I actually like my live blades almost completely dull, aside from my kraken which I keep sharp cause I use if for utility purposes (cutting and opening stuff). For me I like the look and the craftsmanship of a live blade, but I don't actually want to slice my hand open. Having a dull live blade is also an awesome training tool, as you can very easily and instantly tell which side hit you, but you don't actually get cut. It may hurt, but no blood is drawn and you can continue to flip afterwards. Dulled live blades are my favorite type of balisong, awesome look, amazing training tool, and no risk of hurting myself so bad I can't pursue my other hobbies or even flip for a few days. Awesome video will!

I dont have a live blade, since its just completely illegal to have a functional balisong where I live. (Just flat out, entirely illegal, no exceptions nothing.) And I just salivate at some of the live blades I see online. Some of the shapes in combinations with their handles are just beautiful. Some look elegant, some almost brutal. So i gues what I wanted to say is I totally get that lol

Underrated comment. Blade is definitely still able to be resharpened but does cut me. I'm a massage therapist so being able to flip blade edges without slicing my hands open is amazing. I used 1000 grit as well and just kept sanding it until it didn't feel sharp anymore.

I ain’t gonna trash talk anyone that dulls their knife. But I hate when people show off their knife and tell everyone that their knife is sharp but in reality is dull. And I don’t care if you flip dull, just don’t try deceiving everyone. And your knife will eventually dull naturally by dropping it(flippers edge). And Will keep your vids man there real informative!!!

Never really considered dulling, but now I'm really interested in a tutorial to see more of the entire process. Just got my first live blade a few weeks ago and am still kind of figuring out how to fit it into my normal routine. The reduced risk of cuts is really enticing.
I'm imagining it would hurt resale value a little bit though? Even though a proper dull can be sharpened again, there's probably uncertainty about if the seller dulled their edge correctly?

    • @rubrikduck
      @rubrikduck Рік тому +7

Factory edges don't tend to be anywhere near as good as one can get at home, so I doubt that dulling the blade would reduce the resale value any more than just taking the balisong out of the packaging.

I have a dull, tanto, kraken that I’ve beat to death and use for work every day. Literally perfected every trick that I know on that thing and it works very good for utility purposes like cutting rope, opening boxes, opening bags, and occasionally used as a flat head screw driver. I love it and when I move on to another knife to beat, I’ll keep it because of everything I learned on it.

Good video! I think it's also worth mentioning that dulling just naturally happens with flipping and using your knife. If you drop your balisong it may dull, mar, or even chip your blade, and that's just part of ownership, for me personally I like to at least have a good working edge. So my balisong may not be razor sharp but I can say one thing. I've never met a flipper who received some sort of special street credit for flipping an incredibly sharp bali and I certainly don't feel ashamed for not having the sharpest blade.

  • @axguo2k

Didn't hear about someone dropping their balisong on a kid at Blade Show until now, but honestly at that point it's just flat out negligence. Regardless of if they've dulled their knife, or even if they're flipping a trainer, don't walk around crowds of people flipping. No one wants to get shit dropped on them no matter how dull it is, and it just all around makes people nervous. Even if you know your knife is dull/is a trainer blade, other people don't know that. Be responsible and be cautious of your surroundings.

Putting a convex edge onto a bali is another good option. You can do this with a mousepad and some really fine grit sandpaper. A convex edge wont have the same "razor sharp" bite but are still a great utility edge. With the added bonus of being a super strong edge that will survive more abuse.
I am a big fan of having bali's with a utility edge that is useful but not obnoxious. I also carry a normal pocket knife for tasks that need a razor edge as you mentioned!
    Thanks for the video Will!

I mean, personally, I agree with your viewpoint.
Since a balisong is a "flipping toy" in the modern community, I see no shame in dulling a sharp blade.
    - Well why don't you purchase trainers instead of dulling live blades?
Not all balisongs with live blades exist as trainers, it is much more affordable to dull a blade than to purchase a custom trainer blade to swap out the live blade.
I understand why people might scuff over the thought of dulling live blades, "are you not just making it worse/non-useful?
Well, yes and no. To a lot of people, a balisong is just a toy, they don't want it for mainly cutting things, therefore I believe it is up to the user to decide if
he/her/it wants to keep their fingers and lose useability or if they want to maintain the useability and have a higher chance of cutting him/her/itself.

I have many folders for cutting things. Even a very sharp balisong isn't as comfortable to use for cutting chores. Balisongs have longer blades and handles compared to most folders. My favorite folder blade length is 3.25-3.5 inches. A shorter blade works better that a long blade for detail cutting. I haven't dulled any of my balisongs, but I can't see any reason to sharpen any of them either.

I get that some people do that, but I think it's part of the hobby and fun. Yes it sucks when you got cut, (I'm writing this as I have a really bad cut on my index) but my issue is when people say they have super sharp knives and then dull them to wear they don't cut anything.
I also think that it makes you have better habits as a flipper. This is a hobby and great if you don't care if you get hit on the bite handle by all means flip that way. However, for people who are flipping as a sport and in the traditional way, having a sharp knife will make you think twice before you try a crazy flip. It keeps you on edge and gives you part of that adrenaline rush. I also think it's cool to show off. Saying it's razor sharp and shaving some of your hairs off or cutting something impresses the heck out of a crowed.
I also like to edc balisong, it's a good fidget toy and a good knife. People say "balisong are impractical" when in reality they're very good knives. In order for a balisong to fail both handles have to break. The pressure of your hand also keeps it in place. By no means is it an idea carry and the only reason is it doesn't have a glass breaker. Which is something I need for my job.
All in all, I get what you're saying will, but I really think there's a good argument not to dull your knives.

It's fine if you think the fact you can cut yourself adds to the hype, but I can assure you it doesn't "impress the heck out of a crowed" in an all across the board sense. I think most of us into flipping are into it for the artistry of it and how clever the tricks can be. Not because edgelord can cut himself. There is a large portion of us that think that mentality is just childish and cringey, not impressive. The quality of your tricks will define you, not the sharpness of your blade.

@@ahorserunning and that's completely fine if you think that's childish, however I'm just saying some people have this mindset and I do think there's an argument for it to be more impressive with a life blade than a trainer. Heck flipping competitions require you to use a live blade in states that it's legal to have a live bali song

I don't want to come off as an asshole here, but you have some misconceptions about knife edges. There is a debate around a toothy vs smooth edge, but your description of it seems very misinformed. First of all, a fine edge(or any edge for that matter) is not soft, it is brittle. The reason an extremely sharp edge is more delicate and dulls quicker is because its thinner, and any sideways force will either chip the edge, or in the case of softer steels bend it, forming a burr.
The thickness of the material being cut also does not impact which edge type you should choose for most effective cutting, but the type of material does. A razor will cut a tomato much more effectively than it will cut rope. A toothy edge is good for long fibred material, while a razor edge is better for pretty much everything else. A razor edge also does not really cut through force. It is ground to be so thin that it can split molecular bonds. You just need enough force to get the edge between molecules. A knife will also never be able to cut you simply on contact. You need to push the edge into the gaps between molecules, and then a bit further to separate the bonds completely. A knife that can slice a tomato that's free standing will not cut you simply by touching the edge, your skin has more give to it than tomato skin. Think of it sort of like a cast saw, it can cut a stiff material with ease, but just feels weird against your skin.
Cutting through a rope over and over also does not dull a knife by smoothing out micro-serations, it bends the edge over because you're using too much force. Using a piece of leather, no compound, to strop it would bring it back. To cut rope you want some serrations that will hook onto and tear fibers, smaller serrations will hook less fibers at a time and make it easier to tear them, adding downward force won't help except to dull the knife quicker.
The sandpaper technique is creating a much more dangerous knife for when you make a mistake that isn't just messing up a wrist pass. It will still cut you, like you've said, but you just made a slightly fatter edge, with MORE micro serrations, that will cut you far worse than a razor when it does cut you. 4-5k grit is low grit if you're talking about knife edges. My stones alone go up to 8k, my hone thats made for straight razors is around the 15-20k+ mark, and stropping compounds are measured in microns. When I re profile a butchered edge I start at 2k if its not that bad, or 1k if its got visible chips.
You have a lot of good advice, but this isn't really that. The argument of dropping a knife into a kids leg is irrelevant to sharpness, only a trainer would save them from serious injury in that instance. The dull knife will just make a cut that is harder for doctors to put back together. You should not be flipping a live blade with anyone near enough to you that they are within range of a drop, period.
I am not trying to flame you or anybody who's scared of/doesn't want to get cut here. I am speaking from experience, I have cut myself with dull knives, and I've cut myself with near razors. I gave myself a ring of shame with my lucha after bringing it to a mirror edge. Cut receipt paper like it wasn't there sharp. Didn't even notice id given myself a ring of shame because it didn't bleed for a solid minute. I've also nearly cut my thumb off with a very toothy edge. Didn't even have to look to know I cut it, took a chunk of my thumbnail and almost completely severed a part of the tip, still don't have feeling in that thumb tip. I have also dropped a dull, and I mean dull, live blade on my foot. Despite the tip being rounded it went straight to bone, ill never have full feeling in my right pinky toe because of it. The only saving grace in it being dull is that I didn't need to pick out a piece of the tip, but otherwise that was the most painful cut I've ever received. Couldn't walk for 2 days and bled through my soccer cleats every practice for most of a week.
TLDR, a razor sharp, and I mean razor sharp, edge will cut you with less force than a dull one. But,, ost mistakes you will make with a balisong exceed the amount of force required for a toothy edge to cut you anyway, and the cut you will be left with will take longer to heal, if it ever heals 100%.

A Balisong is a stupid weapon. It’s made to be flipped around. Any argument to its practical application, as a weapon or tool (in comparison with any other type of knife,) will be refuted by me personally.
On the flip side, there’s nothing wrong with just flipping it about for kicks. Dull them all.

just thought id share a saying "a dull knife is 9 times out of 10 more dangerous then a sharp one' i dulll my knives as well and if you dont dull them completely the cuts youll get will be way worse and nastier then a sharp one, id say dull it all the way or leave it sharp cause when you unevenly cut your skin itll have a harder time healing and it will hurt more.

The first 6 minutes are like Marco Pierre white trying to explain why the stuff he does makes food taste better. I don’t know about how a knife edge works on a microscopic level but the few things I know are this: When people say “razor sharp” they usually mean “extremely sharp” or “very sharp” but another common way to use “razor sharp” is when a knife is sharp enough to shave with.I get that you were trying to explain that you don’t need a sharp knife for every need BUT a sharp knife can assist even those tasks such as cutting boxes. If the knife is sharp you need less pressure to cut the boxes and therefore you would be less exhausted. Also saying the edge has micro scerations and is like a saw is contradictory because saws don’t function well when they aren’t sharp themselves.
Either way good video keep doing what you are doing 👍
