  • Bunessan, a small village in the south-west of the Isle of Mull, Scotland, is the base for our visit to the Ross of Mull. We look at the Historical Centre, then drive to Ardalanish Weavers and Uisken Bay. Finally we walk from Bunessan to the scanty remains of the prehistoric fort of Dunan Mor.
The music is a traditional Gaelic melody which was set to a hymn by Mary Macdonald who lived in Bunessan. The tune was renamed Bunessan and is sung to the words of 'Morning has broken'.

I was once told that one of the Beaton/Bethune medical fraternity had a physic garden in Bunessan. I know there is a memorial to the family not far away. I would like to know if is true, as I am a descendant, as is this person. Quite famous in China:

Thanks for this - that's very interesting. My understanding is that the Beaton doctors were based at Pennyghael, a few miles east of Bunessan, and it is there that the memorial is. It was at Pennyghael that the Beatons had their physic garden in the 16th century, where they grew their herbs. See web.ncf.ca/cv297/doc5.1.pdf You should contact the Ross of Mull Historical Centre who may be able to supply you with more information about the doctors - email enquiries@romhc.org.uk
