm 7 years old again with my dad - I'll never forget it! - We were all truly blessed to have experienced that as kids in the 70's when it was fresh ❤
...i was 29 on opening day, i became a kid again by the time movie ended... truly something special...
45 years later I still get goosebumps when I hear the Star Wars theme.
of all the star wars films this will always be the best
Weeeeeell , maybe not Solo.
episode 3 and 4 are the best, 5 and 6 are good too right behind those, chose to not watch 1 and 2 because of the hate they get so I figured they probably werent that good
@@nitroxylictv 1 and 2 are good in their own right.
@@nitroxylictv great name
SW and ESB are the best the prequels arent even in the same league as those 2. 3 is best out of the prequels but they are very mediocre
First, one has to appreciate that you weren't seeing this on your 70" flat-screen or even your home theater. No, you were sitting in a dark cinema, (no cell phones), popcorn in hand with 700 other people, with a great, big, glorious W-I-D-E-S-C-R-E-E-N projection in front of you. Plus, absolutely NOTHING like Star Wars had ever been seen before: The HUUUUGE ships, dazzling FX, characters, story, music, imagination, ALL of it a perfect storm of movie making. First, the opening "crawl", set to John William's rousing score, then we look down to see planets in front of us. Suddenly, the first ship zooms overhead, laser bolts flying back and forth. You knew they were running from something but . . . HOLY SMOKES!! The ginourmous star destroyer, its rumbling engines rattling your teeth, glides into view from somewhere behind you, so close you want to duck and look back over your shoulder. And then it just keeps on coming and there's just more, . . . and more . . . and MORE, almost as if there would be no end.
And in that moment, you and the 700 other people all KNEW the next two hours were going to be pure magic!
And they were. :oD
Oh yeah.
I was 5 and I distinctly remember my Dad reading the opening crawl to me, and then when the Star Destroyer was halfway overhead, him saying "whoa!".
I wish I could relive that moment again.
RIP Dad. I really miss you.
Has somebody who was born in 1998 and never saw the original on the big screen, I think this is the absolute perfect description of this opening shot.
Even when I first saw it via the 2004 DVD release back in 2011, I instinctively knew that when I first saw this scene, it looked utterly incredible. And I was 13 when I saw it for the first time.
Born in 78, a bit too late, but close enough to totally relate to that era.. Your comment had me tearing up. Total magic.
I actually did duck LOL
It was exactly like that! In my case not so many people though. I lived in a small, less than 10k people town, so we had a small theater and not a lot else to do in town as kids, so we all hung out there as much as possible. In those days, you could pay one price and watch every showing all day, so you might spend all afternoon and night there socializing, playing video games in the lobby and watching movies over and over. I remember the tickets being $3 each and you could get $20 from your mom and have more than enough for the movie, the games and snacks and still have some left over.
BIG movies, like Star Wars would often stay in the theater for WEEKS! I saw this original Star Wars in that theater 110 times! To this day, it still hasn't gotten old and I'm as big of a fan as I ever was. My only regret was not holding on to some of those original Star Wars toys I had.
Star Wars would take over a kids life then. I lived in a rural farming community, and I remember many times standing in a field on the edge of town, watching the sunset. In my mind, there were two suns setting, and I was like Luke watching it, with many adventures ahead of me. Playing with friends battling with makeshift light sabers we made from the wooden broom stick handles. I don't think our moms ever really figured out what kept happening to their broomsticks.
When the Star Wars arcade game finally made an appearance in the lobby there was a never ending line to get a chance to play it. It was all too short and dream come true to fly an xwing! Never could I have imagine that here in my late 50s I'd be able to do the things I can in the Star Wars universe today.
I can play in these worlds I grew up with, some in VR! I can hold a realistic looking and sounding light saber in my hand! I can play those games and watch those movies over and over again on a 110 inch projection screen with full surround sound! I could buy and wear the costumes and gear. I can literally go and visit a Star Wars planet, walk around and fly in the Millennium Falcon! I got to grow up with those heroes, and in some cases watch them eventually die.
You young Star Wars fans must truly appreciate the absolute treasure (despite the sometimes off rail Disney misgivings) in the Star Wars universe you have at your disposable today. And it all started, right here, in the opening scenes on this video!
If I could give any of you young people a good piece of advise it would be this.... NEVER. STOP. PLAYING! Sure, you have to adult sometimes, but never loose that inner child and never let the old man (woman) in!
That first shot is so iconic and drew us all in immediately cause it looked so vast and REAL! =)
45 years ago, in theaters across the world…
Two great movies in 1977, both with incredible opening sequences, Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. A great year for movies.
1974 - 1989, the best 15 years in film history. Summer blockbusters every year. So many iconic films.
Watching this will NEVER not make me happy.
My parents told me that they saw this at a drive-in when they were dating in 1977. I can't even imagine how cool of an experience that was.
Realistic, gritty and just mind blowing...Sci-fi in the late 70s/early 80s was just better. Traveller RPG forever.
OMG Traveller! What a fantastic game! Bought everything as soon as it came out.
🎯💯
John Williams understood the assignment
I was 11 and I went to the premiere show in Melbourne.
Everyone in the audence was dressed as Storm Troopers and a few Darth Vaders as well.
I almost peed my pants 🤣watching the opening scene the movie just blew my mind!
What a great day in my life ❤I will always remember it and how high I felt after leaving the theater.
Thanks George you rock 🤘
This looks great! Some grain and specks here and there, but I like that, as opposed to ultra smoothness. Grain is film, and it makes it look more real. Obviously not too grainy that it detracts from the movie (that's not this) but enough that it looks like film
I agree DNR is worst thing you can do to movie and its make whole 1080p-4k pointless because it turns movie to blurry mess in which characters looks like wax figures.
Yeah the last thing you want is red streaks appearing on the film like here... 😂
I’m not too fussed about whether the picture is 35mm, VHS or whatever quality, what I most want is for the footage to be what is was pre-special editions!
Agreed, this looks like a good print. I found the Silver Screen Edition so soft and grainy as to be distracting.
This main source for this project actually comes from a British I.B. Technicolor print. Due to the ways these prints were produced, they were actually much higher in quality than a standard Eastman-Kodak LPP print.
The colour is spot on, particularly capturing the blue/grey chambray of the AC security men's shirts. It also looks wider compared to the blu ray aspect ratio
This is great! So nice to also hear the original score.
Exceptionally well done! It brings back happy memories of going to the theater to see this several times when it was first released.
Notice the episode title “A New Hope”isn’t there. It wasn’t added until later. This really brings back memories! 😊
i remember like yesterday, in the cinema to the premiere in my country, 7 year old kid watching this awesomeness opening scene with that ship being followed by the big starship
Original is always the best. It’s how I remember it as a kid in ‘77
That breather mask and the sinister sound it made, as we came to find out, was the life preserver of a battered old man clinging onto dear life. 😆
❤THAT OPENING NEVER GETS OLD 4 ME & IVE SEEN IT EASILY OVER 50× 😮😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊!!
Looks gorgeous!
This movie blew me away to another realm when I saw it as a kid.
When this was first shown in theaters, some people in the audience ducked. The effect of seeing this on the big screen, with the sound of the rumbling engines making you shake in your seat, can not be understated. The Star destroyer feels huge. It makes you want to duck as it flies over.
I just realized that the Star Wars logo just disappeared as it was going away
Itwasthe best opening I ever saw. Nothing like it before or since. Thank you 4k restoration team❤❤❤
star wars will never be episode 4. This is Star Wars.
Extraordinary work - I loved 4K77 and stoked to see a v2.0 Something about it pushed buttons that the more modern, "messed with" versions couldn't reach. You have my thanks for that.
I was 12 in 77, the queue out of every theater, in my hometown Rome (Italy), were turning around the entire block were the theathers was set, and last for two monts everyday not only the weekends!!! People have never enough to see the movie again and again!!! Just wow!!!
Everyone always talks about how good it looks...but how about how good it sounds?
Everyone always talks about how good the sound was?
Saw this opening weekend at Graumans Chinese Theater. My Aunt took me as I "had to see this"- I have no idea how she knew it would be what it became but I treasure that memory. Before any Ep I or II or III, etc.
What struck most from this scene as a 10yo is that that rebels wouldn't back down even after being captured and Leia is spicy to the end.
I was 11 years old in the summer of 1977 when Star Wars premiered. I saw it with my family at The Lyric Theater in Ludington Michigan. I don't think there has ever been another film that has had the kind of audience impact that Star Wars did in 1977. My family (and all of my friends) probably saw the film a dozen times during that summer since the Lyric was a grand old single screen theater. Star Wars played for weeks in Ludington until finally being replaced by Smokey and the Bandit. Han shot first....always.
Fantastic to watch.
However..
You haven't seen STAR WARS until you have seen it in the original super8. 400 feet spool 16mins.
Colour sound.
Agreed. I watched both film reels on my projector and it was a real blast. Those two reels must have sold like crazy considering the fact they were the only way to see the movie at home at the time.
I own David Prowse's (Darth Vadar) copy of the original 8mm film box.
@@sleekflash16 Yes. The only way to see it at home at that time. Amazing. We had to wait until 1982 to get it on VHS. To buy a copy then cost £50. That is about £200 today.
But I suppose in comparison for £29 for 16 minutes on Super 8 that was not a bad deal.
One of the great opening scenes of all time. When Vader stepped into the scene the hair on the back of my neck stood up.
Fantastic work. You’ve really made it shine like new.
Looks fantastic!!!
Wow I remember watching this on VHS as a kid, re watching that intro took me right back. Looks amazing 😍
Thanks for that! I was lucky enough to see the re-release of SW back in 97, in the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, when I was attending the Musicians Institute in L.A.
The crowd went beserk when Darth Vader came in, exploding in applause and screams, it sounded like Brazil had just scored a goal in a World Cup Final (believe me, it's something to behold, I'm brazilian). Never seen anything like it, such a crowd reaction, in a movie theater!
¡Thank you so much! You people are defending the long lost value of authenticity against the blind pursuit of profit at any cost that the movies industry has fallen in. Those of us who saw the original versions of the SW first trilogy have memories that are very valuable (not in a monetary sense), and irreplaceable, and we would like to preserve them. You people are giving us the possibility to achieve this
I remember watching a film called Beautiful Girls on VHS back in the 90s. There was a young child actress in it named Natalie Portman and I remember thinking at the time wow this kid can really act! She's very talented. Who is she? Little did I know she'd end up being Luke and Leia's mother in the future. I'm a HUGE Star Wars fanatic and I never would've guessed that at the time.
Bravo! I'm another guy who saw this when it first came out. I was a seasoned 25 at the time. It's good to see the original.
The opening crawl is quite interesting. These days it can be done digitally fairly simply in After Effects and other software but even with digital crawls, the same decisions are having to be made that were made back then, namely in the positioning of words and letters.
If you look at the crawl, the spacing between words isn't uniform throughout and even individual words have different spacing. With digital crawls, you can highlight paragraphs, lines or words and alter their spacing to make those changes but the original crawl was done for real, with ILM having to manually position each individual letter to create paragraphs that looked densely packed without being too bunched up or having large gaps. That's a lot of tedious work that needed to be done even before the camera was rolling to record it.
There were also multiple versions of the crawl and the early versions were far bigger. That's a lot of work. It's also interesting to note that as soon as the last line appears, the crawl suddenly speeds up. By the time of the prequels, when John Knoll was doing it digitally, he could have that speed up happen more gradually so it felt like the crawl was moving at a more uniform pace into the distance.
Someone posted something on Instagram showing his son the original VHS cut and they got to the part where the star destroyer flies over tattooine and the dad goes "this looks so awful compared to how I remember" and the kid goes "maybe there's something wrong with the tape" and he goes "nah this is how it looked bud"
So I had to come here and watch it myself again for the first time since I was a little kid in the early 2000s.
They're wrong. This looks BETTER! George Lucas put real crafted miniatures in front of blue screen for the ships, and they benefit from it. They don't look off like most CGI does. They look solid, like you could touch them... because you COULD touch them. And that adds so much more to the immersion than CGI does imo.
You have earned my like and subscription sir 🙌
映画館で観たのは二十歳の時でした!当時の映像化技術を屈指した、技術屋ルーカスの力作👍 当時はスピルバーグの[未知との遭遇]と比較されてたなー!
Since the original film was titled "Star Wars" with no Episode IV A New Hope, I'd love to change the opening of Empire and Jedi - just using their logo titles with no Star Wars title or Episode numbers.
Really the only scene in all of Star Wars where storm troopers are able to shoot straight. For the first 30 seconds or so, anyway.
Spectacular job
I'm 56 I saw it when I was 11. I was trying to explain to my grandchildren exactly why Star Wars changed everything. I explained that before that every science fiction film was joyless and dystopian. the future was where we'd be cannibals or controlled by something or other. it was bleak and no fun. Then Star Wars came out and suddenly there was a great adventure in a galaxy far far away set a long time ago like a fairy tale. Luke Skywalker was so identifiable as the child we all were because he was young, exploring life from a place where he wasn't a hero to begin with, but became a great hero. Luke was me as a child, so full of hope. Then to see the giant ship chasing the blockade runner, utterly wow in the first minute. it was masterful.
then of course there were the Star Wars toys.no other film had ever done the range that Star Wars did, i begged my mother to buy me a breakfast serial because it had a stormtrooper you could cut out from the cardboard container.
so how does Disney today get that back? I have no idea. I just know that its flashy, its kind of lame . its kind of insulting to the original fans for lots of reasons. Maybe they cant get it back because todays kids are saturated with the fun adventure sci fi that star wars started. But at least done insult the original film with woke.
This, combined with DrDre's LUT will be my go to way of watching Star Wars.
RIP Star Wars.
Beautiful
I remember this at 3 years old .
Great clip would love to have the whole P 4K77 v2.0 film : ) Also liked the R15:13 bit at the end ; )
Looks and sounds really great, congrats on your work it’s a passion for sure🎬🔥
Good job
Rebels running away from Stormtroopers and the Stormtroopers keep firing them 4:52
No wonder that Sprocket Systems division was renamed "Skywalker Sound" 10 years after this movie was released, this franchise was getting popular!
Looks much better than my old worn out VHS box set of the theatrical versions.
I didn't get it how C3PO and R2D2 survived the crossfire between rebels and stormtroopers 👽
It’s called a script
It's an intended joke, a sight gag that used to get a big laugh in theaters. It's a break from seeing the slaughter of all the soldiers and shows us that these aren't "normal" droids. They're on a mission from God- er, I mean, TheForce
It was intentional comedy relief to break the tension and violence of the Imperial boarding and ensuing slaughter. Audiences reacted perfectly to this relief with huge laughter and thunderous applause, endearing the droids to them instantly. When Vader steps through the doorway into the Blockade Runner, the audience hissed - recalling audience reaction to villains in previous decades, which audience members young and old in 1977 were well aware of as a trope. STAR WARS was magic, because it had invoked audiences into old-fashioned interplay with the characters and action on-screen. It was a special moment in time.
it stayed at the old Cine Capri in Phoenix for well over a year.....a single-screen theater in the grand tradition........
I am surprised Disney hasn't shut projects like this down for copyright violations...
Good point
So easy to see why this blew everyone away back then, still has that same effect now. Here's one for you though, I sadly never saw the original Star Wars back then in 1977 or Close Encounters of The Third Kind when I was 7. I may never know why. It was the year of our mum and dad's divorce, so all money maybe went on that and i missed out. Tough really, but there you go. At least I was able to see The Empire Strikes Back a few years later. Even more amazing.
Awesome job. When I watch R2 and threepio cross the corridor I can't help but remember that even as a very young child I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. There's no way they'd have done that. But still, didn't stop me loving the film then and now.
In a rough cut following their corridor cross there was a shot of Threepio, tangled in wires, saying “Help, I’m melting! This is all your fault!” We all know that shot because it was moved to later in the film (on the Falcon) after the TIE fighter battle. Should’ve stayed where it originally was.
Very nice
MEMORABLE. ITS THE FILM FROM MY CHILDHOOD.
It's a fantastic admirable effort that are put into this. I know about putting 1000s of hours into somehting you are dedicated to.
Nothing beats fan made dedication work.
I am puzzled though how my eye can spot two gigantic cuts in two frames at 3:22 that wasn't fixed in the v1.0 !??
Looks good.
I've seen both 4k77 and 4k83, both great versions to watch, for just fan made versions. For me, these are the best versions to watch the original Unaltered Versions. But I have always had a soft spot for the 2006 Limited Edition DVD Release of it, because, while the transfer comes from a Laserdisc, I still like the grain from the Laserdisc and the poor quality, it (to me) makes a fun watch for each of those films, for those versions, it actually makes me feel like I was at the movies watching those movies.
We need a true wide-screen version of the originals on 4k. 2006 Limited edition is a letterbox. It simply can't be the best it can be.
Where are these available?
Still amazing to this day, Disney will never compare.
Happy 47th Birthday Star Wars!
Ah that newly minted Dolby Stereo Sound.....nothing prepared you for the experience in 1977, the opening scene itself was worth waiting in line for. And thank George Lucas for bringing back the original Fox Fanfare.
I saw it in the theatre in 1977 as well as the next two. They should restore the movies from the original 70mm prints (if still in existence) and release it on 4k. They could have a disc with the original version and one with the updated version. I like some of the new scenes, so good to have both versions.
Looks pretty good. Still needs a serious round of "dust busting" though. There's a lot of visible specs, both from the negative and the print (and who knows how many generations of internegs and interpositives were in-between the negative cut and this print). What restoration and color timing software are you guys using?
Great job people 😀
I was 11 years old and most likely went to see it with my friend Neil, but I can’t remember the first time. But I do remember one of the 25 times I saw it in the cinema, it played for a year in one cinema in Montreal, the scene where Luke is looking at the twin suns of Tatooine the film burnt. It was ironic to be sure. Lol
I remember that Star Wars was still playing in some first-run cinemas, more than a YEAR after it was released. It might have only shown on Fridays and Saturdays, and maybe an afternoon matinee, or late night or even as a midnight show, and certainly in one of the smaller theaters, but still, in a FIRST-RUN theater? And more than a YEAR after its premiere? Has ANY film released since then done this?
Excellent! I have one of the first VHS tapes, but it is still after "Episode IV A New Hope" was added, and I also have the first edition laserdisc before the addition, but no laserdisc player. 😞
I'm bookmarking your site as a reminder to make a donation after my bank account recovers from Christmas.
Much appreciated! But remember, that’s not my site, I’m only a messenger. The real work goes on behind the scenes on the forums by other, much more talented individuals. You can download the projects from there!
In 2024, this is still epic and amazing. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Awesome. Exactly what I saw back in early summer 1977. Star Wars... not a new hope. I have the dvd before the film's bad facelift with dumb new name and much prefer the original version. So if you're restoring it again I will gladly watch any time over the 1997 changes. Let's have wolfman back in the cantina!
My FAVORITE segment will ALWAYS be when Darth Vader (my FAVORITE character) makes his initial appearance.
The original STAR WARS is a masterpiece that ranks second only to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made.
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why the shot at 3:14 is windowed in like that?
Are you looking to restore the original print of the whole film as seen in 1977?
I miss the original opening, "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away... a great adventure took place." The second part gets cut out of most reproductions.
Rebel Blockade Runner 2:56
Looks really nice so far. I noticed a change of ratio around 3:13 . Is that to be changed when 2.0 is completed?
I’m not too sure since I am not personally working on the project. This aspect ratio change is likely because of a source change so since it’s not present in the original print, it will likely be adjusted for in the final release.
Thank you for NOT adding "Episode 4 A New Hope" to the original crawler.
It seems like these Stormtroopers are the only ones that could hit their target. But, I have always wondered how C-3PO and R2-D2 managed to cross the corridor (5:00) without getting hit from all the blasters.
Where can I get 4K77?? I see this everywhere, but there's no evidence it actually exists lol. I've been hearing about it for a few years now. So is this a thing? Or is it not finished yet? Just curious. I hate when people that don't understand O.G. Star Wars, and call it "A New Hope". Yes, that was the SECOND title when released, but I want to correct everyone on UA-cam that calls it ANH. The first one is just called Star Wars. It will always be to me.
I believe version 1.4 DNR and 1.0 No DNR have been posted on the Internet Archive. However, if you would like to download it the officially endorsed way, you can register an account on TheStarWarsTrilogy.com forums. You should be able to find what you need from there.
Flashback to my childhood nothing to do to the garbage that disney brings, really good job!
does anyone know the name of the extra, who gets killed, is at 4:16
Looks amazing, I could never figure out why the storm troopers or in fact anyone wore armour as its useless against any type of attack, even the helmets can't defend from a stick or a rock.
I know right.
Oh no! You found a plot hole!
the helmets protect against smoke and debris, thats about it lol
It's to make it easy for the audience to know who the bad guys are.
It actually doe protect them, it’s made by a plastic that disperses the energy throughout the whole armor. So it just knocks them out but saves then from death.
“On the eve of Star Wars release, 20th Century Fox , George Lucas, and the cast and crew braced themselves for the worst. One way or another, May 25th, 1977, would be a day they’d never forget…”
1:08
Disney killed it!
Star Wars!
