Seymour Duncan Invader: Sound Samples

  • My video containing my opinions on the Seymour Duncan Invader humbucker has racked up a lot of views recently, so I thought I'd record some basic sound samples for you guys to get an idea of how it sounds.
It is installed in a Squier Bullet Special, with basswood body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. The guitar itself has a quite bassy quality and lacks the crispness you get with better woods.
The SD Invader does well in providing full on saturation and sustain. The pinches really scream, but rolled back it does some nice vintage crunch too.
It would no doubt be more expressive and sparkling in a better guitar.
Playing through a Bugera 333 infinum with EL34 valves, Marshall cab w/ Celestion Hot100 12" speaker, and picked up by a Shure SM57

I'd say the Invader is extremely versatile. Setting your amp to a good 'metal' setting, all you need is the guitar volume control to back off the sound to a rhythm crunch, and even ballsy breakup style sounds, so you have a whole spectrum of sounds without having to touch any foot switches or pedals.
Great for your punk simplicity and raw aggression.

It is a rare pickup that never looses its edge as times change but the Invader might be an exception. I finally broke down and ordered a set today in part because people are still talking about these 30 years after their release a long time ago. It may be that the music of this era is making a comeback as well but the Invader might just outlive us all.

I've got a set of d activators in my Ibanez Xiphos, they have a completely different sound to the SD Invaders.
They are cutting and precise, great for adding clarity to solos and lead work, but they lack the same growl and nastiness that the Invaders have.
I think the D Activators would get you closer to the thrash sound than the Invaders would, although having them in V style guitars which have a quite clinical sound anyway might lack character.
Both are good, but for different reasons.

I had one in the bridge of a bright partscaster. Worked very well for hetfieldy sounds. Not so good in warm guitars. Very good if there is only one guitar, or if the other guitarist has something very bright and tight like a dimebucker, but does not play well in the mix with less extreme guitars. Really awkward if there are synths or violins going on.

It's about time guitar nerds learned that the material of the body makes no difference to tone.

Do you have your tone knob turned down? Why is it so dark sounding?

    • @Sifuben
      @Sifuben 8 років тому

+JgHaverty stock they're pretty bassy. I find the tone a bit flabby. I've corrected this by changing the poles for ferrous steel hex slugs, tightens it up a lot and costs pence. I still find the sound a bit "harsh ceramic" so I'm going to experiment with replacing the main magnet with alnico 8.

if you need them to have a higher output, seymour duncan and EMG both have pickup boosters for guitars. and you can build your own.

your opinion and sense of sound are good, but id save the extra money and buy the invader, which is still a great sounding (passive) pickup and disperse that saved money elsewhere in my rig!

I have to say that, like you, I much prefer Seymour Duncan humbuckers (of all sorts) to EMG active pickups any day of the week. They just seem to have way more low-end and no batteries to deal with. I don't think I could ever be sold on active pickups simply because they are a pain in the ass -- unless the sound was far superior, which it is not in my opinion.

cant decide between the invader and the distortion.
Ive only heard them in youtube vids in HD but to me it seems like they are almost identical except that the invader seems to have MUCH more bottom end and I am concerned that it could be muddy.
Can anyone who has real experience with the invader, distortion or both please tell me if the bottom end on the invader can be hard to tame and indeed if the invader is worth the extra money over the distortion and why ?
For bridge pickups i currently use a Seymour JB, EMH-HZ, EMG-JH. The JB is by far my favourite. I play metal / rock from Queen to Sabbath to Maiden to Megadeth to Children of Bodom.
    What think thee ?

      If not sh-8.

Pretty much all Duncans are muddy as hell, if you like the tone of those pickups, try a Dimarzio Super Distortion, it's way better.

Its a shame music shops dont have some cheap as shit guitars with popular pickups installed in them for people to try. If it aint in a strat or a gibson then I cant try it at a local music store.
