True. One of the most eclectic bands out there. BTW, Victor's "banjo" technique on the bass came from his Bluegrass days at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg.

I met Victor walking down the street of Telluride after the Flecktones blew our minds at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. He was so mellow and humble. Here I was, a fan, and Victor heard me saying “that’s one of the best bassists alive. He asked how I knew about his playing, and told me thanks. I explained being a Deadhead we were all crazy about him, Bela, Futureman. He laughed and told me “you Deadheads listen to all kinds of music don’t you?”. I thought that was the highest compliment I could receive from a total music guru.
I was glued to this video. Eyes and ears. Thanks to brother Brian and these Victor Wooten Bass players, drums and keys as well! Damn!! That was one of the most bizarrely entertaining bass playing I've ever seen in my 50 years. Insane!! Sick!! I'm a guitar player and, I know when I've picked up a Bass guitar they're strings are huge, they're heavy, and these brothers made it look easy! It's said that to master something you need to put in 10,000 hours and, I'm thinking these guys have done that . I couldn't differentiate the teacher from the student, I'd never heard of either one of these guys and I am just blown away, my my my. My goodness gracious 😂 That's that rare stuff that you wouldn't have known existed but for Brian Johnson and Jamal giving it a platform! I love you both and, I love you all!! The 10,000 hours I put in never made me a master. ;-P Some just got "it"...and you tip your cap to them. Many electric Bass strings are not "huge/heavy"...especially if that's your 1st instrument. The strings nowadaze are a lot more user friendly than the ones in the '70s. ;-) IIRC, Vic uses a lighter than normal gauge.

I appreciate you're comment though, I haven't touched a bass since the 90s and, being used to guitar it was a strange transition at the time. I know whether it's strings or the body of the instrument though, that some are made light. The ones I've played weren't 😂 You're right about some just having "it" but , I watch Tomo Fujita (professor at Berklee school of music and taught John Mayer) he's got 4 mottos. "Be kind to yourself' "Don't expect too fast" "Don't Worry" and the one that I think is so important to remember with these 11 year old prodigies who are just born with "it" is the "Don't Compare" We all do but, it's important to let it inspire you and, not cause you to want to throw you're guitar in the ocean right? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote a song, to be played with hands at the extreme high, and extreme low keys of the harpsichord, or pianoforte, and one in the middle, to be played, simultaneously, with the nose. He deserves a lot of credit, for bringing humor and whimsy into the realm of musical showmanship.
When I Joseph Wooten post this, I couldn't believe I had missed it, since I follow you. Had to run right over and watch you discover the amazing amazingness that is The Wooten Brothers! Whenever Reggie and Victor do this the audience goes wild, even when the audience happens to all be friends and family for a wedding reception 🙂 Jamal you and your lovely wife should come to Nashville in December. Joseph will be playing his birthday show December 18th. The Brothers always show up to play a few songs and Joseph, his band and his incredible background vocalists put on one helluva show! It's an annual trip for me to go and celebrate my friend and spend with the family, as well as many other musician friends in Nashville. Bonus... it isn't very crowded at that time. 😁
i saw Vic Wooten with Chick Corea and Dave Weckl on drums. Incredible musicianship. Imagine having the best bass players being backed by the best drummer and then you have Chick Corea on the keys. RIP Chick!
You should watch vid of Victor's commencement talk to Vermont Rubenstein school. He plays through it and talks about the importance of being a good person a lot in it (along w leadership & how to look at it when bad things happen). Right up your alley.
Vic Wooten was in a little band called Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Even if you are not a big fan of bluegrass/jazz fusion, the band was full of masters and with that kind of talent you can't help but have a good time.
Vic is MAGIC ! Not only what he plays, but, too, what he says. Try to watch his vids where he talks about playing wrong notes, or the feel of BB King etc etc. I think millions of musicians would love to have him as a mentor.
In the day, The Wooten Brothers were a young band that played around my neck of the woods in SE VA. 5 brothers... with God-given gifts (beats the merely "talented" folks every time). :-0 Rudy Wooten...RIP. He played sax (sometimes 2-at-a-time) for the group. Joe (keys) & Roy (drums) rounded out the group. Nicest guys in the world, as well.

The Jacksonville Jazz Festival from the early/mid 90s is a must-see. The Flecktones were still relatively unknown. Debut album was just out. VH-1 used to play a "Sinister Minister" music video. Times have changed...change does not always = "good". :-0

Saw Victor live 3 different times. Amazing shows. At one show, after the most impressive bass solos I’ve ever seen, I loudly shouted “now play something impressive” which I thought was clearly a joke until the whole room turned to look at me. They did not think it was as funny as I did and it definitely annoyed Vic. I’ve matured since then 😂

looks like Reggie's playing a non bass in this video, too. That's a regular six string guitar neck you can see in the part of the video where Reggie is kneeling for Victor to play both. Looks like he's using tapping and slap techniques a couple minutes earlier, but the sound is too high for a bass.
Actually Joseph is the keyboard player for Steve Miller, as well as playing with Victor and being a successful solo artist. Cool fact, Joseph's son Jessie plays drums for him, so the next generation of Wooten's is on the scene 😁

Also, something you should definitely check out that's easily accessible is Bela and Edgar Meyer at the very first Bonnaroo in 2002! From watching your videos, you'll love it! I was lucky enough to have been there. Also, also, don't forget about Future Man (another of the many Wooten brothers and a Flecktone); he's awesome, and you'll get a trip out of him! The man invented the drumitar...it's too weird to explain; you just need to see it.
