Notes:
These 2 segements are from a handheld camera on the floor of a high school auditorium ... so a lot of movement as heads dance in front of the camera. To my knowledge, this is the only audience (fan) video that exists for 1980 - all other video from that year comes from Wolfgang's Vault.
Set 1
00:30:26-00:33:50 - Filled With Graphics
Jerry Garcia - Guitar
Bob Weir - Guitar
Brent Mydland - Keyboards
Phil Lesh - Bass
Bill Kreutzmann - Drums
Mickey Hart - Drums
I was there. Two shows at West High. The Solstice Show and one more. Born (1959) and raised AK kid. b. Elmendorf AFB 1959. So, I'm 63 years an AK resident. We had just returned to Anchorage after floating the Gulkana River - just in time for the shows. I was blessed to see them a few more times - the most memorable perhaps was the Jerry Garcia Band on the Eel River - French's Camp, in the late 80s
My first show I was in the 10th grade and I went there
Listening in Anchorage 😎🤙
Big shout out to ET Benson and Mark Severson for providing the Master and shooting the Video. And thanks Kevin Tobin for posting it. Have not ever seen this before now. I wanted so badly to go to this show back then but I was only 16 and my Father said it was too far, but he did let me go to Lewiston Maine that was only a 2 hr drive from NH ..Thanks again to all involved in producing this...The Sugaree was off the hook!
"But he did let me go to Maine" - Alaska Maine
And you live in NH?
Makes sense to me.
Everybody was going to WATKINS GLEN when I was about 15. I didn't even bother to ask.
Holy fuck! Way to wake up on a Sunday, never thought anyone recorded these! Still remember stories people would tell of the green tortoise ride up
I have dreamed about what these shows looked like since I saw a flyer in a grateful dead book when I was twelve. Very cool and I can't thank you enough for it. Much love!!
I went to West High, and I love the Dead!
same... Edina West High 😂
Oh I LOVE early 80s Grateful Dead :)
. First tape that was given to me. 6.21.80,, that sugaree started the tape, and it was the first thing I ever heard by this band.. I too always wondered what these shows looked like. I was given that tape in 1992, 30 years later I still can't get enough of this band. This music is as alive now as it was then.. Thank you to everyone for making this video available for all of us. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
What a score. Thank you! To see the energy, especially in this all time great Sugaree, is such a treat. Stealth videographers rule!
Yes we do Thanks! Check out me and my brothers stealth video from Hampton 87 ua-cam.com/video/5MDgs3izBxU/v-deo.html
Yes !!

V0ery b0eloved of my old t0ape box I lugged threw many airports but never Alaska. My H.S. didn't have a prom but my sister's in L.A.did w oingo boingo. I missed that one too. Not hard to believe that. Weehaw I love this run of shows - enjoy memorial day and remember don't obliterate anyone's memory or life w too much of the ol grape. Smoke everything
Fresh ! Clean! Clear as a fucking bell! I love this show❤! Thanks for the video Thanks very very much!!
This is like magic! Years listening to these scorchers and now it's right here! Wow thanks bro. God bless you
ALABAMA GETAWAY, Opening set!
First time hearing these. A friend of mine traveled to Alaska to catch these shows! Good clear film - Thanks for the post!
Wooooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A huge thank you to all involved in this miracle!!!
Wowza! My fav Sugaree! Jerry kills it. Thanks Kev and all involved getting this to not only my ears....but now my eyes!
Damn what gems are still out there hiding in the shadows?! Great find and many thanks for posting!
Funny, I was thinking about these shows yesterday and was wondering if any video might exist. Thanks for posting!
Heard the tapes for years. Awesome to see video with such good sound. Thanks for posting this 🙏🤙✌️
WOW !
Wow, super cool; great energy, video and souuuund. I was at the previous two nights, Portland Fire on the Mountain show, and Seattle.
👍😀
Met Jerry and the band 3-26-71. Jerry let me sit behind the amps and the first person I met next is Bear. He’s dropping liquid acid from a murine bottle onto the back of peoples hands and they licked it off! I stick my hand out and he dropped 4 drops on the back of my hand and I licked it off. I got hooked up with his acid dealer and I sold acid for money and the money was for his masterpiece The Wall Of Sound. Bear liked
everything just exactly perfect. Got tickets for the Dead & Company tour. See ya at the shows. ⚡️🖖🏽⚡️
Wasn't Bear in prison in March 1971..?
Also, there was no Dead show on 3/26/71.
@@D-Fens_1632 The stories people tell. I've heard some doozies. This one probably makes it into the top ten. BS meter is humming.
@@D-Fens_1632 I met Jerry and the band.Bear dosed me. Check the date of this show. After meeting
Bears dealer, I soon got more contacts in Berkeley Ca. Philadelphia and quite a few more. A retired Philly narcotics officer was one of the best contacts ever. I get mushrooms from a relative and here in Florida there’s a cow farm next to the high school.⚡️🖖🏽⚡️
@@D-Fens_1632 where the fuck were you on that date. It was March.Cut me some slack. It happened and fuck off if you think it bs It Happened. I had the karma Jerry knew I was cool and I asked Bob Weir why no one blinked an eye with me being there and he said they all knew I was HOME. ⚡️🖖🏽⚡️
I saw all three shows.
What a gem of a find! I love how there’s seemingly nobody at this show! The front of house looks practically spacious! Watching the women dancing in the front gave me all the feels. What a great night this must’ve been!
Jer playing your high school gym 😎
Masterpiece!❤️
Whoa! most appreciative of seeing this. Gives me new insight to this run.
As always thank you Sir .
Qualidade perfeita em todos os sentidos!! Muito agradecido por esse vídeo!!
That was fantastic! Thanks Bro! much love!
I listened to these tapes years ago. Grateful Dead performing in Alaska in a high school auditorium?!? Would have been fun.
Great rippin Alabama out of the gate
Thanks for your hard work! Rossm
AWESOME!!! JUST FOUND THIS SOME OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS WEST HIGH SCHOOL THANKS 👍
Saw my first show in August of that year. I was 16 and was already a big fan of the music but had no clue what I was in for. But I knew I had found my tribe & my home. NFA ⚘
Wow!! It's just as I pictured it!
Kick ass.
OMG Kevin what a shocker ! I had no idea any video existed of the Anchorage run !!! thank you so much !
Thanks, Kevin !!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Very cool. Thanks for posting!
How many people dream to this day of seeing the GD in a high school type auditorium
HaHa - indeed, indeed. I was there at the West High Auditorium in 1980 for two shows - this Solstice one as well. Those shows were my introduction to 'spinner girls'. OH Me OH MY
A Gem 💎 Thank you Kev
What an amazing start right out of the gate for the first show. Thanks so much for this, Kev!
Thanks so much for this. After listening to that tape for so many years, fantastic to put images to the music!
Good thing for bootleggers preserving history 👏 saw my first dead show in 82 excellent video 📹 👍🇺🇲
Thank,you KEV💯⚡️💛🤫
NICE!!! 2nd boot leg I ever got way back in 86 was the 19th! Once again Kevin you blow my mind!! Thank ya kindly!!!
😮 YES! TYTYTY! For sharing this 🌹⚡💀 🌹
Wow!
Yeah Kevin!!! 🙏🏼❤️
Thank You Kevin! Totally impressive, no idea vids were out there for AK. Who didn’t grow up loving these three special nights! Sweetness
This run never stood out that much to me as a tape collector in the 90's, or as a digital archive enthusiast in more recent years. However, the Sugaree here is a real pleasure. I'll give these shows another listen sometime.
Imagine the Dead playing at your high school.
😎
Brent - TLEO - wow, smooth and intense at same time
I met a girl who was going to this high school that they played at when they were there. I used to have these shows on cassette back in the 1980s... Too bad there is no footage of the Terrapin....
Only Dead shows I ever went to that allowed insies/outsies. I think I snuck a dozen people into those shows at least.
Wow, not sure who smuggled the video camera in nor who merged it with the SBD tape but, uh, THANK YOU!
(yeah, folks, this was all tape all the time in 1980, unless it was film...wow)
Gonna download it and try to make it a little easier to watch...
These Alaska shows have to end up as a box-set, right? I sure hope so! Thanks for posting!
Phil had a Doug Irwin? so cool
Thanks for sharing! Will Chris Hazard do this one?
Wow, thanks for this.. I never new They ever played up in Alaska.... Did they ever Truck there way up to Fairbanks?
A few days after these shows on July 23, 1980 Keith Godchaux passed away from injury’s sustained in a car accident
I always thought he drank himself to death. Wonder where I heard that one? How wrong we can be. RIP KG.
@@goodcitizen6193 that's Pigpen you're thinking of
@@Seoulsmoke No, I was not thinking about Ron.
@@goodcitizen6193 The only member of the band named Ron is Pigpen, so….
@@sneakerfacevids441 I said I heard Keith dies from drinking years ago and always thought it true. Seoul thought I mixed it up with Pigpen. I said I did not. That's it.
Thoughts on the Dead would have got a kick out of this.
anyone hear about a witch at these shows i went all 3 nights never saw one but rumor has it one was in attendance
I hope at least a few Sasquatch made it to the show!
✌💀👍⚡👣🇺🇸
Has Bobby gone full Dorothy Hamill here or should I crack a window?
🤣👍
Dude....
These guys aren't too bad for a white band.
