Demonstrating the amount of strain on your wrists when using a Driver instead of an impact!
In the video you will see the wood spin very harshly! If the wood is fixed (clamped) Then this force would normally be on your wrists. If you was driving in screws of that size all day your hands and wrists wont like it!
So even though many people HATE the noise of impact drills! Think about your hands and wrists! They dont hate the noise! but they do HATE pain!

the main difference is: if you have larger screws than this one, an impact cannot do the job because the screw simply flexes and wont drive into the wood, you need the constant torque to drive in really long screws.
but indeed for most of the screws the impact does the better job (if the noise is no problem for you because an impact driver is extremely loud and not suiteable for every environment)
I did not know the big difference between a driver and an impact, and your video was very didactic

You helped me make up my mind. I did actually see the difference. I am a hobbyist and think twice before I need something. Recently when I was putting a screw on 4x4 the same thing happened. I never knew the difference between a driver and a drill. I thought they all the same.This is a very good demonstration

So here is how this is working: the impact driver makes a lot of small rotational impacts, so the post has time to go back to its rest position on the table between each strike. With the festool cordless drill, the force is continuous in time, so it is (visibly) rotating along the horizontal axis.
The force exerted by the two screws on the post is the same however.
This is a good video for a new or youngster trying to make a decision on his or her next tool. To me the impact driver is best tool for the task he was trying to explain. Although the comments are good too to make aware to the new or youngster of the dangers of not clamping down the 4x4.
Good visual demonstration of both tools advantages and disadvantages, they both have their place though I wish I could afford festool myself ha ha ha. Have a good one man.

Always run across videos of guys saying they, they have been using their drill for X amount of years, and the drill looks like it just came out of the box.
After a week my drill didn't new anymore, and two years later it's still going strong.

I was just demonstrating the benefits on the hands and wrists when using impact driver because it reduces the force which a regular driver exerts onto the wrists.
As you can see in the video a large chunky timber spins off when using a regular driver this shows how much force would normally act onto user.

The first day I got my Impact was the last day I used a Driver.
drilling along side the fibers of to wood is actually easier than you think because the screw just pushes them aside vs. just drilling into the side of the fibers where you actually need to go threw them

The Video was not to show how powerfull the Festool was over the Milwuakee but to show what Benefits a Impact has over a drill/driver which happens to be my Festool drill.
As you can see in the video driving the large screw takes no effort with an impact but with a drill/driver (my festool drill) it puts alot of strain on your wrists hence why the timber spun.
just bought a drill set and wondered the benifits of an impact drill, now I see them :) great video I'll be putting mine through its paces . cheers
With an impactdriver even a kid can screw in large screws with a normal driver its very difficult to hold against

I am assuming the power drill is set to the screw function and not drill function. Good comparison but there's another issue with the drill: "caming out" where the screw head gets ruined.

How is it possible that you were able to hold the screw in your hand straight after using it... It should have been piping hot!?
The heat would be concentrated at the tip and going with the grain is less pressure.
Im solid! Heat ppft ill walk on fire bear footed no problem.
Its a thick long screw ;) So the heat spreads across the screw so it only get very warm.

I have a question and I am hoping you can help. Impact drivers are not available in my country so I would have to import one, pay international shipping, customs duty, and value added tax, which would make it about 4 times the cost of the impact driver in the US, which sadly is not affordable for me.
We do however have basic cordless drill drivers. I do very basic DIY work when I get the time (which isn't much at all) and I have been just driving screws by hand. I generally work with 3/4 inch plywood, and use 2" screws for it, do you think a drill driver will be fine for me? I know it won't be ideal, but I can't afford ideal at the moment.
If I had to count, I would say I drive in no more than 30 screws a year at the moment, but I am looking to build a wardrobe and was considering saving some time by picking up a drill driver.
A drill driver will be fine. Impacts are for large and long screws mainly

Mainly frame work and roofs. I only use screws for roofing. Your not aloud to use nail gun nails against building regs.
So its either large nails by hand or plates.
I rather use screws but you are not aloud to use regular screws because they can snap.
You have to use structural screws like the ones in the video. You can get them from 80mm upto 600mm long i think. My common sizes i use are 80mm 120mm 160mm and 220mm.
They make for a strong solid roof and pull your joints up lovely. Also if you have to make alterations you can easily do this by unscrewing them. You can get them in stainless steel so perfect for oak frame work. They are not cheap however in alot of situations you can use them instead of mortise and tenon because they are structural screws. So the time you save to cut a mortise and tenon in oak of sets the cost of the stainless screws.
Thanks for the explanation, but I still don't understand. If you are attaching let's say plywood to a 2x6 rafter, why do you need such a long screw? I can't imagine any residential job, make that *any* job, that would require a two foot screw!

No you would never use these large screws for plywood. Different regulations you would have to nail plywood with nail gun for structural jobs. You can use regular screws with plywood for non structural jobs.
These screws are for timbers so joining two timbers together. So for example rafters can be fixed to wall plate and/or perlins . A rather could be 150mm deep so you would require a 220+mm screw and bore it in a bit. So you pull the rafter in fixing it solid to wall plate and/or perlin.
When doing floor joists and trimming the floor joist you can use these screws instead of using joist hangers.

Yes, if you only wanted to spend money on one, a drill/driver would still do the job. Also if you only intend to use it around your home for minor repairs/screws then a drill/driver would be better, as you get both in one.

I'm dying to get my hands on one for working on the car. I'm hoping to get something with enough torque to get the wheel nuts (lug nuts for the US) off for around £100 - £150. Any recommendations? It's only for home use, so not looking for something bullet-proof or extended battery life, so battery chemistry (Ni-Cad / Li-ion) isn't that much of an issue.
You want get anything special for that kinda money. You would have to spend more.
Also you want a impact wrench not driver for removing car nuts. The impacts in the video are drivers not wrenches although they are similar they are not

You clearly have no understand of how a drill works. Engaging the clutch on the driver would only cause the drill to come to a stop when the clutch reaches its maximum torque/counter force. You would then be unable to drive the screw in and be left with a large screw sticking out so what's the point??
+jmb69er You are correct, im faced with that problem all the time, even with my new Makita Combi Drill as a hobby user. It doesnt take a big screw/bolt before you need to use the drill mode in my experience. Today I ordered an Impact Driver. Will come in handy, also nice to have one to drive screws without getting tired out and one to pre drill for instance.

cxaner the impact hits the screw round to it reduces rotation force. So the timber doesn’t have chance to rotate.

It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.
..why so much fuss for a really simple conclusion? ;) Just use the suitable tool for the job! An impact driver will hardly drill rpecise holes a combi driver CAN, while an impact drill can probably screw screws (mainly, only..) that a combi-driver will struggle/break/twist your wrist... but you can snap so many screws with an impact...
Impact is for torque applied suddenly the screws, nuts ... gives the operator THE IMPRESSION that is very powerful when actually is the snapping mechanism inside that does the job by HAMMERING the screw to death..
..I would never tight cars wheels with an impact gun/impact if I care about the car.
Infact, every good wheel nut/screw is suited for this impact action.
If you use an impact driver, you should use impact rated bits and nuts/screws/bolts.

I'm wearing a festool top yet the video indicates the Milwaukee impact is the better drill for the job.
Any way the video isn't about which brand is the best it's about which TYPE of drill is the best for this application. A impact drill is less strain on your hands and wrists when driving in larger screws. The timber spinning is a big indication that their is a much larger counter force when driving the screw in. If this timber was fixed down this force would be transferred to your wrists instead of the timber spinning.
I'm supporting the fact that youre making an honest non-bias video other than some other reviewers that openly show their biasness to certain brands!!!!! Certain festool reviewers bash every other brand, some also rate dewalt higher than other brands because they like certain brands...

Why is there a specific driver just for driving screws/lags. It seems pointless if there are impact drivers and drill/drivers available. A drill/driver does the same job as that driver but can also drill holes and is much more versatile.

Not even the same specs. A drill cannot give the same torque as a impact driver. Even in hammer mode. Hammer mode is no where close the breaking force of a dedicated impactor.

You don't get it. One drill spins the the timber the other doesn't. That's because one is an impact one is just a driver.
The reason the timber spins because there is more force acting against the drill when driving the screw in. This force either tries to turn your hand round or twist your wrists or the timber spins round! if like you said the timber is fixed all the force acts onto your hand/wrist if you are driving screws in all day long it gets very hard on your hands and wrist. Hence why an impact drill is much better on your hands and wrist because it eliminates the counter acting force. Which is shown in this video
jmb69er Your explanation of why the beam twists is mostly correct, but its a little vague. Its mostly due to impulse, inertia and the coefficients of static and kinetic friction than it does torque. Impact drivers of the same voltage output much more torque than a drill/driver, the difference lies in the impacting mechanism. An impact driver delivers its force over a very short period of time, and it has more inertia due to the hammer/anvil system inside of the tool, which reduces the reactionary torque on your hands. It takes a certain amount of torque to turn the screw, and the deeper the screw goes, the more torque it takes. Imagine there are two screws at the same depth in the same piece of lumber, but one screw is already rotating and the other is stationary. It will take more torque to make the stationary screw turn because the coefficient of static friction is higher than the coefficient of kinetic friction. This is where the impact mechanism comes into play. because it delivers a high force over a short period of time, it breaks the screw free and dumps most of the energy into the screw, which has much less inertia than the tool does, so the screw turns instead of the impact driver. A drill/driver on the other hand applies its power slowly, so when it reaches the point where the amount of torque required to turn the screw is higher than the moment of inertia of the beam and screw times the angular acceleration of the beam and screw, either the beam begins to turn or the tool begins to turn. A simplified explanation is to think of driving a nail into a board. If you hit the nail with a hammer with 10 newtons of force the nail will go deeper than if you simply set a 10 newton weight on the nail. This is because the hammer has more momentum than the weight and it transfers the energy over a shorter period of time.
jmb69er How ever you should be wary of the vibration the impacting causes as it could damage the nerve endings in your hands (though scientifically still unproven but there is the chance there) , that said I am pretty sure a drill would do more harm as it puts far more strain on the wrists. So might want to wear thick insulating gloves.
