- It's time, I'm finally talking about Balisong Flipping the youtuber not the hobby though both have the same name I'm not talking about the hobby in general I am talking about the youtuber in specific though I understand how you may have gotten confused with both of them sharing a name and all but I assure you that I am not talking about the hobby in general though I do mention the state of the hobby in general I am talking about the youtuber.

i am just looking at this and kinda remembering how much all communities are kinda similar and all have a pretty much pre determined fate that as it grows it gets more and more toxic and more assholes join the comnunity

Im late to the party, but dude‘s half-right. Saliva does contains opiorphin, which is a strong painkiller (stronger than morphine), but it also contains millions of bacteria. The pain may go away but you risk a bacterial infection.
Saliva is also somewhat antiseptic, but it doesnt mean saliva is completely clean and bacteria/virus-free, cuz your mouth is like, one of the most bacteria-infested place in your body. If those bacteria is not killed by the antiseptic saliva and u lick your wound, theres a possibility u gonna do more harm than good. Its not a completely bad idea (does have some benefits, and animals do it too), but you gotta remember it carries some sort of danger.
TL;DR: Saliva can stop the pain, but your mouth is dirty, so u risk bacteria infection by licking. Think b4 u lick

I’m just a big softy hippie guy trying to spread positivity and love every day. Flipping balisongs brings me a lot of joy and I just want to share that more ^-^
I will say I think some of the general toxicity is because the hobby of knives draws in a certain type of people, either grown adults or 13 year old's that think owning knives is like edgy and rebellious and such. It's a shame because balisongs are much more than that but this is an unfortunate effect.
I'd say that's a fair perspective
This really hits the nail on the head, knife communities ( not just balisongs ) draw in a crowd of people who are often lone-wolves or social exiles. These people don’t often have the best communication skills which leads to a lot of misunderstanding. On the other hand - the younger people introduced to the balisong specific hobby often come from gaming backgrounds, (say, pewdepie for ex.) and gaming communities are typically extremely toxic.

excuse me, im a 15 year old and i flip balisongs for fun, not because i think its edgy. i dont go on the street and threaten ppl with a knife which should be used for something else.
I got my first bali when I was 13, and have now put 200 dollars into the hobby with a lucha trainer and a zipper(literally ordered one today for my b-day) since. Its been 2 years almost and I'm loving the ride. Definitely seen and heard about some stuff, but overall I try to embody christ in my actions by being supportive and kind and loving towards other people. Totally see what you're saying tho abt the edgy 13 year old vibe. I just thought flipping looked like the most fun thing.

Just got into this hobby a few months ago, had no idea about the drama but what hobby/ fandom doesn't have drama. Will, would you ever make a video about fails/ dropping the knife and such? Some days it gets me down seeing all these fantastic flippers on social media, especially cause I am a beginner, and wonder if I ever get to that skill level, I know it's just practice but..yeah

I fully agree will, I'm also from a shithole in Texas and have indeed made many mistakes in my past and have been incredibly insensitive. It's everyone's responsibility to grow as a person and try to become better every day, I think this is something we should all learn from. And btw you have a very mature mindset about all of this, Brandon from balisong flipping is who made me want to start making balisong videos, but you are what inspire me to become a better youtuber and try to put more effort into not only my UA-cam videos but being a better person in general!

I really feel like the final 5 minutes of this video should be required viewing for people who consider themself “in the balisong community.” The toxicity is a genuine problem that really turns people off from the hobby and I think a big reason is that many people struggle to find the ‘right way’ to call out other people. There are simultaneously people who are ignoring bad business or community practice, while also going nuclear over say; owning a clone. There needs to be accountability and respect in tandem. I think this balance will be extremely difficult due to the fact that most Balisong Flippers are young gamers. Young people and specifically young gamers - are exposed to toxic behavior every day of their life, so inevitably it comes with them into the balisong community.
That's a very good point, and I do hope more people get this message and spread it!

I agree with a lot of the points in this video, you make great takes and points, one thing I'm surprised you didn't mention is what Brandon and Jake do in their server to get people to be moderator, the making kids eat raw eggs for mod is a fucked up thing to do. Another thing I wanted to mention is, when you don't have money for a certain knife you have, you get what you can afford, I agree with that. The problem is that Brandon clearly does have money to buy knives from real manufacturers and not just clones. Like just recently he bought a zephyr clone, and called it better than the real zephyr, plus called SvixCo "Shitco" in his description and then changed it. He does have money to spend and to get real bali's. I'm hoping u possibly make a video on the questionable things he's done. Shiv Shack made a few episodes of their podcast showing what Brandon and Jake did in their server and I hope you check it out. All in all, great video, great takes, great everything.

Well this video 100% confirmed my suspicion that when you are a genuine caring person who speaks their mine very well. These are all great points and it shows that you really care about the community and people in general.
Towards the last week or two Balisong Flipping started to break and get really toxic. What started my disliking towards Balisong Flipping was the fact he banned multiple people for having a seperate opinion then his.
You have a fair point and have changed my mind set on Brandon.
As someone who also got to face the wrath of the anti-clone bullies(including the guy who got me into flipping), I really enjoyed this video. When it happened to me I apologized for like 2 seconds then changed my mind and put them in their place. And while the point I was trying to get across was exactly the point you made in this video and it did get them to leave me alone, I also went about it in a very toxic way. But as you also pointed out I realize now that while it worked in my case, I still contributed towards this communities problem with toxicity. You and your affinity for orange helped opened my eyes to that, so thank you for that :)

I'm also from middle-of-nowhere Texas and I also used to make trashy, bad-taste racist jokes. At some point, I realized that making those jokes wasn't okay, and I've started calling out those types of jokes rather than joining them. I've learned from those experiences and realized that what I said wasn't okay. I sincerely beleive that, with the reaction he received, Balsong Flipping had likely done the same.
I was pretty lucky when I got Into the hobby, I watched your videos and bali flipping sometimes but mainly just your content, and joined your discord, which is the only discord not made by me and my friends that I’m actually kind of active in, everyone is just so nice and helpful, definitely some cool people in there, if any of them are reading this :) good job at helping me with everything I didn’t understand

Brand brand new to flipping. I didn't have any idea there was a community or that there was drama. I didn't even realize that clones were such an issue. I thought they were just a balisong with klone in the name. Yes, I purchased one. I really want a nice quality blade but the klone was what was available to me and I didn't want to drop a ton of money on something that I wasn't even sure I would enjoy. If I get really into flipping, I will not be buying another cheap clone. Thank you for the advice. I learn a lot watching your videos.

Sadly all niche communities and subcultures deal with drama and gate-keeping. I can't think of one I've been a part of where cliquing hasn't happened. The only strategy I've found is to ignore it, don't feed it, and build new and better things without them.

As someone who was the right age for when Vaping culture really came in full bloom and peaked, you'd have hipsters with large steampunk devices proudly being fog machines blowing massive clouds, and as someone who liked balisongs since childhood... well the communities are more similar than you would think. Surely some people have been in both but just getting Juuls at the gas station isn't what I mean by "the culture" even though the the whole Juul at School culture was a thing. I'm talking about the far more pretentious ones, serious hobbyists. Instead of Juuls it was mech mods and box mods with rebuildable atomizers. This is how they sold vapes at butterfly knife prices, they were works of art yada yada, bought a very classical looking one which was 300 bucks and 3-4 months latter it no work anymore. (Like my first balisong, a bear and son 30 bucks, which lasted almost that before it was all one flip alway from falling into pieces.)
I forgot what my point was beyond how they can both have to types of customers: those who wanted a balisong primarily so that they could use it, even edc it, are akin to people who would buy a vape so that they would also get utility from it, something to get themselves off cigarettes or just a nicotine hit... which was the point.
I think the people who were using zero nicotine juice so that they could be a walking chimney and have a "cloud contest" (yes, it exists) with others aka who blows a larger load out their mouth are similar to the balisong elitists who will do their flipping contests (it is another male dominated activity so pissing contests are obligatory) and care far more about expressing their martial art forms more than actually thinking to use the blade for anything that isn't opening a new letter or box (perhaps with a bali in it.)
In the name of art you can make prices whatever you want, not that there isn't blades worth 10 grand. But a lot of shit is overpriced because they know the community is in a sort of exploitable culture. I only payed 300 bucks for a vape because I thought it would last a lifetime... that was foolish, I was 18. I don't expect the Lucha I just got to last a lifetime but I expect decades. More importantly I trust sending it in to Kershaw. Contacted the vape creator after I brought it back to the store and none of them could offer any help beyond offering to buy it back for 40 dollars... fuck you no.
That store is where my friends would often hang out... many years latter heard from said friends how the girl who was apart of the couple who ran the store was arrested. Well considering I watched several of my 17 y/o friends smoke weed in their with them (way before my state was even ok with medicinal use, or it was but it was monitored like giving a painkiller script.)
Met a girl who I latter learned would become friends with them too after we moved on, she said she had to guard the secret of why the arrest happened. I have a good guess but perhaps it is saucier... but seriously all you had to do is open the door and get hit with an overwhelming smell of weed. Cops like to vape. I wouldn't even see a cop as a dick if he wasn't on the clock and called it in... you are smoking weed with children almost everyday... many groups of children. At least try and hide it is how I would feel as a cop. But no. It was all out in the open.
I know the store had a rocky start, the guy who's gf got in trouble started it with a friend of his. His friend early into their operating days would clear the store of all its valuables and disappear to run away and fund his drug relapse which was Heroin and Psychedelics.
Hey Will! Love the points you made, and I think Benji Knudsen also summed it up pretty concisely with, “any success in the community is a success for all.” However, I’d like to touch on the clone issue. Its the main reason why I stopped watching his content. I agree that buying a clone does not make someone a bad person, however I do think that promoting clones as better or close to as good as the original becomes an issue. He has quite a few videos where he tells people that the original manufacturers are overcharging and ripping off the community. I find this to be unfair to the original manufacturer as BalisongFlipping doesn’t seem to have a full understanding of economies of scale, cost of production, and just running manufacturing in general. And again, as you said, he does not deserve hate for this, but he does deserve to be called out for it.

Saying the quality on some clones is close to the originals is just the truth. It is calling out some of the BS that Balisong companies are doing like higher markups and the same limited/lack of supply shit that happens in the sneaker world. Limited, low stock drops of knives to artificially increase the demand and price. OG companies do charge extra for a lot of what you are talking about but still do the other BS as well. Sorry but it shouldn’t take months trying on drops to just get a production knife with eh materials. In that way, they are being unfair to the community.

I have a strange perspective on clones. I started out with crappy Amazon trainers, before moving to the Lucha as my first real knife. I loved it, but took a break from the hobby for a good year or so. Clones were a good way for me to get back into it, and I like them more than my lucha. I think it’s possible a lot of people prefer clones over original knives sometimes.
Clones are a good entry point. Especially if you're not able to spend 200$ on a high quality original

More options besides clones are comin out for the same price point and better quality than clones once they do that’s when ima b done w clones.

This Chanel is the most epic thing ever. Hearing all your opinions on things in the balisong community really makes you feel alot more like your in the balisong community lol. Like previously you felt like some far away balisong entity that was kind of separate from everything else in the community, but now your much more persable and its really cool to see.

Still tons of drama and toxicity and now it seems people can have differed opinions. Ive sene so many people get ran out of the hobby purely due to this phase of beliefs being different then people with more power try to call them out or as they call it cancel them. I did not know about this. I am very new to this community and Balisong Flipping was the first UA-camr that I started following in this community. This makes me sad to hear about and changes how I feel towards him but I hope that this situation cools down.

On the clone thing. I currently have a falcon in the future I will get an atropos demon trainer. While I guess I did support a cloning company but I would have probably fallen out of love with balisongs if I didn't buy the falcon. Which buying that falcon will lead to 300 dollars in Atroposes pocket.

I am glad you are a reasonable person, you are absolutely right and I know and hope Balisong Flipping can grow. You grew as a person which is great and I think as long as someone makes up for it and apologizes they can be forgiven. I once had a class where once someone made a really bad joke that was definitely not school appropriate in any way, but they apologized eventually and as I began to know them throughout the year I knew I couldn't judge someone's entire personality by one thing they said one time in the one hour period of time I see them in every other day, like you said it's their actions throughout their life and what they do afterwards. i started out live blade with 4X clones now I own BRS / HOM. clones are definitely a good stepping stone for the game. They make good blades for the kitchen too. Trainers are fine but what people say about trainers is true when going live down the road. Bad habits, fear of cuts, less speed of progression live. It happened to me when I didn't think it would. Maybe it won't happen for someone else. everyone is different. Another great to a clone is they're in a price range where it really doesn't matter how badly it becomes beat up because it's CCC. From what I received on those 4Xs I was impressed with the quality. The new stuff is even better. IMO buy a clone that is an out of production model vs current production models. If you do have a clone and you're looking to sell just don't try to scam because that's not right. you're hurting the buyer and you'll most likely become blacklisted which will make B/S/T 2nd hand a nightmare.
that's my take on clones.
as far as the content creator balisong flipping... Don't really care about the fact he made whatever joke people say whatever they say. I just think his content is not good and the fact his channel title is what it is makes me mad. He made his name the category of his content most likely with intent to play upon the algorithm in his favor. The fact that his channel encompasses hardly anything but a small fraction of the real nature of balisong flipping makes him a complete joke to me. when I see his videos I ignore them always have after I saw the first few and I will continue to do so regardless of this video.
I loved the Knife Caviar channel. Heh was kinda funny and kinda a douche. People are just in such a hurry to hate on people who are different than they are.
The hobby would grow faster if the flipping community was more like the guitar community.
Will, I'm not sure if you're aware but on Brandon's Discord server, one of his mods (who is speculated to also be Brandon) asks kids to eat raw eggs for discord nitro, glow mods and other various reasons. He keeps these videos and uses them against the children as blackmail, threatening to release it to the public if they don't do what he wants. If you were aware of this, it seems inappropriate to make this video without addressing that. If you weren't aware of it, I'm hoping you can do something to address it in the comments.

Agree with your take on this, and balisong flipping seems like an alright guy with good vids. My thing is since he named himself "balisong flipping" he kinda rigged the youtube analytics for his channels exposure wich is kinda fucked as it drowns out creaters in the community from the search results, and I believe this could be a major reason for his growth. Don't know if he did that intentionally tho but it should be said

I do think Balisong Flipping is someone meets criticism with a bit of a 'fuck you' mentality. I remember a video he had posted about people giving him hate/criticizing/ critiquing him doing blade side tricks by saying things like 'hey guys, look at this' and does a chaplin on the bladed side of a trainer and talks about how it can't hurt him because it's a trainer. The whole video was him going in tricks that would cut you using a live blade while talking about how dumb it was to critique tricks done on a trainer and that he knows how to flip a live blade. And while I have my own beginner thoughts on the whole gatekeeping how your supposed to flip, I think that basically taking what was being said and addressing it by doubling down fits his MO. I'm glad he hasn't done it here. I know he is young and youth has arrogance with a lack of perspective on situations where you think you have an informed perspective.
I'm also glad you not only take the stance of 'He did something racist, but he hasn't shown to be one.' It's real important, especially if someone is trying to tell a joke, to see a persons intent and history before turning a label from 'you did something shitty' to 'you are shit.' Everyone has said some sort of thing in humor that is edgy and pushes/crosses lines of some '-ist' or '-ism' and certainly has had humor that evolved with time/the people in someone's life/ or their own changes in what they believe. I know the jokes I told when I was 16 was edgy for the sake of being edgy and that my understanding of the world, comedy, and my self has changed a great deal in nearly two decades since then as my life has changed. Giving someone the chance to grow by calling them out and giving them some time to sit with it and evolve is paramount and I'm happy to hear that you recognized that you even went a bit too far in the moment of responding to it and apologized for it. We need more of that self awareness all around and I'm super happy to hear you promoting it.

Ive been flipping for 12 years, I dont like Balisong flipping as he gives misinformation and objectively bad advice to newcomer flippers. Biggest issue is his disregard of a bitehandle and promoting clones/low quality balisong brands (when theres much better options for similar price points).
Bringing more people is GOOD but when you tell them horrible information its only gonna cause injury and bad habits moving forward. Sources like you are extremely useful as you arent spewing nonsense or misinformation. So keep up the great work Will!

Also about him supporting clones, I think the main thing people focus on about it is him claiming they are better then the original bali, pushing new people to hate on original companies, along with claiming svix knives are worse then their clones while hes hospital bound

One thing to consider is that a racist thing said as a joke and a racist thing said for real both look and feel the same to an outside observer.
It's important to understand how people outside of you that don't have the understanding of what you mean internally, will take the things you say.
I don't think making jokes like that makes you racist, but it is important to know the effect they might have on other people.

I love the way your looking at him. And I agree he shouldn’t have made that joke but that doesn’t mean he’s racist is what lots of people don’t get like you said. And I also agree what you said about clones if you can try and get the real one but if not it’s fine as long as your happy with it.

I've honestly had mixed feelings about him, I did slightly jump the gun on his glo mod which got people angry at me for supporting him but I'm a very jump the gun person, when a new maker enters the arena, I want them to have the best chance to become a good maker and at least a cult following, I was right on machine wise, I was somewhat right on baliquick(I wish he didn't give up on the ether but hey) so when he was coming out with the glow mod, he was entering an unexplored space, cheaper then 40 for original makers has been pretty close to unexplored territory other then cccs and I still stand by what I said to a certain extent with a side of caution that the glow sticks can break and that's no fun for everybody.
The idea is fun but it's just not there, there needs to be kinks solved, the idea is great, the execution is meh
