I love the communication between you and your dad. Your dad has fantastic communication skills. He speaks to you like an adult. He explains clearly and he corrects you without apology. You guys rock. Fantastic
Vic is the Best! I met him in New Hampshire years ago at a small gig and he stuck around and answered every goofy question and was just as nice as he was in this vid. Class Act 100%
Ellen, I can't imagine what you will be playing in 1, 2, 5, years, and beyond. As Victor mentioned, you absolutely have music in your DNA. Passion is also visible in your ears, eyes, fingers, smile, and your desire to learn and grow. Ellen you inspire me too. Thank you for posting!!!!!!!
Everytime I watch one of your videos I end up crying. The care that a father takes to nurture his daughter's talent will always get me. God bless you both. I'll be looking out for lady Ellen about 10 years from now. She's going to something.
Ellen, I enjoy watching you play. I can see the joy on your face as you are playing. I love that! Your Dad is a great teacher. Keep on playing and you'll get better and better. I am looking forward to one day buying your first solo album. 😎
I can sit here and listen to Victor forever. He’s a genius even just talking. And, Ellen… you’re so amazing, cute, adorable, so talented… I just can’t wait to see where you gonna be in a couple years. Do you know that you can easily be one of the best bass players in the world, right? Cheers from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.
Amazing she played that perfect first time. I'm 55 and been playing for years and she is inspiring me to do better. I have that approach to practice and enjoy everything, turn it into music and play, never been a chore to me but I wish I had that opportunity and guidance. She is going to blow the roof of this world with her playing...and her smile :)
What was a really enlightening experience for me was playing in a Balinese gamelan group. In many ways their approach to music is like a polar opposite of ours. They don’t have sheet music, they don’t practice alone at home, they don’t learn a new song little piece by little piece but preferably all the way through. Learning a new piece means the teacher plays it a couple of times and then you have to remember it, the real good guys can remember entire pieces on first listen. There is no analytics like “the piece is in this scale and has this time signature and this form”, you just play and try to remember it as fast as possible so you don’t get a lot of angry looks and head shaking for playing the wrong notes. I still struggle with it, I am so used to going home and learning the piece bit by bit with a recording, while the real guys can learn and remember an entire piece by just hearing it a couple of times. The memorizing skills of these guys is so much better developed. Like our teacher has hundreds of songs memorized, all the different parts for all instruments included. And we are not talking formulaic cookie cutter stuff but intricate complex music, most of those pieces are 8-15 minutes long for like 10+ instruments. We really suck at that because we barely train that skill and rely on sheet music and recordings.
So much wisdom in this video! This is so much more than the typical UA-cam wonder kid, shredding but with no fundamentals. I love how both Ellen and Victor are reminding us to keep practice fun.
Kudos to you for what is arguably one of the finest examples of true parenting. There are so many 9-year-olds who don't even have a grasp of how to form a complete sentence with proper grammar and syntax and, may say proper words instead of profane expletives... And the proof is Miss Ellen herself.. The knowledge she is reaping and retaining and utilizing is reflected in Winston Churchill's words, " knowledge is the only instrument of production that is not subject to diminishing returns.". Ms. Ellen's, smile and laugh ilarr infectious and it is a true joy to watch this talent. Blossom!
Victor is such a good Human Being! Ellen will be one of the world's most recognized Bassists in merely a few years thanks to her wonderful dad and all the musical geniuses taking interest in her playing!
I'm catching up on your earlier videos. Victor Wooten has been a huge influence on my playing ever since I first heard him with Bela Fleck years ago. How fortunate you are to have him as a personal coach and inspiration. His approach to practice should be infused into every music program and by every music teacher.
I wish my parents had been such great teachers and so creative and patient. For me it was always "you have to", "do it like this" and then I was shown it 2-3 times and if I couldn't do it, then I got hit on the ass with a hazelnut rod. I wanted to learn keyboards or drums and then I had to learn zither or accordion and I hated it because I love rock music and not bavarian volk music. I was never allowed to do what I wanted, I just always had to function. It was a horrible childhood for that matter. Thank God there were good times too. Later I did what I wanted and learned drums and keyboard myself. :) I really enjoy watching how Ellens dad teaches here, it's fun and works very well.
I've hung out with both Wooten Brothers! At Abdula's ice cream shop in Newport News Viginia! --Abdula was a great early influence with both brothers and assisted their rise out of the inner-city. I was able to sit in a few times during improvisation there - it was very small and our shop was right beside Abdula's. Victor and Roy Wootan - invited me to see Bella flek and the flektones in concert norfolk, virginia! They are so so awesome!!! i'm so blessed to have had that opportunity and know it was God's will! You are so amazing Ellen! Don't loose the love of what you are doing!
Music is Magic. There’s a science to it - but it’s more like Wizardry, The absolute FUN and JOY you’re having together is what it’s all about. You-two are churning out freaky riffs - and laughing the whole time!!! Love it!!! Love it!!!
Awesome... I am sitting here with open mouth. It makes so many fun to watch you both doing the lessons. Ellen will have a great future as a musician. Keep on rocking Ellen and Hovak. Greetings from Germany The GrinchGe
Ellen ate this up faster than the cake.. the right dad and the right advice from their friend victor. I'd say that was right on. Ellen is off the Richter scale.
Ellen! I am so envious that you have a personal connection with Vic Wooten. This man exudes humbleness and I can listen to him talk for hours. I love his philosophy on how to practise.

Hey Big Dad you made me feel the energy, congratulations to both dad and daughter, thank you guys, sincerelly hugs from Brazillian fan!
Ellen you are not only just very talented And very gifted musician at such an early age, your very beautiful Inner Spirit , can bring peace and joy to anyone that watches your videos . I have been a professional bass player and keyboard player for over 45 plus years, and you have a very good chance if keep on doing what you are doing to Become One of the Best of all time, especially with the great father that you are blessed to have , teaching and encouraging You.
When you watch and listen to great musicians like Victor, you are reminded of the intellect behind the heart. So many of these legends are frighteningly intelligent. There is so much math and memorization involved in theory, that it takes a sharp mind along with the dedication. It obvious Ellen is gifted with a special brain along with a special talent for music. Along with a very special Dad.🙂
To your dad: Hey, dad, you're one cool dude with the way you work with Ellen. To Ellen: In my eyes you're such a precious child. Love your drive and eagerness to learn. Above all that though, I LOVE your smiling eyes and your smile. I've never really had lesson. But I have a good ear and I've been playing for YEARS. Yet, I can't do what YOU do. So I'm subscribing and, hopefully, I'll be able to learn along with you. Strange thing though? I've rarely if every say that anyone "inspired" or "inspires" me. YOU just did!!!! And I LOVE you for it, Ellen. Thank you.
This is the first Hovak/Ellen lesson that I've watched. I'll be back to watch more. Making practice music and having fun doing it. And thank you Vic Wooten too!
WOW, look out victor....Ellen in da house...with Victor and your dad Hovak teaching you, you're gonna pick up a ton of knowledge, and I can see you reaching that level, you are a gifted young musician. You inspire me with your talent. Keep up the great work guys!!
Ellen, you are no doubt gifted with music. What a blessing to have a loving dad that is so encouraging and talented to help you on your journey. Keep smiling and have fun!!
You're absolutely amazing Ellen (and your dad too)! You made my day and it started with just one giggle of yours :) then came the playing! And the way you play this exercise at the beginning, I thought it's the Spirit Crusher intro originally played by a very scary band, but it should rather be called a Spirit Raiser in this case. It'll be wonderful to stay on this channel and just watch you play.
OMG Hovak is such an incredible teacher!! No wonder home-schooling for Ellen was never a question. You won’t find very many public teachers with his skill set out there. ❤❤😂😂🎉😊😊😊 Remember: without him there would be no Ellen!
The Ellen's Groove video was the first I'd really seen Ellen play (besides the occasional Instagram short that popped up in my feed). And when I saw that first video on UA-cam I posted a comment to the effect that Ellen should have her father find her a really great teacher or two to study with, to advance her obvious talents even more. Little did I know E is already getting practice tips from Victor Wooten! And my goodness, the speed with which she picked up on that scales exercise and was then able to synchronize it perfectly with the song so easily is just phenomenal! Keep on practicing, Ellen. We're cheering for you! 👏❤🤙
Right now, I am working on becoming a good beginner on piano, but when I see you smile and listen to you play, it makes me want to run out and buy a bass and work on what you have already accomplished. Keep up the good work.
The best times I had on my bass was when I was a kid and just played and learned songs and bass lines. Never practiced explicit scales I just played and as an adult I lost a bit of that natural approach and now I got back to it.
As kids we all learn by playing this is how we develop our basic skills, some how as we grow education les a side the power of fun and put focus on discipline. of course discipline is necesary to achieve your objetives, but is a fun experience whats keeps you motivated. Go Ellen keep playing and practicing hard, and do not forget to have fun!!!
Victor Wooten! The first I heard of him was with Bela fleck. I had never heard a bass played like that before.. His brother played a percussion doomahicky, and well, they blew my mind! Been following him ever since.
Dad is going to ensure that this prodigious amazing little girl, Succeeds! Exposing her to all this knowledge and stretching her developing abilities to be able to handle.....anything. Keep at it Ellen. Pop's knows what he's doing. Preparing you for Greatness! Love you both! ( And Hey! I grew up in Las Vegas! 62 now...but lived there from '64 to '74. Great years for LV!) Still playing drums, from up here in Reno. Best on your Journeys together!
You are a phenomenal father Hovak. What is your story? Ellen is blessed. Victor is a beautiful person! Wisdom and warmth and graciousness. Fabulous video. Wow! Ellen! Excellent scales you ended on!
How wonderful this is!!! Thanks Victor (my favorite bass player, been to many Bela Fleck shows and he's always my fave). GREAT stuff. Ellen, you are honestly inspirational in your true love of music.
The two of you are doing something special, in regard to introducing music to people like me (old retired fellow, self-taught player). You create confidence with the music. I am unable to explain it better, but maybe someone will. Tx for your time, your passion, your skill and gift and your decision to share all these with us.
In the "Ellen's Groove" UA-cam video, I commented that you were now my favorite bassist. I hope you didn't tell Victor Wooten. Like a soldier equipped for battle, you are being armed with musical knowledge to prepare you for being a great bassist. Keep up the good work and thank you for motivating me.
That was a lot of great wisdom from Victor, I wished he had been my music teacher when I was a kid. I still love music but never really learned to play anything well because all the practice was by rote, and it felt like a chore instead of something fun to do.
I cannot say just how much I absolutely love this!! Videos like this give me so much joy and hope for the future of this world. You both do such a fantastic job together as she is learning and playing. Plus, hearing the wise words of Victor Wooten is absolutely warming. As one who has been playing bass for 22 years I am thrilled to see this beautiful content and her joy in what she is learning. Music is beautiful, transporting, and one of the most powerful forces in the world. Keep learning! These videos remind me of old PBS videos I use to watch back when I was kid about kids learning music. Keep on!! You are doing incredible!!!
She will only realize later on in life that she was getting advice from one of the greatest bass players on the planet. As always Victor is total class.
True, Music is in her DNA. Watching Ellen and practicing along side with her as she grows will be a serious benefit in any one's life who wants to grow in bass play.
I have discover a video of Ellen couple of month ago. I have look at this video so many time, and every time, she just bring a great sentiment of joy to me, her smile, her happiness make me feel good. For a reason, I didn’t see your channel before. And since yesterday I have see multiple video of you both. Sr. you are a fantastic teacher, a fantastic dad and you have a fantastic student. I am so happy that I found this channel. Ellen and dad, never change a thing, you both are great inspiration. Thank’s for all this . ☺️
OMG, I'm inspired. I've played bass for 30* years and have been in a funk lately. This inspires me to pick it up again, try that exercise, and start making some good sounds. Thanks Ellen! You rock indeed!
Thanks so much for allowing us to peek in! Any musician can identify with trying to make practice engrossing and fun. For me this video really shows the importance of a great instructor.
Ellen, I discovered your channel about a couple of months ago, and was absolutely in awe of your talent!!. Both you and your dad are such lovely and down to earth people too, that it was an automatic subscription from me!. Watching you play is always so much fun, that I have seen many of these video's, many times over too!. I know that there are some extremely talented up and coming bass players out there, but not all of them understand the pivotal role of bass, and how it underpins the music itself. I think this is what Victor was trying to emphasize to you, and that's what I respect about a truly great bass player, and also what I see in your own playing!. It's for this reason, that I'd just like to say, that my two favorite female bass players are 'Kinga Glyk' (from Poland), and Julia Hofer (from Austria). Both of these young women have such amazing feel and mastery of their instruments, that they have the Ellen factor... which means I want to keep watching them!. Kinga Glyk in particular, is just such a phenomenal talent, that I did seriously doubt, if Ellen could ever make it to that level!. However, I am now seeing things in Ellen that have changed my mind about this, and I really believe that she could end up that good!!. Anyway, I strongly recommend checking out both these women on UA-cam, as they a certain sensibility about the way they play music, which I think you'll relate to.
Mr. Wooten keeps it real. Music is what music is. It is not boring - over & over & over. Music is enjoyable and even fun. It has color and it has emotion. If you can keep the joy, you will certainly improve. Miss Ellen is a perfect example of that! MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL! (and more cake!) Carl
Hi Ellen. Your dad is an excellent musician and a good instructor. You have lots of good coaches so you should be able to reach new levels and be a tremendous inspiration to others. Make sure he teaches you the jazz standards. The whole catalog is like a school of music theory and the many songs are good to know because you can jam anywhere. I love practicing scales. The modes of the major scale are important to understand, but the diminished (half-whole), melodic, and harmonic minor scales are fun because they sound different and are interesting.
The first thing I love, is the fact he doesn't treat her as a child, but as a musician.
I love the communication between you and your dad. Your dad has fantastic communication skills. He speaks to you like an adult. He explains clearly and he corrects you without apology. You guys rock. Fantastic
Exactly thats how we should do it.Not only here but at schools and basically in everday life
Vic is the Best! I met him in New Hampshire years ago at a small gig and he stuck around and answered every goofy question and was just as nice as he was in this vid. Class Act 100%
God, I just love Victor Wooten. He's as much a philosopher as he is a bass virtuoso. This man has such a teacher's heart.
Thank you for you kind words!
You should come to Nashville someday
Makes me want to pick up my Bass again. You two are amazing. I really need to pick it up and watch your lessons
RIGHT ON.

I'm a 40 year old man I wish I could have had a dad like him. This is crazy good. Your a lucky little girl.
Everytime I watch one of your videos I end up crying. The care that a father takes to nurture his daughter's talent will always get me. God bless you both. I'll be looking out for lady Ellen about 10 years from now. She's going to something.
'you didn't get good at talking by sitting in a room practicing...'
What a treat to hear some fundamental truths from Victor Wooten.
Victor Wooten is such a wise and inspiring musician. He's been my favorite bass player for many years!!
That kid has a happiest smile in the word. And she's cute. And she's talented. How many kittens do I have to save to have a daughter like her!?
Ellen, I enjoy watching you play. I can see the joy on your face as you are playing. I love that! Your Dad is a great teacher. Keep on playing and you'll get better and better. I am looking forward to one day buying your first solo album. 😎
This man is a privilege to emulate on every level…please know him on every way you can Ellen.
The interaction between father and daughter is precious and she's adorable.
As a new bass player, at 60 years old, I thank you two for introducing me to Victor Wooten. This dude is smart.
.......and Extremely Talented!
The way Victor Wooten understands music is so inspiring. It motivated me to practice, no play the bas today!
She never seizes to amaze me. Those little fingers move so fast and cover so much of the fretboard.
ceases
She is going to go far !! ❤️
Thank you Mohini ❤️
How did you start Mohini? At wich age? and playing or working the scales? ))
Ellen is already Miles Ahead -
I can sit here and listen to Victor forever.
How great would it be to have Victor Wooten as a personal source of information.
Truly awesome !
There is no analytics like “the piece is in this scale and has this time signature and this form”, you just play and try to remember it as fast as possible
so you don’t get a lot of angry looks and head shaking for playing the wrong notes.
You just gotta listen to the wisdom of Victor Wooten. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
She feels Music without boundaries ❤❤
Yup.... Victor is a Great GUY.... and Bassist.
I'm catching up on your earlier videos. Victor Wooten has been a huge influence on my playing ever since I first heard him with Bela Fleck years ago.
You two are making me a better bass player. Thank you!
Music is Magic.
There’s a science to it - but it’s more like Wizardry,
The absolute FUN and JOY you’re having together is what it’s all about. You-two are churning out freaky riffs - and laughing the whole time!!! Love it!!! Love it!!!
You rock! May all your dreams come true 🙂
She is really listening to Victor. Her mind is like a sponge soaking up every word he's saying to her. I can hardly wait to see her progress.
Awesome... I am sitting here with open mouth. It makes so many fun to watch you both doing the lessons. Ellen will have a great future as a musician.
Keep on rocking Ellen and Hovak.

Wow... as a bass player of 25 years, even I was listening like a young padawan to the Jedi Master... Thank you Mr Wooten for your wise words.
Ellen ate this up faster than the cake.. the right dad and the right advice from their friend victor. I'd say that was right on. Ellen is off the Richter scale.
you can see ellen taking every word he says and really absorbing it ...and she understands what is being taught
Ellen! I am so envious that you have a personal connection with Vic Wooten. This man exudes humbleness and I can listen to him talk for hours. I love his philosophy on how to practise.

She’s amazing and that smile and giggle makes her videos so special. Lucky dad! Thank you for posting. Loved it!
27:21 the moment you see Hovak burst with pride. And he and Ellen connect in laughter. Epic & Priceless! Great music!
Very cool that you got Vic to talk with you. For such a mega musician he's so real and humble. Perfect mentor for Ellen.
Watching videos from the Alaverdyan household has been like Christmas every day!
Peace and joy to Ellen, Dad & Mum and Victor too!
She plays faster than I can think ... she's AMAZING ! Love you Ellen ! Respect ! 👍👍👍👍👍
What Music does to this child's face and soul is undeniably Magical Wow
You have everything thats needed for a musician. Joy, music feeling and a big smile
Good points by Victor. Don't pratice too much, take breaks, enjoy life 👍
When you watch and listen to great musicians like Victor, you are reminded of the intellect behind the heart. So many of these legends are frighteningly intelligent. Amazing Ellen !
Reminds me of my dad and me when I was little like you ❤️
That's probably a beautiful memory for you Mohini. You've got a lot of fans here in Canada and thanks for inspiring us as your Father did.
The Mohini Dey playing with Marco Minnemann? Jeez, Ellen, you have quite the fan base...
To your dad: Hey, dad, you're one cool dude with the way you work with Ellen. To Ellen: In my eyes you're such a precious child. Love your drive and eagerness to learn. This is the first Hovak/Ellen lesson that I've watched. I'll be back to watch more. Making practice music and having fun doing it. And thank you Vic Wooten too!
I learned so much from Vic I love what he says about the harmony in jazz "you have to feel it than it will sound wright".
Absolutely nailed it. I've never really practiced... just played... every spare moment.
Ellen's playing should inspire each and every one of us: joy in music !
Ellen, you made me cry in the last segment. I wish I had 1% of your talent in the 60’s. Your family is amazing.❤
Now I see that we can learn the lessons of the great masters through you. Thanks God for your life.

Like a soldier equipped for battle, you are being armed with musical knowledge to prepare you for being a great bassist. Keep up the good work and thank you for motivating me.
This is the next Geddy Lee yes
You Ellen are Blessed to have such a loving father as a teacher and he listens to you and communicates so wonderful with you !!
That was a lot of great wisdom from Victor, I wished he had been my music teacher when I was a kid. I still love music but never really learned to play anything well because all the practice was by rote, and it felt like a chore instead of something fun to do.
I love Ellen. Every time she smiles it makes me happy
Lass that is totally dialled in.
Well done Ellen and Dad, your a champ for taking this lass and working with her like that.
Love from Australia...
I love it!🤩👍🏼 Love you both and see ya soon.
❤️❤️❤️
She will only realize later on in life that she was getting advice from one of the greatest bass players on the planet. As always Victor is total class.
True, Music is in her DNA. Watching Ellen and practicing along side with her as she grows will be a serious benefit in any one's life who wants to grow in bass play.
Now thats what you call an inspiration with music....💙👊😎💙👊😎💙👊😎
These practice videos are awesome! Love how you ask questions to really engage Ellen in the lesson and get her to really think about these concepts!
This is the way towards success, but MUSIC brings " colours " to to both the human thinking and Soul, as well. 👏👏👏
Thank you!
Thanks so much for allowing us to peek in! Any musician can identify with trying to make practice engrossing and fun. For me this video really shows the importance of a great instructor.
Brilliant. Ellen and Dad are absolutely smashing it. As Victor said keep doing what your doing.
Wow wow wow nice bass line my boss
You are a superstar❤
Post more
Love your giggle laugh.
Wishing you all the best.
Most important, is you inspire me to do better.
I'm going to need beginners lessons.
You are both so lucky to have one another. It is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Ellen is a very intelligent, talented girl, but her being so happy and cute shows she is just having fun being exceptional
24:10 it was amazing! beautiful skills at your age! and you have music in your DNA!
💯💯💯
(and more cake!)
