How Fans Saved Star Wars - The Classic Editions (Part II)
Переглядів 22 тис.Місяць тому
Despite George Lucas' objections, fans have been obsessively trying to preserve the original cuts of Star Wars that he detests so much. What began as simple Laserdisc bootlegging soon evolved into something much more. While fans were scrambling to eek out as much picture quality as they could from Laserdiscs, one man had a vision. The story of Garrett Gilchrist and the Classic Editions is an of...

We the fans cannot let that happen. This is the story of how the fans saved Star Wars. This video is by no means meant to endorse Russia, nor the aggressive acts of the Russian Federation. This is simply a preservation of significant historical media. Scanned in 4K SDR on a LaserGraphics Scanstation, this print was bought from eBay from a Ukranian seller. The feature is played back at approx. 18 fps. Audio is from the semi-official 2004 DVD release of episodes 1-18 of Ну Погоди! ...
Stranger in a Strange Land - A very short 8mm film

Stranger in a Strange Land - An 8mm Shortfilm Over the summer of 2023, I had the privilege of serving in Slovakia for a second time on a mission trip. Before I left, I found an old Kodak "Brownie" 8mm camera at an antique store for $20, so I figured this would be a good way to test it. These are some selected scenes from the film I shot, rearranged in a more cohesive order. This was my first ti...

I saw Star Wars when it first came out in 1977, my dad took me. TBH I did not think it was that great (I guess I was in a bad mood that day). A few years later in college (around 1981) they had a showing in the big auditorium and a friend had to convince me to go, since I had a vague memory if not liking it that much. When I saw it the 2nd time, I was like WOW, WHAT WAS I THINKING THE FIRST TIME I SAW THIS?! And even more, there was a guy sitting in front of us, just him alone, and during the light saber battle between Luke and Vader, he turns around to us and says "THIS IS SO COOL!" with wide eyes and big smile, even though he didn't know us or anything. I remember his expression of excitement to this day. Needless to say I really loved the movie and saw all of the others that came out after.
It saddens my heart to see original works being re-imagined, and ordering the ORIGINALS DESTROYED. As if the Original release was NOT A PART OF HISTORY. It has been erased, in the hope of acceptance of a newer, better, "Director's Cut" is definitive! Sad, truly sad! Thank you for offering a glimpse into the past for future generations, as they accept change and a fresh name over preserving history!
As a child I loved that scene so much but also have always thought about the lightning hitting the teeth...
watching this makes me dislike the special editions even more
go to hell using star wars to spread your christian propaganda.
It was early 1978 in Gosport UK (next door to Portsmouth) at the Ritz cinema and i was 6 years old! With my sister and mom and dad and their friends Jackie and Dave with their children Peter and Sarah, Dads friends had already seen the film in the US the year before coz like my dad Dave was in the Royal Navy and had spent 2 years living in the US. I remember seeing the famous Death Star poster in Peters bedroom. It was cold and dark and there was a big queue that led all the way round the cinema, we were close to the front of the queue and Jackie and Dave bought me and my sister American candy! It was fake chewing tobacco in a tin! 4 skinhead lads about 18 tried to push into the queue but my dad and Dave dragged them out and sent them to the back (hero's!)... there were so many people let into the cinema that some ended up sitting on the stairs between the seats. Can't remember the short film that was shown first, maybe something to do with skiing? (the good old days), then out come the ice-cream ladies and they sold out pretty quick... everyone sat down and BOOM when the opening titles came on there was massive cheer! The rest was amazing and when we got home i did my usual trying to make what i saw and could remember out of plasticine! No. 1 in my top 3 best films ever (Bladerunner is No.2).
Special Edition is way better
There must have been thousands of 35mm prints of the original cuts distributed to movie theaters across the world. Whatever became of those? I bet there are at least a few of them lying around forgotten somewhere. If one of those could be found and scanned that would be the gold mine.
I’ve seen those models in person and the craziest part is that the Blockade Runner is WAY bigger than the Star Destroyer. It’s amazing how they made the Star Destroyer look so huge with just camera angles.
I was 7 in 1977. This is what i saw. My mouth dropped. Im 55 now. I still feel the same way when i see this. Must've saw it 50 times in the theatre in 77 and 78. ❤️ I'd trade everything i have to go back. . .
Fantastic--and none of that "A New Hope" junk.
Disney really needs to do a 4K restored release of the theatrical cut. That would fix a fair amount of the money problems they have with Star Wars.
I want you to imagine a ten year old sitting in a dark living room, hands on his mouth, eyes wide with shock as he thinks the hero is about to die. He glances over to his dad next to him, who is eating popcorn with a smarmy smirk on his face because he knows what's about to happen. And then, the villain, the personification of evil itself hidden behind a death's head mask, turns, grabs the ruler of the galaxy and the head of the evil Empire that has tortured and pursued our band of heroic rebels, the dire music turns to a heroic swell, and the villain saves the galaxy. From that moment on, my conception of what a movie could be and how to tell a story changed forever and I became a lifelong fan of Star Wars to this day. What George and Disney have done to this franchise makes me weep in despair.
That opening. Whenever I hear 20th century fox I think of the opening bars of this theme ❤
Well, what happens next?
I'm quite young and grew up with the special editions. I always assumed that the opening shot was edited later on to look better for the special edition. I didn't know that it just looked that good from the beginning in 1977.
That was only the opening scene. Play back the entire message. The one inside your rusty innards.
Wooooooow
The first time I saw this movie, I was in awe. Now, as an adult, the magic is somehow stronger than I remember.
The cool thing everyone loved was he brought back the original Cinemascope theme
I feel old now... It reminds me of how "wild west" the internet was, back in the days...
Can you do a 16mm Film Preservation of Five Weeks in a Balloon?
No one had seen effects like that before. It was so thrilling at the time. I was five years old and was never the same again. It completely transformed me.
So the only difference was it didn’t say “A New Hope” 🤣🤣🤣
You can not be doing this
I was 15 when I first saw Star Wars on August 17, 1979. I remember the date because Elvis Presley died the day before. There were still lines for the movie, we stood outside the theater for around 40 minutes to get tickets, it was 100° degrees that day.
Yes ,That opening scene was oneof Best Knockouts of the 1970s, ; (Whole theatre Cheered , upon seeing the Imperial Criuser from Below ) ,and , There were some Real Knockouts in the. 1970s !
Great memories of the summer of 77 seeing Star Wars for the first time at the Meadowlark theatre in Edmonton. After seeing it once went at least 5 more times over the summer to watch it again. I miss the days of the stand alone theatre’s like the Meadowlark which were replaced by the giant multiscreen complexes.
I have told the kids time and time again, 'Star Wars' originally was a one off, it wasn't until years later they added the 'episode IV' bit.
Interesting video. Minor nitpicks: - flipping LDs was a solved problem by the early to mid 90s since most players could "auto flip" by that point. - burning dual layer DVDs in the early days was reliable in my experience. I have never heard that it was "error prone" or in any way an esoteric process akin to alchemy. - claiming laserdisc has "marginally better" quality than VHS is... suspect at best. It might as well be night and day when you're comparing high budget productions to each other (apples to apples).
Saw it at the drive in when it came out when I was at 16. In awe of the special effects at the time yet I’ve never seen any of the sequels.
I still have the original trilogy on Laserdisc in original english, unfortunately the PAL resolution really didnt age well, but it has a Dolby AC-3 soundtrack- I also signed the online petition to release the original trilogy alongside the reworked versions.
I still have original video of movie when it first came out on video. Still in good nick and watchable
wow ... thank you for this precious one !!! I 'm 56 yrs old
I have the special edition DVDs 2006 that have a bonus disk of the original unaltered movies. I believe there were 4 such sets at different times pre Disney that had unaltered versions with slightly different end credits and colors.
I saw it on opening day in Fresno CA. I had to sit in the first row.
This franchise is now dead to me. ...and I saw the original in theaters in 1977 ten times.
Summer of 77, I was 15. We saw this at a drive-in theater near Minneapolis, MN. I found great significance in "The Force". It was my first spiritual experience.
I just wish I could travel back in time and see it for the first time again.
'a new hope' is not in the scroll
I knew some of the story beforehand because the Marvel comic book Star Wars was released a few weeks before. I instantly loved Darth Vader. I have gotten into many debates over the years that "A New Hope" was added later, it was not in the original opening, I have been vindicated thanks to you fine people.
A Kinks melody is running through my head: "We are the Tatooine Preservation Society..."
Awesome. I was a movie and tv film editor in 1967 at a television station in Shreveport, LA. We received all our movies to show late night and weekday afternoons on 16mm film. The station only ordered black and white prints because if a color movie was ordered on 16mm film it was very expensive. And of course whether the movie was in widescreen or not, all 16mm films were 4:3 (pan and scan if necessary). I often thought I wish just once I could a wide screen (CinemaScope) color major motion picture film in 16mm. Just now, after all these years I got my wish. Thanks! And yes, that 20th Century Fox Films fanfare was written for the studio to put on every one of their motion pictures filmed in their new widescreen process, CinemaScope. The difference of course, is when the Fox search lights dissolve to A LUCASFILM Production, that's here we would see TWENTIETH CENTURY-FOX PRESENTS A CinemaScope PRODUCTION. ua-cam.com/video/vK-ImNKbXTs/v-deo.htmlsi=rAcC9MfWq4VXlc7n
Even at this resolution and at that sound quality: pure magic.
Didn't the mono mix only make it's debut in 1978? Also I'm pretty sure that's a 5.1 sound setup in the schematic for the 6 channel stereo.
visiting my cousins in 1977 in El Paso. We walked over to the mall and Star Wars was playing at Theatre. Until then at 16 years old nothing quite impressed me as much as Star Wars
This preservation could have edited out the visual noise digitally. I suspect that rather than do that the effects were put in as they don't look like naturally occurring film defects. I was a film student, this was sloppy work.
I posted a 16 minute documentary made by the creator of these preservations which hopefully can vouch for their authenticity.
Star Wars is much more than a saga//it presents real technologies like empire Moon-war planet and Millenium Falcon. Also the galactic wars are based on real history of wars between alien factions for control over planet Earth. We all are part of this history because the World Wars 1 and 2 were including aliens also fighting on both sides of the wars. The bombing of Nagasaki 1945 damaged an alien space ship for real
I saw this before it went into wide release. Shown in a old fashioned large theater. Amazing.
