Paul Newman - Cool Hand Luke - Plastic Jesus

- I decided to put up this clip from Cool Hand Luke. In the movie, he's singing the song "Plastic Jesus" after his mother passes away and I thought it was poetic for him as well. This is probably one of the moments where you realize how good of an actor he really was. Hopefully this doesn't cause any copyright issues. I don't know much about those rules.
Lyrics are as follows.
I don't care if it rains or freezes
Long as I've got my plastic Jesus
Sitting on the dashboard of my car
Comes in colors pink and pleasant
Glows in the dark cause it's iridescent
Take it with you ... when you travel far.
Get yourself a sweet Madonna
Dressed in rhinestones sitting on a
Pedestal of abalone shell
Going ninety I ain't scary
Cause I've got the Virgin Mary
Assuring me that I won't go to hell.
(repeat 1 time)
If you don't like this scene, it's a night in the box.
lmao
Lol! If they don't like your comment, it's a night in the boxxxx
Very nice thanks for the video
Brother
❤
He left us one of the most poignant scenes in movie history. Plays as well now as it did over fifty years ago.
This is probably the most in-depth emotional scene Hollywood ever produced - it's a masterpiece by Paul Newman. -RIP
31 years old, every time I think of this song it makes me think of my watch the that old wooden television with my dad. Means a lot to me, still my favorite movie
Adding a thumbs up here, boss
LJacksonCHL Yeah, add a thumbs up there.

It's hard to sing when you're crying, so his acting skills were put to the test in this scene. Plus it moved me because it was Luke's attempt to pray for his mother when he didn't know how to pray. In reality, God would accept that because it was from his heart. So for those reading this who don't know how to pray, anything sincere will be accepted. God is listening.
Adding a thumbs up ok.
Man boss was too good to him😥
I saw this movie at the drive-inn as a boy during the 60's and thought that guy is so cool. Paul Newman became the actor I built my teenage personality around. The Newman swagger worker for me in high school. As a boy I cried when he died in this movie, and I cried as a man when he died. He will always be a legend of the silver screen.
One of the best films of all time, only a few people would appreciate this film in todays world, but I think the 20 to 30 age group should all watch this film.
Happy to say I'm 17 :) And this is basically my favourite scene of the movie, though there are many good ones :)
I'm 15 and this is one of my favorite movies :)
Cool Hand Luke was just added to Netflix so alot more young people will be exposed to it.
I agree. Seen it over 30x. Watch it whenever it's on. There is a science behind the movie. You have to delve into it further to understand the message.
I was 16 when I read the book, by Donn Pearce who also wrote the screenplay and actually served time in a Florida correctional facility on a chain gang. Didn't see the movie until later. Pearce also did freelance magazine articles, most notably, for me, an Esquire magazine pictorial showing how it is possible to remove your pants while wearing leg shackles connected by a chain (Dragline and Luke). Pearce will turn 91 next month and I think his autobio would probably be as interesting, if not more so, than his Cool Hand Luke novel. I hope he writes one. I think he is the original Cool Hand Luke.
Powerful, Paul Newman is a man who can't be replaced. So many actors try to pull it off but no one can.
Among my top 5 movies. It made me cry. Thank you. I am now an old man, but I recall my mother saying "I will never leave your father, unless Paul Newman knocks on the door." I now understand.
Waal, he might just be looking for directions.
hands down, my favorite movie ever.
Paul Newman, class act.
RIP.
This scene is too powerful. Newman is a legend.
God what an actor this man was … they come along once in many lifetimes of this rarity and talent. He made it look effortless and that’s why he was so good. RIP Paul you were one of the greatest to have graced the silver screen… I’m sure many people agree with this statement!
I have been trying to learn the ukelele for ages, then I saw this song and Luke's style of banjo playing. Now it is my fist song learned, first of many now I have the confidence. Just ordered a Banjolele so I can sound like Luke. An extremly hansom man devoid of any arrogance...RIP Paul a great actor and fine man.
The perfect man to play the perfect role.
RIP Paul Newman....

Clearly, Luke don't know any religious songs, so this is the closest he gets...and perhaps it also has some connection to his mother, as well.
Clearly, Luke knows and understands the extent of religion
I like to imagine it may be something she sang to him when he was younger, or maybe a song they heard on a radio one time and it's a memory he can recall as being fond of her and a time when things were good.
It's powerful stuff, I'm so glad my dad showed me this movie and I know this song will be something to me when I have to experience what Luke is in this scene.
Rip Paul
@@thevelbaetum4118 funny this song was only a few years old when this movie came out, and hadnt come out yet when the movie is set, on top of that Paul Newman didn't know how to play the banjo and learned in less than a week just for this scene, it's the real reason why he stumbles through it, then speeds up at the end and fumbles some of the tabs.
I saw this national treasure at a car race in St Louis 25 years ago in person. Married to the same woman for 50 years.Rest in Peace, my good friend.
Best moment in movie history.
Paul is one of the greatest Actors of all time.... and one heck of a Human being. The world was truly a better place with him in it... R.I.P Paul you may be gone but your legacy lives on

I first saw this movie when I was about 11 or 12 and I absolutely loved it. It has always been one of my favorites. They just cannot make movies like this anymore, and they sure don`t have actors like this anymore. Awesome movie and an awesome man. R.I.P. Mr. Newman. You will never be forgotten..

One of the best actors of all time and a truly humble man. He used to refer to himself as "Ol skinny legs". Don't know why he didn't have a whole pacel of academy awards, probably jealousy.
Love the lighting and camerawork! Powerful
I'm in tears😔
Great movie...During the days of Double features for $2.00 admissions on Saturday afternoons this was the first movie before the Feature Movie, Bonnie and Clyde... What an afternoon of movie watching, 50 years ago....Wow, seems like yesterday! Cool Hand Luke the better movie!

Awesome! It gave me goosebumps!
GOD BLESS YOU SIR..🙏
I'm watching this movie right now for the first time!
Love love love it! "Cool Hand Luke" is one of my all time favorite movies. Watching it gave me the same feeling that reading "Catcher In the Rye" did . . . that there were others misfits like me out there in the World! On top of that can you guess what I have in my car this very minute? Yep that's correct . . . my very own Personal Plastic Jesus or PPJ for short. My cousin and I have for years been subject to "ROAD TRIP" and bust out with a couple of verses of this song during the adventure. "Plastic Jesus" and the Rolling Stones "Far Away Eyes" are mandatory for proper "ROAD TRIP" ambiance. If my memory serves me correctly this is the song that I used to win show down Kazoo version of "stump the band"!
Sure do miss you Paul RIP
Great scene.
singin it boss!
Most men view their mom’s as the Virgin Mary reminding them that theirs still hope for them. When they pass it’s like all the hope leaves and you’re on your own.

"'The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness'
Honore de Balzac
There was a missionary that visited our church and soon became like family to my family. It was like they belonged to our church and they soon connected to our church. He and his wife started coming to our church when they weren't in Africa. We had them come to our home and play board games from time to time. Sooner or later their daughter came and made our church her home church. He was my dad’s new best friend. He also wanted to bring my brother to Africa with him. I remember him mentioning this song in one of his many jokes. He was a always a happy and funny guy. You only needed to see and hear his smile and laugh once to remember it very clearly forever. He passed away after getting covid. I made this comment as ig a kind of memorial
legend
I loved Paul Newman for well always.
Excelente película !!! Luke el de la buena suerte
